Olives is, hands down, the best sandwich shop in SOHO. I pop in almost every afternoon for either their chicken sandwich or for the special lunch sandwich of the day. I am obsessed with their cookies, especially that triple chocolate salted cookie that they carry. One of the things I'm most thankful about my new job is that my coworker has introduced me to Olive's. This little soup, salad and sandwich shop in Soho produces some of the most phenomenal sandwiches. While I hate to wait in long lines for sandwiches at lunchtime, the line at Olive's moves fairly quick - you are in it for less than 5 minutes tops. This is strictly a to-go joint, as there aren't tables inside but there is a bench outside if you don't have an office to head home to. Sandwiches aren't made to order, but unlike one of those chains (like a Pax), these taste surprisingly fresh like someone just made them. Also, I think that since the sandwich is wrapped up in paper, as opposed to a cardboard container, it gives you the feeling that you are eating a sandwich packed with love from mom. While I've been to Olive's a few times, I usually go with the turkey sandwich - smoked turkey, lettuce, tomato, bacon, garlic mayo on sourdough bread. The sandwich generally stays together pretty well, but I wish that Olive's cut the sandwich in half as rectangles rather than diagonally as triangles because it can sometimes fall apart towards the end. However, the sandwich is so addicting that I have found myself picking up the pieces that have fallen apart and plopping bits of turkey in my mouth...in front of guests in our office. Classy. Other sandwich favorites in our office include the yellow tuna sandwich (I know there is tuna involved, but since I don't eat it, any convo about tuna I tune out) and the chicken sandwich. When you are in Olive's, I'd also recommend checking the blackboard closest to the window that has the specials of the day. I'm not a vegetarian, but Olive's has this delicious sandwich that will make anyone want to give up meat. The special includes avocado, sprouts, red onion, garlic mayo and sharp cheddar, on 7 grain bread. If this is available when you head to Olive's, I recommend giving it a try (rumor has it that it's only around on Thursday). I'm not going to lie - Olive's is a little on the pricey side, about $9 for the sandwich. I think it's the perfect-sized sandwich though, and definitely keeps me full for the remainder of the afternoon and into the evening. I recommend the Olive's Hero with marinated onions and olive tampanade. The 1/2 size was enough to keep me going through a long afternoon of shopping. Here's the deal: The Owner(forgot his name!) is one of the kindest souls I ever encountered. He whipped me up a HUGE sandwich since it was my first time coming. There are literally a million different combinations in terms of what you have for options to eat here (including Vegetarian). Everything tasted very fresh and flavorful (which confirms a lot of previous reviews). For some, this may seem pricey for a bite (which does have some merit) but my experience and pleasant surprise makes it all worth the while. In short, their sandwiches are spectacular. Their kind owner is generous and full of energy. The price is a bit on the higher end. Small portion, mediocre food for a lot of cash.. not worth it.. This place was surprisingly expensive for a mediocre sandwich that was very small, dry and pre-made sitting in front of the register (the Hero). I assumed they were going to make it when i ordered but that was not the case... We also got one of their pre-made salads but asked for a side of chicken.. They popped the lid off and threw on a few slices of chicken breast. For a few slices of dry chicken we were charged $7 while the whole salad with out it was $7.. Went there with co-workers this week, a first visit for us all. Not much to assess here, I'll just get right to the point. Its nestled in the most charming Manhattan has to offer so for the general or broader experience its gets thumbs up. The line quickly snakes out the front door but thats because its just so itsy-bitsy which in my case added to the excitement, curiosity, expectation factor. They have a hand written chalk board menu thats quite diverse and requires some study on your first visti but that line is really movin so you gotta figure your stuff out fast! Again, more excitement about the lunch experience to come. The steak and caramelized onion baguette samich looked super-yum but took too long to prepare so I went with TurkeyTomato Avacado Bacon Provolione.....I know, ambitious, right? But for kicks I had a cup of their tomato fennel soup to boot (I'm just such a sucker for a good bowl of soup). They bang it out fast as most samiches (yes I wanted to spell it this way) are pre-made so you're bag in hand in minutes. We get back to the office and dive in.....all the wait all the charm all the yummy menu items and what do you get......soup and a sandwich. Thats it. Back at the office we all agreed it was good, it was fresh, it was tasty.....but in all honesty there was and "x"factor missing. The Bread was the culprit in my estimation. It could've been heartier, grainier, tangier, doughier. I wanted Olive's to be hearty unique special and home-spun all the way around. Thats what SoHo is all about, right? I approach a store front like this and I want to know that I am getting something special and different but not just bigger and more expensive. Authentic, thats what you're hoping for here. I can't believe this place doesn't have a higher rating. Olive's without a doubt is the best sandwich place in NYC. I've made a lot of trips to Olive's in the NY heat and have never regretted it. Favorites include the Yellow fin Tuna Steak and Ancho Chili Rubbed Steak sandwich. Olive's also has daily sandwich specials with some pretty good options. Downsides (as mentioned by other Yelpers) include a longer line and higher prices. Expect to pay ~$9 for a sandwich. read more

So yes, your rare yellowfin tuna salad won't be soaking in dressing, in fact, it may be rather dry, but the tuna is great quality for the price. Plus, where else are you going to go? I used to get the chipotle chicken sandwich before I turned pescetarian (because the farming industry raises animals in a pit of hell) and it was amazing: rosemary focaccia, crisp watercress, fresh chicken, chipotle mayo, etc. Really great value and deal for however much it was. They also have these wing-dings for $4 that are gym-worthy. Remember how twinkies are sold in plastic-sealed packages for $0.50 each and now gourmet restaurants specialize in deep-fried twinkies? The set up of the eatery was absolutely adorable, a giant kitchen filled with energy and ingredients for all customers to see and watch. The fulfilling portion of crisp greens was topped with a generous Mediterranean mixture of chickpeas, kalamata olives, grape tomatoes, and feta cheese. Without my even requesting it, the restaurant had courteously placed my accompanying tomato-shallot vinaigrette in a separate cup. I dabbed my fork into the earthy dressing and found it appealing, but unnecessary. The salad was so fresh that the flavor of each ingredient shone through enough to render the vinaigrette pointless. The salad was served with a moist sourdough roll that was also delightful. Lastly, I ordered the well-portioned 16 oz. I used to work next door for 2 years and this was my favourite breakfast spot, which turns into an occassional lunch spot, and then my snack spot. Breakfast was lemonade and sticky buns. Those sticky buns are like sugar heaven! Lunch I would order their salad which was always fresh and just enough so you don't feel like your'e gonna explode. There was also some sandwhich with olive tapenade that was quite tasty, but can't remember which meat it was. Snack was their tasty cappuccinos and cowgirl or cowboy cookies. I LOVE COW COOKIES!
