We recently tried Origami Handroll X Kushiyaki Bar for the first time, and overall it was a great experience with several standout dishes. The hand rolls were definitely the highlight. My favorite was the spicy yellowtail hand roll--it had great flavor and just the right amount of spice. I didn't get a chance to try every variety, but the ones I had were fresh and delicious. The unagi was also excellent. We ordered several yakitori skewers, and while the tongue and short rib were both tender and full of flavor, most of the others were unfortunately overcooked. The pork belly and gizzard, in particular, ended up a bit too tough. The miso soup was exactly what you'd expect--simple, warm, and comforting. The premium chirashi bowl was outstanding and easily one of the best dishes of the meal. Every piece of fish was incredibly fresh, but the tuna belly was especially memorable--it practically melted in your mouth. For drinks, I highly recommend the Lychee Sake-tini. It was well-balanced, not overly sweet, and packed with refreshing lychee flavor. We brought our young daughter with us, and she had a wonderful meal too. She really enjoyed the udon noodle soup along with both the California hand roll and the unagi hand roll. Despite a few disappointing yakitori skewers, the exceptional seafood, delicious cocktails, and friendly atmosphere made for a very enjoyable dining experience. I've been on the hunt for restaurants with a good Happy Hour, so I was excited to stumble upon Origami's $5 Mini Appetizers menu. It's a great way to sample a variety of dishes without spending a fortune. The Happy Hour menu includes items like fried squid legs, crispy rice with tuna or salmon, spicy edamame, chicken karaage, and chicken skewers. My favorite was definitely the crispy rice with salmon. Most places only offer it with tuna, so it was nice to see a salmon option for a change. Everything we tried was tasty, although the portions really do live up to the "mini" name. You can amass a ton of points but can only use them to discount 1 roll each time, and you can't use them at all on the lunch specials. Initially, thinking that this might be a small, I walked out very full after. An easy choice for hand rolls is the Salmon. They give it a generous amount and I clearly enjoyed it so much that I did not give you a picture. I had the scallop hand roll, which was very yummy. The sauce that the scallops are tossed is light and not overpowering at all. My favorite was the Unagi hand roll because they see it right in front of you. With the crunch of this seaweed and Unagi it's better than having Unagi Maki. The spicy yellowtail was given as a compliment and honestly, I was so grateful to have it. A bit sad that they no longer have the tuna donburi bowl so I opted for the Chirashi bowl, which is as delicious! Good amount of fish and it's pretty fresh too, definitely good quality sashimi. We all ordered the 5 pc hand roll each. It's deceptively filling so watch out... i got scallops, tuna, salmon, unagi, and yellowtail. All of them were so good! My favorite being the yellowtail and tuna. You get to choose one sauce and I chose the yuzu one which was refreshing and a nice citrusy bite. The rolls were all good, i have to say the premium scallop one was the best one. It was so buttery and not overwhelming at all. The Wagyu was rich and not super fatty like some skewers I've had and the beef tongue was good with the lime, salt and pepper. I will say it was a little more tough but i find that's just how thicker cut beef tongue is. They have tablets for you to order but ours wasn't working so the server took the orders, i think it was a normal wait time for food. Not overly slow or fast. We sat at the bar so they just handed us our HR as they were making them. The location is a bit small so i can see there being long waits if you're not an early crew like my friend and i were. The music is also a little loud, but we were right under the speaker so that might be why. The sushi is so good and the seaweed wrap was crispy. If you like good quality fish, definitely check this place out. They even have some vegan and vegetarian hand rolls. If I had to give an exact rating, I'd say this place is more of a 3.5-star experience but I decided to round up to 4 stars, and here's why: I came on a Sunday with a friend to celebrate her birthday. We arrived right at opening, around 11:30 AM. They were tasty, but very light on the soju -- almost like a fruity juice with a splash of alcohol. At $8 each, I was expecting a bit more of a kick. I didn't bring it up at the time since we were celebrating my friend's birthday and I didn't want to set a negative tone, but it was definitely a bit of a letdown. For food, we ordered the handroll combo, which lets you choose 5 handrolls which also comes with a cucumber salad, miso soup, and green tea. It was definitely a good deal and would order it in a heartbeat. The handrolls were solid and satisfying, with a good rice-to-fish ratio. My favorites were the spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and spicy scallop. Personally, anything spicy is a win for me and felt the fish and scallops were very fresh. We also tried a few yakitori skewers (chicken meatballs, pork belly, and beef) to fill out the meal. The chicken meatballs were overly salty, and while they came with an optional sweet teriyaki-style dipping sauce, I wasn't a fan of that either -- though I will say, the presentation was nice. The beef and pork belly were a much better option, but the portions were small and not quite worth the price, in my opinion. If I had the choice again, I'd skip the yakitori and get an extra handroll or two instead. My friend mentioned she usually comes here with her husband and really enjoys their premium rolls, but I decided to save that for another visit. Although, I wish I had the chance to try them this time around. All in all, this place really shines with its handrolls as that is clearly their specialty. I am freaking obsessed with this place! The true star of the show is the Hokkaido Ice Cream. I would go here just for that. The sushi was just okay, but the skewers were delicious. I would suggest 4-5 skewers per person if you're hungry. The hand rolls were decent and unique in flavor. The service was just okay. I think our waitress was new so she was fumbling around in trying to help us and was supported by another worker. came in for the lunch special of $21 for 5 hand rolls with miso soup, edamame, iced green tea and choice of sauce. tbh i can here when they first opened and was not that satisfied w the set menu just bc i didn't care for what i was getting with the cost. basically felt that it was too pricey for what you get. for this meal, it was great in value! the only thing is you aren't able to get unagi or yellowtail. The miso soup was tasty and the edamame was a good portion and not overcooked, which was pleasant. The ice green tea was simple and just serve served as a replacement to water, I didn't care too much for it, but I'll drink it since it came with the package. I opted for the truffle soy sauce and they do give a good amount for your set, I didn't run out of sauce, which was nice. i do love that they do put little toppings in each roll, makes them more enjoyable. i got the bluefin tuna, tuna avocado crunch, salmon, scallop, and spicy salmon. They did mess up the order and gave me a spicy scallop instead of spicy salmon...which was okay, but a bit of a bummer..which is the reason for my slightly decreased rating. Another point is I felt that the bluefin tuna and the tuna and the avocado crunch tasted the same and had the same texture, so in that case, the bluefin tuna did not really taste like beef and tuna that I've had before in the past at different sushi spots. Because of this, I would probably not order the bluefin tuna if I come back. Service was quick and the restaurant was pretty empty when we came in for lunch at 2 PM on a Wednesday so we got seated pretty quickly and our food came out in a timely fashion. Servers were very nice and attentive. Ambience was nice bar seating and table seating was available and it's very clean and modern inside. lots of parking available in the lot.
