Visited Ogunquit after Thanksgiving with my partner and friend visiting from Colorado. After a day full of shopping, we were unsure where to have dinner and options were limited due to post season closures. The Old Village Inn was a perfect choice. We did not have reservations, but a table was open and we were seated right away. We started our meal with bacon wrapped scallops, lobster bisque and clam chowder. All were good. Chowder and bisque were creamy. For dinner, we ordered Lobster Florentine, Braised Short-ribs and stuffed Haddock. The lobster dish was nicely seasoned with chunks of lobster meat. Ribs were tender and juicy with potatoes and carrots, it was more like a pot roast. Stuffed haddock was smothered in a tasty lobster sauce that seemed to be a reduction of the lobster bisque. Our waitperson "Walker" was friendly and attentive, atmosphere was warm, comfortable, and elegant yet casual. read more

Reservations are urged. Service is impeccable, friendly and competent. This is a venue to relax and have some wine, and take some time to dine on well crafted, prepared and presented dishes. Like some reviewers, I have been coming to Ogunquit for over 30 years and never stopped by. Big mistake. Some of the finest dinners we have had in Ogunquit or elsewhere. The beef tournedos wife had were delicious and my baked, stuffed lobster was classic Maine cooking. Prices were fair and complimented by a very well thought out, diverse wine list with several unusual wines at good prices. Don't get turned off by some of the wait staff who don't understand the difference between sweet and dry wines or what wine to choose. Surrounded by lobster restaurants that gouge your wallet, it was great to have a well cooked, fairly priced meal that would appeal to anyone. read more

Very, very disappointed with this business. We expected so much more based off of the prices and a quick little tour we did the day before. The menus were in a leather binder that were held together by packing tape. The staff didn't wear uniforms and that was ok, but our server looked like he bought his cloths from the salvation army. They served plastic souffle cups with $40 entress. Really? REALLY?? Our server never returned to our table after delivering the food. We finally saw him after we had finished and it was to late. The food was good but not great especially for the price points.... I think I'll stop here.... read more

Have had great meals here previously. Husband says wine choices and prices are excellent. Well last night very disappointed. Four of us were going for the prime rib which is very good...only to find out it was not available. So two ordered the short rib special, one duck dinner and one stuffed haddock. Nice waiter came back to say they were already out of the short rib special.....it was 6 PM! One beef eater was down to the third and last choice..the expensive filet. 3 meals came with the veggies of the day..broccolini... so cold and tasteless the room temp butter wouldn't melt on it. Inedible. The accompanying carrots were two mini carrots ....white, hard and cold. My stuffed haddock was barely heated trough, duck was also cold, undercooked and fatty. The last of the short ribs dinner almost resembled a soup. Like I said...very disappointed. read more

Not sure what happened between June and September! We finally went to dinner at OVI in June and we were impressed enough to go a second rime before left. Last week we were expecting another great experience but we were left scratching our heads. They must have changed cooks or may be experienving the same labor shortage that's afflicting many restaurants. Whatever the reason, the food was not good unless you like dry stuffed haddock that you could hear when I tapped it with my fork, runny chicken piccata (with hardly any pasta). and dry, uncooked, and virtually crab-free crab cakes. We were never asked if our meals were OK or if we needed anything else. Let's just say that the service was as lacking as the quality of the food. We will try OVI again in the hopes that this was a fluke. Please, fix this! read more

The Inn is still one of my favorite spots in town! Went twice during a week long vacation and every single bite of food was delicious. On our first visit I got the twin lobsters (amazing as usual!) and on the second visit I got the rack of lamb - SO GOOD. We always eat here when in the area. It was the best dinner yet. The bacon wrapped scallops with maple glaze were done perfectly. My wife had the French onion soup which she said was very good. She had the lobster special and it was also done perfectly. I had the steak au poivre with wild grains and fresh veggies. All were delicious. Service by Bobby was spot on, he's the best. read more

Nothing worse than a restaurant / pub serving old, tired french fries at 5pm. (Especially, when the restaurant opens at 4pm). Service was professional, but understaffed. The Old Village Inn looks like the quintessential New England Inn, which admittedly looks a little out of place among the more nautical-themed, colorful establishments. The pub opens at 4:00 pm. We went on a Sunday night around 9:00 pm for after-dinner drinks. The inside of the hotel looks like a ski-lodge met Louisa May Alcott's house, super intimate with welcoming vibes. We were immediately greeted and directed toward the pub. The bar was almost full when we arrived, whom, I speculate were mainly locals. The bartender on shift made a genuine effort to spark engaging conversations with those sitting at the bar. My boyfriend and I learned that he had been bartending for over 30 years - wow! Needless to say his skills spoke for themselves!! After round one, I asked him, "make me something just as sweet, if not sweeter, and half the size". He didn't even hesitate! The drink was delicious!! I still don't know what was in my drink that night. My boyfriend described a drink to which the bartender exclaims, "Washington Apple!!"- brilliant. I must have ordered a drink and a-half for only $18. By far one of the best bartenders I've ever had. I tipped that gentleman extra. In addition to the charismatic bartender, take a look around you - the walls, the ceilings. There are police patches and running bibs adorning the walls - a fabulous, unique and homey touch. 2 hours in this little bar flew by in good company. We returned to the OVI this past New Year's Eve to dine and celebrate. This place changed things up and went with most other restaurants do on NYE- jack up the prices and have a limited menu. We did not have a reservation- but we got in fine- we were seated on the front porch overlooking the street, which was fine it was warm enough. We ordered the mussels to start. A small portion and very small in size (I noted this 5 years ago in my last review). They were flavorful but were hardly anything. Thank God for bread. Entrees were beef wellington- the classic. It was just ok needed seasoning and had to add salt. Side veg was overcooked. Service was spotty and the entire meal was underwhelming. Maybe I will return again in another 5 years. read more

Atmosphere is superb, felt like we were in the dining room of a well kept historical home. Bar scene seemed lively...but not so loud as to be bothersome to others or diners. We had an excellent dining experience here. Felt warmly welcomed upon arrival. The table was perfect. I requested a window table and I was not disappointed. It was a perfect spot. Good wine choices. App for me was shrimp cocktail, was okay. For him a Caesar salad with salmon. It was really good; nice grill marks on the delicious salmon, croutons and dressing were yum. He got filet mignon. It was very good. Sides were cooked just right. I got their twist on Chicken Marsala. I wasn't sure if I'd like it but it sounded interesting. Loved it! The quinoa and the green beans were deelish! Rooms were dirty. Holes in the sheets and bedspread. Black ants crawling on the tv stand, bed and chair. Manager did nothing when I complained and asked to have room sprayed. Bathroom floor was dirty. Wallpaper torn in all rooms and carpet and floors were sticky. Light fixtures were old, outdated and many broken. Was not offered any sort of discount nor even an apology. Arrived as the diningroom opened. Greeted immediately and escorted to a table. Waiter was attentive. My daughter ordered Chicken Paccata and myself the Encrusted Pistachio Lamb. When my daughter cut into her Chicken it was raw and I immediately told her not to eat it. Called for the waiter who didn't apologize, and lets face it he didn't cook it. She asked for a new order. My Lamb was served on a very hot plate, but the lamb was cold/room temp and my baked potato couldnt' even melt butter. Second plate of chicken paccata was brought out and chicken still wasn't cooked. How hard is it to cook chicken? Called for the waiter and asked that they take the meal off the bill as this order still wasn't cooked. No apology. I did tip as if we had a full course meal even though we sent the chicken back twice. Afterall, it wasn't the waiters fault. I will never return to this restaurant again. My daugher picked up a sandwich from the town food store on Main Street that they make as you wait. She said it was very good. read more

Ordered the baked haddock and when the waiter asked how was everything. I told him honestly the fish wasn't very good. Not flakey and tastes fishy. He started to become combative and argued with me that it was fresh daily. I never saiid it wasn't, but when I explained it might not have been cooked correctly, he started muttering that now he has to tell the chef he can't cook. They did offer me a replacement meal, but honestly at this point and with his attitude I'd lost my appetite. I live in the coast near Boston and am no stranger to sea food, and this wasn't very good fish. Was never offered desert or anything else to make up for it. I expected so much more. We were seated in a non descript room. Christmas ornaments still on the lighting fixture. Our server was nothing short of miserable. Everything took just a bit too long. And she seemed mad at us. The food is good, but basic good. Nothing special. My $32 filet was seriously over cooked. Others in my party were satisfied but on an ordinary level. My mother and I randomly stopped in here yesterday to look at the menu. We were pleasantly surprised how inexpensive some of the specials were so we made reservations for later that night. They had special wines and I had a glass of Gruner ($6 a glass), my mother and I split a house salad and the server had it divided on two plates for us. The salad dressing was delicious and homemade. My mother had the baked haddock special ($16) and it was served with a baked potato and vegetables. I got a lobster special ($27), tons of fresh lobster served with mushrooms and spinach tossed over angel hair pasta in a light cream sauce with freshly grated parmesan cheese. We finished with a delicious salted caramel cheesecake and tea. Our waiter "Walker" was excellent. He was very personable and made good suggestions. The host (might have been the owner? was very nice as well). I loved the ambiance here. Definitely worth going. You won't be disappointed. read more

Our server was a slender man with curly brown hair and brown eyes. His demeanour was atrocious. I don't want him to lose his job, but he really must be given some lesson on how to meet, greet and serve the public. His behaviourand the things he said to us (an older couple) were beyond inappropriate. He was patronizing and demeaning. Chastised us for moving table as partners legs would not fit without our moving our table and my chair, which would have resulted in intertwined chairs with the only other patrons with whom we were placed almost on top of by the hostess. It was obvious that he and the staff were having a really bad day, as we were also turned away from the bar area, which had many open tables. Manager told us too many people and only one bartender (business musts be good). We did have a reservation. Waiter was argumentative and needs to learn the meaning of respect, customers must be treated with such and not indignation. Sadly we didn't stay to eat even though when partner went to explain situation to manager/owner, he suddenly had a table in bar and offered shots. All in all really disappointed since I'd read many reviews and being off season with a reservation, thought it would be a nice evening out for fish and chips! we had pizza instead back in our hotel room :(. if you go, be aware.... there are rules to follow and if you don't, you may end up at the corner eating pizza too! read more

So my four stars is based on the friendly staff and the cool feeling/vibe the bar has but as far as the food I've only tried a few things and I wasn't really sold on it yet. I got the lobster bisque which being coastal Maine I expected it to be really good I ordered a bowl which is more like a cup in a shallow bowl it wasn't very much at all and there was only two tiny pieces of lobster in which is a bummer also tried the scallops wrapped in bacon which was good and a friend got the clam chowder and he wasn't thrilled. I do recommend going in a checking it out I did enjoy the bar and the drinks were good I will be trying an entree next time I go! read more

This was a bad restaurant. It took forever to get drinks/bread. About 30 minutes after being seated for our waitress to come out. When she came, we asked for bread and she told us to keep waiting. Ordered a beer and it came half full and room temperature. The food was disgusting. The lobster roll was rubber. Fries were soggy and limp. Everything was super small positions. Daughters chicken fingers were tempura breaded and soggy. Along with all fried food being soggy, the oil they were frying in was obviously rancid. When I complained about the fries the waitress said "were not McDonald's". No idea how this place is still in business. read more

They cater very well to people with food allergies such as myself and there is a lot off the menu I can choose from. Our waitress, Natasha, was excellent and immediately said she was aware of my allergies from my reservation. I ordered the filet mignon and the excellent sauce and dressing were on the side a requested. Unfortunately the steak was too rare but Natasha remedied the problem right away. We arrived early for check in, thinking maybe room would be ready or we could drop our stuff off. I said "hi we are here to check in to our room" and the guy looked at me and said in a serious voice "no you're not". I thought he was kidding with how rude he was, but he wasn't. He said "I haven't even touched any of the rooms. Check in as at 3". I didn't like his tone at all so I gave him an attitude back and said "ok sometimes you can check in early so we didn't know". And then he goes "um the rooms also only hold 2 people. You should have known that when you booked on Expedia. It says it". I thought to myself-wow this is our welcome to the inn? This guy needs an attitude adjustment. I said "oh we didn't know that. It said queen bed and pull out couch" so we assumed that 3 would be okay". He said "well that's our policy and I really should not let the 3rd person in at all but I'll charge you 50 dollars extra instead". 50 dollars for what? To add an extra set of towels? He said we could put our bags in the dining room until 3 pm. I was so pissed off. The rooms are so outdated and disgusting. Peeling wallpaper. Water stains on walls. Also, one "room" is actually 2 rooms. Ironically there was more than enough room for 3 people. The room was bigger than the Marriott! Literally there was a separate room with a door and a pull out couch. And 3 people couldn't stay there? Absolutely ridiculous. The room was so dry we all woke up coughing and with stuffy noses. The guy told us that they are closed on Sunday's so just drop your key off. How weird is that? Literally there was no one at the inn on Sunday. No wonder why there is no one in their dining room eating. The people who run this are miserable. I picked this place only because of its location and price. I will walk an extra mile and pay more next time. read more

I had my family visiting from MD and they wanted a NE experience so we chose the Old Village Inn because of it's location to downtown Ogunquit. We were greeted by a very nice man (didn't get his name), but he was very friendly. Check-in and out was very quick and easy. We only stayed for one night and didn't realize the Inn was haunted until we read a few reviews. Not sure I like the "poltergeist" description since I correlate that world with evil - but both my daughter and cousin had a visit from a woman - who looked like she was dressed in a nun's habit. My daughter was wide awake when she saw the woman in the corner of the room folding clothes and my cousin was in bed almost asleep when she saw the woman standing beside her Mom's side of the bed. Just watching her sleep. The next morning we checked one of the rooms and there was an over powering smell of stale cigarette smoke that wasn't there in prior evening. That was interesting as well since you are not allowed to smoke anywhere inside the Inn - it's posted all over the place with a $100 fine. None of us are smokers anyway - so this could have been a signal we had another visitor but not a viable one. :) We couldn't find anything on the history - just that there has been some experiences with coffee makers and light switches going on and off. The Inn itself, for me, is what you would expect. An old house converted into rooms - back in the day people were smaller so the rooms are small - but once again we expected that. We loved the furnishings and some really thoughtful touches like make-up wipes and Q-tips in the bathrooms. We loved the quaintness of the Inn and would definitely stay there again. The rates they charged us were amazing in comparative to other hotels in the area. read more

The best word I can find to describe Old Village Inn's dining experience is disappointing. The food was good, (which is the only reason that I didn't give this one star,) but we were treated so poorly that I can't in good conscience recommend that anybody else suffer through it. It's obvious that this place's owner has a very cozy relationship with the area resorts because both places we stayed during our two Ogunquit visits over the last year highly recommended the Old Village Inn. Unfortunately, our experience in July of 2010 didn't come close to living up to the hype. The atmosphere is fine, but we had to wait about 15 minutes past our reservation time, something unexpected but forgivable with a great experience. The problems started with our cocktail order, mine a pomegranate martini and his a blue martini. Both drinks came to the table devoid of color or flavor. They both tasted the same, like chilled vodka. If we had wanted vodka in a fancy glass, we would have ordered that. We discretely summoned and waitress and explained the problem, and she scurried away without so much as an, "I'm sorry." Shortly thereafter the bar manager appeared table side with major attitude. He argued that martinis are supposed to taste like vodka, and he didn't see a problem with our perfectly good drinks. I should mention that I tended bar for about 10 years, and I know how to make a proper drink. I also know that you NEVER argue with a customer. This guy broke every rule in the hospitality book. He attempted a standoff, and we quietly and politely, but firmly insisted that we didn't want these drinks. He finally took them away in a huff and sent the server back to see if we wanted anything else. We ordered a raspberry vodka and soda and a glass of wine, drinks that are virtually impossible to screw up. The bartender at Old Village Inn doesn't know how to do anything but pour simple drinks. The dinner was tasty. We enjoyed Artichoke and Crab Casserole, followed by Herb-crusted Rack of Lamb and Pan Seared Scallops. We skipped dessert. Unfortunately, the horrible way we were treated by management at the Old Village Inn permanently tainted our opinion of the restaurant. We tried to keep the issue very discrete, and the bar manager turned it into a major issue. Polite guests don't deserve to be treated that way, and I'll never go back. read more
