Love this place. I don't even know how I found this hotel. Other than that I was looking for hotels in the Wrigleyville area. This was also the very first bed-and-breakfast I've ever stayed in my life. I truly enjoyed my stay at this hotel, and will absolutely stay here again... I think I got lucky with my room 3A because it was huge and one of my buddies had a room on the first floor and it was a tiny room. Another buddy of mine stayed in 2A and he had a huge room as well. You have your own private separate bathroom that you can lock and on the third floor there is kind of a meeting area and quiet time starts at 11 PM. They offer a ton of boardgames. If you have a group of people as well as there is a group refrigerator. We all had a chance to visit the speakeasy in the basement and it was so cool and the history of this place really blew me away. The guy at the front desk was really cool and friendly. This hotel is it within walking distance of anything you can imagine in Wrigleyville and there's a small very continental breakfast in the morning which is basically a couple pastries, coffee, orange juice, and hard boiled eggs. Again, I think I paid well under $200 here a night, and it was totally worth it and I plan to come back as long as I can stay in room 3A or 2A. read more

I would avoid this place if you can. On this company's website they talk about old fashioned hospitality..that's exactly everything they don't have. From the beginning upon arrival they have electronic door handle to enter. Ringing the doorbell they just ignore and calling them you'll be charged $35 a min for phone support. Give me a break. The woman who runs this place has a very arrogant entitled tone. She will send 20 different emails and texts with spam crap after you book the room. Good luck keeping it all straight. It's freezing the codes not working and she wants money to talk to her on the phone just to get into the room you've already paid for??? Wow that's some seriously entitled attitude. I finally get in after 50 different steps like an easter egg hunt. Different keys that aren't labeled for bathroom and bedroom. Keys are in a lock box that you need another code to get into. When I did finally get ahold of the "inn keeper" more old fashioned hospitality she rudely tells me that the directions are in one the lengthy emails she sent. She just couldn't be bothered to due her job and actually check people inn. But she instead sent me 50 different emails. The beds are squeaky with big dips, indents and broken springs. Extremely uncomfortable. Their useful life probably ended 10 years ago but she obviously doesn't care to replace them. The bathroom that was in my room was clearly a total afterthought added to the room. The quality of the work done is that of extremely unskilled no experience home owner special. Definitely not done up to code and barely functional. looked janky and done super cheap, probably by someone who doesn't even own a tape measurer. After I checked out the hotel owner tried to scam me out of an additional $70 more dollars for a robe she says was in my room. This hotel has those $ 50 cent gym towels not actual bath towels let alone a bath robe. Strange I stayed here twice and neither time was there a bath robe in the room. SCAM alert when I tried to stay here I booked the room for one price it was paid for but when I tried to check in the hotel completely cat fished and up'd the price claiming it was the websites error. I don't think it was an error, But once you book it seems super shady to change that price after. But shady is this hotels middle name. I really don't have anything good to say about this place, except for maybe its location. read more

Adequate is how I would describe the hotel stay at Old Chicago Inn. Unfortunately, it is run as if the hotel/business/customer service was an afterthought. If you want to feel ignored and almost completely on your own, this is the inn for you! After a 7-hour car ride to Chicago, we had to call someone and wait 10-15 minutes to even be let into the inn. There is a plaque near the door listing a telephone number to call if you arrive after 11 a.m. and need to check-in. They supposedly only have someone on-site from 8-11 a.m. and the telephone message only states the telephone number one time, so be prepared with something to write with when you arrive, to take the phone number down to reach an attendant and be let in. Secondly, there is NO ELEVATOR. This is ok if you are young or in good health and in good shape. For a couple of 50-year-olds with a sedentary lifestyle, it was pure torture to climb the two flights of stairs every time we came back to the hotel room. And SO MUCH WORK to bring heavy luggage up the narrow stairways with 5 days of clothing and accessories packed. The "Free Parking" is a nightmare as it is street parking within certain nearby numbered districts, competing with nearby city dwellers for a parking spot. And they give you a coupon to put in your car window that is only valid for 24 hours at a time, so you have to go visit your car every day to replace the coupon. And beware that you don't park within 15 feet of a hideous red-painted pile of pipes that serve as fire hydrants, or you will receive a $150 parking ticket like we did. There are areas where nearby brownstone houses are doing construction that are tow-away zones, so watch out and don't park there either! Then there is the key situation. They gave my husband 2 keys - one for the front door and one for our hotel room. If you go outside the hotel to get luggage or do anything without your partner and forget to take the keys with you, you are locked out on the street. I always thought it would be cozy and quaint to encounter an "inn cat", but their cat, although gorgeous with silky fur, has a 5-stroke limit before it turns and attacks your hand and starts biting and clawing at you. They told us to be careful not to let the inn cat out the front door, but someone on the 2nd floor always left the back stairwell open so the inn cat would have free reign, and it would try to get out the front door every time we were about to leave for the day. An additional pain and inconvenience that no one needs. (Insert eyeroll here). They advertise a speak-easy in the basement and while it is adorable and very cool, it's not a bar where there is an attendant or any kind of entertainment going on that we were aware of. We went downstairs to check it out and it had the "continental breakfast" of a couple of cut-up pastries in a serving dome and some individual serving-sized dry cereal varieties sitting on a table. I pictured arriving and having a drink in an old-world setting, but there was no bartender on duty, so the whole speak-easy thing was a letdown, but the room was pleasing to the eye and I could see how it would be a fun party reservation. They told us that we could use the bathroom of the nearby bar/pub/pizza joint when first arrived after our 7-hour trip and no one was there at the inn to greet us; so I went a couple doors down, and the bar had no toilet paper on any of the 4 rolls in the ladies room, but it did have a huge one sitting on the floor next to one of the toilets, and the soap was empty in the soap dispenser. At that point, I decided that I would not be returning to partake of any food or drink items they had to offer. Then later as we checked in, the innkeeper mentioned that they run that bar/pub/pizza joint and offered free food vouchers to eat there. Makes sense that the bar would be as poorly run as the inn. As to the hotel room, it was adequate, and that is all it was. My husband had requested a room with an adjoining bathroom, and all the room could fit in it was a bed, a small dresser, a small bookshelf, and a single wooden straight-backed chair. However, the bed and pillows were very comfy and I slept very well. There was no other tenant noise to be heard, since the rooms are separated by brick walls, and the window looked out onto the window and brick of the adjoining room. The shower stall was approximately 3ft by 2 ft, so very narrow. The separate toilet closet was only about 6 inches larger on each side, so it felt like you could barely move to get in or out and barely had room to rest while you were seated. Not for the claustrophobic. The ice machine was down the back stairwell, and the moment I stepped out onto enclosed the back stairwell, the smell of human urine smacked me in the face. So disgusting. The inn cat was also there, so I considered whether it was litter box I smelled, but no. It was clearly human urine. So gross. 13 minute walk to Wrigley. read more

This is bed and breakfast in a fun neighborhood. It is a cool, old house with great personality. Since it is an older home, you will need to be able to handle walking up and down stairs and will need to tolerate the floor creaking, shared bathroom, etc. that goes along with the experience :) My room was very comfortable, had a nice big closet and flat screen tv. And, sharing the hall bath was not inconvenient at all. David, the caretaker, is wonderful and will do everything possible to make sure you have a great stay. I showed up quite early and he got me all checked in and held my bag for me until my room was ready so I could head out and enjoy the city. This neighborhood is awesome. Within two blocks there is more food than you could possibly eat, including some of the best Deep Dish in Chicago at Giordanos. There is a second-run movie theater that serves craft beer, View & Brew. There is live comedy, karaoke and a bar that stays open until 4am. And, if that's not enough for you, the train station is just a block away. Outstanding. read more

Great location near a lot of things to do and the El. Inn Keeper was friendly and helpful. Parking permits were provided for local street parking. Breakfast was served in the "speakeasy" in the basement and consisted of freshly baked coffee cake and fresh fruit. The place is old and that is part of the deal. However the staff needs to clean better. We had dirty (used by last guest) barware in our room and a dried up contact on the mantel over the fireplace. The room we were in was too warm without means to cool it except opening the windows. Open windows at 3am are a bit loud though. Bathroom was small but clean. read more

This review is strictly for Room 13. Deep in the bellows of Chicago's underground drinking establishments lies the hardest bar to get into in all the Windy city. I'm beginning to believe in the myth about Capone's 10,000 speakeasies. It took me weeks of searching and inquiring with online friends to get the scoop and password for my trip. An old friend from my San Diego Pipe Club days connected me with a member here. I also was connected to a 2nd member through a friend in the industry, bam bam 2-fer. I won't go into detail because the chase builds intrigue and interest. With my excitement about this I'm finding it hard to not spill the beans. As I walked left of Old Chicago Inn I put out my cigarette and in my head all I heard for entrance music was "Nightcall" by Kavinsky. My wool coats collar flipped up as I'd lost my scarf earlier that day. I came prepared with my own sports coat underneath, despite loaners for out of towners without. I met my friend outside and we walked down together. He gave me a bit of the history about how he became a member and so on/so forth. Down the red alley and stairs. I knocked, the doorman opened the peep hole and recognized my friend, but in proper fashion he asked me "can I help you", I responded with the changing password, the slider shuts and the door opens. We shake hands and exchange greetings, my coat is taken and we are lead to the speakeasy. I'm impressed by the décor being unchanged and authentic to the era. We are seated and greeted by bar staff. My friend lets me take in the whole experience from here. As we chat out way through the offerings it's clear to see I know what I'm doing and that "out of town" doesn't mean "out of the loop". Having come here late after dinner and drinks this nightcap was much more social in that I got the chance to really engage the bartender and earn his respect. We chatted about typical bar stuff like ice, spirits, techniques, tools, etc. 25 person area is true to the era with no beer and vodka. My Manhattan was great, my negroni was great, I even got to have them make me a little something my boys whipped up back home which impressed them quite a bit. Price is not something you should consider, it's not cheap, but not expensive. There is so much I decided to leave out to keep true to some of the lore and history, but hopefully I've peaked your interest. read more

Wife and I stayed here in July of 2010 and enjoyed it. Innkeeper was very nice and the location CANNOT be beat. Great bars and restaurants all in walking distance. Each day you receive $10 coupon per person to a bar 2 doors down for food. It's standard pub food and pretty good. Parking is free as they offer sticker. I only had to walk 2-3 blocks to get parking on a friday afternoon. We had one of the smaller rooms, but when we come to chicago, we're not there to stay in a room and watch tv, but to get out. So the room size was smaller, but so was our rate. Bottom line, I would definitely stay here again. Nice people, awesome location, free parking and good price. read more

Shared bathrooms -- again, doesn't matter to us but might to others. AWESOME location, 10-minute walk to Wrigley, tons of fun restaurants nearby. Around the corner from Belmont (Red/Purple/Brown lines) station. Very cool Speakeasy Room 13 bar in basement; be sure to make reservations. Vintage cocktails! Breakfast includes French toast casserole or massive pecan rolls or English muffins with hard boiled eggs, yogurt and instant oatmeal. If you ask for Room 1C that opens to living room and no one else shares your bath. Can get a bit stuffy in room so ask for a fan. We have stayed at the Old Chicago Inn several times. What a find!!! The charm of the 100+ year old building is what really ads to the whole atmosphere and experience!!! In the winter the fireplace is always burning in the lobby!!! The service is excellent and the rooms were very clean and comfortable. The continental breakfast is served in the lower level which is Room 13, a very traditional speakeasy. Breakfast is more than adequate and any special requests were met by David the Inn Keeper who is also a joy to talk to. The location of the Inn is excellent with many little bars and restaurants within walking distance. This is definitely a place we would recommend to stay when in Chicago!!!! read more

Having always been intrigued by the "Roaring Twenties," this establishment has allowed me the opportunity to feel and experience what life was like during that period. This review is of the Room 13 "speakeasy" in the basement of the hotel, as there is no separate Yelp page for it. I put on a suit and walked down to Room 13 on a Saturday night to hear Vince Willis play. After a brief explanation from the doorman (through the hole in the door) that their policies have changed and I had to be a member and know the password to enter, I was handed a printed application and asked to leave. Nevermind the fact that I've performed there in the past. I stood there in stunned silence as the people behind me whispered the password and were let inside. Are there other bars in Chicago that require membership? I understand that a little exclusivity is sexy, but establishments like Room 13 are giving Chicago a bad name as a jazz town. Performers, venues, and fans should be working to make the music more accessible, not throwing up arbitrary barriers to confuse and confound even the natives. I was given absolutely zero recourse but to leave; I would have been happy to pay a cover (or even fill out the membership application on the spot) but that wasn't presented as an option. I'll have to hear Vince Willis play somewhere else as I won't be returning here in the future. read more

I have read and understand many of the complaints that others have posted in reviews. I think that many of these complaints can be chalked up to expectations that are not accurate. This is a small, privately run bed and breakfast, which provides a comfortable place to sleep at a reasonable price. A continental breakfast is served in the morning. This is not a five-star hotel. It is a convenient place to jump off from in Lakeview. Virginia and Todd make it clear that you can contact them if you need anything or have any issues. Vouchers for Trader Todd's down the street are a nice perk, as is the dark chocolate that was provided in our room. It is an old building, so some noise may drift in from other parts of the building. I recommend trying it at least once and not coming in with Ritz-Carlton expectations. read more

This is only for Room 13. I took my girlfriend here for her birthday thinking we were in for a cool night at a speakeasy. Oh boy were we wrong. We got there to find out that the piano player had canceled for the night and... Well... No one else was there - it was literally empty except for the bartender, who wouldn't stop telling us about her career as an actress performing in children's shows. This place is literally the dumpy basement that they couldn't find anything to do with and decided they'd try to sell a cool idea... Unfortunately, the idea flops big time - the place smells faintly of mildew, they have inconsistent turnout and service, etc. Its' terrible. tl;dr - Don't waste your time making a to-do out of it - big risk given there's a chance it could be empty, very little reward. read more

I recently stayed here and was very satisfied with everything. The Inn Keeper was quite accommodating when he didn't have to be, and exemplified Customer Service. The Inn itself has a lot of charm, and was quite comfortable. Getting a daily food voucher for the pub a couple of doors down was unexpected and appreciated, as was the daily parking permit for a street only one short block away, I always found a spot easily. I never got up early enough for the breakfast, but the Inn Keeper left it out for me anyway just in case. And the voucher and parking permit were always left out for me at the front desk as well. I felt the reasonable rates were also an excellent value for everything I got, especially in that neighborhood. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone, and stay there again myself on my next visit. read more

My boyfriend and I stayed here the night before Valentines Day. The hotel is very charming and in a perfect location. We got in a little late (around 1am) and the speakeasy was already closed (on a Friday night I thought that was odd). The breakfast isn't much, just cereal and coffee cake but the manager David will help you in any way he can and was very friendly. Our room was in the back and got quite cold. The blanket on the bed was pretty scratchy and the TV wouldn't turn on but they had board games which turned out to be a better alternative. Overall, the room was cozy and the historic decoration made me feel removed from the bustle of Wrigleyville. I would recommend the inn for anyone on a romantic staycation on a budget. read more

Great location for us. We usually stay downtown but couldn't find a deal this time. This was even better though. We didn't have to pay for parking and usually found a spot within 5 blocks of the Inn. The room was a bit small but that's what we were expecting. The room could use a few hooks and a chair. I had no where to hang a coat or a towel or anything really. Our stay 10/1--10/5 could not have been any better. We called upon arriving at O'Hare and Sara said she would meet us at a preset time, when we arrived there she was to open the door. Next morning we met Max who suggested a couple of restaurants for us...great choices. The room with bath was totally adequate as we weren't in Chicago to sit in a room. The breakfast in the speakeasy is all you need. Unfortunately I pulled a muscle in my back...imagine...didn't stop us . Virginia was absolutely wonderful in assisting us with a drugstore and other minor medical needs,( don't think a hotel would have gone to the length she did). We stayed over a weekend in April 2018 and had a bad experience. The Inn is a rundown townhouse with a 'speakeasy' in the basement. Our room was on the second floor with a detached bathroom. Our bedroom was cold and we had to ask for a space heater. Someone had left the windows open, perhaps to let out cigarette smoke, as the room smelled of smoke and mildew. One of the light fixtures was broken and the WiFi, if it exists, was down all weekend. The bathroom was dirty, with grime on the walls and shower curtain, and the shower drain was stopped up with hair. The towel racks had fallen off the walls. The carpets and rugs everywhere were dirty and grimy. The 'breakfast' part of the 'bed and breakfast,' consisted of packets of dry oatmeal, yogurt and (rotten) oranges. Easy in, east out to Wrigley from the train. Our 3rd floor room was spacious, clean and comfy. The innkeeper was gracious and knew the neighbor well, to make recommendations. Sure, we heard street traffic, but it is the city and we were there for the Cubs game! The floors squeak, but that is what you'd expect in a 100+ year old building. Do not believe ANYTHING on their cozy little website.... this place is a dump in a marginal area of town. In spite of what is published, almost ALL bathrooms are SHARED, without any sanitization efforts. They were never cleaned the whole time, and have no hand sanitizer, soap dispensers, toilet seat covers or paper towels. Fixtures are dirty, moldy, outdated and in poor working condition. Rooms do not have adequate door locks, floors, closets, furnishings are in dis-repair. Noisy!! Dark, dank, mouldy, depressing!! Narrow hallways and squeaky floors- you can hear everyone, and they can hear you. Outdated televisions with only a few channels. Horrible!! AVOID!!! Also, the bus stop on Belmont that they direct you to from the BL from ohare is very dangerous....esp. for tourists with suitcases!!! Do not go there!!! Dangerous!!! read more

My friend and I were very disappointed in this Inn. Adjoining rooms - the Inn keeper couldn't find the key. The lighting was scant. Since the TV Dish was damaged... No TV. Couldn't read either ( no lamps by the beds) The bath mat was dirty and stained. It wasn't cleaned every day as it should have been. No towel bar and no vanity to set your toiletries on. The street is loud all through the night. We were told that there was a backup of sewage in the speakeasy (Room 13) two weeks before. I would definitely not recommend The Old Chicago Inn. read more

My experience with Old Chicago Inn over the past three years has been excellent! Innkeepers Virginia and Todd Hyatt are extremely attentive, AND they own the bar two doors down called Trader Todd's. This makes OCI an excellent base of operations for visiting family (I was born & raised in Chicago--this is the neighborhood where I "misspent" my youth), as well as seeing the sights of Chicago. There is a major transit node around the corner, and all Chicago is at your fingertips. Zipcar is readily available, too. When i asked Virginia where the nearest laundromat might be located, she simply took my laundry and the housekeeping staff washed my stuff. Service PLUS!! Each guest at the Inn receives a $10 food voucher at Trader Todd's (rated "Best Karaoke in Chicago" by Playboy) every day they stay. The neighborhood is cool, with plenty of bars, and Wrigley Field is just up the street. Old Chicago Inn is my B&B of choice in Chicago!!! read more

I just spent this past weekend in Chicago for a couple of concerts at The Vic Theatre on North Sheffield Avenue. I thought it would be a lot more convenient for me to book a room in the vicinity in which I could walk to the venue instead of relying on public transit. After much consideration, I opted for Old Chicago Inn. My room was on the second floor. Yeah there is no AC and I couldn't open a window but temps were not bad. The ceiling fan actually kept the room cool enough. Service was great. David, the caretaker was really friendly and helpful. The free continental breakfast was delicious. Saved me $$$ from having to go out for breakfast. I didn't go to Room 13, a speakasy bar which requires knowing the password to get in since I had been on my feet all night at one of two concerts I went to at The Vic and was exhausted. I didn't let the noise in the bed and breakfast bother me so much. I am a light sleeper anyways. Bed was absolutely comfortable. I also appreciated the $10 voucher for Trader Todd's. If I ever go back to The Vic for a show, I definitely will be booking a room and Old Chicago Inn. I enjoyed my stay there. read more

The Inn Keeper, David, is amazing and will help you with whatever you need. It's an old, creaky house, and you hear pretty much everything inside and out. The bathrooms are not attached to the room, we had our own private bathroom and were able to lock it. It is a little inconvenient to have to go down the hall and unlock/lock your bathroom. There's a small selection for breakfast food, and it's served in Room 13. If you're looking for a luxury hotel, this is not the place. It's in my favorite neighborhood of Chicago (Lakeview/Boystown) there's lots of amazing restaurants, bars, and shops. You are provided food vouchers for Trader Todd's, and you get a parking pass for your car. This really gives you a unique experience while staying in Chicago. read more

We stayed here in July. This was our first stay at a B&B, and we loved it!! Great cozy atmosphere with lots of character. We can't wait to stay there again. David, the Inn Keeper was fabulous!! He is so friendly, and very helpful. We loved eating at Trader Todd's. We ate there everyday, and loved everything we ordered. The food and service were outstanding! This is a very pet friendly place. Just make sure your fur child is friendly, well socialized, and potty trained. The rooms are cozy but we only came back to rooms to sleep and were out and about the entire day. We did leave our dog once for one outing but we kenneled her. Make sure you have a dog who doesn't have anxiety issues and will cry/bark when you are gone bc the walls are thin. Having your bathroom in the hallway was no problem. Bathrooms are literally across your room or next door to your room. Privacy wasn't an issue since every time i walked in the halls no one was there. The location was great. Everything in walking distance. The speak easy bar was also another great experience as a guest at this bed and breakfast. Staying here was def. the "Chicago experience." read more

I've stayed here twice in the past few years, and while the place is OK, on the high side of reasonably priced (for Chicago) and well-situated, they could still do a much better job. Now I remember why I didn't love it the first time. As other reviewers have noted, the dim lighting, slightly sterile, dingy feel to the place and inconveniences like a lack of coat hooks in the rooms are inexcusable. And no reading light by the bed? C'mon people. That's Hospitality 101 stuff. I found the "breakfast" part of the deal weak too. The hotelkeeper David was perfectly nice and attentive, but I get the sense the absentee owners are just milking their investment and not really interested in kicking it up a notch. So this "inn" shouldn't be your first choice. Too bad. read more

The Old Chicago Inn is a European style Bed and Breakfast with an emphasis on hospitality from the staff. The rooms are small and the facilities old, but it's comfortable, clean, and safe. The bed included a snugly warm down duvet to ward off the cold rainy night! The plush robes for guests really were, the free Wi-Fi was fast, a complementary membership to a nearby gym (which I didn't use) was included, and breakfast was served until 11 a.m. with coffee, juice, milk, cereal, and delicious fresh baked pastries. Trader Todd's is a popular bar next door that also has food. Room 13, the Inn's own basement speakeasy, is open Friday and Saturday evenings and offers a quieter, more relaxing atmosphere, featuring unique early 20th Century cocktails (my favorite was "The Clover Club") and on some evenings live jazz. Bartenders and waitresses in both were friendly and gave great service. The inn is located in a busy and safe neighborhood within a two minute walk from the Belmont Red/Brown/Purple Line CTA "L" Station. It is convenient to both fine and popular restaurants and other shopping conveniences. For baseball fans, it's an easy walk or one stop train ride to Wrigley Field. This is a very old, but clean property with first class hospitality. It's not modern with all the bells and whistles, but I'll be back because it's clean, safe, friendly and likely the best value in Chicago! read more
