I love going to Oishii! I've never had a bad experience here. Their rolls are delicious & HUGE! It gets me every time haha. We always end up ordering more than we can finish because we forget that they are double the size of rolls from other places. Our favorite rolls to get are: -For the Love of Salmon -Toro Truffle -Crispy Mango I also really love their sashimi! Big, thick cuts. Last night, we got the Sake Toro, O-Toro, Sake, and Kanpachi. Super fresh! I highly recommend getting their Chilean Sea Bass & Black Cod (appetizer). They cook it perfectly & have great flavor, cannot go wrong. Long time patron who saw Oishii, who set the bar high, fall from grace. They were the best of best - a standard against which I judged all other sushi and no one ever came close. Until........ The recent visits were plagued with fish that smelt and tasted off. The final visit had fish smelling so bad it wafted through the restaurant on the way to someone's table. Our own dishes were of varying quality and the salmon in one roll totally "off". Prices haven't stopped climbing as new entrants open in Boston and yet quality has fallen off a cliff. The crispy rice was divine - I have never had crispy rice with that amount of fish on it and the quality was top notch. The sashimi was a bit underwhelming, the Toro did not melt in my mouth as Toro should but the salmon belly and tobiko were without complaint. Service could not have been better though and the ambiance is perfect for a nice evening out. Wow. This place blew our expectations, and some sushi I had never tried before. Highly recommend The Maki, which has truffle on it and would never expect that to be one of the better rolls I've had in a while. Every occasion we celebrate here, our dishes are brought out right on time as we finish the last bites of the previous dish. Each dish has always been well prepared, fish always fresh, flavor profiles have depth and we have our favorites!. Flaming salmon always graces our table first, i wish it came with 6 pcs haha but about 30seconds for us is the good touch of fire before you grab, dip into the sauce that accompanies the salmon (vinegar based it seems like) and slurp. Melts. We decided today to also get the hamachi jalepeno (crispy fried jalepeno), take the fish drop some peppers on it, scoop it up and dab into the sauce on the plate and enjoy! In between dishes we used the edamame puree to cleanse our palates. We decided on 3 maki's which is about the perfect fill for us. The truffle toro, love for salmon, and crispy mango! Our favorite is the truffle toro / hamachi. It's buttery and just tastes so good. I wanted to make sure the birthday girl tried the black squid ink pasta with bits of squid mixed in. It's a savory dish, the ink doesn't stain your teeth long. We also always get the buttery flaking crispy goodness that is, Chilean seabass! And of course instead of going overboard with deserts like the last time, we got the coconut sphere, yuzu, black raspberries, raspberries and caramel cream. Always a good ending to a great evening. Awesome sushi spot in the south end. It's a deceptively large restaurant with well thought out, intimate lighting that gives it a great date aesthetic. Service was a little slow on getting orders but I think they were just trying not to rush us. Sushi combination martini had a refreshing cucumber flavor. I did not get sake but there was a huge selection for connoisseurs. They start you out with an edamame mousse which was absolutely delicious. Oishii sashimi make was a great size, pretty basic flavor. All the rolls are well presented and the staff was very attentive once they started bringing out. Okay, this was entirely my fault. I got a little carried away by what I "thought" was the newly improved restaurant scene in Boston after having a few excellent meals at Japanese Spots here. This was not one of those meals. In my defense: I scoped Oishii out extensively online. Looked at many pics, read through multiple online versions of their menu (which were very misleading...). Here's the problem at Oishii: I'm going to go out on a limb and say that at least 90% of the menu items are deep fried/tempura. Not kidding. There is this huge, long sushi bar fully staffed with chefs and they're deep frying every, damn thing. I'm sure that sells. It's probably not a problem for them. Deep Fried sushi is not my thing and not why I came. So....my bad. I had actually planned what I was going to order/eat from reading thoseonline menus. Pretty much none of the items I was planning to order actually appeared on the menu last night. I'm assuming they serve what sells for them: Tempura Everything. #eyeroll The spot itself is very beautiful. Multiple levels, multiple bars and dining areas. Really lovely furnishings and serving plates, etc. Also? EXCELLENT Sake List. One of the best, most extensive I've ever seen. Super impressive. If they had had even just a "basic" sushi section on that menu Oishii might have worked for me. As in you can't just order some ala carte pieces of sushi and/or some simple rolls. (I was not given a menu including that. I can see one online. Maybe I should have asked. I just assumed the fancy, bound menu they gave me was the entire menu??) You must choose from a large page of very elaborate rolls. I managed to find two that did not contain deep fried ingredients. And one of those was a California Roll. Oishii is A Lot of Show and very little substance. Looks good. Decent vibe. Underwhelming food. What they're serving is trying too hard. Everything is muddled. Too much tempura. Flavors and ingredients are not able to stand on their own. On the upside: Portion size is ginormous. One roll will likely do you. So you could have a wonderful bottle of Sake and eat one giant Tempura something and be good! What I had: Cucumber Salad: EXCELLENT. Best thing I had. Led me to have irrationally high expectations. Fried Vegetable Dumplings: really disappointing. Fast food type dumpling that was overcooked. Spicy Salmon Crispy Rice: Very meh. I have no idea what was mixed in with the spicy salmon. But it was A LOT of stuff which made the entire piece too large. Almost impossible to eat. Which is a clear failure in the world of sushi. You must actually be able to get the piece into your mouth... Scallop Crispy Shiso (I think this was on the appetizer menu): Okay, this was DELICIOUS. But this is also an entire meal. Tempura shiso leaf with a scallop on top and then piled high with shredded, fried Taro. This is one of dishes you can order with your excellent Sake and be one and done! Mixed Green Salad: I needed to cleanse my palate from all the fried...basic salad. It was fine. "Real" California Roll with King Crab. It was good. Basic. Fine. For the Love of Salmon Roll: Tobiko, Avocado, Cucumber, Seared King Salmon, Ikura, Shiso, Spicy Mayo. Really good, gigantic roll. Very "busy." Lots of things going on. Not usually my thing. But again, order one of these and you're good! I tried their "signature dessert" which is the definition of trying too hard. Hahahahahaha. So much going on. Presentation over substance. Cannot recommend. It's something like a big, frozen coconut egg with some espresso mousse inside sitting in a little base of yuzu with some berries. #eyeroll Nice Date Spot. I ordered for myself a salmon skin handroll ($9 each, always a sucker for these), a Spicy Tuna Tempura Roll ($24) and a Sudachi Seared Hamachi Roll ($22) to share. Every ingredient in the Salmon Skin Handroll lie at just the right temperature, ensuring a delightful blend of flavors without any unpleasant surprises. No refrigerator vegetable with hot salmon skin here. The pea shoots and micro-greens added a touch of freshness that elevated the dish. The Spicy Tuna Tempura possessed a creative combination of flavors and textures. The warm tuna tataki, along with chives, crispy garlic, and micro cilantro, proved complex. The Sudachi Seared Hamachi possessed a creamy texture and a refreshing citrus kick at the end. It served as a palate cleanser and provided a unique contrast to the other dishes. While everything proved interesting, I find it difficult to justify $20+ speciality rolls. Hot damn though, y'all can't leave Oishii without trying the Crispy Pork Belly. It's so soft, juicy, tender, and full of flavor! Everything was shared, to include the Route 66, Scallop Tempura Maki, and King Crab Maki. Every roll was delicious, but the Scallop roll was particularly my favorite. First thing I noticed when I walked into the restaurant was the ambiance. Beautiful, dim lit and perfect for a date night. Sat at the sushi bar and the service was great. Not spicy at all. Smoked Hamachi: the presentation was lovely. The hamachi was very fresh and the sauce was just right. This appetizer carried a nice lingering aroma. Toro Truffle Maki: very fresh and delicious. I enjoyed it. Will definitely do another round next time. Soft Shell Crab Maki: haven't had good quality soft shell crab for a while and this one was up there. Shrimp Explosion Maki: this one was a full meal. Half of the plate was Maki and the other half was rock shrimp. Edamame Mousse: complimentary. Unlike most places that start you off with a dish or a bowl of edamame, this place started you out with a complimentary edamame mouse. Make a reservation so you don't need to wait... unless you come early or opt for the bar seating. Great customer service but one drawback was how the soy sauce, wasabi, and ginger came out a bit after they brought out raw food and we had already partially consumed the raw food... not just on one occasion but on both occasions that we were here. Highly recommend getting a second mortgage before you come here because these prices are no joke. Whether it's "worth" the price or not is completely up to the diner, just prepared for a high bill if you want the full Oishii experience.
