A small, curated menu of just the greatest hits. Before Olive & June, this was El Arbol, and before that it was another restaurant whose name has been lost to the periphery of my terrible memory. I've loved the architecture here regardless of which name is on the sign. It's twisting and labyrinthian, like a miniature Winchester mystery house...but with food! Try snagging a table on the rooftop during an unseasonably warm Winter night and take in the view. Though the layout is undeniably great/weird, the food really is the star of the show here. The entirety of the food offerings barely take up one page. In fact, the wine menu is roughly double the size! A small menu like this is always a gamble...one bad dish can really sink the entire experience if there isn't anything else to pivot to. Doubly so when you menu changes with the seasons. In this case, the gamble pays off, as everything we had was a hit! We ordered most of the antipasta menu: Fritto misto (incredible shrimp!), pork meatballs (fig was a nice touch to cut the heaviness), classic caesar (straightforward salad, nothing special), and the Sicilian arancini. I ended up ordering the Radio Flyer cocktail (fine, I ordered three of them!). It was a wonderful Fall drink, really nicely balanced. One ingredient, maybe the amaro, provided it with a tiny hint of licorice on the finish. Now I typically hate licorice, but cranberry citrus, bourbon spicy/smokey, and the sweetness of the licorice all existed in beautiful balance, which was actually a theme throughout most of the dishes. I had the braised beef pappardelle, our waiter swore it was the best thing on the menu. Oddly, it was similar to the meatballs, in that the lemon served as a counterpoint. My wife ordered the bucatini, which was a masterpiece. It's basically a pasta dish with pork cheek. The issue is that the fat in the guanciale has to be rendered properly so that it provides texture, otherwise the entire thing turns into a mooshy mess. In this case, they nailed it. The tomato sauce wasn't overly sweet, they salted the water, I'll echo a few other Yelpers and mention the phenomenal happy hour here. 5-6:30 all apps and cocktails are half off. Book yourself a blue-plate-special dinner at 6PM and enjoy a healthy discount! read more

Since I'm now a regular, I think it's now an appropriate time to write a review. I've been here twice for dinner with my love and left a happy and satisfied guest both times. The waitstaff is knowledgeable and friendly, and provide great recommendations for those times when you're straddling the fence on a dinner selection or beverage pairing option. The food has also been consistent: beautifully prepared/presented, and delicious. Last night, my love and I attended the Amari Dinner. What a lovely, intimate dining experience, shared with other food and cocktail lovers! The host of the evening, Paul, did a masterful job in providing the overview for the evening, explaining the menu (food and drink pairings), and making the guests feel welcomed. It was a perfect event and I look forward to attending another soon. As for the decor, Olive & June is sophisticated, yet casual. A large tree grows directly in the center of the three-story restaurant, with stairs wrapping around it. Enchantingly lit, it is a charming place to take the hopeless romantic in your life. Personally, this restaurant now has a special place in my heart because of wonderful memories created here, so, I may be a tad biased; but, if you haven't visited yet, plan to. While the restaurant does have a good happy hour, the food is mediocre and the atmosphere bland. I had the pistachio mint pesto, blue lump crab, crab fingers, and lemon. There were 2 small crab fingers in my pasta and I could not find any lump crab meat in the dish. My husband had the pork chop and said it was just "OK" nothing special. With three different levels, each offerings its own vibe, there's something to please everybody's choice of ambiance. Unless with a larger party, personally, I prefer the 2nd floor bar that overlooks the vast outdoor courtyard and 2nd floor terrace/lounge area. All of the trees and natural lighting enhance the already chill feeling. Plus, it's just really pretty. Scene set...now onto other items of interest: the food and libations. Olive & June takes an interesting twist on Italian fare and they are in the farm to table/seasonal game. So, the menu does change fairly often. O&J is a nice place to enjoy an enjoyable, not break the bank dinner - almost all entrées are under $20 (except steak, etc. = a few bucks more); however HAPPY HOUR is one of the best deals in town. Monday through Friday from 5-6:30 they offer half off beers, cocktails, and shared plates! Talk about some $$$ savings...and the eats and drinks are quite legit to boot. Some of my memorable drink and eat highlights include the Love BJo cocktail, very refreshing and bright with fresh sage; the Roasted Eggplant Crustini (if they have it; it's was a "special"), the Triangoli is so so good (I doubt you would go wrong with any of the pasta dishes here), the Pork Meatballs are fluffy and flavorful, the Seafood Frito Misto is a blend of great flavors and textures consisted of an assortment of lightly fried seafood bits (seafood included in the dish changes depending on availability and season), and the Polenta with a soft cooked Farm Egg on top...drool...yeah, try the polenta. ;) Overall: [Again] One of the best HAPPY HOURS around for drinks AND food. Cheers! Note: O&J has a vast wine list, a decent cocktail menu, but is seriously lacking in beer choices. Just popping in for two reasons: to reaffirm that happy hour is really the only acceptable time to come here, and also to sound off a little bit about the service and one specific dish. I took my parents here- we got there precisely at 5 and were the first people seated. We ordered two glasses of wine and a Sicilian margarita. As soon as she brought it out I look at the margarita and said to my mom, that doesn't look like it looked the last time I was here. And nor did it taste like it. If there was anything other than straight like juice in there I couldn't tell. I quickly exchanged it for a wine. Later on in the night I saw another table order them and they were like 3 shades darker so I'm hoping someone spoke to the bartender. I also watched the two other tables get the bread and ricotta spread delivered immediately whereas I had to ask for ours (the beginning of a long night of lackluster service). The ricotta ball was cold and the whole thing was less flavorful than last time. We ordered the Arancini, seafood Fritto misto, crab bruschetta and pork meatballs. The meatballs were TINY and also, weirdly different sizes. I'm assuming they're hand made but come on. The sizes were all over the place. The seafood misto which I LOVED last time was horrible- we had three shrimp, a few rings of calamari and the rest was shaved pieces of zucchini and sweet potato and onion I think, most of which had been fried into a giant congealed piece. Again as soon as they put it down I looked at my mom and said "well that looks different there's no seafood!". The crab bruschetta and Arancini were good. Now yes we ordered a four apps for three people and maybe she thought we didn't need anymore food but our server literally disappeared after a quick walk up after our apps were dropped. Happy hour was down to five minutes and our drinks had long been empty before I finally flagged her down so we could order two pasta dishes- the butternut squash mezzaluna and the truffle risotto and another round. She dropped those and disappeared- someone else brought our pasta out and we were still sitting there with piles of dirty app plates, bread plates and silverware. We had to ask another server to please bring us fresh plates. The risotto was good but lord- I thought the portions were small in my previous review, well, they've shrunk more. The mezzaluna was a JOKE- I think someone literally forgot to put filling in it. See photo for evidence. So to sum this up, had it not been HH prices the meal would have been ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY DOLLARS WHICH IS A JOKE. So, go, but only for HH. The portions are too small and quality sooo inconsistent. Like Olive anD June You have the makings of a fantastic spot but LOWER YOUR PRICES or up the portions and I suggest you start stuffing your mezzaluna!! And second, our server Amanda needs to think long and hard about whether she wants to be a server. Delightful is the first word that comes to mind. We decided to try this place over the pure fact that they work with a few venues downtown that i was interested in for my wedding. The simplest way for me to put their style of food is like... americanized italian. They have different styles of a pasta, a few meats and delicious appetizers. I had ravioli stuffed with meat in a caramelized sauce with nuts sprinkled on top, it was tasty. The appetizers was an arancini and fried calamari and veggie platter. The fried dish was great. Had delicious homemade dipping sauces and the arancini had a kick to it which im not typically a fan of but if you like spice, its definitely a must have. The atmosphere is intimate and oldish/vintage. Seemed a bit run down like there hasnt been renovations in a while but they have booths so you have some privacy. I've been excited to try Olive + June for years but felt really disappointed by the entire experience. From a service perspective, it was fine. Orders are taken at once and coursed but entrees we're dropped before we were even close to finished with our appetizers. The server said modifications were welcome and dishes were made from scratch, but neither of the requested modifications were made and food had to be sent back. The food is mediocre - bread for bread service is sent out cold. The pasta presentation is beautiful but lacks flavor. There are so many other amazing Austin options to try. The only negative I have for this restaurant is the WELLNESS FEE. What and why is that on our ticket. Well, our server explained it's to pay for employees health insurance. Hhhmm, shouldn't that be the employers responsibility, if they offer health insurance. Or maybe just hide it from customers. Add it to your mediocre $57 steak for all I care. It's low class to charge that $3 fee. Yes, $3. Health ins premiums average about $70-$200 a month for a pretty good policy. This fee will exceed that so where is the remainder going? read more

My first experience with Olive and June was interesting, to say the least! It wasn't the worst but could've gone alot better. You'll spend a good amount on a tab for food that is good but not great. Pros: Homemade Ricotta was to die for, Mondays have 1/2 price by the glass wine and 1/2 priced bottles of the glass wine as well, their pasta is homemade and very fresh! Cons: We made a reservation, 4 weeks in advance, for 10 people and still waited 40 minutes to sit because of a lingering table (understandable). Our server was very sweet but the time per course was astronomically long. We wait almost an hour between a charcuterie board and shishito peppers (very good!) and 9 pasta dishes. Two of those were served cold. It was a birthday party and we just felt a bit let down overall. read more

We came back here after getting a $20 off card at Bullfight. It had been a while so we thought, why not? Our waitress was really great, but I can't remember her name. We started with Arancini which were nice. I'd get those again. The cheese plate was all very good too. I drank a Sicilian margarita (I think that was it), totally delicious! The red leaf salad was good too. So the ravioli I got was not exciting. They weren't terribly full and just not very flavorful. There was added chicken so that made it more of a meal otherwise it would have been a bit pitiful. My husband got the steak which he said was good, I tried it, it was good, not great. It kind of hurts my heart to pay $36 for a steak and have it be just good. The lemon cheesecake was really yummy. The bottom tasted like it had a little cinnamon zing in there. The sorbet trio was tasty too. The ambiance is still very nice, but we won't rush back because it's rather expensive and I wouldn't say that I loved all of it. It's a great place to enjoy with friends once in a while, we sat for about three hours gabbing and eating and drinking. read more

The pasta was so fresh, this is one of my favorite pasta spots! The parking lot is very small but there is street parking in the neighborhood. Looooved this place! It's so precious, instagrammable and very covid-safe. I went with a small group and ordered a few things. Everything was delicious! Their classic Caesar is a game changer dude. Idk what they do to it but it's not your average Caesar salad. So good and creamy and fresh Parmesan ughhhh. So yum. I had the Bucatini All'Amatriciana and it was delicious. Homemade pasta and a delicious pomodoro that was just the right amount of savory. My friends ordered the beef ravioli and the baked rigatoni and both were so delicious. I'm not a huge beef fan but the pasta on both dishes was perfectly cooked and so flavorful. I want to eat homemade pasta all the time. This place has a gorgeous freakin' 200 year old Oak tree that is a decorative centerpiece situated among the restaurant. Seriously, just pulling up the restaurant and seeing the natural wonder that the restaurant was built around was incredibly stunning and just magical. The experience and ambiance pulled you in immediately as you arrived. Just wanted to get how beautiful this place was out the way. Now, Waiter. Our guy was perfection. Funny and chill, yet informative and attentive. Really great balance so our dinner just had a great vibe the whole time. Onto food. This is really why you come. And it was damn good. Our apps were great ways to start, from a refreshing beet salad to this amazing egg/cheese dip, everything was good decision from the get-go. The pastas were all homemade and perfectly executed with innovative yet precisely thoughtful ingredients. Really couldn't go wrong picking any dish here. I really like this place. I went here when it was El Arbol. They changed the decor a little. I was excited to try this place because the chef is the dude from Parkside on 6th Street. I got there at 4:55 on a Thursday, and they asked if I had reservations-what?. There are a few tables on the first floor and a few on the second floor that are inside. The rest of the tables on the first and third floors are outside. Either way, they all seemed to be reserved, so I'd make a reservation if you think of it. When I was there, a special event was taking place on the third floor and there was live music. This may have contributed to the foodie traffic. I tried to sit inside at the bar, but there were only 6 seats, so, at 5:01 we sat outside. Here's your warning: DO NOT GO ON A HOT DAY. There are a lot of these in a Texas summer. They do have one fan per floor, but it's not like it has that lovely water mist thing. It's just hot air being blown this way and that way. The waitress was extremely knowledgelable about their exceptional cocktails, which are half off between 5:00 and 7:00, so generally $5 each. I tasted my friend's Italian Magarita, which was great. And I had the Aperol Sptriz, which I loved. I was less crazy about the Bella Milano. We split the meat and cheese plate and really liked it. Next time I'll try the meatballs. And the Sunday dinner. And the desserts. There doesn't seem to be a brunch. There are certainly lots of reasons to return this Fall, maybe in November. read more

This restaurant is within walking distance from our house. On a nice spring day, it's nice to walk through Brykerwoods neighborhood to dine here. This is one of the few places where my husband and I take our family to celebrate few memorable events: birthdays, anniversaries, getting straight As, etc. Everything we had here was good. My 11 years old son has a love affair with pasta. He had a great pasta bolognese dish here. He even ventured out and tried the pasta in squid ink, ended up liking it very much, wanting to order it again the next time we visited here (but of course menu here changed often so that same pasta was not on the menu). Olive & June has THE best happy hour deal and menu in town. Happy hour is until 6pm on Monday to Friday. It is half off the entire food menu, drink menu including all beers, cocktails, wine by the glass, and even the wine flight. On Mondays they also have half off wines by the glass all night. There really is no reason to come at other times since the HH deal is so good! I would give Olive & June 5 stars for HH and 4 stars for everything else. They also have free valet parking and are only available for dinner at these hours: Sun-Thurs: 5-9pm Fri-Sat: 5-10pm Delicious bread is served with the best soft butter spread - if you run out of bread for your butter or vice versa, ask for more since it's free of charge! Appetizers: I recommend the fritto misto (large platter of fried seafood) and beef carpaccio (my favorite!). I have also tried the crab bruschetta (you can really taste the crab, but it's a little salty), pork meatballs (flavorful, decent). Pasta primi: a good portion of pasta that will make you full and satisfied but not stuffed. I recommend the bucatini which has a more meaty, savory sauce! In general all their pastas are carefully crafted and handmade. You can expect anything you order to be of quality. Segundi: The New York strip was really good but not like mindblowing. But oh my the gulf red snapper was perfection!! Crisp on the outside and so tender on the inside with so much flavor and juiciness. TLDR; Come for Happy Hour!!! Delicious. read more

My friends and I (a group of 7) went out to eat at this restaurant for my friend's 20th birthday dinner. To put it plainly, we were EXTREMELY underwhelmed. The patio was beautiful and the scenery was gorgeous, perfect for a birthday dinner. Our server, Kolby, however did not give the service that is expected for a restaurant of this style and class. He was very standoffish and did not offer recommendations on different drinks, appetizers, entrees or anything. The entire table was made up of servers, we all know what service is supposed to look like and what interactions are supposed to be. We were barely offered a smile the entire time he was serving us and barely interacted with us other than the bare minimum through giving us water and bringing us bread. We understand that sometimes servers can be busy or stressed but there was absolutely no effort given to begin with. We observed another server interacting with tables near us and it was like day and night. We interacted with other restaurant staff such as the food runner and a man who cleared our plates and there were infinitely more pleasant through a single interaction. The food was just okay but not worth the $20+ price of entrees. As we are a group of 7, where gratuity is automatically included, I cannot help but assume no effort was given as he knew he would be tipped regardless. An additional tip was easily earned as again, we are all servers and understand the industry, but this was absolutely ridiculous especially considering it was for a special occasion. There's a huge tree in the middle with Christmas lights everywhere which make it even more romantic. Overall, it has a casual classy atmosphere! [Food and Drinks] Ricotta Ravioli - man, this is so delicious!! I love how they added roasted butternut squashes on top of the ravioli. They gave a little fruity hint to the dish. The ravioli was cheesy but not overwhelmingly cheesy. Mezzaluna - this, too, was super yummy!! But the portion size (including the ricotta ravioli) is small. Mezzaluna only had like five pieces which definitely did not fill up my boyfriend's tummy. As for our drinks, I got a glass of cabernet sauvignon, and my boyfriend got a glass of merlot. They were both pretty good. Most wines come in bottles rather than in glasses here. I came here with my boyfriend for our anniversary dinner, and we both had a wonderful time here. My family and I are visiting Texas for the first time and decided to have our trip over Thanksgiving weekend. We called Olive & June 3 weeks in advance of our trip to set a reservation for Thanksgiving dinner. Understanding many businesses are closed for the holidays, I asked the hostess on the phone multiple times whether the restaurant would be open on Thanksgiving night. She confirmed confidently again and again that they would be open for service for Thanksgiving dinner. When we arrived today at Olive & June, there were no cars in the parking lot and all of the lights were off. We walked around the perimeters and peered in through the gates... not a person in sight. As first time visitors to Texas, we had no clue what else was in the area that would be open on Thanksgiving night this last minute. We sat in the car calling restaurant after restaurant with no luck. All of the grocery stores / marts we had passed by on the way over were closed for the day as well. Very unhappy with how our "reservation" turned out. Really poor management of the staff: 1) for giving out incorrect information 2) for not calling us a few days in advance to start looking at other options read more
