I am so disappointed with my experience at Orient Express. I planned a Field Trip for the students of my cooking class and their parents. I called OE two weeks prior and made a reservation with the owner for 20 kids and 16 adults which required 4 grills and 4 chefs. The next day, I drove to the restaurant to view the facility. I met with the owner's partner and confirmed my reservation. The following week, I emailed our menu selection. Plus, I drove to the restaurant again to discuss parking for the bus. The week of the event, I called the day before and confirmed our arrangements with the manager. The day of the event, we called the restaurant as we were driving over. When we arrived 15 minutes later, they were not prepared for us. They started taking orders on a predetermined menu. They served drinks to the children, then when they realized drinks were not included, they took them out of the hands of the children. They didn't have enough Hibachi chefs. Half our group was finished eating before they started cooking for the other half. Then I was told that they quoted me the wrong price. After I expressed my disappointment, they agreed to honor the price quoted. The servers seemed totally blindsided. They were clueless to what was going on. One of the chef showed that frustration in his performance, or lack of. This was definitely a top-down problem. Owners and managers should be ashamed of themselves. I used to go to and order delivery/take-out from Orient Express all the time when I lived in Vinings. I stopped going simply because I moved to Kennesaw so it's a bit of a trek. I LOVE Orient Express's hibachi experience. The food is delicious, portions are large, chefs are entertaining and wait staff is attentive. Never had an issue and this was always my special occasion spot. I would even order hibachi for delivery on the weekends it was that good. However, I gave it 4 stars out of 5 because when it comes to Chinese food, I've had better. I remember it being good early on and I'm very particular about my Chinese food. I used to rate it highly. But then I moved and hadn't had it in several months. When I finally visited a friend on that side of town I recommended ordering delivery from Orient Express (Chinese food). The food was completely different and quite frankly it was pretty bad. Seemed like they were using a whole new recipe or hired a whole new kitchen staff. My husband and I went here with his parents. We sat inside and ate from the Chinese food menu. Everyone enjoyed their dinner. My husband's mother and I both ordered the tangerine chicken and it was delicious. My husband ate half of mine he liked it so much! The service was good. The combination of the name, the decor, and the restaurant being actually located on the side of the railroad track really is cool. Unfortunately that is about the sole strength of this establishment. In the native circle a restaurant like Orient Express is what is referred to as a Con The Foreigners (i.e. Americans) business. The food is so-so, not necessarily bad. But the emphasis is on putting little touches that enable the restaurant to charge a premium for mediocrity--often the little touches are omitted altogether. Such is the case with Orient Express, where the restaurant's location and construction is the "little touch" itself. This is helped further by the 3-in-1 model, among which the hibachi in particular seems to be a tremendous draw for a certain type of clientle. The type that really doesn't care much about the food, sometimes nor how much it costs. To be fair the selection on the Chinese and Japanese dining room menus are not bad, if a bit pricey for the quality. The sushi is on par with those found in the numerous Tom Cathrall restaurants (Twist, Goldfish etc.)--not saying much, but tolerable. The atmosphere is energetic and pleasant. It's the hibachi that brings it down from 3 stars. Never mind that the taste is average, the expectation wasn't high to begin with. The main problems are: 1) Many of the hibachi men have no good tricks -- in fact, one performed not a single trick throughout the entire cooking process for a party of 6. This is unacceptable for a dining format that is centered on entertainment and charges a premium for it. 2) The combo hibachi entrees cost as much as $30~$60. It costs about this much to eat a steak at some of the finest steakhouses in the city (Bone's, for example). Don't do the hibachi. read more

Pretty cool how the train car is what u eat in while a real train rolls by behind the restaurant. That combined with the outdoor seating in front was adorable. Nonetheless, some may find the train annoying. They offer sushi, hibachi and chinese menus. I got the shrimp nigri as an app.& tangerine chicken/fried rice. Why was it so GOOD? I'm pretty shocked by most of the reviews on Orient Express. I'm not sure if it's because of the name or the Americanizing of Asian food, but the way I look at it, if the food is good and the experience is good, what's the problem? We had family come into town for Thanksgiving. We had a long day doing the normal Atlanta touristy stuff and my sister in law wanted to take my 6 year old nephew to his first hibachi restaurant. I've been to hibachi about 2 times in my life, so this was a new experience, but it gave me the opportunity to finally see what the Orient Express had to offer. We pulled into the parking lot, my nephew gets out and goes "We're going on the train!?!" Nothing made my heart melt more than his excitement. We walked in and I noticed that everything is sort of partitioned off into three different restaurants. I thought this was a great concept. That way, people who want to enjoy sushi or Chinese food do not need to deal with the hibachi folk. We were seated promptly and waited for our cook. When our cook came out, he focused most of his attention on our nephew, which was nice because this kept him preoccupied and interested all the way until the end of the cooking session. My husband and I ordered the shrimp and scallops combo. Our cook did a wonderful job of actually cooking the food to perfection rather than over cooking it. He had a good sense of timing in his multitasking routine. Truthfully, you've been to one hibachi place, you've been to them all. It's been years since I've tried the Chinese Food at Orient Express and I've never had the Hibachi here, so I can really only base my review on the sushi. That said - I love coming here. I love the atmosphere. The sushi bar area is nice and cozy, but my favorite part is sitting on the patio on a nice day. I came here again last night (obviously didn't sit outside in November) and as usual, the sushi was delicious. As some other reviewers stated, I tend to stick with the ones I like: *Atom Bomb *North Shore Roll *Japanese Bagel Roll.... all very delicious! I've also tried the Crunchy roll, which was very tasty. The only drawback to the restaurant is the price. It's more on the pricey side, so I usually go here for a special treat. I would probably not come here for lunch. That's a lot of money to spend on a lunch! Also, a large number of the rolls are fried, baked, smoked, or whatever, so there are not a whole lot of raw sushi rolls. The menu is HUGE, so I'm sure everyone can find something they like. I can't wait to come here in the summer time and have some wine on the patio! read more

I'd say this is really a 3.5 star review. First of all, the service was great. Our server was friendly, funny, helpful and appeared at the table at the correct times. We had the Crab Angels for an appetizer-crunchy, cheesy and delicious. I had the Eggplant in Garlic Sauce, it was excellent-we both loved it. The purple chinese eggplant had a ton of flavor and was cooked perfectly. He had a spicy chicken and steak combo, it was good but I wouldn't say it was memorable. I felt like everything tasted fresh and wasn't overly "sauced". We will definitely go back, maybe try the hibachi side next. read more

Nothing here is going to blow you out of the water. It's your standard American chinese and American Japanese fare. The atmosphere and the physical setup in the train is very cool and probably the reason I've come back here. I have mostly ordered the chinese food which has been pretty standard and good. Chicken quality is a bit better than most chinese places but sometimes the dishes can pack flavor and seasoning. The hibachi steak is actually pretty good and the typical American sushi looks and taste the same as that generic "Rusans" style sushi. read more

The restaurant is a frikin train! WTF? I have no idea why but it's awesome! There are 3 restaurants - I ate at the Chinese place. The Mongolian chicken is DELICIOUS! I'm not talking "3 AM, I'm blazed" good... I mean I dream of it at night... is that weird? Service was good too. I also ordered a grapefruit martini that I was not in love with, however, they clearly used a fresh grapefruit which I was impressed by, but I think the strong bitterness of the fresh fruit was too much for me. I dig trains. They've got a bit of romance to them. I even had a train calendar one year. So - eating inside a train automatically gets cool points from me. I know that there's other restaurants with the same theme out there, but this is definitely the only one I know about in Atlanta. They absolutely connect the whole "Orient Express" theme, as their cuisine takes you to either dining on Chinese food, sushi or the hibachi grill. Wow! Really I don't know anything else to say about this restaurant, except for wow! I mean, this was some of the most amazing sushi I have had in the last year of me eating sushi. I went here on a Friday night, and it was extremely busy. The restaurant itself, the hibachi area, as well as the sushi bar, was completely slammed. But they had two extra seats in the sushi bar so that's where we sat. The guys behind the counter were so funny and kept us on the edge of our seats all night. Watching them make all of the sushi as it was ordered was amazing. Shows you just how fresh and quick that these little rolls can come out. We also ordered some miso soup, which was amazing. Plus some sake. My suggestion for sake every single time, is warm sake. It's the best! The waiters always came and asked if we were alright. Even the guys behind the counter were constantly talking to us, making jokes, and keeping us entertained. It was one of the best sushi nights I've had in a while. Everything came out really fast, and everything tasted amazing. Volcano roll, avocado roll, and anything with salmon was amazing. Can't wait to go back and try the hibachi. But so far they get five stars because my whole experience that night was perfect. On the flipside, the parking here can be awful. It's right there where the train is on paces, so it's very little parking, for the types of crowd they get there. So if you can take uber, a taxi, or if you're going in a group of friends, just take one vehicle. Because I'm almost positive you have to park on the rocks right next to the train and it might be a tight squeeze to get in and to get out of that parking. So just be aware. Not going to give them any less stars for the parking, because it comes with the area. If you know the Vinings area, then you know how the parking is over there. Our family came here to celebrate my sons graduation. We made reservations since it was a large party (14) and were seated promptly. The food was delicious. I had the shrimp and salmon hibachi. Our chef was very entertaining! Kept my sister laughing the whole time. Only issue was the ventilation at the grill was not great. At times it was smoky. Initially we wanted to go to Chopsticks but they were closed so we went here instead. My order: Sweet and sour chicken comes with white rice $2 extra for fried rice. My boyfriend ordered a noodle dish,can't recall exactly what it was because I am not a noodle fan! My dish came out and immediately we knew the chicken was over fried and hard. AND then the KICKER ... the chicken was done using DARK MEAT???? Anyone that knows chinese food will tell you Rule# 1, you don't use dark meat to make that type of fried chicken and why? It is stringy and darn near rubbery! My boyfriend advised me to take it back but I was so hungry, however, I couldn't eat much of anything but the fried rice (the fried rice was good but who the heck would make bad fried rice) We sat there waiting for the waiter for a while to come back to our table (and we had all kind of thoughts running thru our mind while waiting, some we did express but that's for another time) when the waiter finally arrived, my boyfriend told him about the chicken and the waiter's explanation was....(RINGING THE BULLSH***BELL) "they use white meat for lunch and dark meat in the evening" and my boyfriend then asked the waiter "what sense does that make?" Love this place and the atmosphere. Waiters aren't overly friendly and I think there's a slight language barrier, but nothing crazy. I had low expectations for this place because eating at a train car is a gimmick, right? Turns out this restaurant has an entire building behind the train car facade. Another reason why I didn't expect much out of Orient Express because you can have chinese food, sushi, AND hibachi. I usually believe most restaurants should stick to one thing. Nevertheless, I was pleasantly pleased by my trip here for dinner. My boyfriend and I decided to get sushi. This isn't exactly "authentic" but they do have an impressive list of rolls. They're all variations of having shrimp tempura (it just so happens that 7 out of the 8 special rolls of the day had shrimp tempura in it), sashimi, and crab. We opted for the Kamikaze Roll, something called a Spicy Sumo Roll (I think), some uni at market price, and the Chirashi Don. The verdict: all rolls were pretty delicious - I liked the Kamikaze Roll more than the Sumo roll. Also, instead of ordering the sushi/sashimi specials, the Chirashi Don was good choice since it was actually served on a plate instead of the traditional bowl. The Chirashi had at least 3 cuts of each fish: salmon, tuna, whitefish, fatty tuna, and more. Definitely shareable. I should also mention that they also have gluten-free soy sauce by request, so rest assured, GF-eaters, you're good here. For those who like bento boxes, they do have a dinner bento box on the menu. Noodle-wise, you're limited to soba and udon, no ramen here. Service was ok. We didn't exactly have an assigned waiter/waitress, but were able to spend about as much as time as we wanted to eat and even order more food. read more

This place has been here ever since I was little! My Grandmother lived in Vining's for years and we were always supposed to go but never made it. If a place has been here that long they must be doing something right! A friend of ours said that it had really good food. When I figured out that it was this place I got very excited! Well....still excited but not what I had hoped. Service was good but food was average :( We had sushi which was tasty and my husband had their house friend rice. The best fried rice we have ever had is still at Siam Square (see review). We did sit outside but the rice seemed to get cold fast and the meat and rice was a little on the dry side. I got the salad with ginger dressing which was delish! We probably will go back and they the hibachi grill. But as far as price for sushi and Chinese food I think we'll pass. read more

i've been here for a few times during lunch and they have great lunch specials, but I've only had the sushi here. It's your standard Americanized Japanese restaurant. The sushi is pretty fresh, the service is quick, and they can get you in and out. I will say it's probably one of my favorite spots for lunch around here because of those things. I normally get their specialty rolls, lunch special (either the sashimi or the sushi). The outside is cute, it has an old train car which is charming. The patio is nice to sit out on and enjoy the weather. If you're looking for a new sushi spot to try, this place is definitely worth checking out especially if you work in the area and want something tasty and has good service. read more

Cute name, Orient Express. It represents the fact that the restaurant looks like a train car. (I hear it is, in fact, a converted train car, but I have no reliable source on that.) If so, you can see one rolling by right behind the restaurant, so this is the place for you. I should preface this by saying that I enjoy hibachi, a lot. So I have a predisposition towards enjoying that. Now, in this place, you can have Chinese, you can go to the sushi bar, or you can eat in the hibachi section. I like Chinese, love sushi, but had to do the hibachi. Awww, c'mon, you know it's fun. As such, I cannot speak for the Chinese or sushi here, but there are other reviews you can read... As hibachi places go, this was a mediocre experience. Personally, I prefer the hibachi chef to be Japanese. It makes me feel all "authentic." That was not the case for this visit. As hibachi prices go, which are usually high, this place was a bit extreme. You get a lot of food for the money, but why does it need to be this high? Some might say you are paying for the entertainment. Honestly, it wasn't that great. The chef made a big fire and tossed some clumped noodles in people's mouths. Which is not that terribly exciting, I am sorry. I've seen much better. From Japanese people... Anyway, the single most detracting point about this place was the parking. Bring a small car. There's not much, it's narrow, it's cramped, and you probably will not get a space. Which means you get to roll over the gravel and park somewhere in the back. In the dirt. After it has been raining. I can never decide what I want everytime I go to an Asian restaurant, so it's nice that they have several options (Chinese, Hibachi, Sushi & Thai) and you can pick one from each if you want. They have great lunch specials ranging from sushi rolls to sashimi to hibachi options. The only problem we came across was that there were not many vegetarian options for one of my coworkers & the waiter was not knowledgable about the vegetarian dishes they did have. I was in the mood for some sushi and this place was close to my hotel. Ordered a beer, bottle of sake, seaweed salad, salmon, fatty tuna (mp), and the Orient Express Roll. The beer and sake were tremendous. Asahi and light/cold sake are never a bad choice. The seaweed salad was old and too overloaded with sesame oil. I literally ate 3 bites and put it to the front of the table without complaining. More beer and sake... then the sushi and roll came out. I mixed up a generous portion of wasabi with my soy sauce and got into the roll. The rice was way too dense and putting a single piece in my mouth required some effort. The fish was mediocre but I finished everything. The service was weird but I don't expect much due to Covid. $90 was the total bill with tip. I walked back to my hotel a s went to bed. Around 2:30am I woke up with a very sour gut. I knew what had happened and I had to expel everything from my system before it got worse. Needless to say, I won't be coming back. read more

Another great night here. It was not too busy, staff super friendly and accommodating. The food was very tasty. I always start with egg drop soup, best in town. Then ordered the Choo Choo tray. Amazing! It had fried chicken wings, delicious crab and cheese stuffed wontons, juicy riblets, shrimp tempura, and potstickers. Must try. I had the shrimp egg foo yung with brown rice for my entree. The Hibachi Chef that we had was very engaging and food was flavorful but not over powered with salt and soy sauce. Drinks were awful. The bartender has little knowledge of mixed drinks. Great food, poor service! Upon arriving we waiting by the hostess stand for about 8 minutes before anyone came to seat us. Once we got a table we waiting another 10 before getting drinks. The place was only about half full so I'm not sure what the hold up was. The sushi however was fantastic! And it's a great atmosphere. Just don't expect anyone to be in a hurry. Great food. So different than all the other hibachi places. I also really enjoy the Chinese. Biggest gripe that had me knocking them down two stars was the service. While everyone is friendly and fun, in the hibachi area all plates were cleared far too quick. I felt as I was being rushed to leave which isn't a good feeling considering we had a party of 10+. Advice to management tell your servers to relax a little before clearing played once hibachi is complete. It would go a long way. I will keep coming, but may not do hibachi anymore. read more

The Hibachi side has never failed me. The Chinese side is the side you've got to be careful with. My gf and i picked up some food to go one day and for some reason her gut was telling her to check inside of the food. She went to open a spring roll and the first thing we see is a big ass black ear wig looking bug fall out of it it. She immediately calls the restaurant and tells them what's going on and their response was as nonchalant as it gets. I drive back to the restaurant and we go inside. We go to the front where everyone is and show them the big ass men in black bug. The first thing he says is i'm sorry for that and would you like us to take the bug out ? ( the staff doesn't care at all about whats going on and that also the craziest shit i've ever heard in my life.) All we wanted was for them to replace the meal and to take it off of the bill because they messed up. He said he can make another meal or take the bug out but he can't give a free meal, so basically it's up for her to decide. She ended up getting her money back a cursing them out. The people there have no integrity and they do not care about the customers they serve. Be careful!! Don't trust these people!!! read more

Just driving by one day and saw this place. Looked it up on yelp and much to my surprise, their rating was low. (For me). But we tried it anyway. Wow. What a nice surprise. Food was excellent. They have hibachi, sushi and Chinese. Location is cute. Restaurant idea is cool, inside of an old train car. (I haven't seen that since Victoria station restaurant.) Anyway, food was great. The house fried rice was awesome. I recommend this place for dates, anniversaries, or just plane dinner. read more
