The best sushi I've had in Boston - hands down! From the ambiance (dim lighting with a floor to ceiling waterfall) to the excellent service and mouthwatering sushi, all I can say is... I have ZERO complaints! Everything was excellent and I cannot wait to return! I even lucked out and snagged myself a parking spot (street parking) right in front of the restaurant. Wow. Just wow. I sat at the sushi bar alone and focused on sushi and sashimi and I'm glad I did. The toro, king salmon, uni, a buttery whitefish I don't remember what it was called but was recommended by my server Nhi (who provided incredible service and knew the fish and menu well). My favorite was the truffle foie gras sushi- oh my sushi heaven. I didn't care for the taste of the ikura but it wasn't bad, just not to my taste at this restaurant. I don't know what another diner found unpleasant about the ambience- it was absolutely perfect. The sushi chefs also made some great recommendations. This is not cheap, in fact, the opposite, but if you love sushi, it's a must try. read more

Overall a fantastic dining experience. Ambiance (5/5): Formal, classic, and nice. Definitely a great spot for a special occasion or a date. Food (5/5): We loved everything we ordered. Between my husband and I we split about four pieces of nigiri and then did the gyoza dumplings, sliders, and two specialty rolls (The Maki and Hamachi Truffle). The flavors of the rolls were so unique, especially the concept of truffle for a roll. The rolls also has a nice fish to rice ratio and everything was seamlessly fresh (especially the nigiri). The vibe also felt like a refreshing, modern take on classic sushi. One of my favorites was hands down the Wagyu sliders- they literally melt in your mouth and I would a hundred percent get these again. The gyoza dumplings were also delicious, light, and flavorful. Service (3-4/5): This is where I was a little let down. Our server handed us a sashimi menu that had little to no description on it and spent zero time explaining the menu up front until we asked for him to. He also gave kind of half effort recommendations. He told us that we should order the torched salmon as that is the go to here but honestly I think we did pretty good without it. He also didn't really explain our dessert well so when we got it we were surprised it was basically a giant frozen ball of sorbet and not at all what we were hoping for. He also couldn't find the wine bottle we ordered for a substantial amount of time. We went here to celebrate our anniversary. We arrived early and sat at the bar. Our table was ready on time. The drink Oiishi Blossom was sooo good I ordered another one. We ordered 3 apps and 3 entrees: Wagyu Tartare, Hamachi Kama, Wild Mushrooms, Chilean Sea Bass, Uni Pasta, Chef's Choice Sushi & Sashimi. Can you tell I was hungry? Our meal was sooooo delish and filling, we could have skipped two items. So full we had to pass on dessert but will come back another time for it. Bartender and server were good. Disappointed with the experience. After waiting over an hour and a half for the food to come. They completely forgot one member in the group's order. Another person in the group had to send back their order. We spoke with the manager and expressed our displeasure and she was very conniving and dismissive of our concerns. Took a 15 minute Uber ride from our hotel to get to Oishii, as it was highly recommended. They were right. We started with a Chef's amuse bouche; edamame purée with wasabi. Sort of Iike a Japanese hummus. Then onto the appetizers, including their specialty "Salmon on Fire". Get the salmon. Get all of the salmon; this place has a way with salmon. Trust me on this one. We also had lobster dumplings that were fried crispy and light on the outside, but filled with tender, juicy lobster purée on the interior. Got an order of the miso marinated black cod. It was so good, we ordered another. Then we had sushi. Lots and lots of sushi. So much maki. Such an amazing fish to rice ratio. And then sashimi. Chu toro that was like silk. I don't recall much after that except thinking that I just had one of the best sushi meals in the past few years. Well, I recall the check; it wasn't the most expensive sushi I've ever had, but it's not exactly cheap, either. We ordered heavy, with drinks, and spend $600 for 4 people, plus tip. Pleasantly surprised! My partner booked a reservation here for my birthday dinner, and I had a very good dining experience! Firstly, the staff and waitress was very friendly and came to check on us very timely. The food was very good -- we started off with the hamachi kama, which was so tender and satisfying! Then, we ordered the 10piece chef's choice sushi and added a uni hokkaido and toro nigiri piece. The fish tasted fresh and looked very appetizing! Then, we ordered two rolls, which were probably the more underwhelming options we ordered. The atmosphere is great for a date night -- had a dim and moody ambiance. The atmosphere is cozy and dark. The service is nice, the waiters are very busy tho! The food is either 100 or 0 hahaha! Glad it's mostly 100! Most of the food is 100! The salmon in fire is super cool and the raspberry sauce makes it special. You can taste the lobster in each bite of Golden Lobster Dumplings! They are basically made out of lobsters! My personal favorite is spicy salmon salad with cucumber wrap! I rarely see cucumber wrap like this! However sometimes they make it big, sometimes it's small... and it's gonna be unlucky if u get the outer layer (dark green) part lol. The uni and salmon are very fresh. For the 0 part, i have tried lots of foie gras and the foie gras wasn't that fresh, I almost threw up my whole meal after the foie gras. The Wagyu sushi was very hard and it's cold. Those are the only two items I won't order here. Honestly if it wasn't for these two I'll give them 5 stars. But I almost threw up my whole meal last time. 4 stars: one star deduction for value as well as average service. The restaurant has a very trendy but intimate feel. They are spacing out the tables appropriately for COVID. Food was fantastic. We loved the wagyu sliders which had such a depth of fat and flavor on a nice toasted bun with some type of wasabi aioli. Definitely recommend. The salmon on fire was also equally delicious (better than the one at purple shell by far). As for rolls, our favorite was the maki...if you like a bit of a kick as it's topped with jalapeños. Our second favorite was the for the love of salmon..which was mediocre. Your typical "good" sushi roll but nothing particularly special. And then the toro truffle maki was also mediocre. I couldn't help but try the "truffle" maki despite prior reviews of it being "meh." I will have to agree that it was okay. As much as I love truffles...the roll itself was pretty boring except for the truffle. We topped our our meal off with the coconut sphere, which was essentially hardened coconut ice with creme inside and topped with raspberries. It was an interesting dessert and tasty, yet I don't know if I'd pay $20 to get it again. I would come back for a special occasion for the ambiance and food, but if I strictly wanted sushi, I'd likely go elsewhere. read more

The food was very medicore. We had a few issues with the service during our dining experience. Let's start off by saying I was there as a party of 2 seated at the sushi bar. During our almost 2 hour of dining, our water was only filled once. With so many waiter/waitress/bussers walking past us, no one noticed we needed a refill on water for over 30 minutes of empty cups. Secondly, my husband ordered a sushi and sashimi combo and I ordered a few rolls. His combo came out first and he had spent about 30 minutes in eating already and my rolls still had not come out. After trying to get the waitress attention to check on the rest of the food, she informed us that "they usually serve the rolls last". That just made no sense to us. Also keep in mind she never asked if we wanted everything to come out once it was ready or if we were sharing the food. Thirdly, for someone who is spending $90 for a sushi and sashimi combo, you'd think someone would explain to you what fish is being served to you, but NOPE! No explanation whatsoever even with the chefs standing right in front of you. For $90 you could eat a whole omakase meal in NYC with much better service. Lastly, we decided that before we left we wanted to give some feedback to the manager of our experience. However, we did not get the sense that the manager has much experience. read more

If you want to impress someone with a show, this is the place to go. The dividers between the booths lend to a private, comfortable experience in a quiet and tidy ambience. I'd say the sashimi is okay, and the dishes with added flavor is what will shine. For example, I'd recommend the Sakura Smoked Hamachi and Salmon On Fire. The food here was so beautiful. The presentation of every dish absolutely blew me away. And of course, everything tasted amazing. I dined here with my family and a friend, and we all shared a bunch of dishes. Some highlights: The salmon on fire was spectacular and very tasty. The smoked hamachi had such a perfect texture. First time coming here with my party of 4. For an appetizer we tried their wagyu beef taquitos which were incredibly juicy and delicious. The crispy pork belly had a perfect crunchy layer while the rest was fatty and mouth watering with the fresh greens on top. The pork belly buns were soft and fatty as well but didn't have as much wow-factor as other dishes. For sushi we tried the saltwater anago which were fresh and simple. As far as makis, we tried the for the love of salmon, torched toro, alligator and snow crab. I would personally rank from least to greatest as the alligator, for the love of salmon, torched toro and snow crab but all were still great! My friend ordered the rib eye steak which had a nice salted crust on the outside and tasted good. We also shared a pork belly ramen which had the same method of preparation as other pork belly dishes and broth was great. My boyfriend got the Japanese A5 steak and was amazed by the quality and loved how it instantly melted in your mouth. Literally the best steak any of us have had. Overall, everything was delicious and I would definitely order again other than the pork belly buns. Portion sizes were fair but is definitely a treat yourself type of place. Overall awful experience. First, we had a young child in our party and we were not told that they did not have a high chair or booster seat until after we were sat. We specifically asked for this upon check in. Second, there were two separate occasions that were placed food orders and the food was not delivered. Upon learning about the missed food the server basically told us it was what it was and disappeared for a long period of time. The food we did get was mediocre at best. There are many places in Boston to get better quality food for the price. Finally, the table across from us ordered a menu item that was seemingly self cooked on a table top grill. When they cooked their food the smoke it created was so copious and thick it smoked out the entire seating area we were in. As this section of the restaurant is downstairs on basement level with drop ceiling and lighting there was no ventilation to remove said smoke. It literally made our eyes water and our clothes smell of smoke. We did not have any manager interaction even though we were clearly having a less than ideal experience. Most definitely, a place where you pay for the experience and not the taste. Presentation wise, it is very aesthetic and pleasing. However, nothing really wowed me. I was expecting more especially if I am paying that much of a hefty price. For apps, we started out with the toro tartare and salmon on fire. The toro tartare comes on top of a humongous ice cube. This was actually quite delicious but comes with very little. But for the presentation and taste, it was kind of pretty worth it. It had a little tanginess from the ponzu sauce and that was a really nice addition. The salmon on fire was alright but not bad. I think we left the flame on it for too long. For entrees, we got the squid ink pasta and pork chop. The squid ink pasta was pretty decent but nothing really stood out to me. The pork chop was actually really good. The mushroom sauce it came with was full of umami flavor. I could literally drink a cup of that sauce. Definitely a solid choice for an entree. We ordered an assortment of makis and they were all just mediocre. I believe we got the Rock Shrimp Explosion maki, B25, the Maki, crispy salmon, lobster tempura, and toro truffle. I didn't even taste the truffle on the toro which is pretty disappointing. This restaurant is definitely a nice date night spot if you a looking to splurge a little bit or impress someone. We've been coming to Oishii (original and this location) for many years. Over time, the food has gotten less authentic, with smaller portions and more odd sauces and toppings. The interior is dark, as other reviewers have said, and you will need your phone flashlight to see the menu. The table was a bit sticky, and the service was off as well. We were a party of four, celebrating my daughter's birthday. This was mentioned (and ignored) serval times. However, a different server graciously took a picture of our family. Ordering was rushed, courses came out at odd intervals, and there was no explanation given for the 10 piece chef's sushi. We had to flag someone down about this, and they seemed pretty annoyed about that. The duck in apple was gamey, miso cod tasted oddly fishy (never tasted that way on previous visits, or in other restaurants), kids said the pork belly was hit and miss. Husband and kids enjoyed the "cook your own Wagyu". Nobody liked the "The Maki" specialty roll. Dessert (mochis, fresh fruit, lychee ice cream) was actually good, although they were out of rice bean ice cream. Saki recommendation was spot on. When dining at this type of restaurant, you expect the accompanying price tag. The overall experience and food presented simply didn't justify it. Heard a lot about this place & finally got a chance to try it. The salmon on fire was a fun delicious choice. We also tried the Japanese Wagyu and we loved ittt! As for sushi we picked the Chef's special and we got a variety that we enjoyed. In a restaurant like this dessert is a must so we tried the Black Sesame Bonbon & enjoyed the whole experience of eating it. Points off for ambiance, but the food is really incredible. My husband and I had a reservation for a Saturday night at 7. We were seated promptly at a table downstairs. I am not sure of the experience of dining upstairs but I did feel that downstairs was lacking in both comfort and ambiance. Our table was sticky, the area is very dim (multiple patrons around us were blasting their phone flashlights to read the menu) and the air was hot and stuffy. I asked our server a few times to turn on the air, and eventually someone did which helped some but I definitely could have done with some more air circulation. We ordered the 6 course omakase with drink pairing and it was fantastic. The service was well paced and each dish brought something unique and delicious. The soft shell crab and waygu on hot stone were some of our favorites. Our server gave us a nice explanation for each dish and the matching drink. It was plenty of food - we left feeling very full. We never felt rushed and stayed for about 2.5 hours in total. The price tag here is high and while the food is deserving, I did not feel that the basement ambiance was a 5 star experience. If you're going here, I'd recommend specifically requesting to sit upstairs. read more

If you're looking for a great way to burn through a mortgage payment while eating high quality fish and rice, Oishii is waiting for you to come to dinner. This place is fantastic, and totally worth the kidney I sold to pay the bill. It's a weird layout though, you walk in, it's sleek and dark and there is a bar area with tables as you'd expect. Then you go downstairs, and it's a weird maze of tables tucked in all over the place, it seemed like there were "hidden rooms" in three every direction. Best dumplings we have ever eaten. Sake was GOOD. Sushi and rolls were as good as we have had anywhere; NYC, LA, SF etc. Staff was super attentive. Absolutely worth going to, but be prepared for the bill. read more

In my case I called on 4/6 to book 4/11 Tuesday 6:30PM for 7 and at the time I was trying to book it, there were plenty of tables open for 6 people. The food was bland, the chairs in the bar area were horribly uncomfortable, and the bill was almost $200! I went here for the first time last week for the omakase. I have to say, this placed WOWed me. We got the six course omakase. I don't really have a dish I disliked, my favorite was the wagyu with stone grill. My second favorite would be the miso salmon with brown rice. This dish is super flavorful and salmon was cooked just right. They were accommodating of my allergies to shellfish and I still experienced great food despite the allergy. In my photos, you'll see the six courses plus two desserts after the omakase. The staff were attentive and nice and all the food were spaced out great that you'll leave the place full. The toro (fatty tuna) sushi is amazing, we kept ordering more cause it was melt in your mouth delicious. We got the toro truffle roll and the I love salmon roll. Sushi: the truffle foie gras sushi is out of this world and is a must try (worth the price)!
