This is a good place to stop for lunch while driving I-5. There are two parts to the Olive Pit: the Shop and the Sandwich Shop. If you like all things olives including Balsamic Vinegar be very careful in the shop. You can easily run up a big bill by the time you get to the register. I think I counted a half a dozen different flavors of Balsamic Vinegar. Shelves of all kinds of olives and stuffed olives. Then there is the dried fruits and nuts. COVID-19 has changed the charm of the Sandwich Shop. They are only doing take out. Order at the counter and pick up at another counter. There are tables inside and outside where you can eat. This trip I ordered a Muffuletta Sandwich and a Black Raspberry Milkshake. My wife ordered a Muffuletta Burger and a Carmel Milkshake. The difference between the Sandwich and the Burger was the there was a burger patty in the burger. This being an olive shop I expected that the muffuletta to be top notch. I was not disappointed. It was excellent. My wife said the same about the burger. The milkshakes were pure old school with lots of ice cream and great flavor. This little gem of a place turned out to be a great stop for us on our way from northern central California to Mount Shasta. Stopping not only broke up an otherwise fairly monotonous road trip, but the food is wonderful. My wife and I shared a muffaletta sandwich; we had ours warmed before serving, and it was delightful. We bought some olives during the first stop, and we liked it so much that we returned on our way back home. Traveling and had always thought about stopping so today we finally did. We tried their sandwiches and it was disappointing. You basically had to build your own sandwich. Meaning you pick your sandwich that comes with no condiments on it and you add in what you like. Except to me the sandwiches are basic sandwiches that could be easily made at home. If I wanted to build my own sandwich, I would have chosen that option. This place also has a store with lots of goodies in it. Would totally make sense to me to showcase what you sell in the store with your sandwiches. And include all condiments that would make it. That's why you have a chef/cook. Keep the build your own but with all other sandwiches, include the condiments to make it a GREAT sandwich! Don't have me try and figure out what condiments compliment it. I rarely have to write a bad review. Since the whole covid shut down, I've noticed most places have really stepped up service and cleanliness even as they lack the staff to accommodate usual running tasks. Even when they are under supplied they tend to go above and beyond to try and mitigate the loss of business from those days. The Olive pit however has changed for the worst. I did not eat the food there as not only was the store but the restaurant area were both filthy. I went in to pick up some olives for my family who used to come here from Southern California all the time for their favorite almond stuffed olives. I purchased five jars of various types of stuffed olives. There was one person working a cash register, one of the two registers that were there, and she stood there chatting with the person standing by ice cream and ignoring a line of four people holding arms full of things. I spoke up and said excuse me, she put one hand up, finished her conversation and began checking us all out. I drove 6 hours in an air conditioned car with these jars in a cooler. When I arrived back home and we all opened the jars to sample our favorite olives, our nostalgic memories, the feelings that we missed so much, we were all distraught and disgusted. I still don't understand how, I did not know they could, but the olives had somehow turned. What should have been a savory firm bite of flavor was a sour, tongue biting, squish similar to the texture of a foamy creamy pudding with a skin. I could not believe what had just happened. I thought I had gone crazy or that my tastes have changed, except that everyone else tasted the same thing. It tasted like rancid, putrid, rotten and sour vegetation soaked in brine. As much as it pains me to write a bad review on yet another thing from my younger years that I loved so much, I'm afraid I just can't give this more than a single star. The place was filthy, the service was terrible, the prices have always been kind of high, the olives were rancid, but the atmosphere was still The Olive pit that I loved so much. The shakes are great! My favorite is chocolate macadamia. Sandwiches are fine, but expensive. Any time we are in Corning we stop and get shakes. It's in a super to get to easy location off I-5 with plenty of parking. Mostly high school kids working there, but they are nice. It's very busy at lunch. Don't forget to get olives, nuts, flavored balsamic vinegar and olive oil. The assortment is so varied. Try drizzling peach balsamic on vanilla ice cream. The garlic stuffed olives are a must. We also had lunch at their deli. They have sandwiches, burgers, and milkshakes. Your order the sandwich and then add toppings (lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, ketchup, pickles, olives) on your own. I had the muffeleta sandwich. It was good. This place was recommended by a colleague so I stopped by for breakfast on way up to Oregon. I had the ham Breakfast Sandwich served on a locally made English Muffins served with Provolone cheese, and I added lettuce for $7. The sammi also came with a very small side of tater tots. The best thing about the breakfast sandwich was the locally sourced English Muffin. It was outstanding. It tasted great and had a great texture. I liked the excess saltiness the crisp crust had. The egg portion inside was properly prepared, could of used a little seasoning, and the ham was great. It was a quality ham and came nice and warm. I also liked the way the Provolone cheese I choose was melted throughout. I was not a huge fan of the tater tots on the account they were underdone a bit most event with their lack of color and on the account they were to soft. This place is amazing. We only went there because I love olives and olive oil so much and I figured I could get some really high quality stuff. Did not initially realize they had a restaurant. Was a nice break on our trip. The restaurant looks somewhat like a fast food place where you order and pay then sit down and they call your name for pick up. We decided to get 2 different burgers and share. The burger meat itself was pretty average but the sauces were wonderful. One burger had muffuletta which is olive based, it was so good we bought a big bottle of muffuletta to take home. The other burger had a hot pepper jelly among other delicious toppings (we now own a jar of that as well). Once you get your food there is an olive bar that has much to offer in addition to olives so be sure to check that out. After lunch we roamed the shop which has a ton of different olives, olive oil and garlic themed jars of deliciousness. Nice gift boxes either pre-selected or build your own. On our way home from MonnBeam Farm, we stopped off at the Olive Pit for lunch and a look around. At the cafe, I got a Muffuletta Ciabatta Burger (delicious - I haven't had anything like this before). My husband got an OP burger (good meat and good bun). He did say it was light on sauce, but he didn't know if he should have asked for more. They don't have a kids meal, so we got our son the grilled cheese. She should have told us it was on a roll. Oh well. He ate some of it. We also got the tator tots, which had no flavor (not even salt and pepper). In the store, we got some cream cheese stuffed olives and a bottle of chocolate balsamic. We can't wait to cook with that! In the picture I took, there was an olive oil that was a fairground winner for years that we wanted to try, but they don't carry it anymore, so that was sad. When we aren't dealing with COVID-19 they usually have a tasting bar to sample their products. That's my favorite part of coming in! I always stop in and get a bottle of garlic olive oil for cooking, or a flavored vinegar for salads. They're always so good and the olives are grown locally in Corning! Nice pit stop to buy some olives or get a snack at the deli and use restroom. During COVID no tastings so it really isn't what it used to be. The deli is just doing food in take out containers and has a few indoor seats that they are letting people eat at now. They are a bit pricy but good variety of items for gifts and lots of different flavors of olives and olive stuffings. I came here with my family while on our way to my cousin's bridal shower. Normally I wouldn't have thought twice about stopping because, I don't really like olives! But since my sister and her husband have been here before and wanted us to check it out, I was fine with joining them. Little did I know, that they have an awesome shop of not only olives, but specialty olive oils, flavored vinegar's, wines, beer, candy, chocolates, gifts, kitchen gadgets and other fun items too numerous to mention! There is even a restaurant and wine/beer tasting bar on the premises! Like I said before, I'm not fond of olives, but most people are, and I couldn't help but be impressed with the huge selections and varieties of jarred olives in so many flavors! They also have an olive bar with free samples before you buy. We made use of the wine tasting section while it was open. Luckily, no one was there, because it is a small bar that seats about 4-5 people. So we happily took it over! We had a great time with Kayla our wine aficionado, as she poured some nice wine and beer selections for each of our tastes. It was only $5.00 for a flight. Needless to say, we found some nice choices and couldn't help but make some all important wine purchases! We really enjoyed Kayla's helpfulness and personality! All the employees we encountered were friendly and helpful! We will be returning to this area again, for my cousin's wedding! Olives galore. For the lovers of olives, this is paradise. I found this store (well the whole Corning town and their awesome olive festival) this past weekend just by coincidence. We were on our way to visit Mt Shasta and surrounding area for the first time (to get an idea of how many outdoors activities to do some day) and passed through that town. I could not believe this festival has been ongoing since 1956 and Corning is considered the Olive capital of the world (well, I am from Spain, so I guess I have to dissent on that:). Honestly, never seen a town with so many ancient olive trees, really ancient (well, this is not the Mediterranean but the olive cultivars did not arrive here until the missions, so still these seem really old to me). Olive Pit store and restaurant (annexed to each other) is unmistakable. A huge retro sign depicting an olive indicates the place from every corner. Inside, nice tiles in the retro looking olive bar (very generous offerings, btw) indicates that they have been operating since 1967, the year of the summer of love:). The store is pretty big and you will surely find some olive oil or olive jar of your liking. I got the blood orange one, super fragrant and my favorite olives from the full collection: queens filled with chipotle pepper, spicy and savory, and also found very original and tasty the queens filled with kalamata. read more

Their 18-year aged balsamic vinegar is my all-time favorite for salad dressings or just drizzling over... almost like a glaze. Amazing place! Saw the freeway sign on vacation driving through Corning, California, and wanted to stop to buy mom some olive oil as she doesn't use saturated fats. Found lots of wonderful things. Bought some Lemon Basil foam soap as a gift for my sister, some Mediterranean dip (for myself) (yum!) and an olive oil drizzle that I later sautéed some asparagus with (super yum!). My friend bought some Cajun Garlic Olives (I hate garlic, but he loves it). I didn't see a black olives (which I love), but my cousin told me they carried them. Bottom line, we decided to stop at The Olive Pit on the way home from vacation and stayed overnight just to hit them when they opened the next day. Unless you are getting the muffuletta I really wouldn't recommend it as a deli.
