The Basics: Oriental Pearl is a Chinese/ Dim Sum spot located in Atlanta. I have been to Oriental Pearl multiple times (during pre-pandemic times) and always enjoyed my experience here. Things I like: They have dim sum carts and I always enjoyed getting dim sum fresh from the cards. I have been to this spot about five times before and always had a good experience. Things I didn't like: I ordered take out dim sum this week and I did not enjoy it at all. The items didn't taste fresh, there was a piece of hair in one of the dishes, and between both of those elements combined I did not find this take out appetizing. Overall, I hope to be able to amend this review once I am able to dine in person again. However, due to this experience, I cannot suggest Oriental Pearl for takeout at this time. read more

It has been almost 6 months since I last had dim sum and it's definitely not something I'm going to enjoy anytime soon even if we go back to normal. I found out that Oriental Pearl delivers to Midtown via an app called Chowbus for a very reasonable delivery fee so wanted to give it a try. We got six kinds of dim sum: - Steam Cha Siu Pau $4.29 - Steam Egg Custard Pau $5.29 - Steam Shrimp Dumpling $5.29 - Blackened Spare Ribs $4.29 - Blackened Chicken Feet $4.29 - Steam Siu Mai $4.29 And two entrée size dishes: - Loofah W. Broth $19.99 金汤丝瓜 (bad name...this broth is made with century eggs, salted egg yolks, dry shrimp, shiitake etc.) - Sliced Bacon Pork W. Salted Vegetables 梅菜扣肉 $17.99 Everything tastes great and will last us for days!! It did take a bit longer for delivery but that's now their fault. I totally would round it up to 5 stars if I was basing solely on this experience. But those of you who go there in person may relate...the occasional chaos and consistently not glowing sanitation scores. I think 4 stars is more appropriate. This place is my go to restaurant for dim sum whenever I'm in the Atlanta area. They have all of the dim sum classics that you are looking for. Chicken feet, turnip cakes, soup dumplings, egg tarts, fried taro. If you're looking for a particular dim sum item, chances are, you'll probably find it here. Prices here are reasonable. Not super cheap but well within what you would pay for good dim sum. Coming from an area of Florida that is rather limited in terms of Chinese food and dim sum offerings, it always makes me happy setting foot in this place again. Always a good decision, and we like to frequently make this good decision. If you roll in at the height of dim sum brunch there will be a wait, you should wait :) As soon as you are seated you'll receive water and order hot tea. Carts will race towards you with a feast of options. Try everything! Been coming here since I was a young kid and my parents who are originally from Hong Kong attest to the authenticity of flavors -- decided to support since they're still doing takeout during this time. It's a bit crazy to remember the bustling hub that this Chinatown was before COVID, and to see it the juxtaposition now is jarring. 3.5 Stars I used to have dim sum here and then I moved on to Canton House. Even Canton House does not satisfy my dim sum fix anymore. That's what happens when I get to indulge in really good dim sum in Asia every summer. Last Friday was the first day of Chinese/Lunar New Year. A few of my friends in my building texted me and said to go out and have dinner at a Chinese restaurant. I texted back and asked would it be even possible? I would think all Chinese restaurants would be packed to the brim. Soon one texted back and said she had made a reservation at Oriental Pearl. Great! :) I did not have any other dinner plan and really did not want to eat dinner alone that night. When three of us arrived there, my friend's friend was already there waiting. I was really surprised the whole restaurant was almost empty. There were only 4 other tables which were occupied. One of us said the last time she was here in a group, they ordered the Peking Duck. I am always hesitant in ordering Peking Duck since Peking Duck is one of my favorite Chinese dish and I do have a high standard for it. Nevertheless, I told the rest they could decide whatever they like and I would just go along. So we ordered the Peking Duck (3 styles) and a clay pot of eggplants with garlic to share. FOOD 3.5/5 Peking Duck 3/5 I definitely have way better Peking duck. Honestly, I do not think that Peking duck served was prepared the right way. It made me sad. However, everyone who never have a great or authentic Peking duck would not know better, they were really enjoying the dish. So I was happy cos my friends were so happy :D I hate those buns that went with the duck. Why can't they serve Peking duck with Chinese crepes/pancakes? I noticed those Chinese restaurants who offer Peking Duck serve them with such buns which I believe are pre-packaged. Peking Duck 3 styles basically mean it would be served three ways, one with buns, hoisin sauce & cucumber, next would be duck bones and some meat in soup and the last one would be stir-fry duck meat. Eggplant with garlic 4/5 I do like this dish, it was not out of this world but I guess it was authentic enough for me to award a 4 out of 5. The eggplants were cooked perfectly. AMBIENCE 3.5/5 It was fine, typical Chinese restaurant with dragon motif, gold color palette. Not my style but I am not complaining. SERVICE 4/5 Service was great, not perfect. Staff was very nice to me, maybe cos I spoke Cantonese to her. She seemed a little irritated with one of my friends when she did not understand what the staff was trying to say. At the end of the dinner, we were given complimentary red bean dessert soup instead of oranges. Yasss!!!! Would I go back to Oriental Pearl? You can find Oriental Pearl "Seafood" Restaurant at 5399 New Peachtree Rd, Chamblee, GA 30341- this is a section of New Peachtree that's between Chamblee Dunwoody and Chamblee Tucker Roads and at the northern end of the historic Atlanta Chinatown (unfortunately most of the Chinese locals have moved further north but many businesses are still centered on this shopping center). There's tons of parking out front. I met several friends at Oriental Pearl as part of our regular Buford Highway Clawr group - we decided this time to include some businesses that are on the periphery of Buford Highway as they need love too, right? It's been many years since I visited this restaurant and as I recall I came her only once prior for weekend dim sum. This end of the shopping center features a porte-a-cochere style entry with two concrete Chinese lions before a well-lit sign. As you might expect, this is what I normally call a swag-Chinese restaurant with classic dishes adjusted to American ingredients and palate. The interior is a bit dated - call it "comfortable" with real white tablecloths and high backed chairs. We were seated in a large round table with spinning lazy-susan which made things very easy for us. We ordered an assortment of meat, tofu and vegetarian dishes (several veg or vegan in the group) and shared, starting with egg rolls. My favorite was a shrimp-and-scallop dish served in a birds-nest of fried noodles. There may be some specialty dishes here that we weren't aware of to order - these old school Chinese restaurants frequently have some hidden gems. I'd say that the food in general was good but not great and my expectations were about dead-on. Service was good for the most part however we did need to flag someone down for a water refill. This may be one of those spots that's better for lunch - I'm not sure. As a specific destination I think I'd rather hit one of the other Chinese spots close by, but as a meeting place for a largish group they have plenty of space and parking, so it would be good for that purpose. If you're in Atlanta and you utter the phrase "Hey where can I get some good dim sum?" The answer you will overwhelmingly receive is Oriental Pearl. Having been in Atlanta's for over 25 years, it is an iconic part of Atlanta's Chinatown's landscape. OP is officially titled as Oriental Pearl Seafood Restaurant and they serve the traditional asian dishes, but they are best know for their dim sum. So off we went, fellow Yelpers Paul, Linh and friends to the land of dim sum. So your next question should be what is "dim sum"? You may compare it to tapas in Spanish cuisine where snack or small sized dishes are served. That's pretty much where the similarities end. There are a few unique characteristics of dim sum cuisine. Originally started in small tea houses, today dim sum has evolved to family members gathering together after church on Sundays to catch up over a mid-day meal. Dim sum can also be liken to a buffet except the food is brought TO you. One distinctive part of dim sum cuisine are the carts. During the peak of dim sum madness, there are carts being pushed around by servers all around the dining room and coming in and out of the kitchen. The servers are usually pretty good about visiting your table, but sometimes you have to flag them down. This visiting of your table is similar to the servers coming to your table with skewers of meat at Texas de Brazil. Traditionally using bamboo steamers, today's carts are now filled with round aluminum type steamers that are easier to clean and reuse. These steamers are the heart of dim sum cuisine and hold the myriad of dishes from which you choose. There are many many dishes to choose from and the choices reflect the reputation that OP is the place for dim sum outside of San Francisco or NY Chinatowns. As the carts approach your table you pick what you want to eat and using tongs, the server places the entire steamer container on your table. Each container is usually filled with about 4 pieces. Food is also served on small plates. There were also carts that were equipped with a burner where dishes are basically cooked tableside. You will then notice the server marking on a piece of paper that was on your table. Your server is making a note of what you chose. At the end of your feast you take that ticket to a counter near the entrance and settle up. The prices are surprisingly affordable as the 6 of us feasted for under a hundred and we were stoofed! Dim sum cuisine are mainly steamed or fried and includes various different types of buns, dumpling, or rolls as well as stir fried. Unfortunately we did not pace ourselves and didn't get to try some dishes that I was looking forward to like taro cake and congee, a flavorful overcooked rice dish. But we did try the cha siu bao, a steamed bun filled with a distinctive reddish barbecued pork... yom yom yom. The rice noodle rolls were top notched. Shrimp and beef were rolled in sheets of thin rice noodles, steamed, portioned then served on small plates drizzled with sauce. Delicious! The perfectly steamed chinese broccoli drizzled with oyster sauce was spot on! The shrimp and pork dumplings were also a big hit. We all thought the fried calamari was a bit more greasy than what we're used to, but they did use the tentacles. Thumbs up! I was thoroughly enjoying dipping my dishes in their very hot chili oil mixed with a little bit of soy sauce. Another version of the steamed dumpling, the shumai, was also excellent. We ate so much there really wasn't room for dessert, but we managed to squeeze in some freshly made sesame seed balls filled with red bean paste... one of Tammy's favorites. Another characteristic of dim sum cuisine is tea drinking. No, not Milos sweet tea, asian hot tea. There are almost as many different types of teas as there are dumplings, but Paul asked for a pot of hot jasmine tea. Excellent choice. If you've never had traditional chinese tea, it can be bland and an acquired taste. Seen more often at dim sum type restaurants are large round family sized tables with a "lazy susan" turntable on top of the table, but these are almost as large as the table itself. Steamers and plates are all placed on this turntable as it can be rotated around so everyone can take what they wish. So there's no "can you pass those dumplings down?". Just turn that table top until it's within arm's reach. Why isn't there dim sum in Birmingham? Some places here have tried, but maybe the answer is that people are driving to Atlanta for dim sum?!? For someone who only gets to eat dim sum maybe twice a year, a meal like this is a treat. If I lived in Atlanta and partook with more frequency, I would be more critical, but until then, every visit will be an automatic 5 stars. We came here for dim sum on a weekend and hit the tail end of the lunch time rush. We scored a good spot in the otherwise full, large parking lot. There was no wait however, even though the place was pretty full. As with dim sum, we were quick to get mobbed with carts and were eating in no time. The selection was pretty standard, although they did not have fried dough. We got most everything with shrimp in it and were impressed with the friend shrimp balls. They were huge. We were waiting out traffic before our drive to Chattanooga so decided to go to Chinatown for early dinner. Chinatown in Atlanta is kinda sad. Like it's one plaza and a restaurant. This restaurant. Reviews were decent so we decided to go for it. It was a great choice . The restaurant is set up for tradition chinese wedding banquets. Service was excellent. Our server came by several times to switch out our dirty plates. We ordered a bunch of dishes but the stars were their boiled chicken and clams in black bean. My dad raved about how excellent both dishes were and how tender the chicken was was a testament to what a great chef they have. Definitely impressed my picky dad, which says a lot. read more

Even on a busy weekend we were able to get seated immediately. I have had almost all the shrimp dim sum options and they are all delicious. They have other vegetarian options as well. I think anyone would be able to find something to their liking. Plates avg from 4-6$, but you'll be full off of 3-4 plates. Always fun to go with a group of people so you can try a range of dim sums. Hard to tell if the food was good, because so much of it was served cold. Went for Sunday dim sum, and many of the items were cold, including the spareribs, shrimp cake, shrimp toast, and even the duck sauce felt like it had just been taken out of the refrigerator. I don't know if it's because it's cold in the restaurant, thereby making the food get cold quicker, or the food is not properly stored on the dim sum carts. Nonetheless, being served cold food detracts from the taste. Same complaint as other reviewers.... Oh, and the shrimp dumplings were not good, tasted fishy. read more

My dad and I have been going to Oriental Pearl for close to 30 years for the dim sum. My dad loves their chicken feet and I love their shumai, their sesame seed buns and a host of other small plates. We are always greeted with a friendly and warm, hello. The service is always excellent and the restaurant is clean. Maybe I'm not a dim sum person, but I don't understand the hype about this place. My friends recommended me this place as ~the best~ dim sum place ITP, and my boyfriend never tried dim sum before, so we decided to check it out. Parking can be kind of tight, especially if come on the weekend. It shares the same parking lot as other business, but if the front parking lot is full, there's a larger parking lot in the back. We came around ~12 pm on Sunday and it was super crowded. Definitely come early if you want to beat the rush - we waited around 45 minutes before getting a table. I didn't really mind the wait though because I already knew the wait would be long for dim sum - good things comes to those to wait, right? Well. . .no necessarily. Once we were finally seated, we waited around 5 minutes before the first cart came to our table. I'm not sure how the carts work here, but there doesn't seem to be a set path the carts travel down. It is really frustrating when you see a cart two tables over and they skip over your completely. It seemed like the carts only came to tables with more than 2 people seated (probably trying to meet a quota? idk). Since it's so crowded, it's hard to wave down the carts as well. So if you aren't seated in the prime spot (in front of the kitchen or near the edges), you're SOL until someone decides to push a cart towards your direction. I think within the hour my boyfriend and I came, the same three carts came to our table and the other carts kept skipping us. The food that we did get was okay- nothing spectacular and definitely not worth the wait in my opinion. A somewhat legit Chinese restaurant in the ATL area. The place is packed during weekend lunch hours for dim sum, but in the evening it's almost completely empty. The food is somewhat decent. As someone who grew up in China I wouldn't describe it as amazing, but I know many of my local friends enjoy the place. Service is quick, but as in many Chinese restaurants, not as standardized. They do have a big menu, so you can pretty much satisfy your craving for Chinese food. If you have dietary restrictions, then definitely come with someone who can speak Chinese! As many times as I've gone here, I haven't wrote a review yet. I've been here so many times in the past years for dim sum to weddings to event parties. The service is great. I'm not a huge fan of dim sum but they have good meals for weddings and parties. Lots of seafood options, which I'm also not a huge fan of but most Asians are. I'm posting an update for Oriental Pearl after some family friends treated us to the restaurant's special "prix fixe" five-course dinner. It was rather good. If you want a well-rounded and fulfilling Cantonese-style dinner without having to put much thought into what to order, this is a great option. These five courses also come with a dessert (sixth course), so it's quite a bit of food, ideal for about 6 people. Here's what we had (my descriptions, not sure what they're called on the menu): Fish maw soup Assorted steamed seafood and vegetables in "bird's nest" bowl Red crispy pork Steamed whole flounder Yu choy Beef tendon and tripe with silken tofu Red bean soup dessert The fish maw soup resembled egg drop soup, except instead of eggs, fish maw (swim bladder) is used instead. Fish maw is the organ that helps fish control their buoyancy under water. This is a very common soup in China. The organ was served shredded and had a light, fluffy consistency. This white soup was a tad thick in consistency. It goes great with red vinegar and white pepper (both provided at the table). Seafood included scallops, squid, and shrimp while veggies included crunchy snow peas, carrots, and mushrooms. All of the ingredients had a glaze to them from the sauce. The edible bowl was placed upon a small bed of shredded lettuce. Not the most flavorful dish, but certainly healthy. The red crispy pork is one of my favorite things to eat at Cantonese restaurants. The pork is cut up into several almost-bite-size pieces, bone-in, and covered with plenty of savory sauce. You may have to eat some of the pieces with your fingers in order to get all the meat off. I like Oriental Pearl's version because they don't overdo it with the sauce. It's just the right amount. The steamed whole flounder was fresh. We saw the flounder swimming around in one of the tanks when we arrived. It was a large-sized flounder with plenty of meat. As with all Cantonese whole fish, be careful not to eat any bones. Nice white fish with added flavor from the ginger, scallions, and sauce. It went well with steamed white rice. I love green leafy vegetables so I really enjoyed the yu choy (a.k.a. choy sum). It's a nice change of pace from Chinese broccoli and snow pea leaves. The yu choy is similar, perhaps lighter in flavor and color. A lot of stalks, leaves, and tips. Delicious, light, and crisp. The beef tendon and tripe with silken tofu was a dense and heavy dish. Served in an iron bowl with handle, this dish ws very close to a stew as it came with a ton of sauce/gravy. It was a rich dish that definitely needed to be eaten with rice to balance out the strong flavors. The tripe had been cleaned thoroughly, though occasionally some of its aroma came through. Tofu was smooth and chewy. The red bean soup dessert is a common dessert served by many Cantonese restaurants. The sweet, semi-thick soup had many small red beans and mini-gelatinous bites. A refreshing end to a rather filling meal. It's taken a while, but Oriental Pearl has grown on me. It's not a bad stop for Cantonese food, including dim sum, in Atlanta. This place is so awesome in so many ways. From the crazy asian decor all around to the fresh fish by the kitchen. They serve Dim Sum every day until 3pm. After that you must order from their menu (I've done that too and loved all the plates). They are packed on Sa/Su so expect a long wait unless you call ahead. Parking might be tough and most staff don't speak English but don't let that dissuade you. This place is worth the trip! Dim Sum is traditional Chinese Canton cuisine prepared as small bite-sized portions of food traditionally served in small steamer baskets or on small plates. Thinks tapas or but in the form of all the dumplings you can eat! There is only one other place that I know of that serves Dim Sum and that's Canton House (they are also good but a different experience). You see folks come by in carts with steamed and fried dumplings as well as other treats such a chicken feet, Asian broccoli, noodles, egg rolls, etc. You simply point and nod your head and they'll serve it on your table. Most plates range about $4-5. My favorite is always the shrimp dumplings, bean curd dim sum and pork dumplings. I bring friends all the time as a treat. Fire. Dim sum is solid--it's my go to within the perimeter--sticky rice, bbq pork buns, shumai, the works. They also have a really robust dining menu that is very quick and tasty. We typically get the beef chow fun with the dry sauce (important distinction). Weekends will feature the dim sum carts in the first half of the day but you can order it off menu at any time. read more

Not even worth of rated 1 star. The service was so bad, they gave us the wrong sauces and when we asked to change they were rude. Also, the servers were very loud. They talked in Chinese right next to us even when we asked for them to come, they were talking around and didn't come at the first ask. The food didn't look fresh either. We gave them a lot of tip because we thought they would be nice to us after, but still we haven't heard one thank you or bye or have a nice day. They were so rude we wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. read more

Came here as soon as they opened on a Sunday morning since we were visiting the area on a 2 day trip and I needed my dim sum fix. I can definitely say if you get there when they open you most likely won't have a wait as I noticed the place didn't start to fill up until closer to noon. The room was decorated beautifully and the spaces were very open and family friendly. It was just my husband and I, but we enjoy the space so we didn't mind. The service was great and very attentive. They provided a large variety of dishes to choose from and explained the ones we were unfamiliar with which helped. Loved the experience here, so we'll definitely return and recommend. read more

What better way to spend a weekend morning than over dim sum? Waitresses keep offering you tidbits of pork and shrimp, your endless pot of tea gets refilled without asking if you leave the lid up (there's a veteran tip), and at almost every place on this list, six people can eat until you're bored or full! This restaurant also offers dinner items to accompany the dim sum, but you'll have to ask for the menu. I highly recommend coming in 10-11am. My group and arrived around 1030. There were tables filled but not too much. Don't need to reserve when it's that early. The items are still hot and waitresses are looking for there next prey. Service is fast and hospitable when it's thar early. The thing is, dim sum technically served from mornings till around 2-3 pm. Most restaurants across the board. So don't be dismayed if you see not much is left if you stroll in later. The only restaurants I found that served dim sum around the clock was in Hong kong, Taiwan etc. It's not the best dim sum I've ever had..in comparison to Los Angeles, San Francisco, new York, and overseas..it still is considerable better than most in Atlanta! From this perspective, I give this place 4 stars. Not 5, I felt some of my favorite dishes could've been better. The turnip cake was crispy but completely uncooked or too smushy.
