The Old Saloon located in Emigrant, Montana right in the heart of Paradise Valley. This Saloon is the quintessential vibe of my perception of Montana. I loved loved loved it here. The Saloon is of the Old West vibe, down to the swing doors, inside it's full of old wood, mounted animals that are present in the area. The staff and the customers were so friendly and eager to learn our story as well as sharing theirs from years of living in this area of Montana. It really was a great experience and one of the highlights of our trip. It's also located about 40 minutes from The North Entrance to Yellowstone National Park but unfortunately for their business this access to Yellowstone is currently closed due to the recent flooding in June. It has really affected their bottom dollar. Hopefully they will sustain until the reopening. If you are in the area, go in and support this fabulous authentic family owned restaurant. read more

After experiencing several meals in the Yellowstone area that took an hour for our food to arrive (and up to 2 hours total from start to finish), it was refreshing to come here and receive quick service. Our waitress was extremely friendly and helpful, giving us recommendations and accommodating our requests. Soup and salad came out within minutes of ordering. I had a spinach salad with bacon, dried, dried cranberries, toasted walnuts, and shallot vinaigrette - it was refreshing and delicious. My parents got a chicken enchilada soup that was seasoned perfectly. For my entree, I got chicken fried steak with a side of Mac & cheese. It was good! The breading was crispy, it was a big portion size, and it went well with the gravy. The Mac & cheese was rich and creamy. I also tried a bit of my mom's sirloin, which was cooked medium just as she ordered it. The seasoning was spot on. And finally, their special of the day was Rocky Mountain "oysters" (go ahead and Google it). My brother was feeling adventurous and wanted to try them - I decided to give it a shot too. It wasn't really gross like I was afraid it might be...a little chewy, but it was fried and came with buffalo sauce, so that probably helped. Not going to go out of my way to order them in the future, but at least I can say I tried them! This restaurant has a cool Wild West vibe to it with great food and service. On a recent visit to Montana we were staying at an Airbnb not too far from Old Saloon and decided to eat out on our last night. The restaurant and bar are connected but have a wall that separates them from each other so you aren't dining in the bar. We started with some cocktails and had the huckleberry margarita and mojito. Both were a bit sweet but more tart and overall really good! During our trip I'd sampled a lot of elk and had to give their elk meatloaf a try with the mushroom gravy and a side of mac and cheese. The mac was decent but nothing spectacular and the elk meatloaf was a little bit burned on the sides, but what completely saved the day was the mouthwatering mushroom gravy I sampled. Now you may be thinking that gravy is gravy, but I'm from the South and know good gravy. This was some of the best that I've ever had before. It was rich but not too heavy and just incredible. I would highly recommend making a stop at Old Saloon for a drink and meal, but definitely get the mushroom gravy!! read more

This place is great. The restaurant side had good food.. The meatloaf and mushroom gravy was amazing. The prices were reasonable and portions are large. After eating we ventured over to the bar/saloon side and had a great time. It was super packed but both the clientele and the staff were super friendly and everyone was having a great time. We stopped here on our way out of the Paradise Valley. Heard a lot about it and had to experience it. It's was great, FYI, it's called the Old Saloon for a reason. Been around since 1902. So if you're looking for some fancy remade place, this might not be for you. The bartenders were great, and they recommended we come back Sunday for the official summer opening which included a concert. So we did, and even though they were jam packed, she recognized us and went out of her way to talk to us. Cheap drinks, great atmosphere! Slightly above average food, average service, nestled in a super cool decor in a this old-school style saloon in the middle of nowhere south of Livingston. Absolutely nothing wrong with this joint - except not a single member of the staff was wearing a mask, and per Montana regulations during COVID they're supposed to be wearing masks from what I've been told. Aside from the mask disappointment, it's totally a decent stop. It's not over the top and going to wow you, but it's a good dinner with tasty drinks, and you're not going to leave disappointed. The Old Saloon is an absolute must. What a surprise, my husband and I were staying up the road in a cabin for a few days visiting Yellowstone and didn't feel like cooking so we went to Old saloon fully expecting just bar bites and a bit of nostalgia. We were wonderfully surprised, their wine list rivals some places we go to in DC and for half the price, the food is fantastic and the service even better. Maggie took wonderful care of our family and we enjoyed the atmosphere and friendly guests. Definitely make sure to stop by for dinner, what an unexpected treat. read more

We have heard about this place the entire time we have been here, but unfortunately Tuesday and Wednesday they only serve food until 7pm but inly the lunch menu. So that put a bummer on us, but we called ahead from our drive home from the park and managed to get a bite for take out. I got a Caesar salad with grilled chicken and my fiancé wanted the elk meatloaf but that wasn't offered today, so instead he got the BLTTA, which was still good. I really wanted to give this place a 4 star review only because its just a cool spot and with some colorful history. History, charm, Montana decor, solid food served with friendly promptness--all not available in Gardiner. Large portions (steak promised 8 oz was easily 12 oz plus tender and flavorful) plus huge baked potato and large fresh spinach salad with walnuts, cranberries, blue cheese and tasty vinaigrette for $24. I've had a very sub par burger and fries in a basket for more than that in Gardiner. Pretty drive between and watched a herd of 30 elk, so your choice is clear! read more

The people in my party had the salmon, the chicken fried steak, and the chicken with pasta. They all reported the food was good. Unfortunately, I chose the elk meatloaf and it was cremated. I don't even know why they put it on a plate and served it to me it was so black. The mushroom gravy was delicious, but an ocean of mushroom gravy wouldn't have saved that bison meat loaf. We came last night for a concert. I have to say, this was a very well ran event. Everyone was helpful, amazing service and genuine attitudes that only added to this event. The prime rib was a special for Easter Sunday and it was absolutely fabulous. The bake spud and the Cesar salad complimented perfectly. Try a Neptune's Rye Ale. It was great. Definitely stop by if your on your way in to Yellowstone or Sage Lodge. Definitely a no regrets strategy. Took the cherry pie to go. Surprisingly good food here. Some of the best chicken fried steak that I have ever had and it is hard to compete with the South. The elk meatloaf was also good. My biggest complaint was the inattentive staff. They need to pay attention to their customers and understand the menu better when a new customer ask questions about the menu. It is also a pet peeve of mine when they don't pay attention to the food sitting under the heating lamps. I noticed several peoples food sitting as the servers were not paying attention. This is probably why the meatloaf was not served that hot and more luke warm. read more

Yeah it's a great bar if you're looking for awful cocktails, shitty beer selection and a group of swine shouting, "white lives matter" out in front of the establishment. I ordered an old fashioned, and what I got was a SLICE of orange and FIVE cherries muddled in some whiskey with no bitters. I literally had to stop this dude from pouring cherry juice into my drink. So, I guess if you drink whiskey like a child this place is awesome. okay, looks like this dude decided to write me a poorly thought out response, to which I will now respond to each of his points. Point 1: Your bar tender was irritated that they had to make a cocktail, instead of just pouring whiskey shots, because that's how whiskey "should be enjoyed". --Sorry, I haven't taken a shot since highschool, and if you like shooting good bourbon, this is the bar for you. Also get less shitty bartenders. Point 2: An "old fashioned" is somehow both a fancy California cocktail AND a cocktail that has been made since prohibition. Actually both are false. It isn't from California and it's nearly 200 years old. No, obviously I don't remember how it was made after prohibition because I'm not over a hundred years old, you moron. Point 3: No, an old fashioned has never been made with fruit juice. If you like your old fashioned made with fruit juice, again this is the bar for you. Point 4: I should be grateful that this bar was open at all as opposed to California where thousands are dying from a virus and can't be opened. Um, no. This bar, and apparently it's management are awful, I'll just continue to drink at home rather than be subjected to their shitty drinks and racist patrons. Me and my husband had been on a 9 day motorcycle trip through Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and Canada and this was our last stop on the trip before heading home. We rented a small little place about a quarter of a mile from the Old Saloon. We walked there and sat in the bar area and had some refreshing drinks. Great server and great atmosphere. We knew when we walked in we would enjoy this place! After some adult beverages and just enjoying the place we decided to order dinner. I can't say this enough to anyone reading this... This was by far the BEST dinner we have had our whole trip. I ordered the Elk Meatloaf and my husband ordered the Ribeye. You start with the most flavorful salad that I ate every bite of. The meatloaf is so wonderful tasting with just the right amount of herbs and the gravy over it was so tasty! My husband reluctantly shared his plate as I shared mine and he enjoyed his Ribeye so much. Great flavors and cooked perfectly! Don't forget to finish the meal with the cheesecake with huckleberry sauce on it! Heaven in my mouth is probably the best explanation of that wonderful dessert! Great beer selection and GREAT service wanted me to give it 10 stars but unfortunately can't! We will be back when the entrance to Yellowstone reopens! read more
