I had to fast for a blood draw this morning, so I already knew that the second my appointment was over, I was going to be STARVING. Thankfully, the universe had impeccable timing because yesterday I got those Buy 1, Get 1 Free coupons for Ono Hawaiian BBQ in the mail. And for once in my life, I actually remembered to USE the coupon instead of finding it three months later, expired and judging me from the bottom of my purse. So obviously, lunch was decided: Chicken Katsu with white rice and DOUBLE macaroni salad, because their mac salad deserves that kind of commitment. When I walked in, there was only one person ordering ahead of me. The restaurant was nice, quiet, and clean. The staff was friendly, and the wait was just long enough to tell me my food was actually being made fresh instead of sitting under a heat lamp questioning its life choices. And it was GOOD. Fresh, hot, crispy Chicken Katsu, fluffy rice, and that macaroni salad I came for. Exactly what I wanted after fasting all morning. The funniest part? By the time I walked out, the place was PACKED. Someone was ordering at every register and people were sitting at tables waiting for their food. Apparently everybody got their mailers yesterday. I'm just glad I had the good sense to use mine this time instead of letting another perfectly good coupon die in vain. Today, Ono Hawaiian BBQ gets a 10/10 from me. And if you've read any of my other reviews, you already know I do NOT hand out 10s like participation trophies. Fresh food. Friendly service. Clean restaurant. Great lunch. AND Buy 1, Get 1 Free? We have gone to Ono's many times in the past and have NEVER had an experience like this before. I can definitively say that we will NOT be back. We made a special trip to Ono's because my son loves spam and rice. We ordered the spam & egg plate and requested to remove the egg and have a couple extra slices of spam instead. This has never before been a problem, as the staff had happily made this accommodation, since my son doesn't like eggs of any kind. It doesn't even say "no substitutions" anywhere on the menu. This time, however, the manager, Robert, said he could only remove the egg, but would not give us even one slice of spam extra, and that it would be full price. Mind you, this is a $15 plate, so he was saying we could have two (2) slices of Spam and some rice for $15. This had never been the case before, and I pointed that out. He wouldn't budge, and insisted I pay full price. In short, we walked out and went to the local L&L Hawaiian BBQ, which had the same exact portion size, substituted the egg without question for a total of five (5) slices of spam, and cost much less on top of it. This isn't my favorite Hawaiian food, but it satisfies the craving. I had the white fish and BBQ chicken meal. It was great. I love the tartar sauce. The service was quick, even though I was told the fish would take an extra 8 min or so to cook. The ambiance was packed, with lots of take out orders. Pretty good Hawaiian food and the portions are sizable too. Chicken katsu was crispy enough, bbq beef was not too tough, and the bbq chicken was flavorful too. The sauces are on the side so don't forget those. I like their Mac so I substitute all mac instead of rice if you're a fan of that. Came into the store around 6 PM on a Sunday very busy almost all the tables inside were taken, employees did a great job at getting all the food out quick! There was at least 5 people in front of me and I got my order in less than 10 min. Portions were hefty! But there was a cup and water on the floor at the table next to us and it never got picked up while we ate. Other than that, the place was clean and the food was good. Maybe they should've stacked the menu 2 on top and 2 on bottom? Everything tasted delicious and it was exactly what I wanted. I loved the variety of having 3 proteins and the self-service sauce bar for extra teriyaki sauce. CUSTOMER SERVICE (4/5): I came at dinner time on a weekday @ 6pm and there were a lot of orders ahead of me. It took about 20 minutes until my TO GO order of 1 entree was ready. Again, they had a dinner rush and the kitchen seemed to be making things QUICK. Keep up the great work! CLEANLINESS (3/5): The table I was sitting at to wait for my to go order had a cup of water spilled on top and for the 20 minutes I was waiting for my food, I didn't see anyone clean any of the tables. Ono La Habra makes good Hawaiian food with a welcoming vibe. Two consistent problems that I have encountered over the years that can easily be fixed: 1) ratio of spam meat to rice (way too much rice, which I end up throwing away and the spam slice is very thin) & 2) wait time is very disappointing - 20+ minutes for each order. It's one thing if I make large orders and have to wait. I usually just order 2 spam masubis and plate combo. I have ordered the same things since the place opened. It just takes too long for the orders. Why do I keep coming back? Because the food is actually good. If they would only fix a few setbacks, this place would easily earn a 5-star rating. Btw, this place is always clean. That is very much appreciated, especially now a days with our pandemic. I look forward to some improvements. I came in last night 11/10 around 6:30pm It's been a while since I've tried Ono, my expectations were not high. When I got to the counter, I asked about the Island Fire Chicken. I almost risked ordering it, but I talked it out with Rosita and went with the BBQ Mix. She was patient with me and very helpful with the ordering process. I never knew you could sub your veggies for a little extra rice. The BBQ mix was delicious. Crab Ragoons - IMO need some sweet n sour to pair with, but very good. Young Coconut - Always a treat for me. Drank one while I waited. Overall Rosita was sweet and accommodating. She was also the one welcoming guests as they arrived.
