Dear god this was the worst food we have had in a long time. We had the soup dumplings (we couldn't finish them...this has...never happened), the shumai (awful, rubbery), the turnip cake (not seared well, goopy), and the chive cakes (just gross). Took my husband's family here who was visiting from both Hong Kong and Taiwan. We ordered both the dim sum and Szechuan dishes and they were all authentic and well prepared. My husband's father who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area also remarked that the food here was better than virtually all of the Chinese restaurants in the Bay Area. Service was friendly and efficient. We will definitely be back when we are in town. read more

My husband and I decided to other some take out for the first time here since the last time in Noho his was another restaurant. We entered and were greeted immediately. Our food was ready after 15-20 mins of ordering and everyone attending us was very kind. We ordered the pan fried dumplings and beef lo mien and it was YUMMMMMY! We found it flavorful and fresh. This place beat out expectations! We had a sushi roll special and its presentation and preparation was the best we had ever seen. It was also delicious. The soup dumplings I thought were really meaty and tasty, although my girlfriend thought they were a little dry. I had the dry rub seafood paradise and it was spicy and flavorful. This restaurant is, by far, the best Chinese cuisine I have had in the Valley. I was in China and Taiwan in May, and the flavors at Oriental Taste were authentic; reminiscent of the restaurants and street side "cafes" that we ate at while in Shanghai and Xian. I have been there 5 times since they opened, and have yet to be disappointed. Sushi is amazing as well, which is added bonus at a Chinese restaurant. Go while you still can get in. This restaurant is going to be extremely popular if they continue serving such excellent food. read more

After trying 5 times to call for take out, we finally reached a person. We were appalled to learn that their minimum for take-out is $50!!! The woman on the phone told us she could not provide an estimate for when food would delivered only that it "would be awhile" and hung up. Clearly they are new to the take-out game, but if you're going to discourage people from ordering take-out, why offer it in the first place... I'll definitely give them a second chance once they've been open longer and will update with a hopefully more positive experience. read more

I've been there twice in the past couple of weeks and had good food but HORRIBLE service both times. I work in the service industry so I'm usually pretty forgiving and give people the benefit of the doubt, which is why I went back after the first bad experience, but today confirmed it and I will never go back. The first time a couple of weeks ago I went in for lunch. We were one of two small parties. There were two servers on so it should have been good service, but our server took our order and then brought it out and sat at the back table (probably doing side work which is understandable...but she never came back to check in.) I had to flag her down to order a second beverage. She acknowledged my order but never brought the beverage. Never checked to see if we were happy with our meal. We were trying to get her attention from our table when we were done and she was standing in the back doorway staring at the floor for a very long time until I decided to get up and go back there to ask for the bill. As I got up, the other server noticed I was getting impatient and called to her and she finally came over to see what we needed. Then, today my boyfriend, daughter and I went in and I was relieved to see we had a different server and was hopeful we would have better service- the service was okay but my boyfriend's meal came out first, then mine came about 10 minutes later, and then 5 minutes or so after than our daughter's food came out but it was wrong. She has an aversion to anything spicy so she was very specific to order her sushi without spicy sauce even though the menu didn't say it was spicy. When she finally got her sushi 20+ minutes after they started serving the meals it was drizzled in spicy sauce and she had to send it back. At that point we just told them to forget her meal. We were ready for the check and we weren't about to wait another 15-20 minutes for her sushi when we could just walk across the street to Moshi Moshi and get the same roll (without spicy sauce) in 5 minutes- so that's exactly what we did. No apology, no manager, no discount, nothing to acknowledge the terrible service. I will not go back- I'll stick with Moshi Moshi. read more

Got a terribly cooked dish; cold tofu and undercooked greens. Not only did the waiter not check on us (so I may have been able to get a different meal) when he came and I told him I ate none of it, he didn't help at all. Absolutely awful. The food sits in your stomach and makes you feel greasy and gross. The waitstaff is awful, they do not bring food on time, they are not polite, and they mumble horribly. They have the tastiest and most authentic dim sum in Northampton. There's a separate menu of dim sum items to choose from. Dim sum takes a little time to wait. But it's worth it. Waiter(tresses) are extremely friendly. Dim sum price are fair. Portion size on sum dishes from the main menu could be slightly bigger. But that's personal preference. I live an hour and a half north to come here. It's definitely worth the drive. read more

It's great to have authentic Chinese cuisine in the Pioneer Valley! The dry braised intestine, spicy pig's ear, and twice cooked pork are scrumptious. I'd recommend anything on the menu flavored with szechuan peppercorn. This is now my go-to for Chinese food, and it should be yours too. read more

As a former New Yorker who long lamented the lack of good Chinese restaurants in Western Massachusetts on a par with those of New York's Chinatown near where I long resided, I can state with certainty, after six visits, that Northampton's Oriental Taste is equal to some of the best restaurants NY's Chinatown has to offer. I'm truly amazed by it. Some may question how authentic or tasty one or so offerings are -- as a reviewer or two has -- but I have yet to encounter any that are less than excellent except perhaps for a few of the dim sum that might not be up to Chinatown standards. But the shrimp in orange sauce, the fish fillets with bean curd, either in brown or other sauces, the shredded pork in farm vegetables, the eggplant in garlic sauce, and a host of other dishes too varied to mention are superb and authentic. As a general rule, good Chinese restaurants serving authentic food do so when they can draw upon a large Chinese population accustomed to what's being offered. So its truly amazing in my mind that Northampton, with its limited number of Chinese residents, has a restaurant of such quality. As a full-time resident of Western Mass for twenty years and one who visited the region for thirty years previously to moving here, it is clear to me that this is the best Chinese restaurant Western Mass has ever experienced. May the present chef and owners have a long and prosperous life -- and remain in Northampton. read more

The food is fantastic. Unfortunately there are problems with the service. We first tried delivery, which seems designed to discourage customers from requesting it. There is a minimum order of $50 and a $3 delivery charge. I know of no other restaurants in the area that do this. And it doesn't even mean they will deliver under those circumstances. Once we were told the minimum was $60, (which we met) , and tonight we were told , after again someone stumbled through trying to ask us how much we were ordering, that in the end they had no delivery driver tonight at 10:10 pm on a Sat. when they are open until 10:30pm. And when we went there, on another occasion, the waitress we landed was basic, borderline rude, with obviously no intention of making our dining experience enhanced by her presence. One of the other waitresses did have a clue and we so wished she had been assigned to our table. We were laughing at the end and insisted on wrapping up our own leftovers, god only knows what our waitress would have done to them or with them. BTW, she got 20% plus, my husband and I were servers for many years. Even talked to the owner on our way out, but not about that young woman so terribly unsuited to her job. Again, the food is always fantastic, and we hope they work out the other problems. read more

Simply the best Chinese food in the valley. This place totally surprised me, I was expecting Generic Chinese Place #94769 and a glance at the menu deepened this suspicion. However, the standard dishes are perfectly prepared, and furthermore there are TONS of unique house specialties and authentic szechuan dishes lurking to surprise you. an excellent authentic Chinese restaurant. definitely the best Chinese restaurant in Northampton (next favorite is Great Wall in Florence). this was opened by the same owner of Oriental Flavor in Amherst, which is also one of my favorites. the owner of this restaurant has always been very nice to us and provided great service. the staff is friendly and they are accepting of young children at the restaurant which is always a plus for a family with kids. read more
