Time for an update as I realized my last review of Golden Eagle Chinese Restaurant dates back to 2014. I used to come here all the time with my coworkers for lunch, as Golden Eagle Chinese Restaurant was just a hop, skip, & jump away from my office. Through the years, the business & location hasn't changed, but if I'm correct, I owners of the business have changed hands several times. I remembered the last time I came here was during Covid-19 where Golden Eagle Chinese was just doing "take-out" and no dining inside was available. Since the pandemic has passed us, everything is back to normal with the exception of different owners. This past Sunday I decided to drop by the Golden Eagle Chinese Restaurant to buy some steamed fish filet for my dad. Upon arriving at the restaurant, I must say not much has changed as far as the decor of the restaurant. What I did get from Golden Eagle was fast and friendly service, and a wonderfully made dish of steamed fish filet with ginger & onion (dad approved)! This is an old school Chinese restaurant that locals know about. Janey told me to meet her here and I had never been and she was surprised. It's quaint inside, but again, old school, so you'll see some boxes stacked in the corner. Janey got there first and said the man working was kinda unfriendly. But I think it was more about not knowing who we were, and like I said, lots of locals that frequent. The woman working was really nice! I just let Janey order. We started with some delicious hot n sour soup. The fried rice was really good! Loved the crispy skin duck! The gau gee mein had a great assortment of vegetables! And the sauteed choy sum(?) was good! Overall, really good local Chinese food! Though the interior is nice, it was a little warm even with the AC. Another great meal at Golden Eagle ! Had their Seafood cake noodles for the 1st time - yum ! The seafood was cooked perfectly and the cake noodles done very well. Golden Eagle Chinese was a good meal and a convenient delivery option while staying in Honolulu. I ordered the Yang Chow Fried Rice and Salt & Pepper chicken wings. The fried rice was flavorful with a nice mix of ingredients, and the wings were crispy with good seasoning. Food arrived hot to my hotel room and portions were solid. I often forget Golden Eagle exists, but I'm glad they are still around. I recently stopped by and picked up a dinner plate, after getting my hair cut next door. Their dinner plate is a great combination of items and is ready in a short amount of time. Since I enjoyed the dinner plate so much, I went back and ordered off their regular menu. The chicken salad, steamed pork hash w/ salted fish, sam see mein, and minute chicken. The total with tax was around $72. I ordered my food before I went to cut my hair, and it was ready when I was done. Everything tasted good and I would definitely order from them again. Being fast isn't always the best. This is my first time back since the new owners took over Golden Eagle and Duk Kee. I had a decent experience at Duk Kee, and it seems like they want to offer more traditional Cantonese dishes vs. Western style Chinese dishes, but appears to be Duk Kee only as the menu looks to be exactly the same. A welcome is having Chinese on the menu. Not much difference as in appearance outside and inside. We ordered the Minute Chicken Cake Noodle, Beef with Ginger and (regular yellow) onions, and ong choy with garlic. All these dishes came out exceedingly fast. A a couple of minutes fast. Everything was not piping hot when it came out. It was just up to temp. Ever though, there were scorch marks, there was absolutely no wok heat. Every item in all the dishes felt and tasted like they were all precooked and just reheated up. The cake noodle was quite thick with zero taste. The chicken was under seasoned, and the sauce was one note. Choy sum was pre-boiled and tossed in. They were quite soft. Needed soy sauce and hot mustard to save it. The beef slices either wasn't cooked through and/or had too much meat tenderizer/baking soda. It had this weird metallic, chemical taste and unusual texture. Overall taste and flavor were one note. It should be fragrant with all the onion and ginger, but it wasn't at all. The ong choy was the better tasting dish, but not mixed very well as some parts were bland and others were salty and strong. Similar to the Choy sum, the ong choy tasted and ate like it was pre-boiled and refrigerated. Overall, I'm not a fan of this style of speedy service. I know several restaurants do this with their food to be more efficient, but nothing was handled with enough care. What's the point of cooking it so fast? The food isn't properly mixed or up to temp, the flavors don't come out or developed, and zero wok heat. Just let the wok get hot, or cook a little bit longer will make a big difference. The food wasn't awful, but it could have been better. Service was good though. Friendly and attentive. With so many similar Chinese restaurants, I'll pass on this one. It was also kinda pricey compared to other places. At least it was better than the previous time! read more

One of my wife's favorite Chinese dishes is Peking Duck (with Buns). We had been picking them up at Golden Duck since it's close by. I had heard of Golden Eagle from an acquaintance, so I had it in mind to try them once. It was my first time there, so I gathered from the online map that it would be near the corner of S. King and Isenberg Streets. I entered the parking lot and didn't see it until I was near Young Street. Even then, the sign outside was difficult for me to read. It was before the 10:30 a.m. opening time, but the "Open" light was already on. As I entered, a gentleman greeted me. I ordered a half order of Peking Duck w/ Buns, and Ong Choy w/ Garlic Sauce to go. He said it would take about 20 minutes. He invited me to have a seat while I waited. Soon afterwards, a couple entered and were seated. After a few minutes, another couple entered. In the meantime, the phone was ringing and orders were being taken. I made my way home after my order was called. The container was still hot when I arrived home. My wife was eager to try the food. When she tasted the duck, she said it wasn't salty, which pleased her. She had taught me a different way to enjoy Peking Duck -- instead of using the included sliced green onions, she would insert both the cooked, flavored ong choy and the duck into the bun. It tastes pretty good this way, so I've begun doing this as well. That's why I made it a point to order the Ong Choy w/ Garlic Sauce. After we both had our fill, I asked her how Golden Eagle compared with Golden Duck. She said that today's food from Golden Eagle was better -- that the dishes were saltier at Golden Duck. The first time I went here (nearly 20 years old) I ordered something generic and was okay with it. My brother, who I was living with ordered the minute chicken cake noodle and since then that's been the ONLY thing I order from Golden Eagle. Still slaps to this day. I love how you get hot tea with your order automatically. When I went recently it was busy af during lunch time so make sure you avoid the 12-1:30pm time slot. Every table was taken so I take that as a good sign. What's not to like here? Everybody happy with good food and excellent service. Yes please. Coming here more often because I owe it to them. Celebrated Mother's Day a little later with take home meals from Golden Eagle Chinese Restaurant. Every single dish was made with bursting flavors. We enjoyed every dishes! Our favorites were oysters with green onions and ginger, Hong Kong style fried noodles, ong choy with ham ha and garlic sauce, and the stuffed eggplant. The staffs were quick and friendly as we waited for our meal. The restaurant is like any other Chinese restaurants but definitely big in serving delicious dishes! One thing I'd recommend is using different containers for dishes with sauces. By the time we got home, some of the sauce spilled on top of each containers. We were invited to dinner with friends and meet my cousin which was a great surprise! We ordered family style where everyone order a dish we had the beef chow fun which was very delicious. The scallops with Chinese peas & mushrooms also were good except the scallops were so small you could hardly taste the scallops, but the vegetables were nice and crispy. The egg plant and shrimp was really good and not too spicy and the egg plant was cooked just right, The lemon chicken was very good and tasty! While I normally don't do reviews this needed to be said that the service this time was unacceptable. I did a take out order, in person of four items when we got back to our destination, [near Don Quixote] one item was not the item I ordered. So took it back and basically they just said sorry and swapped out the item. I wasn't asked to get a credit difference on that item which we know that we were overcharged. Also, I just want to mention that part of this is on me because I did not check on all the items prior to leaving the restaurant. We live here now, I guess? Sadly, our formerly favorite neighborhood Chinese has been sold and just isn't the same. For you Kaimuki folks, yes I'm talking about Duk Kee, and yes, I understand that the owners of Golden Eagle actually bought out the former owners of Duk Kee. However, the food here is so much better. Which is sad for us because we loved Duk Kee and it's closer to home, etc. But the menu is different here! And there are certain things that are unique to G.E. (ahem, honey walnut *eggplant* for you non-shrimp-eating people). Actually it was the eggplant that brought us back here. It's a delicate, but yet very crispy crunch. We also ordered the sweet sour cabbage with pork and minute chicken cake noodles. These noodles taste good and were pretty crispy even though they were covered in that minute chicken sauce. Yeah, everything we had was good. The staff seemed slammed, though. We went for a semi-early dinner and almost immediately after being seated, like 5 or more parties came in. So service was not the fastest, but still totally fine. Parking has changed here recently if you haven't been to the Old Stadium Mall in awhile. It's a decent sized lot and parking is free in the lot for 1 hour, but after that you have to pay using a QR code? I'm not sure exactly how they're monitoring this, but we've seen an unmarked car come by, take pictures of cars and leave a ticket, so beware. None of the shop owners (I've asked others in the same strip mall and gotten different answers) seem to know for certain whether or not you need to scan that code even if you're only staying less than 1 hour? G.E. has an enlarged version of the QR at the entrance for your convenience. Anyway, definitely try out Golden Eagle! Ok, lets talk about this little gem in Moiliili. The service is great, server was very friendly and made sure everything was ok. One of the specials was this "steamed tofu with pork." Nothing fancy, but so plain, so simple. It was like "comfort food", though I've never had something like that before. I've been coming to Golden Eagle Chinese Restaurant for literally decades...ever since I was a kid! I have the fondest memories of eating ono cake noodles covered in a savory sauce and topped with crispy minute chicken with my parents. Even with inflation, they've managed to keep prices reasonable. Brought my nephew who's visiting from the mainland plus three local friends who have never eaten here before. Not busy when we got there (5:45pm) but it picked up shortly after we ordered. Mui was our absolutely gracious and entertaining server. We gave her a big tip to show our appreciation and how much we enjoyed the food. I forgot to take photos of all the dishes we had, except for a couple of partially eaten ones. Always make it a point to stop here for take-out after my hair appointment next door. Only posting one pic, because that's all I get here: Crispy Gau Gee Cake Noodle. The order actually comes with four pieces of gau gee, which is plenty, considering everything else served in the dish. The parking has changed so you'll now have to use your cell phone camera to open the QR code which will take you to a site to add your license plate number as well as your cell phone number. The parking is free for the first hour but if you're going to be there longer you can either pay for the extra time or you can wait for the text that will remind you that you getting close to your one hour time limit. What a great mom and pop shop! This has been my favorite place to get Honey Walnut Shrimp! Amazing flavor, crispy walnuts, juicy shrimp. Love it! The only reason this place gets a 4 star is the beef chow fun was a little too dry. The beef was tender thankfully, but it was lacking in flavor. No frills, but our family had a very enjoyable meal here today. Highlights: Service was friendly and the food came out so fresh and fast. Server warned us that the soups were priced for 4 bowls, so we were grateful we didn't accidentally order 16 bowls of soup. Egg-foo young - fresh, light, fluffy eggs with crispy fried veggies inside. Chop suey from the lunch special (light sauce, well seasoned, very homey if you're Chinese) Roast pork Fried rice-grains of rice we individually separated, as it should be, and well seasoned Beef chow funn-meat was tender, noodles cooked well, nicely seasoned Not as great: Eggplant with tofu: the flavor was decent, but the skin of the eggplant was really hard/chewy. Maybe it was a bit old? (Small portion due to lunch special): Sweet and sour pork ribs- flavor was only ok, and the meat was pretty tough. Not our fav. (Small portion due to lunch special): Pot roast stewed beef- over stewed, meat was tough. We weren't a fan of the flavor either. (Got the 2 from the lunch special and 8 as an the appetizer): Gau gee - we were expecting pan fried dumplings, but got pork meat in crispy wonton like wrappers. Meat was under seasoned, and we didn't care for the sauce, but it was interesting and worth trying, just don't order too much. Firstly, if you are going to take out, make sure the lady with the glasses rings you up. If the shorter lady rings you up and you pay cash , she will add $5 to your bill if you pay cash and hand you a piece of paper with chinese wrinitng in pencil if you ask for a receipt ( its happened 3 times so far) Also if the man with the glasses comes out from the kitchen to ring your order up ( on wednesdays, maybe thursdays) he will struggle to get everything rung up because he doesnt know how to use the cash register ( its one of those white ones with no customer facing display) The best part of this place is the shrimp canton. Do NOT order the fried rice as its hard and ovecooked. Do NOT order the special pork belly with chinese brocolli as the pork is hard and inedible but tastes like dried bacon. Also beware when you open and close the door on Sundays as the church upstairs has a bunch of ppl that hang out by the door and dont pay attention to people going in and out. And be carefull when you order dishes with beef ( like beef brocolli) or crispy gau gee as we ordered it twice and everyone got diahhrea from one of those two. We tried, we really tried to make this our goto chinese restaurant as its close to home but the get sick multiple times, change price multiple times, strange people hanging out by the door from church upstairs asking for money , we give up read more
