The calzones are legendary. That's all that needs to happen here. But it's not all they do. Pizza is excellent, one good pasta entree after another, terrific garlic bread with cheese (marinara is mandatory with that, and if you're semi-advanced, bury a spoonful or two of parmesan in it so it'll melt). Only sandwich I've had there was a Philly, and it was excellent. Stuffed shells once in a while, maybe some other pasta dish (they also do some off-menu things). But the problem is, it's really hard to get away from the calzones. Also, for some reason, the chicken noodle soup is like your Jewish mom makes. Not even kidding. Never seen it at an Italian place, but it's terrific and it'll heal you. Probably you should make up your own mind, though, because I'll admit to heavy prejudice. I've known these guys since the early '80s. OG's reminds me of the neighborhood Italian places in L.A. (where I grew up through 8th grade) and on the East Coast (where I haven't been for a really long time, but if you have, you know what I'm talking about). I don't see how anybody lives in a town without a place like this. If you know a little Italian, one of the guys will probably go back and forth with you a little. Start 'em off with a "come stai" (or if they ask you, just say "bene, bene, e tu?"). Unless you're really fluent, it'll get out of hand pretty quickly after that, but they don't care. Totally off-point here, but I was at the place one time after watching an Italian film called _Kaos_, set in Sicily, and I happened to mention it to Jerry since that's where he's from. Pretty obscure film, or at least I thought it was. He say "Oh _yeah_, I know that one," and starts quoting dialogue and details of scenes. Says it really stuck with him because it reminds him of home and playing soccer ("calcio" to most Italians, but he's used to American), and says he was "pretty good" in a way you know means _really_ good. I doubt he's overstating. Anyway...that's the kind of thing that happens. He'll come over and hang at the table if he knows you, ask how la famiglia is, etc. Same for Sal. But the calzones...there's something about the dough that is so basic and traditional and perfect, just the right hint of salt, the right consistency...no way to do it justice in words. It's not health food, but you can't live on arugula and sprouts. If you've ever liked a place and been going there so long that it would actually come up in a conversation about moving away and how you'll have to give it up, that's the kind of place this is and people these are. read more

I had heard this place had good calzones so my wife and I decided to try it. We ordered the mozzarella caprese with roasted peppers. It cheese had great flavor and the tomatoes were fresh. The roasted red peppers added a nice touch. We were glad we ordered this for an appetizer. We then split a supreme calzone. The waitress had recommended that we got ranch sauce instead of marinara since she said there would be plenty of marinara in the calzone. My wife wanted to try it so I agreed. Good service and food what more could you ask for. I was nervous to get the Philly at an Italian hole in the wall but it was bomb.

This was our first time coming here and I have to say, I was not disappointed with the pizza. The calamari on the other hand.. $8.50 and you do get a lot, but the flavor was just weird. They look like fried chicken and they don't really even taste like calamari. Maybe came frozen and out of a bag? Wouldn't recommend that one. I do recommend the pizza though!! If you like a lot of cheese, this is the pizza for you. Gooey cheese with every bite, not too much sauce so if you like a lot of sauce you'll need to ask for it, and just a great crust flavor and texture. Sooo good! And the 16" is great for two people to share. We still have 4 slices left over because it was way too big to eat all at once! Overall, it was a nice dinner. Everything was very clean, the table was wiped down before we sat, the waitress was so sweet and they put us away from where other people were sitting so we social distanced. I believe the owner or manager came up to us and asked us how the food was and thanked us for coming in. Definitely will be coming back here! read more

My son and I stopped in at the 50th St location. First off, staff was welcoming and friendly. We ordered an appetizer of garlic cheese bread and it lived up to its name. Very good! Went with a group of people to "One Guy From Italy's" last evening based upon recommendations from several locals in Lubbock. The venue is pretty throwback having the feel of one of those restaurants that "time forgot, which I liked. We had a large party and most ordered calzones, which were enormous and everyone said they loved theirs although some folks ordered pizza and their reports were favorable. I opted for the eggplant parm sandwich, which was tasty and filling. The prices for everything on the menu are reasonable. The only downside and it's minor is that the beer selection is pretty thin; all American beers and even though the menu says they have wine for some reason none was available this evening, which was kind of disappointing as a glass of red wine always pares nicely with pizza and Italian dishes. Otherwise this place is worth trying. read more

This is the place for calzone, they have the dough right. With good prices and wide menu it makes me wonder what they could have done with a few more guys from Italy (or a woman). The Cesar salad and wings are fine and the pasta dishes are great. read more

I've been here many times!!! Especially all of high school considering I went to school right down the street! The food was delicious as usual, the lobster ravioli was awesome!! But the service as usual was not meeting the expectations. 1. The waiter maybe filled our drinks once the entire time we were there. 2. 50 minute wait for the food, which I don't mind when the food is as good as there's is. I had decided to get delivery here today and was answered on the phone by an extremely rude lady. When she told me the pasta choices were spaghetti, fettuccine, or penne; I simply asked if they happened to have angel hair pasta. Her reply was, "SPAGHETTI, FETTUCCINE, PENNE!!!" I then asked if I could have some extra mozzarella for the Mozzarella Caprese and was put on hold for a few minutes until she angrily asked "How many pieces more you want?!?" I told her and she replied, " Well I'm just gonna have to charge you for a whole extra order then!" I told her that was fine and when she gave me the total and how long it would take, I replied with a polite "thank-you" and was answered with a grunt that sounded like "uh-huh" I would have rated one star, but the food tasted good as usual. From now on though I think I'll just get their delicious calzones on University for lunch, because the service sucked! read more

I do quit a bit of traveling for work and asked for a good local place. As soon as I came in for lunch I never felt like a customer. The restaurant has a very homie and welcoming atmosphere and I felt more like family than a customer. The service was prompt. But no of this compairs to the food. I've been coming to One Guy for years now and love just about everything that they have on the menu. I never hesitate to suggest One Guy when friends or family are in town because they have a pretty large menu and can fill up anybody. I usually order the classic calzone but went instead with pasta and meatballs this time. I also ordered our table some garlic knots to start with and had soup that came with the pasta dish. I much prefer food when you can tell that it's made from scratch as the pasta was and having it be delicious is just icing on the cake. The only down side to this particular visit was the very shady service that we had. This was the first time that I have had a bad experience here and it worries me that the service is going south. I'm thinking the waitress was new and she'll quickly learn how people would prefer to be served but you can't be too sure. I try to be patient and understanding but this lady was too much. I ordered pasta and the server left only to return a few minutes later and said that it came with soup or salad (this is why I'm thinking she's new). I asked what kind of soup was being offered and she left again to find out, when she came back I was told the option was chicken or vegetable. I found out as it was being delivered that the choices were (more precisely) chicken noodle soup or minestrone. The waitress came to the table and said I'll get you a refill in a second, came back in a few seconds to ask if it was alright if she filled up my glass then left again, returned a third time with a pitcher in hand and asked yet again if I'd like more ice tea. Generally if my glass is just a few melting ice cubes with no sign of iced tea before my meal even arrives than its safe to say I'd like some more... rarely does somebody need to ask three times to fill it. She was terribly awkward and the whole meal was uncomfortable when she came over. read more
