Excellent service. This stop was part of our tour of Jamestown/Yorktown. The tour guide explained that we would eat like the colonials, which it itself is pretty neat. A fruit salad to start (a slice of a canned peach, a slice of pear and something that looked like mayo or cottage cheese on a bed of 1 lettuce leaf). Lol. It tasted good so I didn't mind. Main course consisted of Brunswick Stew and (2) homemade flat biscuits with a very salty Virginia ham. Once again according to our tour guide, the ham was salty but if we tried to real Virginia ham, this option was much much less saltier. Desert was a buttermilk pie which to me tasted like a lemony/sour jelly cake. Texture-wise it was different. Hard to explain. Glad to at least experience what it may have been like in the colonial days. And the gift shop is pretty awesome too!! read more

Drive up to this quaint old house, love the welcoming porch. Of course and older gentleman comes out so excited to share his dining selection. Like the rest of this town I was hoping the food wasn't old and boring. There is a cute sign about not letting out the cat um what!?!? We were shown to our antique table and this place is so cute and done up nicely. The service was fast and courteous coffee was good, mimosa is huge but mostly juice didn't even see a bubble. Had the "recommended" blueberry pancakes and he was right they are light fluffy and the blueberry compote is nice no need for syrup. The cheese eggs and biscuits are very nice eggs are fluffy. Biscuits are rectangle flat and interesting very tasty but different then what your used too. Food was great and flavorful. Only thought is if you like a big breakfast this might be a stretch for you. Other then that I would highly suggest this little restaurant for a stop when your out that way. read more

I wish this place was open for dinner all week. We managed to squeeze in a lunch on our last day in town and it was totally amazing. The house itself is adorable and adds to the whole experience. The menu is limited, but hits all the expected traditional offerings. We got the fruit salad (canned peach, pineapple and some grapes with a yogurt/sour cream topping) and chicken and dumplings for the girls. I got a sample plate with Brunswick Stew and Ham Biscuits and the husband got a plate with Ham biscuits and I think pulled pork or something like that. Ours came with our own fruit salad as well. Everything was yummy and our waitress, Virginia, was a delight, engaging with the girls and keeping them in line! We had chocolate cream and coconut cream pie for dessert - large slices that we had plenty enough to share with the girls. Whole meal with beverages was about $50. One of our favorite stops while in Williamsburg! Staff is always very friendly and your coffee cup is never empty. The food is delivered hot, fresh and quickly. The pancakes are some of the thickest and fluffiest I have ever seen. Authentic county salt cured ham, bacon and fresh sausage. The creamed ham over roast or biscuits is creamy and flavorful but remember it's made with salt cured ham so salt you won't need to add salt. This is a wonderful dining experience comparable with the restaurants in Colonial Williamsburg, at a less expensive price point. In fact the food here is better than any restaurant in the restored area ! I am always greeted by wonderful staff that have never wavered on their recipes. Ya know how there are certain movies you watch because they are classics, like Gone With the Wind or National Lampoons Christmas Vacation? Old Chickahominy is a classic restaurant! I have been enjoying breakfast and lunch at Old Chickahominy since I was too young to remember. The restaurant is in an old southern style home, and there's a unique gift shop inside too! The atmosphere is quaint and welcoming. The front porch swing is the perfect place to enjoy the breeze. The family that owns it are such nice people. They always greet us all by name and super friendly. Not only is the atmosphere unique, but the food is too! Their fruit salad is like none I've ever had...almost like a deconstructed ambrosia. The biscuits are incredibly delightful, especially with good ole Virginia ham between them! But most importantly, their desserts are always classic, southern pies and crumbles. I make it a point to go to Old Chickahominy every time I'm in or near Williamsburg. It's worth going out of your way for. read more

This is an A-OK place to eat, but it is better to have been there to eat than to go there to eat. It is similar to a near-death experience which everybody needs one of. The food is okay but the charm is in the interior of the house and all the merchandise they have for sale. I had Miss Melinda's Special which is a Brunswick Stew, ham on a biscuit, and fruit salad. The "fruit salad" is a peach half, a slice of pineapple, grated cheese, and a blob of mayonnaise on a leaf of lettuce. It was good but I'm not big on peach, pineapple and mayonnaise. The Brunswick Stew very very good and warm. The biscuit was very large and the ham was in the middle of it somewhere. Everything had great taste and flavor. The Buttermilk pie and the Chocolate pie was very tasty. The Buttermilk pie is more like an Egg Custard Pie. I liked the taste of the chocolate because it was not too sweet and it had a rich chocolate flavor. I enoyed the meal but the best part was the Gift Shop experience. All the employees are super nice and they have an abundant supple of trinkets and gifts. read more

Now that I'm safely back on the West Coast I'll write my review of this old time standard, as I don't want the locals going cray-cray on me. So, I get the entire Southern hospitality thing, sweet tea, Missy this and sir that, free refills, pie with your meals, plates being cleared by an older gentleman who always asked to excuse himself whenever he reached across you for a dish or had to make a refill. What I don't get are the "biscuits".... In short, they come up flat. As in flat as a pancake or maybe a hoe cake, whatever this style of "biscuit" is I'm not a fan. I opted for the Miss Melinda's Special - Cup of Brunswick Stew, Old Virginia Ham on Hot Biscuits, Fruit Salad, Homemade Pie, Coffee or Tea, for a dollar more I was offered a bowl of the stew, which I decide to get, good thing I did. The stew was more of a soup, it was okay, nothing really special and then those "biscuits" which in actuality are basically just pita bread. Salty shingles of ham were stuffed into the pita bread, and that was it, pretty basic, and lacking. The best part of our meal was the pie! MIL and I opted for the Buttermilk pie, which was a lemon custard type, it was wonderful and saved the day. The "antique" shop next door was strange, lots of reproductions and stuff that didn't seem all that "old"....cute shop cat.... We waited 14 years to get to try this place, I'm glad it wasn't on my bucket list. read more

In our Farewell Tour of South Central Virginia before we move to Florida, we had to get in one last breakfast at the Old Chickahominy House. My husband's family, who lives in Virginia Beach, has been coming here for decades, and after my first time here I could see why. OCH is unique. Based in a small old house west of William & Mary, it only serves breakfast and lunch. Most of the house is taken up by a gift shop. Over the years, we've bought everything from prints to Christmas cards to sweaters, but there's always whimsical new stuff to check out. There's also Melinda, a friendly tuxedo cat who hangs out in the gift shop. Both she and her predecessor, the late Mr. Biscuit, have been well trained not to enter the restaurant section, so rest easy, germphobes. You're going to wait for a table, particularly on the weekends unless you get there very early. There are two dining rooms, both on the small side, crowded with mismatched antique-looking tables and chairs. Most of the artwork on the walls is for sale. We know because we've bought some. Although I've eaten lunch here, we and others in the know come for breakfast. Servers, many of which have been there for twenty-plus years, will cheerfully bring you coffee, tea or fruit juice. My husband, who doesn't like eggs, generally gets pancakes and bacon. I always get the Plantation Breakfast, which is two eggs, bacon, sausage, country ham, grits and a biscuit. Note about the biscuits--I've read many complaints about the biscuits not being "southern style." They are rectangular and only about half an inch thick. Actually, if you traveled back in time to Colonial Williamsburg and asked for a biscuit, this is what you'd get. When we've come for lunch, we stick with the Brunswick stew and biscuits. The stew is more like a soup, and it goes great with the biscuits. The food won't blow you away, but it's tasty and filling and served with a smile. But with lunch comes ... pie. And it's REALLY GOOD pie. You won't go wrong with any of them, but if apple crumb is on the menu GET IT. Occasionally we've been able to score a slice of pie with breakfast. Whole pies are available for sale too, and tons of locals hit OCH up for their Thanksgiving Day pie needs. This isn't Denny's or IHOP. Larger people may find the seating uncomfortable, and I definitely wouldn't recommend OCH to families with very small children. But if you're in Williamsburg, stop in. Browse the gift shop, pet Melinda, and enjoy a meal in a pleasant colonial setting. read more

This old house is home to some wonderful country ham biscuits. And these are not your bisquick biscuits. These are rectangular and flat - soooo buttermilky. I love their chicken and dumplings (also like none you have ever tried), their brunswick stew and their chocolate pie. Sigh. The praise flowed between tastes of the delectable dish, hailing it as "The best I've ever had" and "I may need to forever suffer through the rest of my life knowing that all other chicken and dumplings servings will be subpar." OK. First of all, I have no idea how anyone can have a negative review of this place. Second of all, how can it possibly be overpriced? My fiance and I stopped here on our way out of Williamsburg back up to DC. We both got the Plantation Breakfast. 2 eggs, 2 crazy delicious flat biscuits the size of pop tarts, sausage, bacon, VA ham, grits AND coffee or tea for $9. $9!!! What else do you need? We both had a huge plate of food which was not too much food, but just right and our bill was $17 and some change. The sweet tea was phenomenal. The biscuits were flat, which was new to us, but they tasted so good that we bought a little booklet from the gift shop that had the recipe inside. I'm going to try making them at home for sure. The ham wasn't too salty for us. The grits were a good consistency. Not too runny. We got there right at 10:15 and they politely sat us and served us with nary a word about their hours. The menu is small, but if you're looking for a fancy city brunch spread, you may be looking in the wrong town. As far as I could tell from my searching, it's mostly just pancake houses and diners. Visitors to Williamsburg can't help but notice the ubiquitous "Pancake House" thing, and after a few trips around town it's only natural to develop a craving for good pancakes, what with all the signs. Here's a free tip: don't look for good pancakes at any establishment with "Pancake" in the name. Get thee to Old Chickahominy House instead. Best pancakes in Williamsburg, right here. If some local household gourmet happens to make better pancakes than the Old Chickahominy, their friends and relatives had better watch out lest they die of pleasure at the breakfast table. Seriously; my own homemade pancakes are only sometimes better than these. We've only been there for breakfast, so I can't comment on their famous Brunswick stew or chicken 'n' dumplings, but I'll also declare that their creamed ham is delicious, they know how to cook an egg exactly to order, the coffee is quite tasty and fully strong enough (a rarity in Williamsburg), the service is super friendly (if a tad hoverish) and the joint itself is a converted Old Dominion house with lots of floor space set aside as a gift shop. A word about the biscuits: some of the negative reviews are critical of Old Chickahominy's biscuits, which aren't your typical type. They're a little salty and rolled very flat, kind of a cross between standard Southern biscuits and something more like old-fashioned "ship's biscuit". (Legend has it that the previous owner of the house liked 'em that way, and it stuck.) Call it a biscuit-pita or biscuit-panini and you're not far off. Basically, if you need your biscuits to be mile-high and fluffy, just substitute toast while you're here and get your biscuit fix elsewhere. Personally, I thought they were a nice change of pace, and they went really well with the creamed ham. They're closed between 10:30 and 11:30, so best decide whether you want breakfast or lunch before you come. read more

I just moved to town and love going out to breakfast places, so I was super excited to be living near a place with such great reviews. But, after eating there once, I will never be going back. In fact, I wish I could get that hour of my life back. Very low-quality food with absolutely nothing to flavor it except salt. My date had bacon, sausage and grits. We always laugh because she is the least picky person I know and likes absolutely everything she eats -- but, she said this was the worst breakfast she's ever had. She described the grits as completely tasteless, the sausage as the sort of thing you would get in an elementary school cafeteria, and the bacon as the poorest quality of bacon meat she'd ever had. I had the Old Virginia Ham, which is great if you like every bite of your food to taste like putting a tablespoon of salt in your mouth. The "biscuits" are really just a sort of dense, bland, flat bread rectangle -- think 'biscuit' as used in the phrase 'dog biscuit' rather than 'buttermilk biscuit'. The place smells like a combination of musty basement and wet dog. It boasts about its southern hospitality, but our server was incredibly rude and short with us, coming rarely to our table, and saying as little as possible to us, without a smile. The gift shop area is kind of an interesting place to contemplate suicide while coming to terms with the fact that you have just eaten the worst meal of your life, but ultimately it is just a bunch of overpriced, useless trinkety crap. Some say that Cracker Barrel stole their theme from the Old Chickahominy House, so I was ready to take sides and be convinced that Cracker Barrel was just an inferior copy of something much greater... But, I'm sorry to say that in my opinion Cracker Barrel is at least 10 times better than this place (and I don't even like Cracker Barrel). read more

Yummmmmmmm! My husband and I have been here twice for breakfast on a Sunday and would LOVE to go back for lunch! There is a bit of a wait to get a table but don't worry... there's a great little (actually its bigger than the entire dining area) gift shop attached for pre-breakfast browsing. I've bought a cashmere scarf here for $20 along with several other cute little items. If you are even slightly claustrophobic, obese (as in 300+ lbs) or are traveling with several unruly screaming children... do not eat here. The dining rooms are throughout several little rooms in the house. Most of the tables a small (and very very close) and the chairs can be even smaller (hence the warning). It is absolutely adorable and cozy and makes you feel like you're eating at grandmas house. The menu has many options including MIMOSAS!! I have ordered Miss Melinda's Pancakes and a side of ham each time and was very happy. My husband ordered the same thing with sausage and was also very happy. He lucked out because there was a piece of bacon stuck to the bottom of one of his pancakes (lucky)!! All of the staff and the waitresses are extremely friendly and your cup of coffee will never be empty. It's worth the wait (maybe not an hour wait) and we would eat here again the next time we are in Williamsburg. read more

This is the epitome of a southern restaurant and this place is a gem. Me and my friend came here on a Sunday for breakfast and we knew it was perhaps one of the best breakfasts we've had. I was starving from all the walking from the night before at a hunted tour so I ordered more food than I can eat. When you first enter the place, it would seemingly feel like you're entering into someone's home. We were sort of unsure about where the dining area was since there was no host initially. It was quite confusing since they have an antique shop on the right, which made us question if we had arrived at the right location. But all of that were made okay when we were greeted by a lady with a very charming southern accent to tell us that the dinner room was on the left. When we entered it, a busy waitress quickly sat us in a little room packed with three other tables. Although the seating was tight, we didn't quite mind given how busy the place was inside. There weren't much decor but there was a very homely and warm feel to the place which was very refreshing to be in. I ordered the creamed ham on biscuits and a side of over hard eggs while my friend ordered the Plantation breakfast which came with Old Virginia Ham, Country Bacon, Sausage, Eggs, Grits, Hot Biscuits and Coffee or Tea to drink. When I saw that they were serving grits, I knew I was in a true southern restaurant. The food was so good that we finished everything that was on our plates. Just to let you know, the creamed ham was exceptionally good. I have had my share of creamed ham but this place by far made it the best. We weren't able to try the pancakes or the raved Brunswick stew but me and my friend made a pact that if we return to Williamsburg, we will most definitely order those given how amazing the food was for such a great price. We did not spend more than $20 for the incredible portions of breakfast food. The service was good despite how packed the place was and the servers were all scrambling to get everyone's orders. Our glasses were constantly refilled and servers made sure that we were satisfied with our food and brought additional condiments just in case we needed them. After breakfast, the restaurant had a short break before reopening for lunch which they had turned away a few customers who came for breakfast. So make sure you're here before they close for break! We wanted to absorb more of the atmosphere and I wanted to purchase a keepsake for the trip so we wondered into the antique store in the other wing of the building. They have so many amazing pieces of objects that are very unique as well as commercially made decorations and little trinkets. They were also having a jewelry sale for $6 per item which was great, since I found a couple lovely items that I really liked. I ended up spending an additional $20 for some very unique items from the antique store but everything was so well worth it.. it was great food and great shopping! We will definitely return when we stop by Williamsburg again and I definitely recommend this place for any locals or tourists to bring family, friends for the great food and great antique finds! read more

So, the location is cute from the outside, but once you walk in and realize that you're in a gift shop that happens to sell food, the similarities between "OCH" and Cracker Barrel start to emerge. Only, Cracker Barrel has better food. We were seated quickly and nicely by the staff and as far as service is concerned, absolutely no issue. As for the food, the sausage patties were somehow made of scrapple or something, as they were small, dry and tasted exactly like Habersatts scrapple. Now, I LIKE scrapple, but biting into something labeled as "sausage" and getting the taste of scrapple is incongruous, at best. The eggs were fine, the grits that came with the "Plantation Breakfast" were cold and already had a skin on it the moment it arrived. The sausage was scrapple, and the bacon was obviously cooked hours before and barely reheated. Oh, and then there is the thing with the cat wandering around, looking for scraps. At home, that's cute.. In a restaurant, not so much. Anyway, we went there based on a review on Yelp, which said it was the #1 place for breakfast in Williamsburg. Honestly, an "Aunt Sara's" or even an IHOP would have been a better choice, and if you want the whole gift-shop with food experience, I'd skip "OCH" and go straight to Cracker Barrel. read more

I went here while on vacation with my family for breakfast and was disappointed. Based on the reviews here, I was expected ham biscuits like my great aunt used to make but i was let down. The ham was fatty and in small portion. The pancakes were meh, and sausage had a funny taste to it. There was nothing good to say about the food. Over priced on the food as well, i think it was $10 for two pancakes. The place itself is historic and looks the part. Everything in this half store half restaurant took you back in time. My family has been fortunate to stumble upon this hidden gem many years ago. I think that many of the ladies staffing this old store have been here the entire time. It is one of the few places that I would even consider having my dessert before breakfast or lunch, but I want my pie and I want it as soon as I come in. With a hot cup of coffee, there are no wrong choices. Sometimes, the early bird can't get pie, because they are still in the oven. O, yea, the rest of the food is outstanding as well. Similarly, the service is first rate, friendly and highly attentive. Sadly, the food doesn't live up to the feel if the place. The menu is very limited, and I find it strange that a restaurant touted as a great southern breakfast serves absolutely no gravy. The pancakes are good but nothing to get overly excited about. The sausage is average. They do however serve a great slice of Virginia ham. The coffee is about what you would expect from your average breakfast spot. We visited this place on a weekday morning, which was a good idea. Probably super busy during the weekend! Excellent food, charming shabby chic atmosphere (though the chairs seemed a little rickety), and the staff had all the requisite Southern charm. We got a recommendation for a local beach from a native Williamsburger (om nom nom), and our waitress was so sweet. Genteel, even! Called us "sugar", "honey", and "sweetheart"! :) Eggs were delicious, the ham was outstanding, and the biscuits were good, though a strange rectangular shape and thinner. We took a bus tour with Oleata tour company. They brought us her for lunch. The food was delicious. The best coconut custard homemade pie. Everyone on bus was delighted with the food. 4.5 stars. A "southern plantation" biscuits and ham experience. It's hard to judge the food as I am not a savvy "Southern foodie". BUT I know good food when I taste it, and it's mostly subjective, so take this review from a tourist with its due grain of salt. What I will say is that the biscuits and Virginia ham were like no other (for this Southern Californian) and that we enjoyed our late lunch experience at the old Chickahominy House. I also tried a Southern Devil punch, which was bit like a Bloody Mary with beer. There was a bit of a wait, and they direct you to the gift/curio shop which has a lot of fun and pretty stuff. The dining rooms are small but nicely decorated, "plantation-style", with hardwood floors, dark-wood furniture with a hint of old-World elegance. Not a lot of elbow room, though. Service was attentive (must be the renown "Southern hospitality") and food came out pretty quickly. It's good for kids only if they can sit still and are OK with limited space. Verdict: We're glad we included the Old Chickahominy House in our visit to Williamsburg. A good break from the "colonial/revolutionary war" theme. I don't understand the popularity of this place. The menu is very very small. Maybe 3-4 choices. You can't order from their breakfast menu for lunch which is very disappointing after how long we waited, at least 30 minutes. My chicken and dumplings were ok, nothing special. I think a can of cream of chicken soup was the basis for it. My husband's bbq was dry and lacked flavor. I can't recommend it. read more

My wife's first real taste of southern "Sweet Tea" and I'm pretty sure it changed her life. The service was great, the food was plentiful, the chicken and dumplings were really darn good, but the ham on the ham biscuit fell into the realm of being too salty. The shop itself didn't really have anything of interest for me but it was a nice respite from the rain and it ate up the 30 minute wait time pretty easily. Friendly place and if you're in a hurry it automatically slows you down, that's a quality few roadside spots can boast. read more
