We are out of towners and stayed in Emigent, which is an area that does not have a lot of options nearby. Old Saloon was closed for the first half of the week we were there (along with all the other food options) but we managed to pop in Wednesday night after a long, exhausting day. We found half of the dining area was closed so there were only about 6 tables available, plus bar seating (we had 8 people). Service was ok, but we did have to ask for refills each time we needed one and for sugar when it was forgotten. The menu was super limited (different than what their online menu showed which was disappointing because we went for certain things and none ended up being on the menu) and really expensive for what we had to choose from (ex. $4 to add jalapeño and $4 to add bacon to a burger- insane). The food was not great. I got the Big Sky (grilled chicken sandwich with bacon) and it was dry/overcooked. Asked for it with the ranch on the side (I don't like ranch) and it was put on it and on the side. Sweet potato fries were all stuck together and just not great. Overall, maybe we caught them on a bad day, but it was the worst stop we had on our trip. We got food, we ate, it did the truck, but it was over priced and just meh.

Loved the atmosphere at Old Saloon. Established in 1902, it has that nostalgic, old Montana feel that makes you want to stay awhile. The historic western atmosphere really adds to the experience, and you can feel the history when you walk in. Great whiskey selection, attentive bartenders, and just an overall cool place to stop, grab a drink, and soak in the vibe. Definitely worth a visit if you're passing through Paradise Valley or heading to Yellowstone.

This place was in the tiny down of Emigrant. The food was outstanding. The place was clean and chairs are comfortable (no sides). The service was lacking but they were very busy so I didn't knock off a star. They got our order wrong, didn't refill water jug unless we asked and never brought extra napkins. Our waitress wasn't standing around, just didn't prioritize us. Like I said, it was busy. The food was amazing and people were loud and happy. I would eat here again.

This was a BIG disappointment. I should have guessed as I had to call 3 x & send 2 emails to try to get a reservation for my large party (16). The menu was changed from the one online and no longer featured fish & chips, bean burger or others. We had 2 meat-free diners who had boring green salad & fries. Two Drinks never arrived, the water wasn't refilled. Food arrived in piecemeal. All fries & nachos were ice cold. Fried chicken sandwich was over cooked & dry. Burgers were decent. And was caprice salad. The website advertised a band but we were told there wasn't one tonight. Don't waste your time or money.

Ok....stopped in with friends from out of town for lunch after the hot springs. I had a craving for a burger and a beer. The second I walked in I saw that they had Octoberfest on tap, and right away I knew I was going to like this place. We all ordered drinks and food. The waitresses was crazy short staffed. It was just her and a bartender. That would explain the wait times. It took a while for us to get our food order in but once we got it everyone was happy with their meal. I got the burger and it was really good. There was supposed to be mushrooms on it but I never saw or tasted them. Still really good though. I had a bite of Kim's Ruben and it was awesome. If we're in the neighborhood....we'll be back.

Surprisingly good food here. Some of the best chicken fried steak that I have ever had and it is hard to compete with the South. The elk meatloaf was also good. My biggest complaint was the inattentive staff. They need to pay attention to their customers and understand the menu better when a new customer ask questions about the menu. It is also a pet peeve of mine when they don't pay attention to the food sitting under the heating lamps. I noticed several peoples food sitting as the servers were not paying attention. This is probably why the meatloaf was not served that hot and more luke warm. read more

Yeah it's a great bar if you're looking for awful cocktails, shitty beer selection and a group of swine shouting, "white lives matter" out in front of the establishment. I ordered an old fashioned, and what I got was a SLICE of orange and FIVE cherries muddled in some whiskey with no bitters. I literally had to stop this dude from pouring cherry juice into my drink. So, I guess if you drink whiskey like a child this place is awesome. okay, looks like this dude decided to write me a poorly thought out response, to which I will now respond to each of his points. Point 1: Your bar tender was irritated that they had to make a cocktail, instead of just pouring whiskey shots, because that's how whiskey "should be enjoyed". --Sorry, I haven't taken a shot since highschool, and if you like shooting good bourbon, this is the bar for you. Also get less shitty bartenders. Point 2: An "old fashioned" is somehow both a fancy California cocktail AND a cocktail that has been made since prohibition. Actually both are false. It isn't from California and it's nearly 200 years old. No, obviously I don't remember how it was made after prohibition because I'm not over a hundred years old, you moron. Point 3: No, an old fashioned has never been made with fruit juice. If you like your old fashioned made with fruit juice, again this is the bar for you. Point 4: I should be grateful that this bar was open at all as opposed to California where thousands are dying from a virus and can't be opened. Um, no. This bar, and apparently it's management are awful, I'll just continue to drink at home rather than be subjected to their shitty drinks and racist patrons. Rather than addressing the issues this manager decided to defend his bar's clear deficiencies and attack me based on where I'm from. Good move asshole. read more

Me and my husband had been on a 9 day motorcycle trip through Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and Canada and this was our last stop on the trip before heading home. We rented a small little place about a quarter of a mile from the Old Saloon. We walked there and sat in the bar area and had some refreshing drinks. Great server and great atmosphere. We knew when we walked in we would enjoy this place! After some adult beverages and just enjoying the place we decided to order dinner. I can't say this enough to anyone reading this... This was by far the BEST dinner we have had our whole trip. I ordered the Elk Meatloaf and my husband ordered the Ribeye. You start with the most flavorful salad that I ate every bite of. The meatloaf is so wonderful tasting with just the right amount of herbs and the gravy over it was so tasty! My husband reluctantly shared his plate as I shared mine and he enjoyed his Ribeye so much. Great flavors and cooked perfectly! Don't forget to finish the meal with the cheesecake with huckleberry sauce on it! Heaven in my mouth is probably the best explanation of that wonderful dessert! Great beer selection and GREAT service wanted me to give it 10 stars but unfortunately can't! We will be back when the entrance to Yellowstone reopens! read more

The food and service here was just top notch. The staff was very kind and accommodated our dietary requests graciously. The steak and cream soup was just out of this world. We came back the next day for the Forager's pie, it was that good. Definitely a must-do if you are in the Livingston-Gardiner region. read more

Good food and the service (1:15 pm) was great! I got my food in about 10-15 minutes of ordering. About 6 good local beers on tap and the chicken fried steak and eggs was delicious! Just walk in and sit down then they will come help you. One 6ft pool table inside. read more

The bar is VERY cool, but the food is not.! We went in with about 18 people at the end of the night so i can understand some issues, & for the most part it was edible, but one guy who got the steak, woke up sweating, & hurling.. basically bed ridden for the next day or so. Enjoy the bar, but eat peanuts or something. ;) read more

Love the old saloon, first time back in a year or two and was not disappointed. Took my father visiting for his 60th bday for food and drinks. Burgers were great (1/2lb patties loaded with bacon) and probably the best wings I've had in Montana yet. Personally a big fan of onion rings and theirs were just what I needed. The live music on the stage was an awesome setting. Highly recommend it to anyone whether in the area or for a night out. read more

Maybe I just have had bad luck, but both times I have tried to have dinner at this place, they were CLOSED for dinner. The most recent time, I had made reservations for a special occasion (they even had my cell number). the reservation was made two days prior to the event. They said they were sorry but they were now CLOSED for dinner on one of the nights I had reservations. WHY DIDN'T' THEY CALL ME!!! The Montana Rib & Chop House in Livingston, was kind to fit us into there already busy evening. read more

My husband and I planned a trip to Yellowstone months ago and of course were curious to know what food establishments we should stop at on our trip. When we got to the northern part of the park, we decided to go to Emigrant, Montana to the Old Saloon restaurant, that is 117 years old. It was so cute and authentically crafted to give you an all out old west experience. We were halfway expecting the food to be okay and for this joint to be more touristy, but were very surprised when our plates hit the table. The ribeye steak was delicious, seasoned perfectly. The chicken fried steak was "Grandma worthy" and they even had sweet tea for us Georgia Southerners!! The service was incredible and the prices were fantastic. We had a great time, took lots of pictures and were very pleased with our overall experience. We loved the historical value to the restaurant and left with full tummies. Our family ate for less than $80. We had leftover boxes when we left. You have got to check this place out and know that you're going to get your money's worth and be super satisfied with anything on the menu. We will recommend this on our travel notes to friends and family coming out this way. read more

We visited during our trip to Yellowstone and this was by far our favorite restaurant. We weren't looking for a super fancy place, nor were we wanting a standard burger, which most Montana places seem to specialize in. This place was perfect. The staff was friendly and attentive, food came out quickly and it was delicious! The side salad with homemade huckleberry vinaigrette was superb and the Mac and cheese was very tasty! We also order the wings and chicken sliders were surprisingly perfect as well! Simple food, but elevated just enough to make it remarkable. Again, prices were perfect considering the area! We didn't get to see any live music, but the stage set up seems like it would be a good time! read more

This place was absolutely amazing. Excellent food and awesome staff and owner. We was leaving Yellowstone and stopped because prices in Gardner was too high. I love the old feel to the place and it had a lot of history dating back to the early 1900's. Then a couple weeks later we ran in to a guy in Bozeman that knew the owner. Great experience. I must say, the old saloon in emigrant, MT has the absolute best burgers I've ever tasted in my life. A strong statement but as true as the sky is blue. History

Established in 1902.

The Old Saloon first opened in 1902 to service the rail line passing through the Paradise Valley en route to Yellowstone National Park. Emigrant, MT was the halfway point on the journey from Livingston to Yellowstone and with the depot located directly in front of the Old Saloon, it became a perfect pit stop for the wary traveller. The Saloon burned down and was quickly rebuilt in 1907 by Abe Armstong. The back bar is the original bar Abe purchased in St. Louis and had hauled by steamboat up the Missouri. That original bar still serves its original purpose over 100 years later.

A full ten minutes later nobody acknowledged us. They swept floors, talked with "locals" and did everything to ignore us. We finally sat at a table and waited for another 20 minutes without a drink order or anything. A lady in the bar told the waitress that we had been there for a while and should be waited on and the girl said I get to them when I'm ready and then proceeded to talk and bs with her friends. Mind you we had our 14 year old daughter with us who was starving. 45 minutes into this half empty b establishment the "busy" waitress told us they were out of steak. We wound up getting up and leaving as well as a few other parties that were waiting qand going a couple miles away to a much friendlier saloon where they were very friendly and had good service. Never coming back. This place doesn't have the backbone to do anything when a group of entitled men started playing pool on OUR money that we put in the table after winning against the last guys and waiting our turn. Some of the regulars told us that the men who took our table own a lot of land and which is why they get special treatment, they even said the same men got in a bar fight last weekend! Yet we get kicked out for standing up for ourselves??? Shame we were going to come back and eat at the restaurant, not anymore. read more

I posted after eating here 7 years ago and every year since. Ate there tonight and although the service was great, the wedge salad came out, barely any dressing on it and a few scraps of bacon. Ordered a Bacon Blue cheese burger, barely any blue cheese, burgers were cooked like pucks, there were was no lettuce, tomato, or onions on the plate. Originally booked as a single night, post-Yellowstone reprieve (I mean, looking at hot springs all day long makes you want to soak in one, right?!), we ended up extending our stay another day, because of how much we all (my wife and I, plus our two toddler tons) loved this place! The hot springs alone is worth the price of admission: two pools, one smaller and warmer, the other larger and cooler (but still warm enough that there is no temperature shock when shifting between them), with a poolside bar window where you can order cocktails from the attached saloon...that's pretty hard to beat! There's also an attached restaurant, but we didn't get a chance to check it out, as it was closed by the time we returned to the hotel both nights. There's also the aforementioned saloon, which is open until 11-ish every night (basically, until everyone staggers out), with a wonderful, conversational bartender, Kelby, who was warm, welcoming and engaging: a true gem in an already glittering establishment. He also pointed out their absolutely ABSURD wine selection, indicating the presence of a fabulously stocked wine vault somewhere on site, for those with expensive tastes (not me; I'll stick to my whiskey!). Rooms are rustic, but comfortable, including the beds. We stayed our first night in a private cabin up on the hill, with two small bedrooms (queen beds in each) and a bathroom. Our second night, all the cabins were filled, so we ended up in a room in the main lodge, on the second floor, which had its own aesthetic perks, as the whole building feels like an inn from a previous century (which, technically, I guess it is...but it feels even older than that, in all the good ways). It's probably also haunted. We hope it is, anyway! Beyond all these incredible features I've mentioned, there's actually many, many more: an on-site gift shop / café, open from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM every day; there's a day spa up on the hill; you can book horseback rides from the stable near the gift shop; there's a playground for the littles behind the private garden, which appears to be tended by the James Beard award-winning chefs that make the fantastic dining hall an excellent choice for either breakfast/brunch (a buffet at $22/person, and absolutely worth it), or a truly incredible fine dining service in the evening. All those things, and I'm sure I'm probably forgetting or overlooked something. In short, Chico Hot Springs has something for everyone, young or old, rustic or extravagant: our little sons LOVED the hot springs (as did we, of course), but there's so much more to love here, that it has made a lasting impression on us all. Montana has never had much of a draw for city-slickers like my wife and I, but after our stay here, our ignorance has been thoroughly rectified. VERY recommended.
