Get here before the line starts! We met some friends here that swear by this place... you walk in and order your meat at the pit. I'm a fan of fatty burnt ends... so that's how I judge a pit. We ordered that, brisket, sausage and jalapeño sausage. The sides looked good so we tried the spicy corn (very good) and the tater tot casserole (which was carb heaven)! It's all worth trying. The actual brisket meat was moot and flavorful! Very good. The burnt ends were ok. And little soggy for my liking. I like the crispy but melt in your mouth burnt ends. The sausage was good. The sides were great! Try the free butter beans as well. The place was nice, rustic with a live guitarist playing at noon on a Saturday. The organization is good but they could make the line situation a little better so you don't have to wait outside in the blistering sun. Everyone was friendly. Oh My Gosh! Where do I start. You have to get here before everyone else does. When it's gone it's gone they say. You order your meat right out of the pit. Lots of selection. Then make your way to the mouth watering sides. Tote casserole hands down is the best I've ever had. Every. Single. Side. is amazing. Don't miss the desserts as well. I have tried almost everything here and you cant chose wrong. You can take the pinto beans to go but not the butter beans, so I made it a point to stay and try the beans. We normally get to go for the lake. I did not realize they had spicy ribs so watch out for that! One of my favorite classic Texas barbecue spots. They have baked beans and lima beans with ham complimentary. The moist brisket was absolutely amazing.... Everything on the menu is delicious but they do sell out around 2 p.m. sometimes so try to get there for lunch. Definitely worth stopping in if you're in the area! read more

Is it unusual to daydream about what you want to munch on for lunch during breakfast days prior? Well, I'm that guy. I literally 'pre-plan' my visits to Opie's because I've been told by my nurse significant other and my doctor to not eat so much dang red meat, boooo! Sooo *sigh*, I make my once a month visit worth it! My usual orders are as follows: Extra Moist Brisket Regular Sausage Tater Tot Casserole Green Beans All of the above menu choices are downright delicious and addicting. I'm sure all of the other items on their menu are just as tasty but I as I mentioned I pre-plan my visits so my mind is already set on what I want before I even head over. I guess I'm just dedicated that way, LOL! The restaurant is located on the corner of an intersection. You can't miss it. If you do, get your prescription glasses checked, LOL. There aren't parking stalls because they don't have a paved lot. Just park and mosey on up to the front door. You start the gauntlet off by choosing the amount of meat(s) you desire then you choose your sides as you make your way up to the cashier. Later in the day they may run out of certain food items. That's a good indicator of which items they sell most. The staff members have always been friendly and the restaurant has always been kept tidy. When you're done stuffing your face, kindly collect the remnants of your meal and leave it for them to bus, that's how they want it. I love this place. Texas Monthly Barbecue Week 2014 offer: 1/2 lb meat plate w/ 2 sides, drink, and dessert = $12!!! Walk in and all meats are showcased in an open pit - which is usually impressive and also a sign of many good things to come. Was pretty disappointed to find out that the meats are actually cooked in a different pit and transferred to this electric (I know!!!!) pit inside to keep the meats warm and to carve and serve at. Hmm...this will help explain some of my following comments. Brisket: Looked great! Had a nice charred fat ring and small pink line. Even though a fattier cut, the meat was surprisingly on the dry side. Decent smoke flavor and the fatty edge was great. Pork loin: Pink smoke ring and thin crust. Kind of bland - very dry. Had to saw through the meat. Sad, so sad. This goes back to storing the meats in the electric pit. My theory is that the meat comes off the smoke pit cooked perfectly...and then sits on the inside pit to die. I could definitely see potential, but there was a misstep somewhere along the way. Or, perhaps we just happened to go on a "bad" day. I will certainly give it another try. Meats = 3 stars Tater tot casserole: Off the charts! Certainly not diet food, but OMGood! Extra crispy tots, covered with cheese. Each bite better than the last. Spicy corn: I believe its scratch made creamed corn...a little runnier than usual...with a wonderful macerated jalapeño flavor. Spicy, creamy - hella good corn! On the house, all-you-can-eat pintos: Nothing fancy. Cooked well. Added a little S&P. To Die for Sides=5 stars!!! Peach cobbler: Not overly sweet. Flaky dough. All I needed was a scoop of ice cream. Dessert=4 stars And in true Texas style: loads of white bread, pickles, onions, and jalepenos=5 stars Customer care: Super friendly staff, great prices, generous hospitality=5 stars! My girlfriend and I were camping at Krause Springs for the weekend and having recently seen this place on an episode of the KLRU show Day Tripper I absolutely had to go. When we pulled up and parked I got out of the car and a very happy very large man looked at me and said "Be careful son, you can hurt yourself in there...." this of course made me very excited. When I walked in I noticed some guy tending a box of meat very near the door, I of course ran over to take pictures of the meat like a true food pornographer. I didn't understand the man tending the meat storage unit was there to take my order until he was like so what do you want. I selected and arsenal of meats, brisket, pork loin, sausage .. the works. Next up was a counter with a few sides behind it, I got the Jalapeno Corn and the Tater Tot Casa-role. I didn't try any of the deserts but this counter had an impressive spread of brownies and some mighty fine looking banana pudding. There is a buffet like are in the center of the restaurant that has Sauce some free Pinto Beans and all the fixins for BBQ, you know Pickles Onions and Bread. I was surprised that they offered a wheat bread option instead of your standard white thin sliced BBQ bread. I cant say it was the best BBQ I have ever eaten but it was very good. The casing on the sausage had a snap to it like I have never experienced before. Everything else was very good just not stand out or spectacular I'd but the quality of food somewhere around Rudy's quality. The sides and the BBQ sauce are the real winners here. I hate a sweet tomato/ketchup tasting BBQ sauce, I was born and raised in Texas and we don't even do BBQ sauce much. The BBQ sauce here is a oil / vinegar based sauce that is absolutely delicious. I didn't taste any sweet tomato-ness just vinegar and spices. The Tater Tot Casa-role was mind blowing good.. so good in fact I have now replicated the recipe several times at home. You cant beat Taters covered in cream of mushroom, cheese and sauteed onions. The cream corn was good also but I almost felt like it a bit too much Jalapeno and was good a excuse to give yourself an awful case of heartburn. I enjoyed eating here and if you live in or near Spicewood and don't have lots of options this place could easily become a staple. Next time your in the neighbor hood give it a shot. Rooster Sr. was here; before and today making my grand entrance to the new digs. The majority of my visits consist of weekend trips to Krause Springs. There was a simple yet catchy formula in years past for visiting the greater Spicewood area. Camp at Krause Springs Consume several 18 packs of beer between friends Swim in the chilly spring fed creek which amazingly sobers you up. Go get BBQ at Opie's Drive back across the street to the Exxon for more beer. Repeat several times We drove in today around 1:30 and found the dining area still bustling from the lunch rush. I'm glad to see the ordering ritual still in tact; despite the new building. T.K. (father in law) and I entered the doors to either the same or a remake of the pit that used to grace the entrance of the old place. As she lifted that giant lid, the smell of delicious smoke compelled us towards the baby back ribs and the brisket. The BBack ribs were remarkable. Tender, juicy, the whole package if you ask me. An amazing mixture of sweet; with a dash of spice that hit about half way through each delectable morsel. The brisket was good; but we didn't think it compared to the ribs. A few things had changed in the overall experience since my last visit. First, they used to charge a $1 for the all you can eat beans. Now days, its included in the price and you can shovel them in at will. The condiment bar located dead center in the new place is stocked with pickles, onions, jalapenos, and sliced bread with a BBQ sauce that packs a nice zing. We went to Opie's almost eight years ago, right after moving to Austin and spending the day at Krause Springs with friends. We remember the BBQ so fondly! The brisket was out of this world and there was this magical coca cola cake and we loved the whole vibe and kept that memory in our back pocket for a long time... Well, memory is a fickle thing, friends. Either Opie's *was* that good or we are completely misremembering--because we came back here this past Saturday and did not have the same experience. We arrived around 5:00 pm or so, late for BBQ yes, which could be why most of the brisket we had was dry (there was also A LOT of fat, TOO MUCH fat, on some slices). Sausage was fine, and we randomly decided on turkey, which was also nice and juicy. Sides were mostly good. The complimentary beans are nice, and we loved the tater tot casserole. The spicy corn was too runny, as was the coleslaw. Green beans were solid. No coca cola cake alas!! But the carrot cake was flavorful and moist. The tables hadn't been bussed in a while and we forgot that they don't serve alcohol. Service was mostly friendly but nobody was going out of their way--and nobody was wearing a mask (though that's to be expected in these them thar parts of Texas). Overall, we were not unhappy, but we had higher hopes and expectations. We'll be back at some point, but will likely stop calling Opie's our "secret favorite BBQ place." 3.5 stars, rounding down because we're a bit bitter. read more

Deco was not bad but ecstatically, I would give it a 3/10 as stocking printer paper with tape on the door/walls is a bit tacky. Food, it's not bad but would I spend $30 on a lbs of ribs, 1/2 sausage link, small slice of meat and two small sides. The blackberry cobbler was great. Would I drive to that place. Brisket was delicious. The jalapeño sausage has a nice kick to it. My husband said it's some of the best barbecue he's had in a while. This is definitely not the best bbq place in Texas, I would say, somewhere below average. All meat is kinda plain and flavorless. Turkey seamed just like a boiled meet, the same was with pork loin. Brisket had lots of fat on it, even though we ask for a lean piece and they promised to give us a lean one. But probably brisket was the best of all three meats that we tried, even though half of it was fat. To be honest I didn't even think that bbq can be bad. The salads are fine and they have whole wheat bread option. If you're in the area better go to "All Good BBQ" it's in 71 towards Austin. So me and my husband where really disappointed with the place. I came in for a brisket sandwich, no sides, no drinks. Let's just say I really wish I would have ordered some sides and a drink! The brisket itself was plain Jane, slightly overcooked which gave it the texture of roast beef and had zero flavor. Which makes me very sad to report because I love Texas barbecue and I've passed by Opie's at least 1000 times, I've just never been here till now. Let's just say my 1st visit made an unpleasant dent in my Friday afternoon and my appetite. I don't normally put barbecue sauce on brisket but Opie's brisket NEEDS IT and I mean it desperately needs the barbecue sauce! And they have good sauce. The staff was super friendly and the restaurant itself was really clean and inviting. Be your own judge, but i more than likely will not be back nor recommending it to others. :( read more

We are bbq connoisseurs having tried it all over Texas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia and the Carolina's. We just relocated to Spicewood from Austin and began tasting the local places. When we walking in this place the warmer is right out front and the smell is so amazing. We selected brisket, ribs, jalapeño cheddar sausage and regular sausage. The sides were potato salad and coleslaw along with their sauces and pickles. Upon first bite of the brisket it was clear this was going to be our new place. The smoke flavor on the meat was just incredible and went really nicely with the sides. Jalapeño cheddar sausage is amazing with some pickles and the ribs are super tender. Like many BBQ places in Central Texas, Opie's is a one-of-a-kind experience. That starts from the moment you enter and stays with you until the moment you leave. First challenge is finding the entrance. There are lots of side doors near ample parking, but none are entrances. I'm guessing they're all fire exits in case there's a pit fire. First sign at the front door is "Absolutely no butter beans to go". Sounds like a silly rule to me. I guess they're either that good, or else there are no to-go containers. And they're tired of mopping to avoid that "stepped on baby poop" trail out the front door as people try to carry them out in their hands. Immediately upon entering, you're faced with an open pit of BBQ. You tell them your meat, moistness, and amount, and they carve and platter it. Know that the weight is only approximate, and tends to run high. Next station, please. If you're buying brisket, you might be a bit concerned at this point staring at a slab of unsliced meatstuff. That is, until you meet the lady with the electric carving knife, who slices your brisket into somewhat edible slices. If you were expecting thin sliced, guess again. I didn't get a chance to tell her because she was slicing before I got there. That, and I've learned the hard way you don't argue with a lady with an electric knife. Next station. Time to pay. Here's where you find your half pound of brisket is a bit on the heavy side. Hope you weren't counting pennies. Fortunately, they do take all sorts of plastic here. You can get your extras at a station past the register. Things that look like onions and pickles. You stare at what looks like butter beans in a big cauldron. You remember that first sign. You take your brisket roll and run. Fade to black. Hope you enjoyed your Opie's experience. (P.S. The brisket is quite good, but very peppery.) read more

Came here for dinner about 4:45 and they were already out of brisket, chicken, turkey and low on most other meats. We decided to try what was left. OMG, the sausage, the sweet & spicy ribs plus St. Louis ribs were amazing. A slight tug on the ribs and the tender meat fell off the bone. The craisan almond slaw was absolutely the best slaw I've ever had. Don't even get me started on the tater tot casserole. A melt in your mouth creamy potato, cheese casserole with crunchy fried onions. Not enough words. Good pinto beans and potato salad. We indulged in the blackberry cobbler and a cherry cobbler. ..simply delicious. We stopped eating them to take home and finish off with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. I'm giving this two stars because the meat was decent enough for a barbecue place. The turkey was pretty good and usually turkey is dry. However... It was extremely overpriced. I paid two dollars for four bites of sausage. I'm not even joking it was for little rounds for two dollars!!I I ordered that tiny amount of sausage and not much brisket and turkey. It was just about one plate full and I paid $16 for that and one side!!! The brisket was moist but it taste a bit like rubbing alcohol. The tater tot casserole was kind of gross. The positive is that they have a big bar with barbecue sauce and pickles etc. and you also get free beans but they don't let you know that until after you've ordered a bunch of sides. Sidenote...
