    The "not saimin" saimin
    Steve G.

Came around 12:15 and there was no one here. Not a good sign. Wife wanted Hawaiian so went ahead and ordered. While I was waiting about 15 minutes a couple of take orders came but no one else came to eat in. Chicken Katsu Saimin - DO NOT GET THIS. The chicken katsu was tender and plenty of veggies. The problem is the "saimin" was not Hawaiian saim but rather like spahgetti you can get at Safeway. 2*. Terrible. Chicken Kastu Mini Plate - Harder to screw up a rice plate. Again, the katsu was fine. 3* Loco Moco Mini - Mostly OK except no gravy. wtf. Loco Moco and gravy?!? Sacrilegious!!! 2* It's convenient. Now I know why nobody eats here.

Food was yummy and just what we needed for the post dog wash next door (pet express). I just wish they gave more of the cold macaroni salad, it's so good! Veggies are extra and I wish I could swap the rice for veggies without it being extra.

The salmon had no season and it's over cooked and dry, the rice is made correctly the macaroni salad has no flavor or seasoning it tastes like off brand mayo and it's watery a little bit. Super nasty, the "salmon" is super then doesn't even taste like salmon. Should've known when it wasn't a single soul coming in or out. The place was really dark on the inside I wouldn't recommend to anyone infinity 0 out of 10 would never recommend. And we order extra Mac salad on the side. The other plate isn't in the picture

Well, I don't usually eat Hawaiian BBQ, but I wanted to give "Ohana Hawaiian BBQ" another try after my fair experience at another location. So I was in the area of Alameda's Nobhill Shopping Center, and decided to get takeout from the Ohana place there. I was there during the most ideal time.....just before lunch. Oh yes, that special time when everything is fresh and well stocked. Usually the best people are working. I got the "Chicken Combo," with 2 scoops of Mac salad, and 1 rice. How was it? It was very good The Chicken Combo was listed as 1/2 Chicken Katsu and 1/2 BBQ Chicken. Well, that's not what I got, but I'm not complaining. I got served 2/3 chicken katsu and 1/3 BBQ Chicken. That boneless fried chicken was hot, moist, and very crispy. OMG, it was good! They put a big slab of Katsu on top of the Mac Salad. The BBQ Chicken was okay. Good flavor, not salty. Hot, but a little dry. I think that's why they served me more chicken katsu. The Macaroni salad had good flavor, and tasted as it should. The white rice was just clumps, not fluffy and not steaming hot. Hmm, I think I'm addicted to that crispy chicken katsu. Next time, I'm just ordering that. Ohana Hawaiian BBQ in Alameda, CA is located in the Nobhill Shopping Center next to the Fruitvale Bridge. The shopping center is at Blanding Ave & Tilden Way. Free Parking

Surf and Turf Combo - Everything tasted dry and overcooked :/

Nope. This ain't it. Serving me inedible food, are we?! You gets one star! My employee and I were craving for Hawaiian food a few months back, so we decided to Doordash this place for lunch. I've been eating at Ohana Pleasant Hill for years and I love the food from that location. I'm here to tell you that there IS a difference. Not all Ohana Hawaiian Grills are the same, and this one clearly missed the mark. The food that we received from this location in Alameda was simply repulsive. I ordered the surf and turf combo with fried shrimp, fried fish, bbq beef and all veggies while my employee ordered the fried shrimp plate with mac salad. First of all, these fools forgot the bbq sauce. How the faaaack do you forget the MAIN ingredient for your meats?! I wouldn't be trippin' so bad if the food was actually good, but this sh!t needed that bbq sauce BADLY! It was dry AF! Both the shrimp and fish were clearly over fried. The bbq beef was 80% fat and 20% beef. The veggies tasted like they came from one of those frozen bags in the freezer section of the grocery store. Nothing was fresh. Nothing was good. I'm honestly appalled. How can anyone even fix themselves to serve this to a human?! Hell, even the dogs ain't f-ckin' wit it. Whoever is cooking up this junk needs to be slapped. Better yet, they should try it themselves. I'm sure that alone will already be a slap in the face. The crazy part is, this place has been in business for at least 15 years. I'm sure at some point it might have been better, but their latest reviews are telling some serious horror stories. Now riddle me this: How are great restaurants closing up shop at the flip of a dime, but places like this are still thriving and staying in business? I don't get it. It's perplexing. But what I do know is that I won't be subjecting my intestines to this crap ever again.

    Black char from burnt hamburger.

Burnt food. I DoorDash most days for lunch and this was one of the poorest food qualities I've experienced and I would like to warn others. The burnt char rubbed off on the rice the salad, and sides of the container. Not safe to eat. Why send out food like this?

Ordered through DoorDash. The short ribs were SO burnt! What a waste. It looked burnt, it smelled burnt, then I had a bite & they were definitely BURNT.

Chicken Katsu with 3 scoops of Macaroni salad because why not

I enjoy going here but it's always hit or miss when I order to go. Sometimes the chicken katsu will be crunch, juicy and delicious but other times it would be super dry. Sometimes the chicken would look like it's been deep fried x2 times and it's just crunchiness. I love their macaroni salad. That is always bussin when I go here.

This place is hot garbage! Dry loco moco, overcooked eggs, barely any gravy. The Mac salad was disgusting, taste like pure tuna

The area is located in a plaza which is great to find parking. This location also has the Guava Pies too. We ordered the Kalbi Short Ribs, Island White fish, Hawaiian BBQ Chicken, all mac salad, no rice and it came with steamed vegetables. Everything we ordered was delicious. Highly recommend this location.

You can order with the staff or using the kiosk. The menu has many options. You can order individual plate lunches, mini meals, and even family meals. We got two mini meals (chicken katsu, chicken teriyaki) which included small fountain drinks, a beef and chicken mix plate, and a beef rib with chicken mix plate. It took about 15 minutes before we got our order. Everything came in fast food containers, which was convenient cuz the portions were generous so we had leftovers. Overall, the BBQ meats were seasoned well and had good taste. None were overcooked and the beef tasted tender. The chicken katsu had good crunch. The macaroni salads were satisfying and the stirred fry cabbage that came with the plate lunches were generous portioned and had a nice wok hay to them. We appreciated the fountain drinks as we were able to get refills. All in all, I would said this is a good place for convenient fast food, and the prices were reasonable for the quantity and taste. The mini meals were of especially good value.

Weather was nice so we grabbed a table outside and ordered from a QR code on the table. Sadly, learned they were out of an ingredient for the Hawaiian roll French toast so I got the normal one instead. The waitress was really nice and managed to balance bringing out four water glasses for us. I haven't had French toast in a while but it fulfilled all my childhood memories. I quickly sensed that maybe this was where the locals go (every one seated at the tables were happily talking loudly) and I couldn't help but think maybe it was obvious I was not an Alamedian. "Shack" is a perfect label in it's name - it's tiny and intimate with probably a handful of tables. It really brought lots of memories of Hawaii bubbling to my mind. When you first walk through the door the first table is on your left and 3 or 4 other tables follow it along that wall. To your right is the small kitchen/food prep area behind a short wall. Two to three steps forward takes you to the middle of the room. A few more steps forward and then you're in front of the cash register where you order food. This is also basically the other end of the room where the servers are walking in and out to retrieve food orders to serve. So it felt crowded. Ordering went fast - you tell them what you want, you pay, and then they give you a table card and you go find a table. I sat outside. Anyway, they have ube mochi waffles (Gluten-Free!)! That made up for my insecurity. Paired with a mango matcha latte even! That definitely brought it up a few notches. Plus I got to sit outside with a dog! The outdoor area actually looks much smaller when you look at it from outside but once you sit down you realize it's roomy and comfortable. It's also clean out there (not a lot of flies buzzing around during my visit) so plus, plus, plus. They brought my order out and I felt myself relax more as they finally brought out some smiles and friendliness. It may have been the cute Labrador under the table, though. Overall, if you are missing the feels of the islands this is the right place to be! Also, the malasada didn't disappoint. It came out hot and fresh. Nice sugary crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Although not Gluten-Free...
