I never knew I would dine in what used to be a gas station. Nevertheless, we didn't want to drive around this small town looking for food so we settled here. The staff was very welcoming and, actually, our waitress thanked us for coming, as she stated it was so slow that evening. I can't recall the last time being thanked for coming to a restaurant while entering. The service was really good, not sure if it was because business was slow or not, but we certainly appreciated the great service. I wish I could say the same for the food. I ordered clam chowder, as an appetizer, and it was decent. For my main entree, I order the New York Steak and this steak was so dry, I became tired from chewing. For that reason, I passed on dessert because I was too tired from chewing on that dry steak. Overall, this restaurant is small but has a comfortable and, somewhat, homey feel. Though we didn't experience any thrilling culinary creations, we appreciated the service. Also, I like the mirror in the restroom, simply because it's a huge wall mirror that makes you look totally different. It's one of those "you have to be there to understand" situations. read more

Tonight before going to dinner at the Old Stone Station in Cambria we checked reviews on Yelp. Many reviews were mixed and a few said what poor service they received. So we were apprensive at first but decided to judge for ourselves. We we're greeted by a beautiful young lady by the name of Dakota who seated us upstairs. Dakota was very personable and helpful. She placed our order quickly, refilled our drinks and was perfectly attentive. When we finished our dinner she gave recommendations for desert. We asked to get desert to go and Dakota brought us forks and napkins to go without being asked. Overall the food was average, the ambiance great but the service was fantastic! read more

Wide range of reviews on this place. The locals told us this was the best place in town. We saw the sign outside that said all you can eat crab and my wife loves crab. We came by at 7pm and were promptly seated. They took our drink order. It took them a little while to bring us our bread. I don't rate many places. But I had to for the possible good of Cambria and maybe this place. THIS PLACE NEEDS A SERIOUS OWNERSHIP OR MANAGEMENT UPGRADE. This was a 3 strikes you're out experience: 1. We were seated by the hostess and did not see a waiter for quite a while (the place had maybe 10 people in the back patio at the time). We saw what appeared to be 2 waitresses scrambling back and forth (not carrying food or drinks) and someone who looked like an owner/manager, but they didn't pay us any attention. Finally, a young man who was not dressed like a waiter came to take our order. I asked his recommendation, he said had never eaten anything off the dinner menu before and had only had sandwiches from there. WHAT? He then went to go get us waters. 2. He came back and we asked, what is the Fish of the Day..he said "hold on, I need to go ask"...WHAT? 3. He came back and told us the fish.. I then asked him a very simple question about the 5 wines they had on their menu..I repeat it was only 5 wines by the glass and 2 of them were White. "Which of these 2 white wines on here are good?" ...his reply..."Hold on, I need to go ask". And then he disappeared for what felt like forever.. so we got up and LEFT. For those who still care to read this I will add this about the decor: This place wants to be nice, and honestly it has that potential..but we were taken to the back outdoor dinning patio which had more then half of it's string lights burnt out, and the soccer game is playing on the TV with no volume and NO ONE is watching it. Steaks are char grilled to perfection here and regardless of the size of the side salad - they dont skimp on the size of thier slabs. No sireee. It was a great surprise and treat to eat here - two entrees - will only set you back about $45 - great deal for some fresh AWESOME food - cooked just the way you want. Everything served was natural and fresh. Go, eat, smile! I can't wait to go back! Side note: family with twins toddlers were up on 2nd floor loft - THROWING FOOD AND SILVERWARE DOWN! We stopped in here on our way back from Hearst Castle- thanks to Yelp! The fish of the day was salmon and Hubs and I both couldn't resist. We both had it blackened and I went with the salad version and he did the sandwich. Both were equally delicious! The salmon was cooked perfectly. My only complaint would be the canned olives a-plenty on my salad. Next time I'd say to just leave those off completely since they add nothing and are gross. In desperation I dipped some pieces in ranch dressing others in cholula hot sauce, I was determined to fix it, but never did. It left me scratching my head, how can it look so good and lack so much flavor?? In retrospect I guess I could of returned the dish, but I never really do that and I'm also afraid of the unknown retaliation on the next plate they send out, so I rather just see if I can fix it, but I wasn't able to. Here is the most important question of all. Would I ever go back? Absolutely.. Why? Because we all have "off" days where our performance in what we do is not it's absolutely best. Overall I was not impressed. 2.5 stars because I feel generous. But what should I expect from a restaurant that used to be an old gas station? The food itself was actually pretty decent, although I was expecting more of a variety of fresh fish (salmon and halibut were the choices). But you can get it with lemon butter, blackened, cajun style, etc., which kind of lets you have a little variety. But come on, for a restaurant that touts its fresh fish, there were only two varieties they could get that were fresh??? I think that the prices were a bit high for what we got. But yes, it was fresh. They did have different little local flowers at each table, which I thought was cool, and the decor was kind of rustic and charming. But that's where the positives of this place end. Service here was the worst I had on my trip. They took forever to take our order, never refilled our water, nor asked if we wanted another glass of wine (their wine list wasn't impressive), and the only reason they asked how we were doing (when we were almost finished with our meal), was because the server checked on another table. You can tell I'm not happy when I use a run-on sentence. It wasn't packed and there were enough severs. So there was no excuse, the service just killed this place for me. Would I come here again? I'm not quite sure I would, there are too many other places that seem more interesting to me. But I guess if there was a promise of better service I might bite. read more

Came here on a Sunday night after visiting Hearst Castle. We walked in and there was no host or anyone to greet us. Stood in the entryway for a minute unsure if we entered the wrong way or something until finally a lady comes out and seats us. The decor is rustic cabin and fishing style. It's pretty cool and I liked what they did with it. However, I noticed a daddy long legs spider and web on a light fixture behind our table. I was enjoying the dinner so I decided not to look too closely at the cleanliness of the building after that. It can surely use a good dusting. Our server was friendly and fairly attentive but she did disappear into the kitchen often. I chose the 12 ounce prime rib with baked potato. It was huge! Cooked well and tasty. I really enjoyed it and at around $28, it was pretty standard pricing. My girlfriend had the sirloin steak. It was good but not the greatest. Our server did tell us that if paying with a card, we need to add tip before they scan the card. Very unusual, but it was fine. It's 2016 and they should probably upgrade their card system to get with the times and make guests feel less uneasy about this. I'd return again. read more

Ate here for dinner the first night we arrived to Cambria and was very impressed with the service and food. We both got a cup of clam chowder and the fish and chips. Both tasted amazing! The tartar sauce was flavorful and had the right balance of everything. The fish had a crunchy flaky batter that did not get soggy throughout the dinner. The fish was thick and tender which flaked off as we cut each bite. We would definitely eat here again. We came here because of the recommendations from a friend. We were seated by the front entrance which was nice, but I think this restaurant as a whole was a complete disaster. First we waited for 10 minutes to get a menu, then we waited another 10 minutes for the waitress to get our order and bring us water, then we waited 45 minutes just waiting for ourwithout a notice of delay or even just a quick is everything ok or can I freshen your drinks. No waiter or waitress in site for 45 minutes. All I had ordered was fish and chips with clam chowder cup, my bf ordered the sirloin with scampi that's it. No heads up on running slow or too busy today. There was hardly anyone in the restaurant. We had enough and ask to speak to the manger which the waitress stated the manager was busy right now. My bf told the waitress we had waited for 45 minutes without any check on how the food was coming, she told my BF that they are really busy today but sorry that this happen. This cutely eclectic Norman Rockwell style restaurant has old propellers, fishing poles, and fun stuff to see and yummy food to eat. We enjoyed salmon tacos and a salmon sandwich. Absolutely amazing! The grilled salmon sandwich was perfectly flaky on a soft, fresh roll! SO soft and fresh! The salmon tacos were very lightly breaded but not in the least bit oily! Chunks of delicious and perfectly cooked salmon with a lightly spicy sauce! Absolutely scrumptious!! We travel to Cambria once or twice a year, and have dined here each and every visit. I am shocked there are not more reviews of this great establishment. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. They have decorated the interior with historic western items, even one table sits under a box suspended from the ceiling - definitely a conversation starter! The wooden floors creak when you walk, and the skinny staircase to the second floor is quaint in my opinion. Even the trip to the restroom is worthwhile - there is a fun house mirror in there! I find the food excellent and consistent. I tend to splurge and get the lobster, which is always prepared nicely. For non-seafood or meat eaters, the menu could be challenging. They have a decent wine selection, mainly focused on the local wineries from Paso Robles. The waitstaff is very friendly, and the owner is often there, and willing to share his stories of how he acquired the fantastic antiques. We decided to stop by Old Stone Station for dinner and they were packed indoors so they opened up some tables outside. This was nice of them. I don't want to be scathing but our waitress had no idea about the menu. The appetizer we had was good. It was the scallops with dynamite sauce on japanese rice. Thinking this was the level of cuisine to expect I got their fish special of salmon with teriyaki glaze.... it was simple a huge serving of salmon with bottled teriyaki sauce poured generously all over it the salmon. It wasn't anything to write home about for a $28 dollar dish. It was one of those moments I just was really underwhelmed when I had incredibly prepared duck breast at Robin's Restaurant for $24. The beer selection was pretty boring as well, so in the end we all agreed it was underwhelming food with overwhelming prices. Don't get me wrong, the service was good, the atmosphere nice. They have some good things going for them but the food needs some thought and improvement for nearly $30 a plate for their specials. The restaurant itself is relatively small. Downstairs it appears to hold approximately 45 people and upstairs it holds approximately 30 people. The food was good and hearty. We had zucchini sticks which were excellent. I had the pork tenderloin which was tender but slightly overcooked. However, the pricing was excellent. The vegetables were slightly over-seasoned. The prices of wine was very reasonable. For example, one bottle of Pinot Noir only cost $26. The service was friendly but it appeared that the waitstaff was overworked. In all, our dinner took us approximately 2 hours from the time that we were seated to the time that we left. But given the fact that all of the sidewalks roll up and all of the shops and restaurants close very early in Cambria, it wasn't a bad thing to have a slow meal. read more

We were glad that they provide outdoor dining. We went to have dinner based on other reviews we had seen on yelp & we decided to go for it. Unfortunately it was not the best decision for us. My husband had the Fish and Chips, he stated that they didn't seem as good as other places and were too perfectly square (I don't know what that means...I'm not a seafood eater ‍). I ordered their Chicken Piccata, I'm usually a fan of lemon flavoring sauce over chicken. Yet the chicken was too breaded for my tasting and the sauce was bland. Also I'm not sure if due to Covid-19 the restaurant was short on service but once we received our food we never saw our waiter again, on the other hand other tables were still being waited on . I understand it's an adjustment for all of us but I always do hope at the very least our food is yummy. Comfy seats with view of sunset over shops across the street. My wife had delicious spicy sushi stack. Next time she will ask for spices on the side. I had fresh fish dinner with potatoes, salad, and veggies. Veg were sauteed instead of being boiled. Salad was nothing special. Everything else was excellent. Bread was low quality but sufficient. After looking over the menu at Madeleines and Moonstone Beach Bar & Grill, my wife and I decided on this place for a dinner. It's hard to believe some of the reviews I've read on this place, because we had the absolute perfect dinner and evening. It was a Saturday and we arrived early dinner, about 6ish. The place looked as if it had just opened as there were no other patrons and we were promptly seated. (P.S. - If you're seated by a young gentleman, DO NOT ask him about any menu questions or attempt to order beverages through him. He will be quick to let you know that he is a host and the waitress is the one that will handle those matters. My wife and I briefly laughed about this after he told us, and after we overheard him tell two more couples who attempted to order drinks through him. This is one thing that I found rather odd about this place, but no big deal) We were given fresh and warm bread, very good. I ordered an iced tea, my wife went with a glass of the house wine. Usually iced tea tastes the same everywhere, but even the iced tea was good, very good flavor. YOU HAVE TO TRY THE HOUSE WINE! I love beer and rarely drink wine, but wow! The house wine is the best! Very smooth and refreshing. Shortly after being seated, our waitress took our order and shared the special: "A swordfish medallion with a mango pico de gallo salsa, and choice of soup or salad, and side." I went with the special, and my wife ordered the Filet Mignon. I also ordered the breaded calamari appetizer. The calamari was amazing! Perfect appetizer portion size, very tasty! It probably took about 30 min. Or so for us to get our meal, which seemed appropriate to me. While we were waiting we enjoyed the stream of 80's Classic Rock music in the background :). I opted for the soup, my wife got the salad. The clam chowder was so good, nice size, chunks of potatoes and clam, and left me wanting more, simply delicious! I also appreciated how the soup was hot, my experience with soup in the past is that it always comes out at warm temperature at best, but it was steaming. My wife commented on how good the balsamic vinaigrette dressing was. I love seafood but had never had swordfish, it was amazing! Very juicy and tender, perfectly cooked. The mango pico de gallo salsa was a great touch, fresh green beans, and a perfect cooked baked potato. My wife was equally happy with her entree, I tried the filet mignon and it was tender and juicy, very good. The place quickly filled up as the night progressed, but the staff responded well, and did a good job being attentive to our drinks and clearing our table. It may have taken a bit longer to be served than some people might like, but the food was excellent, and was hot and fresh, how can you complain with that? The staff was very friendly and polite. If you don't stop in here and eat dinner here while you're in Cambria, you're only cheating yourself! My wife and I couldn't have been happier with our anniversary dinner than our visit at Old Stone Station! Hats off to the chef and staff!
