I don't understand the popularity of this place. The menu is very very small. Maybe 3-4 choices. You can't order from their breakfast menu for lunch which is very disappointing after how long we waited, at least 30 minutes. My chicken and dumplings were ok, nothing special. I think a can of cream of chicken soup was the basis for it. My husband's bbq was dry and lacked flavor. I can't recommend it. read more

Not impressive or recommended. We went for breakfast and it was overly slow and not authentic or fully homemade. They serve good homemade biscuits but accompany them with Smuckers instead of homemade jam or apple butter. Plus they intentionally make you wait to get you to spend in the store. I visited Old Chickahominy House on 08/23/2018 on the recommendation of a friend who has been eating there for years. I not only loved the colonial ambiance and gift shops but also enjoyed the Brunswick Stew and Country Ham Biscuits, two of my favorite southern delicacies. The restaurant was crowded and there was a wait, but that gave me time to peruse the shops and enjoy the outside porch. This restaurant will definitely be a regular stop whenever I'm back in Williamsburg. read more

My family and I stumbled on this joint while wandering through Williamsburg on our way to the Jamestown Settlement. I have to say, upon first glance, you cant really see much of the building as it's hidden by trees. However, once on the front porch, you can tell that it used to be someones home. The place is quaint and has a definite southern vibe to it; it's old. It doubles as an antique shop, so half the building is store, half is dining - additionally, everything seems to be for sale (the price tags are left on all the decorations). It's a cute place with tables scattered in the various rooms throughout the house, so you don't necessarily get to see the whole restaurant from where you're seated. It was a bit strange to me when I first walked in, but I warmed up to it. Instantly, the service was wonderful and I felt right at home once we were seated - the waitress was adorable, warm and very hospitable. The menu was very limited and simple, but I honestly didn't mind. In fact, both the lunch and breakfast offerings all fit together on one half-page menu. The food was tasty, well-priced and filling - nothing spectacular, but it was good. A nice place to grab a little lunch, that's what I would call it. All in all, I might return if I was passing through sometime. The atmosphere is peaceful, warm and southern and the food reflects that, which is nice. The meals are all low-price, and I, being a senior in high school, enjoy low priced things. Well, mostly. Oh, and I almost forgot, some entrees come with complimentary slices of pie - and it's some darn good pie. read more

My family and I came into Williamsburg on Friday for a quick vacation. On the way in, before going to the hotel, we stopped at Old Chickahominy House, which we had found via Yelp. Upon entering we were immediately greeted With smiles from the owner and staff. The food is simple but very good and service was quick and friendly. We particularly enjoyed the Virginia ham and the barbecue! We enjoyed it so much so that we returned again for lunch on Sunday. If we're ever back in the area we'll definitely be back to Old Chickahominy House! read more

Great Virginia ham...yummy love me some ham and they had some great ham. Thier flat biscuits were very unique and had a great flavor. The prices were very low and alot of bang for the buck. Very good old fashioned southern cooking. They make the best chicken and dumplings I've had in a restaurant. The rich yellow chicken gravy is how it's supposed to be done. The square cut Virginia ham biscuits are wonderful and we always get a few for "later." The building is less than 40 years old but looks like one with much more history. It is kind of a girly place since it has a great antique and gift shop right there. Perfect for a girls get together or a mother/daughter outing. Know for their Brunswick Stew my wife bought 3 quarts to take home for friends and family. This restaurant is built for speed not comfort. Noted ladder back chairs immediately upon arrival. This restaurant was highly recommended and based on reviews we finally gave it a try. I was not impressed, I found the food rather bland, although reasonably priced and the seating was haphazard and uncomfortable. We waited for over thirty minutes in the overpriced gift shop and by the end of it all, I really regretted going here. I cannot say enough good things about this place. First of all, there is a super friendly and adorable cat named Melinda that wanders around the gift shop. My fiance commented that she should be named smudge because she has a single black streak on an otherwise white muzzle. You should definitely call ahead to get your name on the list, it fills up fast. They only do breakfast and lunch since they close at 2:30. The atmosphere of this place is just great. It is literally in a house - you can see where each of the rooms are sectioned off. The food is yummy. I've been there twice and both times I had Ms. Melinda's special. It's coffee/tea, fruit salad (this was actually strange - we got a peach half with two pineapple slices, covered in shredded cheese with ranch. It was tasty!), hot ham on biscuits, Brunswick Stew, and a piece of pie. Oh, the pie. I ordered buttermilk pie and it was DELICIOUS. My fiance had chocolate pie and it was really good, too. I'm a septuagenarian from Virginia so have fairly high standards for Brunswick Stew and ham biscuits. The Brunswick Stew at the Chickahominy gets high marks if not like Mom used to make. The country ham was OK but I prefer real biscuits rather than the flat bread that serves for biscuits at the Chickahominy. The buttermilk pie is very good as is the coffee. The service was excellent. All in all the Chickahominy is worth a visit not only for the food but also for a stroll after your meal through their antique shop. We will stop there again. read more

We stopped in for lunch today at the Chickahominy house, we waited about 15 minutes to be seated but we're fine to wait as they have a very cute gift shop that easily occupied our time. We ordered the julienne salad which came with chopped celery, cheese, ham, and chicken on top a bed of lettuce. Salad was great and plenty big enough, the ham was the best part of the salad the chicken was boiled and plain, but the dressing helped that. also had a cup of Brunswick stew which needed salt but otherwise was very tasty. We also had the ham biscuits which were delicious as always. Took our pie to go but I'm sure that will taste great also! Parking is a pain here but otherwise it is a great little spot! read more

Got the plantation breakfast, which includes: Virginia ham - Super salty ham Eggs - Cooked as good as an egg could get Hot biscuits - A little disappointing, were more like dry flatbread Grits - No comment. My wife and I went for lunch and after 15 minute wait were seated and the staff were very service oriented. BUT then the food - frankly I don't get why people eat there - I had the lunch platter which started with a "fruit salad" - really a canned peach half, canned pineapple slice, and a spoonful of mayo - pretty unimpressive. Then my ham and biscuit "sandwich" - two of their thin tasteless biscuits and a very little bit of shaved ham - nothing special. My wife had the chicken and dumplings - chicken was fine, gravy was bland, and dumplings were undercooked and hard. We mentioned it to the waitress and she assured us they were fine even tho we showed her the undercooked dumpling. Got choc. pie for dessert which was OK but crust was like cardboard. This place has history behind it, but other than that....not much else. After reading the reviews about how this was a "true southern breakfast" and delicious on top of that, and wanting a country ham biscuit sammich like they were going out of style, my husband and I as well as the couple we are sharing the weekend with decided we'd hit this place up on the way to Willliamsburg Winery (they're about a mile from each other). It was pretty vacant for 9:30 on a Saturday morning and we were seated right away. The breakfast menu is very limited - basically, you can order the Plantation Platter (2 eggs cooked to order, a piece of sausage, 2 pieces of bacon, a piece of country ham, an order of grits, and 2 biscuits) for $9.95 or some variation thereof. They did offer mimosas for $3.95 and it seemed to be fresh squeezed, although very tart. Our food came out quickly but sadly left much to be desired. The sausage was decent but nothing overwhelming. The bacon was bacon. The country ham was not very salty and it was a very thin piece that was more fat than anything else. I didn't eat the eggs (gave them to my husband). The grits were very clearly instant grits and tasted like them. Lastly, the piece de resistance of any true Southern meal - the biscuits - they were fresh but flat as all get out. It's like they use baking powder than baking soda so that they don't rise. I was oh so disappointed with my meal. I will say that the service is very friendly and that's always a plus but beyond that, I don't see any reason to go out of the way to eat here or visit again when I come back to Williamsburg. You could get a better meal with more options elsewhere. read more

We ate here for breakfast a few months ago. First of all, we like going out for brunch, but the breakfast hours here truly disappoint. They are only open for breakfast from 0830 to 1015 AM. WHAT?? What, exactly, is up with that? Then they close for about an hour and a half or so, and reopen for lunch. You can't get a reservation either, so get there right at 0830 if you like breakfast like I do. It's tiny on the inside and our table was very very small for all the food we got. No room for big or even medium sized groups in this place. Not a very extensive menu either. You basically have two choices, pancakes or Plantation breakfast which is eggs, biscuits, and Virginia ham. Hungry Husband got pancakes and I got the Plantation breakfast. The pancakes were really thick and dry. The Virginia ham was seriously salty. I'm not from VA, so I'm not sure what it's supposed to taste like, but I'm talkin' SALTY. The biscuits were square and interesting. I never saw a flat, square biscuit before (but hey, I'm a Yankee, what can I say). Fancy drinks of juice were carried out on a big platter and waved in front of us, which of course we then ordered, which of course ended up being an expensive addition to the check. The breakfast was overall okay, but way overpriced. I did enjoy the colonial type decor and the cute gift shop. I might go there again if I can remember to get there right at 0830. read more

This restaurant was recommended by a friend so we decided to give it a try. We stopped in for a late lunch and were seated immediately in a dining room with antique tables and chairs. I felt as if I was in someone's personal dining room. Before we were even asked what we would like to drink, a server arrived with a tray of sweetened and unsweetened tea and water. My youngest son and I chose the chicken and dumplings which were as close to my great grandmother's as any I have ever had. The others in my party had Brunswick stew, Virginia ham and biscuits with fruit salad. The fruit salad was very simple but delicious. I wanted Virginia ham before I scooted out of VA and I got my fix here. The Old Chickahominy House serves up some of the most amazing dry ham sandwiches on square, flat biscuits. It was just one of those done deals. They also sell chopped ham in a large styrofoam cup for only a couple dollars. I took me and my girlfriend several days to finish the entire cup while we mixed up some chopped ham and mayo for sandwiches. read more
