Ok. I started another review stating that I'm not picky. Maybe it's not true, maybe I am lying to myself... I think what it is, is that food prices are going up, but the food is subpar at best at a lot of establishments. Ok. Decor was astounding, nice, warm, and comfortable. The fries were cooked so hard I couldn't enjoy them. I checked other pictures to see if that's how they looked and they didn't look that color, or that tough. So that's a thing. I had the steak and frites which I mentioned was $$48.00. I feel like I was robbed just a bit. A gamey sliced peace of meat, with a gamey steak sauce. It was garlic.. it must have been a garlic I am not used to. I tried the signature cocktail. The menu overhyped it, so what I received for $16.00 was not what I thought I was getting in terms of size or in taste. This restaurant gets two more visits. This is probs my 3rd time dining at Olin. This time, we popped in last minute for brunch on the Sunday of NFL draft weekend. It was surprisingly empty given the location and events happening this weekend. The vibe of the restaurant is elegant, modern and casual. I ordered the paella, deviled eggs, and breakfast potatoes. My husband got the burger. Food always comes out super fast which is a plus. I really enjoyed the rice dish as usual but my egg was overcooked so I didn't get to enjoy the runny yolk. The potatoes were underwhelming and different than what I've had there in the past. They were very oily and not seasoned. I enjoyed the bite of my husbands burger along with the mimosas ($12 with $5 for a refill). They had just the right amount of cava and orange juice. I cant fully recommend this place based on what I ate because I was on a "eat light" before going where i had to go. The steak smelled awesome though. This place KNOWS though how to make a sidecar. It's my favorite drink and I always test the bartenders wherever I go if they know how to make one. The focaccia bread was very good and the cheese board was a nice light dish to have. Incredible experience at Olin. The service was amazing. The ambience was incredible and the food was innovative. There were 4 of us and we opted to order multiple dishes and do a family style meal. The star of the meal was the Braised Oxtail and Short Rib Garganelli! Flavorful and hearty. All other dishes were amazing and would 100% order again. They are very accommodating to allergies...I have a tree nut allergy and they did everything possible to make sure it was taken care of. We did have an issue with the two desserts we ordered, all nut items on the side, but the kitchen changed the recipe a bit and didn't inform our waitress. Not her fault at all...she brought out the crème brûlée for me and it was fabulous. She was very attentive and took care of us - great service from Lauren H! My partner and I recently went to Olin for a date night. He got an amber ale and I got a mezcal cocktail, both great! Then we waited about 50 minutes for our entrees, a burger and swordfish. The food was truly incredible but not at all timely. Also our bartender was quite rude to a set of patrons next to us and not super attentive. The space is beautiful. Olin is the perfect place for a romantic date night. The interior is absolutely gorgeous! The kitchen is open so you can see the dedicated team preparing your meals while you eat. The team was super nice, explained everything on the menu and provided amazing suggestions. The service was above and beyond. We started our dinner with the potatoes bravas (ordered without the anchovies) and it was absolutely delicious! The potatoes are nice and crispy and the sauce that accompanied the potatoes was so good! We also had the Michigan goat cheese with the sourdough bread. If you're just going to have a few drinks and appetizers, I highly recommend ordering both of those. For drinks we started with the Will & Grace and the American Money. We then ordered the Smoke & Mirrors and the Getaway Car. The getaway car drink was stronger than I expected. The Smoke & Mirrors perfectly balanced sweet and Smokey flavors. The Will & Grace is light and sweet and the American Money was very refreshing. The Oxtail-Short rib pasta was okay. The steak in the Steak and Frites was cooked to perfection; I especially loved the chimichurri sauce on the steak. The crème brûlée was the perfect dessert to end the dinner. Note: Olin does get busy later on in the night (we visited on a Friday night) so I might recommend booking a reservation in advance. Delicious meal! We really loved the ambiance and decor of this beautiful new spot right in the heart of downtown. Our server was great and everything we ordered was delicious, specifically the oxtail short rib pasta. Unfortunately we happen to be there on a very hot and humid summer day and the temperature inside was extremely uncomfortable. I even asked the hostess if perhaps the AC was broken but she informed me it wasn't. It really made our experience unpleasant because of how bad it was. The service was alright but the food was sub-par considering the cost, we don't mind paying for a delicious meal but we can't say that Olin fit the cost. We started with the cheese board, had old grapes that were about to be spoiled and old cherries that had started to wrinkle and the cheese were small cubes for $22, then for dinner we ordered the mahi-mahi when it came out it looked like tailpia , thin and over fried, and was tasteless. The only saving grace from the meal was the crème brûlée, which was light and the sugar caramelized top was perfect. Walked home disappointed and a little hungry. read more

I think Olin is my favorite restaurant in Detroit. Came here tonight and ordered the short rib burger and a glass of the Pinot noir. The short rib burger was the best burger I've ever had. Juicy, perfectly cooked, and a huge portion with two patties. Additionally, you get a big side of shoestring fries which were fantastic and perfectly seasoned. Glass of Pinot noir was also fantastic. Will definitely be returning here when I'm back in town (which is hopefully soon). read more

This is a 4 1/2 star review certainly. I tried Olin for the first time recently, and I was seriously impressed. Each dish they brought out was better than the last. I've been waiting a long time to have a restaurant of this caliber here in Detroit. Where everything is outstanding and delicious, not just 1/2 or 3/4 of the dishes. And the waitstaff is actually welcoming and friendly. So many of the restaurants downtown have this bizarre, disaffected hipster attitude that really turns me off the entire experience. Like somehow we are bothering them by being there. But here at Olin, it was like walking into an NYC restaurant, where the entire team from host to server to food runner is hospitable and warm. I don't know if it just comes down to starting with a good team, or it's just high expectations coupled with a high level of training. I'm sure it's a mixture of Column A and Column B. But either way, they get it right. The food is mostly small plates, with a few bigger entrees, which of course I love, as I can try a bunch of different dishes. The goat cheese with the harissa spiced vegetables was the stuff dreams are made of. And the carrot ginger soup was some of the best Ive had anywhere. And the steak frites was amazing. Everything we had was perfectly seasoned, plated, and executed. They know what they are doing here at Olin. I was honestly proud to have taken my British friend to this place for his last night in the States. He's still raving about the food, and he's been all over the world. Great weekend date night! Arancini balls were our favorite! They ooze taleggio cheese when you break into them! We ordered an extra ball so we each got 2. So glad we did! Pound cake was a little warm - nice touch. Gorgeous open concept restaurant with a great vibe. We enjoyed our visit but do have a few recommendations on how this restaurant could be 5 star. First, slow down the courses just a bit. We had 5 courses & were out in an hour. We felt rushed. This is also an opportunity to sell more alcohol. Our server came too late to ask @ a second round so when she finally did, we said no since we were so close to finishing up. Lastly, wipe the table between dinner & dessert. It wasn't great to have random food still on the table as we were getting ready for dessert. My hubby would have liked a clean plate for each course, but I was ok with how it was. I've been meaning to try out Olin for a while now, I finally got reservations for Friday night before we went to the Fillmore for a concert. The staff was great, our server, Brandi, was informative and personable. We couldn't make up our mind on what to eat, the small plates looked interesting, we also wanted to try a short rib burger, since it sounded good on the menu. I found the menu sort of limiting, I wish I had taken a photo, there could have been more mains to choose from (in my opinion). We decided to get a few small plates, a pretzel and we each got a short rib burger. We started with the pretzel ($7) which came with honey butter, it was delicious, definitely get one! Then we got the baked Michigan goat cheese with Moroccan spiced vegetables and grilled bread ($14), that was really nice. We also ordered the potato and artichoke bravas ($15), very yummy! We obviously realize at this time that we ordered too much food. Lol Our short rib burgers ($19) show up, they come with Garlic parm fries (which the menu doesn't even mention). The fries were plentiful and really yummy, the burger wasn't what I expected. It was made in the style of a smash burger. 2 thin patties smashed and browned with cheese and grilled onions, Boursin cheese (I wanted more of that, as it was the best bite when you could taste it) and dijonaise (couldn't even taste it). I was expecting one patty of beef (I like med/med-rare) I honestly didn't think it tasted any better than typical ground beef. It was good, nothing special. I wouldn't order it again, though. I'm compelled to mention something that rubbed me the wrong way, the expeditor kept scratching at her scalp, then putting the finishing touches on the plates before the servers brought them to the tables. She handled food with her bare hands, putting bread on plates, garnishing, etc... She was also on her phone, never once left to wash her hands. Had an amazing dinner here for my bday. The menu has just enough choices and covers all the bases - seafood, poultry, beef, vegetarian. I really loved the creativity of all the dishes. I thought the portion sizes were generous, we shared 2 small plates between 4 people as a starter and there was plenty for each to get more then a 'taste'. We got the Potatoes & artichokes 'bravas' with harissa & black garlic aioli and the Charred octopus / chorizo / almond romesco / confit sunchoke. Some of the best octopus I've had, very tender and not chewy. The sunchokes were very interesting. Since it was my birthday I went all out and got the mushroom soup - it was so good I wanted to lick the bowl. For my main course I ordered the Strozzapreti pasta / short rib-mushroom ragu / bay cream with pecorino. A very huge serving. The short rib meat was tender and flavorful, the sauce was a great compliment. One other had the short rib pasta, one got the short rib burger - gave it great reviews. The fourth meal was the 1/2 chicken with parsnips and parsnip sauce. The flavor was really different but of course delicious. The atmosphere is very modern and feels like you're having a special event. Super loud - but that's the high ceiling issue. Kind of had to yell to each other. Everything was delicious, except for my pasta. Unfortunately, my short rib mushroom pasta dish was cold. However, I will say, the short rib itself was pretty good! The staff was very knowledgeable and took very good care of us. We started with their house bread which was a delicious pretzel served with everything butter. We all loved it. Then we ate the chicken liver tartine. It was perfectly balanced. Even people who hate liver pate probably would've enjoyed it. We all loved it. Next came the arancini which were tender and crispy and delicious. All four of us agreed it was the best Arancini we've ever had. That followed with the charred octopus. It was a really good dish. We then shared the sole which was designed to serve two people. It was perfectly cooked and very flavorful. The last course was the paella which was very good, but not our favorite of the evening. Olin didn't drop the menu until the day before (too late to cancel without getting the $50/person fee), and it was on their IG story at that. Due to some dietary restrictions my wife and I decided to cancel as soon as we saw the menu on Fri. I couldn't get through to a human being on the phone. Sent an email on Monday...no response. Super dishonest to hide the menu until it's too late to cancel. We still gave them ~28 hrs notice. I'm also certain they filled our spot anyway, but they still charged us the $100 fee. All around 5 star experience! The atmosphere is on point; great for date night, girls night, or to drop in and have a drink at the bar. All the staff from the hostess to our waitress were pleasant and attentive and let us enjoy our time while waiting for drinks and food. THE FOOD: The arancini was divine. The perfect crisp outside full of soft tender rice and a delicious cheese sauce. I'd order again easily. My husband got the roast chicken and we both agreed it may have been the best chicken we've ever had. There was so much flavor soaked into the chicken and it was perfectly tender.
