Extra ultra crowded and chaotic! Ahhhh! My friend and I wanted to do a tasting and couldn't figure out how it worked. Turns out, the bars are all full and you just have to wait awkwardly until a tasting concludes and you can secure your spot at the bar. The tastings are extremely cheap so I didn't feel bad tossing the flavors I didn't care for. The tasting list changes daily, which is kind of cool but also kind of stinks because I was really interested in some flavors that were in the lineup for the following day but we would no longer be visiting Gatlinburg. Some of the bartenders had very charismatic personalities and added humor to the tastings. It is really just luck of the draw on how your experience is going to go. There are two Ole Smoky's along the strip in Gatlinburg. One on each side of the street. Be sure to visit BOTH because each one has a different type of whiskey to try. The 'taster hosts' are a hoot! We had a great one at each of the two places. They make tasting a lot of fun! There is only one thing we suggested at both stores -- they offer a sampler pack of 12 small whiskeys - HOWEVER, not everyone likes the 12 selections they have packaged. Why not offer a six and 12 pack sampler and let the customer pick what they would like to have in it? I bet they would sell a lot more that way because people are more inclined to purchase something that they like rather than pay money for a package of 12 that may have several you know you would never drink. read more

Me and family had the best time at Ole Smokey! We had gotten a VIP tour through my dad's work. Tim did an amazing job explaining the history and making it interactive the entire time. After the tour, we had a tasting section where we were able to try 15 different alcohols. Tim gave a great transition into the different drinks as well as explaining the story behind the flavors. Johnny even came to visit our family which was very sweet of him. He even let us try some of his favorite drinks for the selection. My favorite were definitely the brownie and margarita. The staff were so gracious that they gave us 8 drinks on the house which we were so thankful for. Overall, we had the best experience and highly recommending anyone staying in Gatlinburg to visit here. The staff is the best of the best. read more

What a fun time! We were in town on a family vacation and wanted to do a moonshine tasting. We had so much fun! There was a band performance going in the patio type area which kept the kids entertained. For the tasting, you find a spot at the bar and skooch in. You decide which tasting you want (you can do the basic one or an upgraded one)- do the upgraded one! You get served a bunch of different tastes of moonshines which are delicious! Then you pay and wander the store where there are a ton of additional flavors. Since everything tasted great, we ended up with a pumpkin spice one, a butter pecan moonshine, and a banana pudding moonshine. We were able to get them all home safely and have been enjoying them since. Highly recommend! read more

They have some flavors that I like which are the sour watermelon and brownie flavor but nothing ends really stuck out. I went in for a tasting around 4:25 on 7/12/24 and the sampling bars were packed! Husband and friend stayed outside listening to the music while I looked for an opening at the bars to sample some of the flavors I'd not tried in the past. But I was impatient, couldn't find an opening, and joined them outside. I'll try again on another day. I understand why they charge for the samples (responsible drinking) and appreciate the credit towards purchase after the sampling (reasonable prices and SO many choices). I also appreciate the free entertainment outside their doors on their stage on a warm Friday evening away from the blistering sun. If a pour was horrible, you were stuck drinking it since no means of disposing the offender was present. Our profanity laced narration was offensive also. I tired the premium samples ($8) and was able to try a variety of moonshines. I ended up liking the pickle and watermelon moonshines the most. The bar tenders were very fun and interactive while giving out samples. At the end of the tasting they give a $5 voucher that can be used towards any purchase. Ole Smoky Mountain Moonshine Distillery Review We had such a great time at Ole Smoky that we visited twice for tastings (yes, twice--don't judge, lol). The setup is a blast: you saddle up to the bar, and a lively bartender guides your group through a lineup of moonshine samples. We went for the full 12-tasting option (you can do fewer if you prefer). Most of the flavors were strong but smooth and delicious, with a couple that burned all the way down to the pit of your stomach--moonshine doing what moonshine does best, haha! By the end, let's just say we felt absolutely no pain. Outside, there are plenty of rocking chairs set up facing a stage, where talented bluegrass musicians entertained us with classics like "Rocky Top" and some Johnny Cash favorites. The music and mountain air made the whole experience feel authentic and unforgettable. We ended up taking home six jars of moonshine and scored a free sampler pack of Java Moonshine (amazing in coffee!) plus a free cooler. The whisky tasting at Ole Smoky Moonshine was a must when we planned a trip into the area, and we have to admit it was pretty fun. Our whisky tasting bartender was funny and did a good job of entertaining everyone at his station. You do have the option of the premium or regular tastings. I believe the only difference is a premium bourbon and a 40 proof dill pickle piece? My extraordinarily beautiful partner and I did the regular tasting package, but the premium one did seem appealing. If we did it again, we would have gotten that one, as she really wanted to try the pickle. The flavored whisky shots were mostly nice, and the 40 proof mandarin orange piece was also tasty. I believe we found the watermelon whisky the best flavor as it tasted like a jolly rancher. If you're afraid that you would get buzzed afterwards; don't be, those shots are pretty small. They do give you a $5 coupon off of any whisky bottle you would like to purchase, but let's be honest. It's far more expensive here than it is in the stores. read more

There isn't enough moonshine to go around in Tennessee. I thought dinner was enough and we ended up here before heading back to our cabin to unwind. Our kids were at the arcade with family and friends while my husband and I snuck out across the street to have some Ole Smoky. It was around 9 o'clock at night and it wasn't packed. The rainy weather had a factor in it and we didn't let it stop us. I sadly did not get any pictures of the tasting shots and I do remember they were good...lol. We had a white chocolate strawberry cream, peaches, and some other ones to try. The bartender had a fun personality and she described how each one of the shots were made by the distillery. Cool place to get moonshine. You can taste samplers before you buy. It's fun to do with my boys. The servers are great. Some of the guys are extremely entertaining and fun too. The butter pecan is outstanding. Smooth as silk but, a little too sweet for me which is why I like the dark chocolate coffee better. You can keep them in your freezer. Honestly? I do like sugarland distillery's a little better though. It's even more smooth. So good! Coming back down in November. We go twice a year to either Tennessee or North Carolina. read more

Service was half-hearted. Asked for help and the person assisting didn't give me a chance to tell them what I was asking for. Before I could get out of earshot, they bragged to a co-worker "I can always tell what they are going to ask for." They couldn't tell what I was going to ask for because they didn't ask. I was looking for specific product but got sent to the tasting bar instead. Got to the tasting bar and the bartender was cranky. They were a nice person, but they acted like they really wanted to be somewhere else. The tasting was rushed and messy. There was moonshine all over the counter. There were only three others at the bar other than myself and the in the distillery was slow. There was no pride in the product, the service, or business itself. The bartender reminded us several times that "this is not Sugarlands, you can drink when you want". It was excessive. The tasting ended abruptly when the bartender just walked away from the bar. The person at the snack bar was watching movies on their phone as I walked out. The ambiance was non existent. Most of the time I was there, the staff complained about the customers and expressed their sincere interest in going home. I love buying Old Smoky from my local liquor store, but I will not go back to the tasting room. read more

There are several locations all are a little different. They offer $5 moonshine tastings. 9 flavors to try. One of the locations included moonshine pickles another offered pineapple colada both were delicious. The bartenders are funny and it's more like an interactive experience. They sell all the flavors offered plus many many more. And every kind of merchandise imaginable. We learned this after our second location they offer a stamp card. If you go to all 3 for a tasting you will receive a free hooch hopper T-shirt. You. Will also revive. A $5 off coupon at each tasting they can be used at any location. This is something fun and unique to the area to do with friends. Highly recommend trying the different flavors. What a GREAT time!!!! To be honest I come here EVERYtime i am in the City! And each time I love it!!! I don't believe I have ever ended up w the same "host" but i come pretty far out from each other. I will say there are 2 locations and i prefer the one in Gatlinburg. I believe to partake it's about $10/person; possibly less and you get 13 shots!!! Yes shots!!! You take them as a group too, which is nice. I will say if there is a flavor you're not interested in they have no issues swapping you out for something else behind the bar. You start out hardcore and when I say it you feel it going down you FEEL IT!!! Lol I don't know who is drinking that or taking it home but whew!!! It exists. We did the moonshine tasting for my sister's bachelorette over Labor Day weekend. A little bummed by how the tasting went. I specifically told the bartender I was excited to try butter pecan and it was the whole reason I came. She had me save some of the previous shot to try pumpkin pie with it but didn't let me try on own so got shorted half a shot and didn't even get to try flavor I wanted by itself cause she said couldn't re pour ... bummed still a month later lol. Just one of the several places we stopped by for some sampling. Compared to the barrelhouse where you sample their whiskies, this one you get to sample the usual different varieties of their moonshines. We stopped by at the distilleries across the street before entering the store. They sell many merchs and if you are an OCD like me, you'll definitely enjoy looking at the jars after jars neatly organized by colors on the sea of shelves. Inside the store was spacious but the amount of crowd makes the place feel really packed as you can expect. You just walk up to any bar where you see a session was finishing up and in between shifts of bartenders. It cost $5 (minus tip) which you can pay with cash or credit card, and they'll give you a stackable $5 coupon. I didn't get the name of our bartender, she was friendly but she definitely was buzzed. Her voice wasn't loud enough to compete with all the chaotic background noise from the crowd, but she tried as best as she could to be informative before each pour. Most of the customers did seem uninterested with what she was saying, they just wanted a sip of those booze lol. Comparing the moonshines between Ole Smoky's and Sugarlands' is futile cause everyone's preference is different and personal. I personally think each distillery has their wins over the other on specific flavors. I'm in the minority who doesn't like their Apple Pie because the cinnamon flavor is just way too strong. From our tasting, I remember trying out the Blackberry, Pineapple Pina Colada, Strawberry Mango Margarita (I like this one!). I also remember being reminded of a strawberry Chupa Chups when I saw their White Chocolate Strawberry Cream but turns out it didn't really taste like Chupa Chups lol. I was surprised at how much I like their Banana Pudding Cream, it was well done. Last but not least, our bartender forewarned us as well as he did before I took a sip, but alas their 128-proof of Blue Flame took me out. He bagged two jars of the Orange Shinesicle Cream and Banana Pudding Cream on our way out. Love those coupons! He was really looking forward to getting their Lemon Teashine, and despite them telling us that the Lemon Teashine and Grape are their best sellers, those two flavors are just seasonal hence not available all year round. So they way it works is you pay $5 per person, and you each get 7 tiny samples of moonshine. After that, you get those $5 back as a store credit so we had $10 off coupon. (Plus if you buy more than 3 bottles you get a free mini cooler) The tasting was around 15 mins, but be aware that it can take longer than that because I saw it get really crowded right after we were done. Some of the flavors we tried were Banana Pudding, Strawberry Crème, edible pineapple, and one that was 128 proof! WOW. We ended up getting 3 bottles (with free cooler) 2 shot glasses and a pour lid that you can just put in the jar! Our bartender was soooo funny, he made the tasting so much better. After shopping the also had a band playing outside plus you could also see the process of making the moonshine through a window. This really was a cool experience and we'd totally be back! Gatinlinburg is a cute place. It was fun walking up and down the Main Street while people watching and shopping. We decided it would be appropriate to do a whiskey tasting while we were there. So we walked into Ole Smoky. It was a very welcoming and open entrance. We walked to the back where they have several areas where they do tastings. The tasting was $5 and came with a little plastic thimble size "glass". This isn't like a high end whiskey bar. You're getting a chance to try the flavored whiskies that are used as like mixers in cocktails. The tasting started with a boozy piece of pickle. We then tried 8 or so different flavors. Our person giving us the tasting was funny. She was telling us about how she has never left the state of Tennessee and that little tidbit was aligned with my experience here. It's very small town feel and like less about good quality whiskey. Anyway, I always bring back gifts for my friends and decided I had enough room in my luggage to bring back a couple bottles of flavored whiskey. They were kinda pricey--$30 per bottle, but what the heck. I was on vacation! Price is insignificant haha. The cashier wrapped up my bottles very nicely, so I just put the whole bag in my luggage and it was completely fine.
