I went for a hair styling appointment with Lady. She was 5-6 minutes late. I wanted wavy hair at the bottom and backcombing with volume at the top. She did the waves part nicely, but she couldn't do the top part. I was expecting that she will do the tease + holding spray. But she just teased the hair didn't apply any spray and tried putting the clip directly which made my hair look ridiculous. She only applied the spray at the other parts of my hair but I was surprised she didn't at the top. I used to come here for years and see Lauren F. She was wonderful and I never had an issue. After she left I have had multiple bad experiences. about 2 years ago I went to a someone I had not seen before, Kylee J. She did a cut and color for me. Color was fine but the cut... it was HORRIBLE. I asked for no layers and just a blunt straight across cut. I didn't look at it before I left. Got home and my partner asked me what the heck happened. on one side of my head it was like she started to do layers, remembered I didn't want them and left it. I ended up having to cut about 7-8 inches off to fix this. The worst part...ONYX did not give me a refund and offered me to come back to have someone else fix it. Wait...hold on that wasn't the worst part. I had Venmo'd Kylee 30.00 for her tip and she didn't even think to return it, nor did the salon think to make her. I did go back a few times (not to Kylee) as I wanted to believe it was just a bad day for one of their stylists. In the last 4 years I have been cancelled on multiple times at the last minute. Today it happened again for the final time. I know people get sick but it happens way too much and it is always on the weekend. I guess I can't blame them, it's like staying in a bad relationship and expecting outcomes to change. Time for me to make the change and move on! read more

Beautiful salon and really friendly service! I'm not the type who usually goes to fancy salons to cut hair but I heard great things about this place through Yelp and discovered that they had a hair model service! Usually at hair modeling places, there's an instructor overseeing the apprentice but I went during their non-modeling hours, since my stylist offered to do it after her scheduled hours. But basically you can get a free haircut through the apprentices! You can sign up through their website or call in to make an appointment. I got placed with Rebeca Ilie and she was awesome! She's super friendly and is really passionate about what she does. I was a little nervous to starting out because I was chopping off 14 inches of hair to donate and the last time I hacked off that much hair, I was not so happy with the results (although that was because the stylist did not do as I asked). Still, I decided to put my trust into Rebeca and let her do what she wanted after I showed her examples of what I liked....and Rebeca did a wonderful job! I liked my hair and I got plenty of compliments on it. :) Going as a model, you get the same treatment as if you were a normal customer, but it may just take a bit longer (I think it took an hour and a half for me). You still get shampooed, cut, hair dry, and styled! :) It's pretty awesome and really relaxing. Rebeca even goes as far as to working after her shift and on days she usually has off. She also told me that I could come back if I wanted any other changes or coloring. Definitely book Rebeca while she's an apprentice if you want to hair model (color and/or cut) for her, she may be on the floor soon! But for now, she's constantly looking for models to practice on! I've been going here for a couple years now. It was tough finding someone I trusted with my hair when I first moved to the bay. Decided to check out this salon and was referred to Christina when I said I wanted color. Since then she has taken me so many places. Platinum blond, added some purple and tourqoise then decided to shave my sides in a modified Mohawk and now I gave up the blond to go all color. Christina is amazing and is absolutely an artist. This is a one star review for Lady (person who cut my hair), not for Onyx Salon! The manager Maria and the young man at the front desk are very pleasant! I will be back to the salon in the future. Yesterday I had the most awkward hair service experience with Lady. I had my hair cut from $40-$200, this particular one is $74. I usually know what I am expecting. Start off with the clumsiest hair wash: water went in my back my ear, and she scratched me with her long nails. Didn't make an apology and told me to go back to the station after wash. Hair cut: here is what got really weird! I sat down took off my glasses so we can start the hair cut (can't see very well without them). There was a lovely hair stylist about to be finish with someone's hair, they kept saying how cute and wonderful the cut was, so naturally I would like to have a look. I asked politely if I could put my glasses back on to look at her hair, Lady coldly told me to don't bother looking because it was not my hair??? I know that, but what does a look have anything to do with my hair? In the midst of cutting my hair( I went in to have my hair cut 3 inch shorter), I again told her politely to please just make sure is even( the only request I made!) not too much to ask I thought? WRONG, Lady stopped everything she was doing, look at me and said " you are making me uncomfortable because you don't know what I am doing" WTH??? At this point I lost it with her, but I kept my cool because I just want to get it done and leave! I was originally going to to purchase some hair products from Onyx after the cut, but I just can't say another word to her anymore. Sadly I didn't notice it at the salon after she styled my hair but I did notice it after its first wash.. I could not be happier with the recommendation. Bella counseled me on the difference between a Keratin Treatment, which I have had many times before, and a Brazilian Blowout. As a guy, most of the time you don't spend anything over $15-$20 for a haircut... that is, until you get the Onyx experience. Then you are spoiled for life. This is coming from a guy who has never spent over $20 a haircut (that was including tip) in my adult life, until I came here! Let me give you a few reasons why it is well worth the money. First off- online booking. This is SUCH a time-saver and such a quick in-n-out that I am able to get haircuts on the go, especially with my crazy work schedule, this alone is a HUGE plus for me to be able to book something last minute and pop in quickly for a haircut. Their location is super easy to get to and there's always parking around there (including a large lot about two blocks away). Also their hours are fantastic and they are open quite late which is convenient. I had the pleasure of getting my hair cut today from Pamela, one of the co-owners of the salon and the experience was nothing short of extraordinary, she took the time to carefully cut my hair with scissors and seriously gave me the best haircut of my life to-date. She was easy to talk to and super polite and accommodating the entire time, even pouring me a beverage- how many owners of salons would still be cutting hair and meeting customers? This is the first I've seen! It's incredibly awesome to have her cut my hair and it was an honor!! Don't get me wrong, I usually get Armando and some of the other stylists, but Pamela seriously gave me the full on high quality service usually reserved for celebrities... and this is for men's hair too! I have never seen so much attention paid to my hair, it was blush-worthy. Absolutely an incredible salon that is run like a well-oiled machine. It's always packed but check online for appointments and you will NOT regret coming here. I have been going to Onxy Salon for a little over a year now. Derek is legit. He is an artist I have curly fine hair and he always manages to get my hair cut on point. He has great attention to detail and you can tell that he is a perfectionist. In addition, he is a great colorist. He has been doing platinum blond on me which I think is the most difficult hair color. My hair always comes out soft and still manages to keep the curl. On top of that he is hilarious! Been coming to Onyx Salon in Burlingame since before the pandemic. Started here as a "model" where you're working with an associate stylist who is learning the salon's protocols and style. You get great services for VERY low prices - but you have to be flexible to fit into their schedule. That's how I met Lady. She started as an associate and is now a stylist at Onyx. Lady really listens to your needs and gives options as to what can be done. She's done my sassy A-line haircut and highlights - which my husband loves! Lady got my hair in shape in advance of a couple of major events, and I always get compliments. You can book online, which is nice, but was disappointing that blow-out isn't included in their color treatment. But, if you'revcalling or booking online and need a stylist at Onyx - look for Lady. read more

Got my hair done today by Lexi! I am still amazed by what a great job she did with my hair. She literally transformed it into a masterpiece perfection with that ashy brown balayage. Got there at 5 and left almost at 9.... I mean this girl really took her time to make sure my hair came out just right. She made sure that I didn't have the uneven copper styled balayage that I have gotten before. Before my actual appointment, I had to go in for a consultation to see what we would do and then breakdown of the prices. Not many places do that and It honestly really helps not just you out but your stylist as well. This helped me out a lot because I already somewhat knew what the process would be like. No surprises. Lexi is not only gentle with your hair but she's very observant and makes great suggestions while making sure your satisfied with what you get. She really transformed my terrible hair and gave me something light like I had wanted. I mean honestly the pictures should tell you guys all about her. I've never had my hair cut in the Bay Area before and I was really nervous that I won't be able to find a reliable, friendly place!! I went into for color and cut and she did my hair as close as the pictures I've shown her. Really great hair wash. I fell asleep... lol (that's a good sign) What I really admired about my stylist was the fact that she admitted wanting to tone my hair more as it did not turned out truly the way she wanted. I really appreciated the dedication. She didn't make me feel like I was just another "double booking" client and I had a very pleasant experience. My only suggestion is that they could definitely improve on the bathroom presentation. Looks kinda like a storage room. Update: since posting this review, the manager reached out to me. She was really nice and listened to my concerns. she tried to resolve the issue the best she could (although we can't bring back my hair), so I appreciate her customer service. As for my hair now, I am patchy :(. And the color has faded back to what it was before I went in for the second round so they could "fix it"...so I basically went in just to lose some hair. Pretty upsetting but I am glad it is just hair, and saying some prayers it will grow back with the help of some biotin and l-lysine. I am living in a hair nightmare right now... I had long beautiful blonde hair. A few weeks ago I noticed a few grey hairs near my 27th birthday. I had driven past Onyx salon and since they have flexible hours I figured I'd give them a shot. I wanted to go back to dark hair (I've had my natural hair now for a few years) and I met with Jennifer for a consult. She was nice, and said I should try Demi-permanent color. I told her it washes out on my hair but she insisted I try it again. Surprise...it washed out and was really ashy within 2 weeks..kept getting on my towels and all over the shower. They were nice enough to let me come back to touch it up and they used Demi, again. This time They seemed super rushed, it was all over my scalp...like ALL over. I had some on my neck...I had a dot on the top of my forehead. It was horrible. And my entire scalp was purple. I get it, you're fitting me in and rushing...but I've had my hair done many times and there is no reason my entire scalp and my neck and forehead should be purple. Now..I've washed it and I'm scrubbing and I have hair coming out. Idk if it's from the dye being on my scalp or going in too soon...but I'm mortified. My scalp is still purple, my hair is coming out...I will never go back to this place. Spend your money somewhere that takes time with their clients and doesn't rush through. read more

I've been getting a variety of cuts with Yasamine, and she does my balayage. Not only does the cut and color look amazing when I leave the salon, but even when I do a half-hearted job at styling it it just falls wonderfully. And the color lasts for a long time (2-3 months for me, which is saying a lot for my blond on dark brown hair). I went in for a consultation first with Devlin. After going to a different salon in Burlingame, I was hesitant to dye my hair again because my first experience was not very good. They are really professional here at Onyx and I really liked my result. I also appreciated Devlin's willingness to change my toner if I did not end up liking it (but I did!). It was more pricey than the first place I went to, but if I learned anything from this experience it is: do not settle for a place not as good because of the price. Having the consultation was helpful because it gave me a guideline for how much it would cost, and Devlin gave me the option of hearing a cheaper alternative as well. She put a lot of care into her work and I will definitely go back again when I choose to do something else with my hair. I love my result! read more

This review is for (the fabulous, amazing, hair master) CHRISTINA PEREZ. Back story in a nutshell: About 5 months ago I decided that I wanted vibrant, mermaid/my little pony ombre hair. I chose a top rated salon in SF, got my appointment and the results were pretty, but quite a letdown because the outcome wasn't what i wanted. It was incredibly expensive ($800) and my hair ended up looking just alright but not nearly vibrant enough! I then went to over 5 different salons to get consultations with multiple stylists only for them to tell me that "It can't be done, You'll need extensions for what you want, everything will blend together, your hair is too dark to lift to a white blonde, Asian hair is too difficult, your hair will melt off from the damage etc. etc. blah blah." I wasn't going to give up so fast. I WAS GOING TO GET MY DREAM HAIR! I just didn't know where! I work in Burlingame so I was moping and walking around during a break that week and popped into Therapy (the clothing store) One of the associates recommended her sister who was a stylist working right down the street. Well, that's convenient! I got a consultation and as soon as I met Christina i knew she was THE ONE. She is funny, personable, clear, concise, educated and extremely knowledgeable with hair types and the color process. She was almost too confident that I couldn't really believe my ears. Most importantly she told me the magic words, "Yes! It's completely achievable!" I made my appointment and left Onyx with better results than I could have imagined. The prices were reasonable. Not only did my hair NOT melt off and it's still thick and volumized but I got the best color of my entire life. Christina used 5 different shades of purples and pinks and they blend so beautifully. I am a true fan of Christina Perez and will follow her to the ends of the earth. UPDATE-I had to move from the bay area down to Los Angeles for a new job. I came in yesterday for a much needed haircut. My hair stylist was Armondo. The results of it were completely different than I started with and not at all what I expected. It didn't look as bad when he finished, but then I went home and took a second look, I was embarrassed to go out, so I put a hat on. He even missed some very obvious spots on the cut that needed to be razored on my side and in the back. He did not turn me around like most hair stylists do to even show me how the back turned out. About every 3 minutes towards the end he was looking at his watch to make sure he wouldn't be late for his next customer, so then he ended up rushing on my cut, which was clearly obvious with the end result and the fact that he missed so many spots. I came in for a cut and to get the same style in the end, but left with an ugly bob cut. I'm always pretty scared to start with a new stylist, but after reading the reviews, I was pretty confident that this would be my new salon, that is absolutely not the case. read more

Bad Balayage Experience! I requested a consultation and was set up with Armando, a signature stylist. I showed him pics of what I was looking for, a natural/dark brown/caramel balayage. He was very confident that he could make it all happen and I trusted him so I made an appointment. When I came in for my appointment, I again showed him the pics of what I was looking for to confirm and he was again confident he knew what colors he needed to mix to achieve the look I wanted. So he started adding color and foils to my hair. Once my hair was washed, toned, re washed, blow dried: -I notice uneven color, some strands are thicker than other -blonde/ light color, the complete opposite of what I requested -unless I flipped my hair around, I couldn't even notice the color, it looked like I had nothing done! Armando was nice enough to add another darker toner, wash, and blow dry my hair again. This made the blonde a bit darker but still nothing like the pics I had shown him. I've curled my hair to see the color and I can barely tell that it's there. After spending $260, I didn't expect this. Now when I wash my hair, it is tangled and a frizz ball. I need to spend at least 20 mins combing my hair out and I'm pulling soo much hair out! I'm giving 2 stars because Armando was nice enough to stay late to add another toner and re wash and blow dry my hair. Pics attached. This review goes solely for Yasamine, I highly recommend her! Came into this salon May of 2016 to get an ombre on my hair. The last time I had my hair done in a salon in Daly City, the stylist totally ruined my hair and dyed my hair a different color than what I wanted...so coming to a new salon to get an ombre on my hair made me totally nervous that something bad would happen again! Fortunately! Yasamine was very helpful in my consultation for my ombre, she let me know that her main concern was keeping my hair healthy, but also making it looks as good as possible. She made me feel confident that she would do a good job on my hair. The whole ombre took about 4 hours, Yasamine is very social and friendly, so the 4 hours went by very fast. When my hair was finished I was very satisifed of my hair. I received a lot of compliments on my hair and was happy with how evenly and bright she was made my ombre, while keeping my hair still healthy. I only knocked off one star because I do feel that this place is a bit expensive. I was told my ombre would cost me about $300, but it ended up being almost close to $400... Not sure as to exactly why, I was so happy with my hair at the moment that I didn't mind paying that much until later on when I looked at my receipt. Onyx does a very good job and will definitely make your hair look amazing. Highly recommend Yasamine, but just know that this place is a bit pricey if you're ballin on a budget like me! read more
