When she tells you how much your bill is, listen carefully the first time because you will get your head chewed off if you ask her to repeat herself. English numbers are not pronounced how you think it's supposed to be pronounced so open your ears! Do not care for the attitude when it comes to customer service here. I would like to give On On a good review because I know 2 people that said we needed to try On On! I remember this building complex from the 1980s but never had a reason to come back to it until now. Well the parking lot to this complex needs to be repaved!! You need a truck because the ground is unbelievably bumpy!! Not On On's fault, but just a heads up. Anyway, the food was fresh and the prices were reasonable. Service was quick and pleasant. Unfortunately the food was too bland for my taste. I don't eat too much salt, and most of the time food is too salty for me, but their food was too bland for me. The Ong Choi was mostly leaves and not too much stems, so not much taste. We ordered cold ginger chicken and I'm sorry, but it had to be thee worst cold ginger chicken I've had! The meat was hard dry and I didn't care for the ginger green onion sauce because it had too much five spice. Also not sure if it was half a chicken or chicken leg quarter. I started going back to On On around 4 or 5 years ago when my Chinese handyman friend took me there for lunch a couple times. The food was surprisingly good in contrast to what was reported in my previous review. I guess going with a Chinese guy who knows what to order and knows the restaurant's owners elevates the taste. My group of nine Yelp buddies also frequented On On as well as Lagoon Chinese, so you know the food is solid. And after not going there for about six months or so (not because of negatives but because there are so many good restaurants around town), I went with my old office group recently and the food was tasty. My family & I stumbled upon this little gem! We'd been in Hawaii for a few days and our parents were craving for some comforting Chinese food so decided to stop by for dinner. We're so happy that we decided to give On On a try because it is now a spot that we will return to the next time we're in Hawaii and craving for some authentic Chinese food. All of the dishes we ordered were flavorful & hit the spot. Ingredients were fresh & the owner helped is pick a veggie dish especially since she mentioned they didn't have certain vegetables due low inventory as a result of the floods. I especially liked the salt & pepper chicken wings! Sooooo crispy! The food wasn't overly salty and didn't have too much MSG as we didn't wake up dying of thirst the next day. Where has On On been my entire life? I was introduced to On On take out by a friend and I loved the food from the first bite. The second time, I placed a take out order for my family and we ordered: - salt and pepper pork chops - char siu fried rice - crispy gau gee - beef chow funn The food took less than 10 minutes. Granted, we came during an off time (like 5:30 PM), but still. That was insanely fast and the food was still hot by the time we drove 20 minutes home. Like obscenely hot. The lady working the front looked like she was the owner. Very no nonsense. Just: what are you ordering. Rang us up, then told us to go wait outside for 5 minutes. The restaurant itself is small and compact. Again, I saw it in person at 5:30 PM on a random weekend and it was quiet. Not loud, bustling, or overwhelming. Just quiet and unassuming. The food was excellent. I enjoyed everything. The flavors were warm, familiar, and not greasy at all. The gau gee was perfectly fried and had a ton of filling. We were there to try their cake noodles and WOW they did not disappoint us. We decided to try OnOn House Special which was the best we've had since being here. We've been too a few others in Chinese Cultural Plaza and this was the best experience. Service was quick as we were early. Parking can be a challenge because it's a small strip mall. Restaurant is clean and comfortable. Prices are competitive with other restaurants in this business. We'll be back on our next trip home. Thank you On-On. Rediscovered On On Chinese Restaurant after 8 years. On On was one of my dad's favorite restaurants. Haven't been back since he passed. Located on Kapahulu at Charles St.. Private parking lot with two designated stalls for the restaurant. The mauka (North) bound traffic on Kapahulu Ave. can be quite busy, but there is a traffic signal at the entrance to Safeway plaza, just a half a block makai (South). This allows for patrons to safely turn into the On On parking lot. Mind you, there is an entrance on Charles St., however, it is not open all the time. Best to stick to the one on Kapahulu. If you prefer, head makai (South) on 6th Ave. Turn on Olu St. and make a right on Kapahulu. The parking lot entrance is just a few feet away. The Gov't shutdown has a lot of people tightening up the purse strings and it was 11am, so it's not surprising to see the restaurant empty of diners. There were takeout orders waiting to be picked up though. That's a good sign. The dining room is spotless. Everything is so clean and tidy. Very inviting. Onto the food. I ordered the combo A, (I posted a pic of it.) from a few weeks ago. The lemon chicken was crispy and the lemon sauce was nice and tangy. The beef in the beef broccoli was super tender and the broccoli was cooked but still had a little snap to the stem. Wonderful. The shrimp canton, ok, now we all know that deep fried items tend to get soft as they sit, especially in a sauce, but this one remained crunchy throughout the meal, which got started about 45 minutes after picking it up. So good! The fried rice was fabulously tasty. I like my fried rice a little crispy burnt and the kitchen staff did a great job. No, I didn't special request it that way. Second time back, I had to get the fried rice as it was so memorable I needed to have it again....soon! It was sublime!I also ordered the mabo tofu for mom. Of course I need to taste it. I ordered it medium spicy, but it really wasn't. All good though. It was very nice. MK has stiff competition now for mom's Sunday lunches. I am going back again this Sunday. What to order next?!? This was my first visit to this restaurant. It was for a graduation dinner. The service was wonderful, and each of the dishes were delicious. I often find Chinese restaurant food to be too salty. Definitely not a problem here. Flavorful and fresh. Cute little spot next to Ululani's shave ice. Small, free parking lot. Friendly service and good Cantonese (?) food menu. We tried the oxtail soup, chicken with salty fish fried rice, and fish filet with ginger/scallion sauce. The fish was delicious but portion a little on the small side. Fried rice was good but needed more salty fish. Oxtail soup very flavorful and delicious. Also ordered a side of broccoli with garlic sauce that was tasty. Posting this review because we were met with incredible unkindness by this business today. After a visit to the zoo, we had planned to get take out for lunch. Our daughter wanted to enjoy shaved ice as well so we planned to order our take out, go next door for a treat, then bring our food home with us. I should mention that we HAVE done this before at this establishment with zero issues. However, after parking in a stall marked for their customers (which we had planned to be!), our daughter had an episode causing her to throw up milk all over my husbands shirt and some of the sidewalk. We knelt down in front of the restaurant to clean up and comfort our 2 year old. We used wipes and a water bottle to clean up as best we could. While we were managing the situation, a woman came out and gave us the most stink look and went back inside. We continued cleaning, even tried to wash the sidewalk off the best we could and contained all our trash in a doggie clean up bag; washed our hands with bottled water we had in the car. We did not get shaved ice, but still wanted to bring home lunch so my husband went into the restaurant to order while I waited by the door to care for our child. He didn't have extra clothes, so the front of his shirt was wet and a bit dirty from what just happened. The same woman met him with no greeting and simply said "you can't throw that away here" referring to the tied doggie bag with the wipes we'd used to clean. He said we weren't going to dine in, he just wanted to order take out and there was no need for that. She again raised her voice and asked what we were doing in the restaurant. My husband repeated that we were trying to order take out and said he didn't appreciate her raising her voice at him. She continued to speak to him with contempt and told my husband he was dirty. He once more asked to order take out. She did not respond to the question but asked again what we were doing in their restaurant. We did not order take out. We left and will never patronize this business again. To treat a young family this way after you just saw a literal medical issue occur with a CHILD was horrible. There was absolutely no kindness or compassion for their would be customers. I understand they reserve the right to refuse service to whomever they choose, but will not be returning to this place after this experience. NO ALOHA. read more

New favorite Chinese restaurant :) We went during the storm on 3/13. We were driving around for an hour trying to find somewhere that was open and no luck. We finally saw their open sign lit up amongst all dark stores. We sat down excited to eat, and this lady (the owner I think?) explained that since the Internet/credit card machine is down, she can only accept cash. I only had $7 in my wallet, so we said that we are sorry we can't pay. And she said she will just take my number down and I can pay her later! We got lemon chicken, stuffed tofu, walnut shrimp, cake noodle, and ginger fish and we finished ALL OF IT. Not only was the food good, but I really appreciated the kindness and trust from her. This small shop in Kapahulu hides a beautiful dining room and amazing cake noodles. I ordered crispy gay chee mein with cake noodles. I ordered the gravy separate. And it was amazing. I prefer my cake noodles crispy and these were very crisp. The topping was great and I was impressed with how much filling the gay chee had. Everything was delicious and each dish had its own distinct flavor. Loved the lamb casserole, sweet clams with black bean sauce, stuffed eggplant, and especially the gailan with fried flounder. Today I was encouraged to do a review for #ThankyouThursday. So many business to be thankful for and I decided to do one on a long time neighborhood Chinese restaurant that I've only discovered this year. I've passed by here many of times but only have been to the other On On Chinese restaurant many years ago on McCully which was no longer in business. We had a gathering here earlier this year so I was able to try many of dishes! I was impressed how good the food was here and I've missed out all these years. We have tried other restaurants, but you can tell how talented the cook(s) were here. Of course some dishes maybe better than others and by preference you would like some over others. Pretty much everything tasted good with some old school dishes most restaurant might not make anymore. With all the Chinese restaurants closing recently, I would continue to support here. It's so hard to stay in business and get help and we need to support the small and local businesses. I always enjoyed the Kau yuk with taro, steamed pork hash with salty duck egg, and the orange peel chicken was what I really like. It was not too sweet and it was like orange peel mui on your chicken lol. I've tried their Sweet and sour cabbage with squid, deep fried squid and salt & pepper chicken wings. So many variety of dishes! They have a big open parking lot with one or two other businesses opened on the strip mall! It's next to Leonard's Bakery but no bakery parking here. A few Yeep friends went to dine here and raved about their experience so I put On On Chinese Restaurant on my radar. It's funny because I pass by this restaurant thousands of times but never thought to go dine here. One day Lunch Buddy asked what I was doing because she had omiyage for me. I wasn't available the day she messaged me but I suggested lunch there next day. She immediately said On On! I replied that it'll only be good if it's a few people so we can try more dishes. She sent a few messages and we were a party of 5 lol. On On Chinese Restaurant is located off of Kapahulu right across the street from Safeway and Leonard's Bakery. They are in the same building as Karaoke Hut and Verizon. There is ample parking in their private lot when tourist aren't parking there to go Leonard's. The inside of the restaurant is more spacious than expected and very clean. Customer service by the owner was friendly and they speak Cantonese here. The Mayor of Chinatown was with us so he took care of the ordering. Our order was Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings, Deep Fried Squid, Sweet and Sour Cabbage w/Squid, Sweet & Sour Spareribs, Kau Yuk w/Taro, Minute Chicken Look Funn and Stuffed Bittermelon. Like Fran C said on his Review of the Day, it was a pleasant dining experience. The food lived up to the hype of Donna O and Paul C. Since we were going to be in the area, I called in a take out order for minute chicken cake noodles, crispy gau gee, string beans with minced pork, and mongolian beef. My mom really liked the food and gave it two thumbs up. "Put it on the rotation!". I was impressed by the amount of minute chicken that came with the cake noodles - more than average. ***4.5 STARS*** I have driven past On On Chinese Restaurant (OOCR) many, many times when on Kapahulu Ave and never gave much thought about dining here. Then, I saw Fran C.'s post of minute chicken with chow funn noodles, which did look good but didn't motivate me enough. The deciding factor? Auntie (aka Nadine C.) who planned a mutual friend's birthday celebration. More than half of the attendees were traveling from Windward side so this is a bold statement. Located in the strip mall next to Leonard's Bakery, OOCR has been in business for over 15 years and the staff mentioned they are not related to the previous On On at McCully Chinese restaurant. We went to celebrate Deborah P.'s birthday and Auntie previously pre-ordered the food but couldn't remember the menu. We arrived 25min earlier than our reservation and was placed in a round table with a lazy Susan. The waitress served us with hot tea and water and reviewed the menu with us, where we made some adjustments as single orders wouldn't suffice. It had been some time since I last saw some of the attendees, so we chatted and discussed current and past events before the food was served. THE VERDICT: The food and service at OOCR exceeded my expectations. Despite seeing local Chinese food offerings on the menu, they do have old-school and difficult to find menu items such as kau yuk (braised pork belly) with taro and steamed pork hash with either duck egg or salted fish. Here's a summary of what we ordered. KAU YUK w/ TARO (4.5/5) This dish really reminded me of those 9-course meals I attended as a kid. The braised pork belly was tender, and the fat had been rendered so it melted in your mouth. The taro was sliced just right where it was tender and didn't fall apart when picking up. It was seasoned well with five spice and oyster sauce. The gravy was delicious with rice. HONEY WALNUT SHRIMP (5/5) This was my favorite dish of the evening. It was served piping hot with a crunchy exterior but not excessively battered. The mayonnaise sauce was lightly applied so the dish didn't get soggy. The caramelized walnuts were slightly sweetened and had a great crunch. One of the best honey walnut shrimps I've eaten on Oahu. STEAMED PORK HASH w/ SALTED DUCK EGG (4.5/5) This is another dish that's hard to find at Chinese restaurants. Many of the mom-and-pop restaurants in Chinatown are no longer in business. The pork hash was flavorful, tender without gristle, seasoned just right. I was somewhat caught off guard that the restaurant didn't dress any dark soy sauce on top and they took the liberty of portioning the dish by cutting them into triangles for easy serving and was surely appreciated. SWEET AND SOUR CABBAGE w/ SQUID (4.5/5) It's quite interesting as I like to compare this dish with other Chinese restaurants and OOCR also executed this dish very well. The chef here is skilled in controlling the wok's temperature. I really appreciated the smokiness from the wok hei and the controlled tanginess of this dish. The squid used was also very tender. ONG CHOY w/ HARM HA SAUCE, or fermented shrimp paste (4/5) Another great dish that was cooked in high heat and you could taste the wok hei in this dish. The vegetables weren't overcooked so you still had that crunch, but it was a tad bit salty to my taste. MINUTE CHICKEN w/ CAKE NOODLE (3/5) I found this dish to be the less desirable for me. The cake noodle was cooked the "lazy" method where the noodles were formed in a small circle so it piled high, making the cake squares large and tall. I'm accustomed with restaurants spreading the noodles farther, making it flat and fried golden brown with more crunchy exterior. The choy sum vegetables were boiled and slightly overcooked. As the chef inserted the veggies into the dish, it was soft and not pleasant. E-MEIN NOODLES (4/5) Ordering noodles for long life is a must during a birthday when eating Chinese food. This dish was also executed well with the noodles braised long enough so it was tender and still with a chewiness to it. The noodles were seasoned well and tossed with some chicken, bean sprouts and Chinese peas. Sadly, this dish came out last and most of us were pretty much full. Service was above average. The staff repeated came to our table to check up on us, refilled our tea pot and water glasses, removed excess dishes and even nicely packed our leftovers for us. The staff knew we brought our own birthday cake, so they made it a priority to clear the table for the cake presentation. Overall, a surprising first visit to OOCR that has me wanting to bring my family here to sample the food. I am hoping for the food here will also bring back memories of our childhood days as we were raised on Maunakea Street in Chinatown. read more

I called On On Chinese Restaurant (located on Kapahulu Avenue) and placed my order. There's a free shared parking lot right in front of the restaurant, so, pick up was a breeze! The food was ready and I went on my way. At mom's house, I opened the package, took photos, and started to eat. Wow... Delicious! I could taste the smokey essence of the seasoned wok. The chicken has a slight crunchy char. The noodles were satisfyingly chewy. The squid was a bit tough, but the cabbage was so tasty with garlic and black beans - and the cabbage was chopped up into bite-sized pieces! We both agreed that the food was excellent! I ordered Beef Broccoli Cake Noodle. The food arrived very quickly. The "cakes" of noodle were small and bite-sized, as were the beef and broccoli.
