Good for breakfast I happened to be in Woodley Park and was in the mood for coffee before attending a training. Thanks to Yelp, I found Open City, which was on my way to where I needed to be and close to the metro. Plus, Open City describes itself as a Coffee Shop, Wine Bar, and Diner. The description alone has two of my favorite things, so I just had to go in. It was meant to be. Open City utilizes its space fairly well and I was surprised on how much seating they actually have. They have a patio area which is heated during the cold, regular sitting area, and a bar area. Guests need to wait to be seated but if you're just ordering coffee or grabbing something to go like I was, you can go to a separate line. I ordered a Mocha after deciding to splurge on something more then just their house coffee. While waiting for my coffee, I looked over their menu as well as their display case with all of their pastries. Everything looked tasty- which is a reason I need to come back. My Mocha was delicious and well made. The baristas take time to make it, so don't stop here if you're in a rush. Everyone was friendly too. Open City Definitely have a neighborhood vibe and seem to know their regulars, from what I observed. Its the kind of place you can go to during the week for a quick bite or the weekend to enjoy a leisurely brunch. I definitely want to come back and try their food. read more

Open City serves up one of the better Greek salads I've had in awhile. It's huge, with fresh ingredients and defaults to dressing on the side. All things I'm quite partial to. Sadly, it took about half an hour for my salad to actually arrive... mostly because the order was seemingly forgotten. Awesome. In the meanwhile, I had a lovely De Koninck and caught up on some much-belated reading. Points won back for not including said De Koninck in the final tab. I recognize that it was an unexpectedly nice gesture for waiting around for so long for my salad. Still, they didn't -have- to. And I really respect that kind of attitude for making things right. This diner-meets-cafe-meets-bar is a pleasant, chill daytime spot with free wifi, tasty sandwiches and salads and the like, and a homey neighborhood feel. It's mostly table seating, so it doesn't really lend itself to sitting and working all day like its sister restaurant Tryst, but it's quite comfortable for a long hangout meal with friends or by yourself. The limited bar seating is often home to a number of people there alone. Whether you want to make use of the espresso bar or the cocktail list, Open City's got you covered. I've never had their brunch, but can confirm that it exists! The bartenders I've encountered have been above-average in genuine friendliness, and haven't judged me for ordering an Old Fashioned at 2pm or a pot of tea at 8pm. Management tried really hard to make up for what I documented in my last review, so I feel like I owe them one more star. And now that I know that they care about me, I'll probably be more inclined to go again and again and again - I'm a narcissist like that. The service the second time around was spot on. The host acknowledge us promptly. He was kind of awkward looking and had a really weird gait but he seemed genuinely/literally concerned about us getting seated as efficiently as possible. Our waiter was also very attentive and friendly, leading me to believe that my last experience was probably an isolated occurrence. The food is where they stumbled this time. The bacon and artichoke dip was too thick and was served with potato chips (oil. overload. beep. beep. boop.). My ribs were a little dry and the sauce could have used some honey. The worst offense was the mac and cheese though. I probably should have taken a picture because it was almost comical. It came scooped unceremoniously on a plate, heaped onto one side with some random pieces scattered about. It was also upside down (the melty parts were on the bottom) and somehow retained the shape of whatever vessel it was cooked in. If I met the cook who did that, I would've been like, "You mad bro?" To top things off, it was this weird beige color and lacked any flavor whatsoever. So. Post volume II in my Open City saga, I'm still waiting for them to get everything right. read more

If you like bland food and disinterested service you should try this place. Over the course of the last 6 weeks I have frequented this place mainly for coffee and yogurt in the am. They always have new people working behind the counter, No real management over seeing the operation. This mornings new person seemed to know nothing about how too do his job, he kept wiping his eyes and yawning while handling other peoples food. He charged me the wrong amount and when I asked what had changed he was both rude and offensive as became angry that I would ask the question seeing the mistake was in my favor, which was beside the point and who knew. Then this rude unfit excuse of a person got even with me by charging me for a cup of yogurt but when I got back my office I found that it was only a table spoon of yogurt in the container. HaHa, this is not a restaurant, it is somebody's idea of a profit center, nothing more, nothing less, never again... This place is one of the main reasons why I venture to Woodley Park. Loves: + Cute dining areas (both indoor & outdoor) + Good selection and value for food + The Royale ($13) is the breakfast sampler to get + Side of sweet potato fries ($3) are plentiful Not so love: - Slow...which is fine, except when guests who have arrived after you get seated before you? - Pass on the Chai waffle ($8.75) - Chilly enough inside that if you don't wear a sweater underneath your coat, then you're wearing your coat inside. The patio looks pretty sweet and I would be open to coming back in the summer to brunch in the sun. However, my two recent visits have been alright. Like some of the recent reviews, I wish I could give Open City 3.5 stars, alas the Yelp system (wisely) doesn't allow that for rankings. My rationale is while the quality and variety of food, drinks, and desserts (and the atmosphere/neighborhood) are all spot-on, the service left MUCH to be desired. I popped in with my mom for a quick weekday lunch (so they weren't at all busy) - taking care of some errands and checking off a long-awaited bookmark to eat at Open City - check! Great cafe atmosphere and awesome covered seating area 'al fresco.' We each ordered one of their specialty coffees (including the awesome 'chaipuccino'), and we were delighted by the presentation (with the little animal crackers) and the tastiness of the drinks. Mom ordered a lamb burger with which she was pleased, and I tried their take on huevos rancheros. I was definitely pleased with their huevos, including their use of corn tortillas. I also enjoyed the chipotle sauce that was served alongside the dish. As for the service, I'm not sure what the deal was, but our waitress didn't seem to have much interest in refilling waters, clearing plates, or even taking our order. It took an unreasonable amount of time for her to take care of us, and the kicker is that it wasn't even a busy time at OC - which gives me pause when considering coming here on a weekend morning for breakfast. That said, OC is a bit out of my way, but if I'm in the area, their menu and atmosphere, plus awesome coffee, would have me returning and hoping for better service! read more

Open City is a fantastic spot; it is in a fun neighborhood, easily walkable to Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights, Dupont, Woodley, Cleveland Park and more. The coffee and tea selection is top notch and they have beer, wine and other bar items as well. The service is always friendly, not overbearing (sometimes mildly inattentive, but still friendly) and the atmosphere is casual. Their desserts are solid and some of them are excellent (this thing that looks like a blown up Swiss Roll is delicious). I have had breakfast here once or twice and always enjoyed it, but the Lunch/Dinner menu is a bit more varied and imaginative. You may look at their lunch menu and think that they offer too much to do it all well, but I have yet to have something I dislike. Their pizzas are very good (the 5 cheese is my favorite) and their BBQ chicken sandwich is excellent. (They use coffee grounds in the BBQ sauce). They have this sandwich called the Crusty that is in a pie crust; it is absolutely delicious. NOTE: When ordering the side salad, be careful if you are the type of person who just wants leafy greens, tomatoes and little else, there are a few things in this salad that may throw you. Lastly, their pineapple ice tea deserves a specific mention because it is excellent; goes well with everything on the lunch menu and is perfect during the summer. read more

Open city is a really great place to eat in Washington DC for breakfast lunch or dinner. I have a group of friends that come here to eat every time that they're in Washington DC. A group of friends that I was with said that they wanted to take me here for dinner. From the outside open city doesn't look like much there's outdoor seating and it's on the corner of the street. Parking is a pain in the but it's all street parking there is no sidewalks. Once we got inside the place was packed. The bar area was filled all of the seats were taken the only place that we could sit was in the sunroom. The sunroom had windows all over but there was walls going around the entire room. When I got to my seat I put my hand on the table and I noticed the wood table was extremely warm. I couldn't figure out why the table was warm I thought that they had heated tables or something. I looked up and they had heat lamps coming down from the ceiling to warm you up during the wintertime. Our server Elliott was awesome. He was very pleasant and was very knowledgeable of the menu. I was freezing and just wanted a couple black tea and Elliott had a bunch of different T recommendations for me. The food here is pretty much all scratch made or homemade. The menu is pretty simple. Our waiter Elliott did tell me that a lot of people come here for breakfast. I noticed when we walked in that there was a whole display case filled with donuts cakes and other homemade baked goods. We ended up getting an appetizer of some sort of mushroom pizza. I don't like mushrooms but I tried anyway and it was pretty good. There is a lot of vegetarian options on their menu. If you know somebody that is a vegetarian open city is probably a really good place to take them. I ended up getting a cheeseburger with each New York cheddar bacon and chipotle mayo on the side. The burger was very good. I wanted to eat the whole entire burger but I couldn't I was too full. Everybody that I was with ordered something different everybody also said that they really enjoyed what they were eating. Overall open city is definitely a place that I'm coming back to when I'm in Washington DC. The prices here are reasonable and the food is great. If you are in Washington DC or around the area I highly recommend coming to open city. This place is definitely a hidden gem! While looking for a brunch spot after checking out of our hotel on a busy Sunday afternoon with no reservation in hand, we wandered and found this place. Although crowded, our party of 3 was quickly seated in about 20min. Service was prompt and efficient. Loved the variety of the menu and the atmosphere was very welcoming. The quintessential touches like the animal crackers that came with my frozen chai was an unexpected surprise yet well received. I ordered the Royale, which is pretty much a full breakfast entree with all the brunch fixings you could imagine (eggs, choice of meat, hash, grits, pancakes). It was quite delicious! I adore Open City for a few reasons: First, I love breakfast anytime, and I haven't found too many places that can make this happen. Second, I love how chill it is. Servers are usually really friendly and are perfectly happy to let you hang out at your table and read, talk, be on your laptop, or whatever. There's also always a interesting media mix going on. One afternoon featured "Walk the Line" playing on the large flat-screen behind the bar while hiphop and R&B hits from my middle school days played over the sound system. I love that you can come in for a cozy meal all dressed up to go out later or be 100% casual, just wanting a nice mug of chai, and you don't feel uncomfortable either way. It's got a bit of a crunchy feel - read: diversely attired waitstaff and not the cleanest table you've ever dined at, but a menu that always satisfies and a cool vibe allows me to overlook and even embrace that stuff. read more

People who live in NW DC seem to really like Open City and when I was living in Mt Pleasant, I was a fan of Tryst (their sister location in Adams Morgan). However, since moving to Capitol Hill, I think I only wanted to be a fan of Tryst. It seemed to be the cool thing to do. Same with Open City. The location is perfect being just a few blocks away from the Woodley Park Metro and the space is large and service good. However, the food is just sub par. I've never been wowed and my ham, cheese, egg breakfast sandwich wasn't so bland! I only go here for meetings if they insist. read more

Fun and exciting, this place is trendy personified. But more than just a passing fad, there are some seriously good eats here. The waits are a bit long, but that's the price of success! For brunch one day I got the Beach Drive ($8.50) with a side of quinoa ($3). Really good. The tanginess of the chicken salad complemented perfectly the sweetness of the raisins and dried cranberries. A perfect mix of flavours and textures, with soft innards and crunchy nuts and celery, it's basically the perfect combination. Add an optional side of quinoa with its warm and earthy flavor, and you've got a a power-packed meal to start your "I just have to finish this report on Saturday" meal. I've also been here for dinner, where I ordered the Salmon & Couscous ($18). A juicy salmon portion on a bed of grilled shrimp and herby couscous, the seafood is well supported with almonds and some sweet beat salsa. The chefs here seem to pick the right complements to dishes, and it really shows. Beyond that, the lively atmosphere is hands-down the other big selling point. Though the bar is small, there's a big coffee bar and copious lounge space including a patio and a fire pit to sit around. It's the perfect place for brunch or a nice meal out, though be warned since its popularity has grown a lot. Be prepared to wait 30-40 mins for dinner at peak times, and almost all day on Saturday or Sunday during for brunch/lunch. Overall, it's the best version of this kind of brunch/bar establishment. This is one of my new favorite restaurants! We brought a friend from out-of-town here because it was recommended for its Celiac-friendly (gluten-free) options, but I was extremely satisfied with my own dishes as well. It's less than a block away from the Woodley Park Metro stop, so it'd be a great place to stop after the zoo or a fun, new place to try from other places on the Red Line. The restaurant's vibe menu-wise is basically that of an upscale diner, somewhat along the lines of Silver Diner, though the decor inside is a little fancier and warmer (I definitely didn't see any chrome). There's even a nice seating area on the patio with fire pits to keep you warm. I'm not sure if this is standard or we were just lucky, but our host was a rather dapper gentleman with a bowler and handlebar mustache, which got the evening started off right. We started off, of course, with drinks, many of which are wittily-named (I had the Rosemary's Bubbly, a gin, wine, and rosemary concoction) and all of which were delicious and generously-sized. They'll also only run you about $7 or $8. After spending some time in the South, I have been on a search for hush puppies at DC restaurants, and finally found some on their appetizer menu. I'd never had hush puppies with meat in them before, and am still looking for "original" ones, but their chorizo hush puppies are one of the best things I have ever eaten. Highly recommended! For the main course I had turkey, bacon, and cheese melted within a puff pastry shell (kind of an airy calzone or huge Hot Pocket), and it was amply-sized and delicious. My Celiac friend also really enjoyed her Quinoa & Tofu Bibimbap, and the variety of options she had. Unfortunately my vegetarian girlfriend wasn't as happy with her Farmers' Market Plate--maybe they were just having an off night, but she just didn't like the way a lot of it was cooked or seasoned. They have a decent amount of other vegetarian options, so hopefully some of their others are better. We finished off the meal with their chocolate silk pie, a slice of which was actually pretty-good-sized for the three of us. It was also quite good, and there are a lot of other things I'd like to try. Overall, I loved this place. I love a good breakfast... I told my friend Jen M. "Take me to a good breakfast place, one of your favorites." She certainly did not disappoint!! I gotta say Open City was pretty damn packed when we got there around 10 AM, but that was partially our own fault. We had to wait about twenty minutes to get seated and Jen had to drive around for parking. For such a busy place, the service wasn't too bad but the wait staff were really hustling. Open City has a great variety of dishes to cater to many different tastes, whether you're going gluten-free, vegetarian or a meat lover. I had a hard time deciding between the Chai Waffles and the Red Velvet, but the Red Velvet won out, along with a side of hash browns. The Red Velvet was excellent, not too sweet and a nice rich cocoa flavor to them. I only wished the whipped butter that came along with the waffles was something more of a sweet cream cheese, it would have complimented the flavors perfectly! If I had more time I would have definitely returned to try a lunch with one of their sandwiches or soups. Warm atmosphere too. read more

I had a George Washington Carver, which I always get when I go to Tryst, so I was happy to see that one of my beloved beverages made its way to Open City. The menu had so many yummy options, that I had trouble figuring out what I wanted. I eventually settled on the CA omelette which came with a hash brown square. I had never seen hash browns in this form, but knew it would be good. My friend loved her mac and cheese and next time I would try the sweet potato pancakes (can't remember if they were a special or regular menu item) and/or one of their tempting desserts. The bill was not super expensive either. The only reason I took off a star is the hour long wait, but I wasn't too surprised coming on a Sunday. read more

This is a great place to have in the neighborhood. It can get crowded so come early or prepare to wait a bit. I really appreciate that they have vegan options and they clearly label them. One one complaint is that my friend and I ordered the tofu scramble which say it's 100% vegan, but then they serve non-vegan butter with it. I hope they look into getting vegan butter to offer customers. Vegan butter is healthier, more environmentally friendly, and better for animals than regular butter while having an extremely similar taste. Other than that, this place is perfect. read more

I can't believe I haven't written a Yelp review of this place yet. I come to Open City once a week and it feels like home even though their servers change like every 3 months or so but what can you say, DC is a transient city. I've tried almost everything on their menu, food wise, and it's all delicious. But first, coffee. I love their coffee. Their baristas really know what they're doing. Like their sibling a few blocks down, Tryst, the coffee is amazing. I love their frozen cappuccinos, lattes, cubans, espresso...everything all delicious. Their frozen chai's are good too. I also love how they give you a few animal crackers with every drink. If you ask for more crackers, they will be more than happy to bring them to you. Desserts/pastries: Really a hit or miss. Sometimes their cakes can be super stale and I send them back and then send me a replacement AND another treat of choice so they are really committed to service. I love their mixed fruit tarts ($5--pricey but they are really good and sell out quick!), their muffins, and cookies. I've had a lot of their cakes and they are just meh. I wish their chocolate croissants could have more chocolate. Food: they serve breakfast all day and when I have a hard time choosing, my go to is the Royale. It is every breakfast food you can imagine for $12.50. Their French toast has hints of orange (I don't know how but it works). I love their pizzas. I LOVE their Calvert Street pizza which comes with corn, bacon, jalapeno cheese white sauce. NOMZ. Their kids menu is also great and the prices are amazing. I would also definitely recommend the chai waffle (super interesting) and their buffalo tenders. Their BLT and sweet potato fries are pretty amazing too! They always have weekly or monthly specials that are amazing. One time they had smore's pancakes that can with graham cracker butter--amazing. And this other time they had nutella infused waffles with raspberry syrup. HEAVENLY. I just went in today and tried their sweet potato and kale pizza that came with carmelized onions, goat cheese, and mozarella and omgah I wish I could eat it everyday. The servers are wonderful but when they don't have that many customers they just all like to hang out by the bar and totally forget about you so at times I wish they were more attentive. One time I came in and realized that I lost my wallet after I had gotten my food. They told me they knew me and let me pay them back later. Open City is one place I will truly miss when I leave DC. Pretty solid brunch here! The place was pretty packed but we were able to pick up some seats at the bar- first come first serve. The cappuccino was really good- strong and flavorful. The Migas was amazing! The eggs were perfectly cooked and the black bean and chorizo salsa was amazing! Even with strong flavor you can still taste everything else. Especially the extra cheesiness cheese. Our second favorite things was the extra thing light crunchy crust. We went here for breakfast a couple of times while in DC for a teaching conference. It was really close to the Marriott we were staying at so it was super convenient. There was a huge variety of breakfast items from scrambles to bagels with salmon etc. The hashbrowns were not what I was expecting in that they were like a fried solid brick a la McDonalds kind of. I tried the Chaipuccino partially just because I liked the way the word sounded and it was way to sweet for me but I loved that it came with animal crackers... I love the semi-outdoor seating (open air, but with a roof) and would probably eat breakfast there a third time. read more

I love this diner, coffee shop, restaurant. It is right next to the Marriott and Omni hotels at the Woodley station and convenient for the nearby zoo. Their food is fantastic. They have what you think are run of the mill menu options, but many dishes have a unique twist. My grilled cheese, for example, was a cornucopia of cheese with a tangy jelly mixed in. The hot chocolate belongs in a high end spa with that hint of lavender. The space is huge. They have indoor and outdoor seating. One of the spaces indoor has a greenhouse feel so you can keep warm and enjoy the sun at the same time. Always a pleasure to dine here when I'm at a conference nearby. read more

I don't really get the hype about this place. Every time I've been there have been massive amounts of people and there has always been a wait to get in, but then once seated the food is exceptionally mediocre. The menu options are very straightforward and predictable, and the food is just "okay." You are not going to come here and be blown away by the quality of the food. Imagine hotel breakfast but twice the price. It's also not exactly a relaxing atmosphere, as the tables are all crowded together in a big clump and the noise levels are consistently high. Many people come here with their kids/strollers, but I've found it difficult to fit a stroller anywhere and the seating arrangements aren't ideal for little ones. If you're looking for brunch, there are much better options in D.C. at the same price point, where you get better bang for your buck. I think this place could be better if the menu was revamped and the space was redesigned, but for now it feels blah and outdated. read more

I am not sure **what** it is about this place, but I enjoy it. It seems like time stands still when I am here. The food is average to above average, service is no nonsense and basic. I just like the atmosphere/ambience. It always seems to be bustling with biz and they are a coffee shop/bar/restaurant/mom & pop place to go to grab something and sit. That's what I like.....the sitting/watching/listening all the while having some menu choices that are not your normal fare. And I love that they serve breakfast all day long. read more

We went in and sat down right away. I loved that. I heard that that is abnormal...so I must have gone at just the right time. I looked through the options that the menu had. From what I could tell there was a wide selection of local and domestic brews. There was a pretty nice selection of coffee based beverages as well. I was told they are known for their brunches, and it looked pretty legit. Unfortunately for me, I was only in town for the afternoon so I had to settle for getting dinner. I asked what the signature dishes were and the server didn't really help out...she said everything is good there. I asked if they had a special for the day. Nachos. I pretty much won't pass up nachos. When they came out they were piled high with beans and salsa and ground beef. We had them put a little extra guac and sour cream on it bc those were lacking a bit. We also got hummus...it wasn't amazing. The service wasn't awesome. The food had good flavor. I'm glad I went, but I think it was one of those situations where you pay for the environment. The set up made me feel like I was back in Europe again. If I'm ever in the area again, I probably won't visit that spot again...but it was worth giving a chance. read more

The Jerk Chicken sandwich was the lunch special, so I have it a try. It was really good. It's made with a slightly spicy salsa which gave it a nice kick. Definitely worth a look. One negative. Would have LOVED to give this place FIVE stars but when you go to a Diner you expect to get free refills on Coffee but with Open City having a Coffee Shop as well as being a diner, refills were $1.55. Outside of that one fact, the place was great. Got the Western Omelette and it was phenomenal, may be the best omelette I've ever had. Really Big and fluffy and filled with ingredients and aged white cheddar. The space is generous and has good music pumping through. The patio was very comfortable sense this is a low foot traffic area and was a great place to read a book and kick back. If you are staying at the Marriott or Omni (Like Me), this place is right next to a Metro stop so you can grab Breakfast on the way into DC you will NOT be disappointed!!! read more

This place is a "neighborhood gem." Service is always friendly and the food is very good. Lunch and Dinner: I like their mussels and pizza best. Their pretzel bite appetizers are awesome. The mac and cheese is a bit of a miss for me and the entrees are just ok. They do have ample *vegan* options so the cuisine is very inclusive (try the farmer's market plate or the quinoa and tofu bibimbap). Their beer selection is good and their desserts are great. They will package up most things (not the mussels, obviously) for take-out. I do wish they took reservations. The only reason I don't eat here more often is because there's always a 25-30 minute wait for a table. read more

I have been very impressed by the customer service at Open City. Since reporting my food poisoning, the management has been incredibly kind and responsive. Last night, I took them up on their offer to try Open City again with a few friends for a comped meal. As usual, the food was delicious - especially the Navy Yard sandwich. It seems like they've taken the concern about food poisoning quite seriously, and are working hard to ensure it doesn't happen again. Fingers crossed. read more

Four stars for the Pacific Chai Tea Latte. I always get it with soy milk and the chai spice is very flavorful and warming. I love how each crafted latte is accompanied with animal crackers (though, the crackers were sadly missing last time I was there... Womp womp). I've only been here for breakfast and some of the breakfast items can be hit or miss. I do like that their hashbrowns are baked into little mini loaves of golden brown goodness with hints of cheesiness. This place is packed during weekend brunch hours! read more

This is a solid place to grab brunch after a visit to the zoo. Definitely take advantage of their outdoor seating on a beautiful day. Things to try! - Pacific chai latte: I got it iced, so it was a refreshing and tasty drink. Plus, all their drinks come with animal crackers! - Hummus plate: The carrots and cucumbers had a lot of flavor and crunch on their own and worked perfectly with the hummus - Chai waffle: It was fluffy on the inside and crisp on the outside, just how I like my waffles. I only wish the chai flavor was more evident. - Hashbrown bowl: It's a simple dish, but it's a tasty, filling meal for brunch. Things to pass over.. - Arepas Benedictos: I wasn't a big fan at all. The pork was a little dry, and the corn arepas were too thick and didn't add much flavor. Although the avocado salsa was the most flavorful part of the meal, I wasn't impressed. read more

Went for breakfast and was okay. Food was solid but wait times were way too long for food and service. Service, when present, were pleasant and attentive. The real problem is that they do not have a good system in place for a rush of people. read more

I don't know WHY it took me so long to rave about this place! I've been here several times, always on a spectacularly warm and bright day! The entire neighborhood piles into this place to sit on the outside deck area and soak up the sun! First, the place gets packed for brunch, be patient and you will be sat. When the place is packed, service can be slow, but don't worry, your wait staff member didn't forget you, keeps their cool under stress, and is always pleasant. The coffee is well made, although it takes a while, and their pastries are a sin by every definition of the word! I've had the Croque Monsieur (ham and egg pan fried into a large piece of bread) with a side salad, the burger, grits, omelets and wraps from this place and everything was good. The ingredients seem fresh, the flavors are light and not weighed down, and I leave every time with a smile on my face. It's my neighborhood goto for brunch, or a spiked-warm beverage on a cold winters night! They also have a good, but small, beer selection! read more

This is a review for the counter service only. I LOVED the strawberry rhubarb pie! So many slices of that...thank you very much! I got a cup of coffee there almost every morning and the staff was fast and courteous. Im not sure about the rest of the menu or what goes on for lunch and dinner but if you just want a slice of pie or a cup of coffee or BOTH this is definitely the place to stop in. We ate here three times in 2 days. Comforting roast chicken with mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus, among other wonderful things we ate. Hard cider on tap, something very hard to come by in San Diego where I live. Staff is friendly and the music hits just the right note. I highly recommend this place!! read more

Good, solid diner food with a laid-back comfortable atmosphere makes this a regular breakfast spot. Take your time with your meal and open up your laptop or read a paper. There's an outdoor eating area which is nice, if not a bit noisy from the cross traffic of calvert and connecticut. The indoor area is just as nice, with a very open feel and good airflow. Downsides? Well, service has always been friendly, but one morning my breakfast companion and I seemed to get Houdini for a waiter. He'd disappear and reappear on the opposite side of the restaurant, or just vanish in a puff of smoke and not be seen at all. When you wait 15 minutes to pay your bill, and then only do so because you waved another waitress down - not so good. But aside from that incident, great place! read more
