I have been wanting to try OJ's ever seen I stumbled across their Yelp reviews a few months ago. In fact, I attempted to come about six weeks ago and showed up at a time where they have closed for 20 minutes. I was rushed for time that day and couldn't wait. Yesterday, I made another attempt and am happy to report I aw successful. What struck me about OJ's reviews were some of the descriptions used to discribe this place. Yelpers really seem passionate about it, so I knew it had to be good. The store is located in a small strip mall, next to an awesome Thai massage parlor, btw. OJ's is not super easy on the eyes, it certainly feels like 1984 inside, the year it opened. However, it is kept up well and clean, so the pride of ownership factor is totally there. I was greeted by the owner, who is a super friendly, nice person. I decided to go with the 8" classic Italian and was struck by the price! Under five bucks, for a pretty big sandwich. Not that wimpy Subway six incher... The sandwich was quickly made before my eyes and looked very hearty. I dug in and was immediately blown away by the bread. It look like a normal sub bread loaf, but tasted nothing like it. It was so amazingly fresh and soft. The closest parallel would be to compare it to the softness of King's Hawaiian Bread. Not sweet like that, but just as soft. I nick named it in my head, pillow bread. It felt left tiny pillows for my fingers. The other ingredients, that accompanied my pillow bread was also good. However, while the bread was a 5, the guts of the sandwich was a 4. A good 4, mind you, but not the hands down best sandwich in Long Beach. But don't focus on the negative here, because it really isn't a negative, it just doesn't stand up to the bread, which is most definitely some of the best sandwich bread I have ever experienced... Quite likely the best sandwich I've ever had. I've driven by this place a million times but had no idea what deliciousness was waiting in the wings. I bought the Italian cold cut without onions and with light mayo. It was perfect. I love how soft and doughy the bread is here. I have never seen a sub or sandwich with such soft, squishy bread. Big time love. I also love how streamlined and relaxing this place is. Look at a brief menu, order, eat an awe inspiring sandwich. No fuss. Service is nice here. Let start out with this is a little sandwich shop in a crapy shopping center that is not even really that clean. It's dated and you might walk by with no desire to eat here... Now that the location part is over, they have GREAT simple sandwich. The best part is the fresh bread. They even steam it to make it warm. The prices are good and two people can eat a large sandwich to share and the people are super nice. Their sandwich system is a bit slow, it's not like togos.. I've been going here for 20 years or more. I worked around the corner from there location. The old owner was nice and friendly. The new owners are good people and are very friendly. I go there to support the local businesses during this Covid thing. The bread they use makes the difference in the quality of the sandwiches. Once you go there a few times they get to know what you order. Not only me I here them talk to other customers and they know for the most part what there customers want. Now they have AC!!! No frills sammich shop, yet casual and comfortable with interesting plants and photos well placed in the dining area. The woman who took my order and made my sub was friendly and attentive. An old school sandwich shop that keeps things simple. It was relatively quite when I first came in and was greeted quickly. There was an older lady making the sandwiches whom I assume is the owner. I went ahead and tried the OJ's Regular Sub which is ham, cotto salami, mortadella and cheese on a sandwich roll. For $4.25 it wasn't bad and cheaper than the cheapest sandwich at Subway or Togo's which is a corporate rip off. I got the OJ's Regular Sub and it was AMAZING! The bread was sooo soft! The smell indicated that my mouth would be watering shortly and it was! I got my sub w/ turkey instead of ham, and provolone instead of mozzarella cheese. Extra mayo, and extra oil and vinegar. I paid $7, it's 5.75 regularly, but I assumed it was more for the turkey instead. I could only eat half of the sandwich, even though I tried to eat some of the other half, couldn't do it. I ordered the Large Italian Cold Cut, thinking I'd eat half and save the other half for later. Well that didn't work out, because I couldn't stop at just the half. Was looking to stop for a sub sandwich while running errands, this place had good reviews so I was looking forward to it. Came in and I don't even know if the lady was distracted or just rude, but I told her what I wanted, and she just looked past me and was like huh? Like already soft, bland bread dipped in water with some meat and veggies. And this bread is NOT fresh. I bake bread. Most of the reviews from these people, they don't know fresh bread and it shows. This bread came from like the van de camps, food 4 less, which if you like that kinda of bread, sure. Just super processed, bad quality. Yuck. Barely any veggies and I like mine packed. It came with NONE of the ingredients I asked for, a bunch of them I didn't ask for. This was just not it. Waste of time and money. I would've gone back in and asked for a refund, but I was short on time and they weren't worth it. I'll prob dispute it with my bank maybe it was just a bad day.. probably.
