My go-to is the pork belly sandwich and mushroom Hungarian soup. They additionally have a large variety of wines, chocolates, and fine cooking supplies. read more

I ate at OWD two weeks ago and thought "my life is better having eaten here, I should write a review" and then I didn't, like a dummy. Then today, I went there again with a buddy, and I cannot stop this avalanche of desire to write a glowing review. Last week would have been "awesome Reuben sandwich, super cool market with great local gift ideas, and a solid selection of beer and wine." I love Reuben sammies, and have been on a quest for Bhams best. This one is up there. BUT, today put me over the top for two reasons. One, I wanted to try some of the meat they cure there, and asked for some bacon. They cooked me up a side of bacon, 3 strips for $3, and actually gave me 4 strips. Like "bank error in your favor," right?! When I was ordering, I pre-ordered a breakfast sammie to go for my wife, but told them I'd swing back for it to be cooked fresh after I ate. So once I finish my meal, I head up there and they see me coming and say "are you ready for the sandwich?" Of course I say yes, and head back to my table to wait. I have barely sat down, maybe 20 seconds later, and they call my name for the sandwich. I go up to the counter, say "that's not possible" and the guy says "I saw you take your last bite of sandwich and fired it up for you." Holy smokes! Super impressive service, to go along with amazing food. Bellingham has a wealth of good restaurants, and I'm always terrified that not enough people eat out to support them all. I've had a couple of delicious sandwiches here before. There is a World Market kind of vibe, as they sell various wines and drink products in addition to the deli items. There is a diverse selection of sandwiches, and a soup/sandwich combo. I was happy to see a few vegetarian options. One of the cashier's made me uncomfortable once, which I think about frequently. He made comments about my physical characteristics. Yes, I am bi-racial, and I know he did not mean to be offensive. I just don't think it's appropriate to make comments about one's physical appearance in general. It doesn't take long to get your food, and they have a self-service water station. One of our favorite eateries in Bellingham. The first time we grabbed a sandwich and a unique bottle of wine to take home we had a vegetarian sandwich and a pork belly sandwich, Both ends of the spectrum right... Both were perfectly prepared. Our next visit my wife tried a Ruben and I was going to get the pork belly sandwich again but it wasn't on the special board, I asked when they will have that sandwich again, the cook overheard me and said, We just got some pork belly in and if you give me an extra minute ill whip that sandwich up for you....BINGO! Not only do these employees and owners go the extra mile, they do it with the great quality products us spoiled and blessed foodies come for. Nice atmosphere, lots of imported variety of specialty foods. My husband and I had a glass of house red and he had the spicy italian while I had the mozz salad. Both were very good. Good quality meat and bread was nice too. The half sandwich is super tiny, my husband had to order another half. The house red did not disappoint for being a house wine. The cheeses were good but not the sharpness I am use to with authentic imported italian cheeses.But I am not sure these were imported they might have been local which would explain the subtlety in the flavor. I don't mind the price if the serving was a little bit bigger. I am an Italian girl from New York so I know good quality Italian markets. This one is pretty good and a happy discovery. read more

Grilled cheese sandwich? That's what I want to write a review of, but there was so little cheese in the sandwich that it just hid in the crevices of the bread...bread that was completely dry. I should start with a disclosure or two: [1] The traditional "Italian sandwich" (probably originating in New England in the 1930s) is my favorite food; [2] I have an investment in finding worthy specimens of this sandwich that borders on the fetishistic. Now, I am joyfully stunned to have found one in Bellingham. After six years in Seattle, and after trying most of the unjustifiably vaunted "delis" there, I had grown bitter. (See my "Other Coast [yeah, right] Cafe" review for details.) Having only been back in Bellingham for a few days, I happened to see this storefront out of the corner of my eye while driving past. It was closed, but I stopped my car and got out to look through the window and to note their hours. I had a good feeling--a real deli case, dark woods, the right brand names stickered in the window, and there, on the chalkboard menu--the actual ingredients for an "Italian." In short: It's the real thing. Chewy, delicious bread. A pile o' salty meats--mortadella, coppa. Savory provolone. And yes--actual pepperoncinis! I didn't think PNW delis knew what those were. My only very minor complaint: the seasoning could have been supplemented by a bit (more?) oil and vinegar, as the sandwich is a tiny bit dry. But really, given how superior the main flavors are, this is not important. As others have commented, the service is friendly and relaxed, and the couple who run the place are great. I believe they're transplanted San Franciscans (?), and they've definitely brought some North Beach flavor to Bellingham. SF is one of the few places outside of Boston's North End where I've found such a quality Italian, and now I can get one just a few miles from my house here in the woods. I'm giving it a 3, instead of a 1, because I'm hoping the people working when I went in there were just having a bad day. My fiance and I decided to give this place a shot and were met with total rudeness and an attitude. The food was good, nothing special, but the portions are pretty small. For example, the two slices of sandwich were about the size of both my fists (I'm a 26 year old woman with tiny hands...I'm talking small!) I have reserved 5 star ratings for only those places that stand out as extraordinary, and the Old World Deli is certainly extraordinary. I was there for brunch on a Saturday and they were not too busy, the service was excellent, and the food was served quickly. They have a nice selection of breakfast paninis and other items, as well as an amazing menu of lunch and dinner items. Their assortment of wines, and other bottled items from fish sauce to bitters is great. I haven't seen a selection like this anywhere in Bellingham. The owners were there and they talked about how they have so many items that are home make, or prepared right there in the restaurant. From home made bacon to pastrami to fresh roasted roast beef. Old World Deli is certainly authentic and worth frequenting. ------------- I have been back since my original visit, and WOW the food they make here is amazing. The wine selection is excellent. The selection of in house smoked and cured meats is the best I have seen anywhere near Bellingham. Their Pate is awesome, which I have to admit the first time I have tried Pate, it was amazing. This is a beautiful place, the kind of place where I wish I could sit and drink wine for hours on end. The dark wood, the deli and brick. When I went in alone I was expecting it to be snobby, but it wasn't. I had never been in a deli-only place before and so I asked what would they recommend. It had high quality products and I ordered two sandwiches which were speedily delivered. About 20$ in total, pricey as I expected but worth it. I got a meatloaf panini and the Italian sub. They were fantastic. I found the Italian to be the most unusual perhaps it was because I wasn't used to the salami being dry. But it was delicious all the same. And the guy making the sandwiches told me to get out and enjoy the sunshine like I was a little whippersnapper. The atmosphere was great if a bit old fashioned. I came here and ordered the roast beef panini and honestly I was not that impressed by my sandwich. For the price of the sandwich I expected way more meat than what I got. I also thought it took a while for my food to be ready, no offense but it is just a sandwich and all the meat is already cooked beforehand, why is it taking this long. The roast beef itself was okay it wasn't anything amazing to me. The bread itself was good and I had some of the broccoli cheddar soup which was pretty good. So a friend and I decided to give Olde World Deli a try today. And I am glad we did. There was so much on the menu to chose from! The salad was wonderful: fresh greens with goat cheese, grapes and candied walnuts. And the Reuben was very good. They have a great selection of meats and can make just about any combination your little heart desires. They had a brie and apple pannini on the menu that is next on my list of things to try. My friend and I split the sandwich and salad. They split it up for us by giving us each a plate with salad and a 1/2 of a sandwich, which was nice. The staff was very friendly. This is one of the best delis I've ever been to. Quality ingredients, amazing imported goods/wines, and unique recipes really has this deli stand out amongst the crowd. Every single thing I've eaten here has been delicious and adding on ingredients is cheap ($.50) to customize any sandwich to your liking. My biggest grip? My second five star rating, and heres why. I am a big fun of supporting the smaller, local option. Assuming they're doing a good job of the service they provide. Old World Deli is unique, original and doing something I have never encountered in any other lunch spot / shop. As for the deli & grocery, they have a big selection of great meats and cheeses as well as beer & wine and cooking ingredients like DELICIOUS truffle salts and spices. If you like to get crafty in the kitchen the shelf of supplies here is worth checking out. The atmosphere has a classic "old world" vibe complete with high ceilings and a brick interior wall that really gives it the perfect feel for what it is. When eating here I have had several of the sandwiches, the meat and cheese plate, a soup, and some of the salads. Never disappointed. Word of advice! Almost every time I have gotten a sandwich I thought it looked small and was sad, but I always leave stuffed. Looks can be deceiving. Old World Deli is the type of restaurant and grocery that can only be created and achieved by years of experience and knowledge in the food world. The owner, who I have seen and overheard, but never met, strikes me as a humble and passionate with a deep love and understanding for what he does, probably the reason it is so successful. An absolute treasure to Bellingham, a favorite lunch spot and a relaxing classical place to enjoy some food and a glass of wine or craft soda. Wowed and impressed. The phrase "in house" made is taken to the max. Owners are locals who obviously put their heart into the food, service and ambiance of Old World Dei. My wino self absolutely freaked out at the incredible selection of both wine and pairings!! Roasty, dark coffee and heavenly sandwiches! Gluten free, dairy free options- I asked for a gluten/dairy free breakfast sandwich and left the details to the kitchen. Yum. Wine club, tastings and delicious wee bites. Bacon made in house. As I was passing through Bellingham and craving a good sandwich for lunch, I came across Old World Deli as being one of the best places to grab one. They had plenty of options for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike, which was wonderful. Unfortunately my garlic allergy held me back from trying the Veggie Muffuletta, the sandwich that really caught my eye, but I was pleasantly surprised with how good the Grilled Cheese was as an alternative. My boyfriend had the Roast Beef sandwich and said it was the best sandwich he's had in a long time! My only concern with this place was the way they handled my food allergy. I told the woman at the counter that I had a garlic allergy and she asked if it was life threatening, which it's not, so I said that it wasn't life threatening but still a serious allergy. She then wrote "garlic allergy - not life threatening" on the ticket which I thought was interesting. Life threatening or not, food allergies should not be downplayed in the kitchen. Anyways, we received our sandwiches and both came with a pickle spear. I opted out of eating the pickle spear because my boyfriend warned me that they were definitely fermented in garlic (which most are). I just thought it was a little weird that they would serve it to me without warning. Oh well, mistakes happen. We both still really enjoyed our sandwiches. read more

So, it took me 2 years to realize that I had posted my review of this place under Old Town Cafe instead of Old World Deli. Sorry about that! These aren't sandwiches, these are heaven on a slice of bread. I had the horseradish and roast beef on wheat, which is one of my all-time favorite sandwiches I make at home. I've never seen it on the menu in a restaurant before, so it was a pleasant surprise to find it here. It was incredible, with juicy roast beef and a creamy horseradish that was mild and flavorful. The bread was terrific too, nice and warm and fresh. Everyone in out group enjoyed their lunch immensely, I will be coming back here again. However, their paninis are also outstanding, and their pastrami is the best I've had on the west coast. Snot-nosed college kids did not make me feel welcomed and don't have the first clue about customer service. That's fine for a college town; just don't charge $11.36 for a meal. For that price I was expecting something more New York City quality. I will not be returning to this place and will recommend everyone I know avoid it.
