There are two things that work for Oriental cafe: their location and the pricing of their food. They are located very conveniently in the Traville village, close to the Universities at Shady Grove. I usually come for their lunch special -- $5.95 to $6.45 for your choice of entree, white/brown/fried rice, and an egg roll. I usually get the sweet and sour chicken or general tso's chicken. The thing about this place is that there is just something lacking in the flavor of the entrees. I love general tso's and here it's just bland. The chicken is okay, the breading is okay, the sauce is okay. It's not sweet, it's not hot, it's just kind of... there. I'd have to say that of all the dishes I've tried here, only the sweet and sour chicken sauce hits the spot. If the highlight of the entire dish is the sweet sauce, its a downer to me. I usually don't eat the egg roll because the portions are very generous. Flavor wise, there is a lot of room for improvement. There are many other places I'd go get chinese, but this place just has a monopoly on me when I'm near school. The only thing I always get there are the Sweet & Sour chicken. I am not a huge fan of trying different dishes at this place because I feel that I would rather go to a way better Chinese place and try out other dishes than getting something here that I end up not liking and never ordering the same dish at another good location. It's great for Universities at Shady Grove (USG) students since the cafeteria there is a bit pricy and the food is neither great nor enough to fill your appetite. My recommendation is if you are at USG all day or in the neighborhood, stop by for their Lunch special and try it out. They are all priced between $5.95 to $6.50 or something like that. I went with soup and ended up getting a free egg roll any way...you get random free stuff depending how much you order. Anyway the reason I love this place is the hot and sour soup. My friend said it always cures him when he gets sick so when I was running a 102 temperature I tried it. It was hearty and not overly thick. 4.55 for a large. Nice that they are open late. It was a little weird because (at normal business hours) their front door was locked, but their back door was open. Well, it was ok. I had the Szechuan shrimp lunch special but it was kind of bland, The shrimp was pretty big and cooked well but the dish was just underseasoned. Having lived all over this country including cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, St. Louis and D.C, I have had my fair share of Chineese take out. But I have to say, this is truly the best Chineese food I have ever had in my life. My wife and I always eat out and were pleased when we discovered that the "Oriental Cafe" was opening soon. Excited to try the new place I suggested that since the new chineese joint was open we give it a shot. I had no idea I was about to discover the best carryout of my life. Having recently become a vegetarian I was holding out little hope, but the schezwaun(sp?) tofu was so freaking good I couldn't believe it. Even the veggie fried rice was unreal. I don't know if they put crack in it our what but my blood was itching for more. And the Egg Drop soup,OMFG! To top it all off, tonight while I was at work with the car, my wife called them to place a delivery but I guess they don't deliver yet, but once they found out that she didn't have the car to pick it up they told her they would send someone to deliver it anyway. Unreal. Not only is this the best chineese carryout I have ever had but they go and bring it to my stranded wife. Just finished the leftovers and just tried the Jasmine noodles for the first time. I can't give this place a zero - star rating or I would. The staff are rude and unfriendly, and the service is nonexistent. I ordered Hot and Sour Soup, Kung Pao Chicken, and a bubble tea. I got my soup in about 5 minutes. It was OK -- nothing special. I asked about the bubble tea, and the lady behind the counter said it was coming. Ten minutes later, I had finished my soup, but the bubble tea still hadn't come. I went to the counter to ask for a glass of water because I was pretty thirsty. I then saw the lady behind the counter hadn't even begun to make my bubble tea! This was 15 or so minutes after I had ordered and 10 minutes after she had told me the tea was coming! I had also noticed that a tray that had been sitting for a while, waiting to be delivered, was my chicken! The woman said she would bring me a cup of water. She was standing next to a sink and a stack of cups. Despite my asking several times for water, she refused to give a cup or simply pour out a cup of water. She was quite put out with my insistence on having water and became extremely surly and short with me. I told her to cancel my order and asked for my money back. I used to order from this place about 3-4 times a week. Whenever I had company I would insist we order from this place because the food is decent, fast, cheap and close to my home. However, recently I went to the restaurant in person, placed my order and asked them to deliver my order. The rude lady at the register told me the driver is busy and that my order would be ready in 8 minutes. So I waited for 35 minutes for me and my friends food. When I get home I see that my friends order is wrong and call them to complain. The woman on the phone argues that my friend didn't say this even though he orders the same thing every time AND I heard him Then she tells me she can't get the correct order to me until 30 minutes later, even though it was steamed rice and they are five minutes away...walking.
