Thai food with a flare!!! One of things I love about this place is the quality ingredients they use in every dish. Everything seems very fresh. I am regular here for lunch as I work near by. Lunch specials come with your option with Salad or Soup. You can't go wrong with either. For salad, I prefer the the "peanut" dressing - after all you are at a Thai restaurant. The other option is "balsamic vinaigrette". Soups change daily but the mushroom is recommended on the days it is available. For main course, I love their Masaman Curry or Noodles Curry. Pad Thai is a typical choice for anyone but I am not the biggest fan here. Regardless of what you order, the vegetables will feel fresh and not from a frozen bag. I'm not an expert on Thai cuisine, or french-thai whatever that means. That being said, I really like the food at origins. I am a creature of habit and when I find a dish I like I ALWAYS get the same thing. My thing here is the Pad Gra Praw with chicken. It has just the right amount of heat and I love the basil flavor. I have also had the mussels which are really good (though I cant remember if they were at this location or the Somerville location). I also really like the Thai iced tea, I assume its pretty common to Thai restaurants but its very aromatic and refreshing. The ambiance is nice. I mostly go for lunch with coworkers, but the decor looks fancy and would be acceptable for bringing customers in a pinch. Its a very popular place and when going for lunch it fills up quick so we try to get there as early as possible. I'm not sure about dinner but I would err on the side of caution and call ahead to make a reservation. Unfortunately I had to take off 2 stars, one for each meal I received with hair in it. I am not one to complain about a meal so I did not bring it up with the manager and just didn't finish my plate. Usually after one hair I would never go back to a restaurant, but I really like the food (as mentioned above). After the second time I got a hair there I didn't go back for a while, but I recently went out with a group that wanted to go there so I agreed. If I ever get a third hair you can be sure that I will reduce my rating to 1 and never go again. I decided to go with one of the lunch specials- the duck burger. It came with a soup to start- I tried the corn soup which was spicy and delicious. The duck burger did not disappoint! Have been to this place, the one in Somerville and Morristown - and this is my fav. We used to come here often but took a break. Went back this week with my son and his GF visiting from LA. The place is solid. Everything about it, the perfect decor and ambiance for this cuisine, wait staff is attentive, and the menu has not changed since day one. We tend to always order the Pad Thai, and the mussels for an app. Those mussels, don't know how they do it but they are always aromatic with the lemon grass and thai basil and plump and fresh. Have never been disappointed. The pad Thai is the best we have had. I almost always order the gilled chicken dish with the dipping sauces and it is always excellent. we had the duck, a seared tuna and grilled shrimp with the dipping sauces. The ambience of Origin French Thai is really what I'd come here for. The place is super cute, a perfect place for data night. It has little 2 person semi-circle booths along one wall, and has a river/waterfall type situation in the middle of the restaurant. We went on a weekend night and it was really crowded so we had to wait about 30 minutes for a two-person table. The table we ended up at was almost touching a group of 4's table next to us. Let's just say it was really loud (overall in the whole restaurant) and I learned a lot of very personal details about the lives of our neighboring table's occupants. We were also in this sort of front corner section and I would recommend trying to get a seat closer to the main section of the restaurant with the little flowing river. Now onto the food. While the Tom Yum Soup with Shrimp and the Pad Kee Mao or drunken noodles were delicious, the massaman curry was a bit off. If I didn't eat massaman curry on a monthly basis, I'd probably say it was good, but unfortunately I love Thai food and eat Thai food all the time.. and have even eaten it in Thailand and something was super weird about their massaman curry. I would categorize it as "not very good". I'd definitely come back, but I just won't be getting the massaman curry from here again. read more

We came here on a Saturday night recently with our good friends (party of 7). We've all been to the Morristown location before, but it was our first time at the Basking Ridge location. We made a reservation earlier in the day, and they typically seat at 30 minute intervals. The waiting area isn't too big, but since they seem pretty organized with their reservations, it wasn't a problem. In fact, we were seated very close to our reservation time. The host, however, wasn't the friendliest person. The restaurant is beautiful inside and there are lots of lit candles everywhere adding to the ambiance (and potential fire hazard). The only problem is that the large, open dining room is pretty loud as there is nothing to absorb the sound and the ceiling is pretty high. Our server was very nice and opened up our wine and beer bottles for us. He was always smiling and got a kick out of us playing with the wing corkscrew bottle opener. We ordered a few appetizers to share (Steamed Vietnamese Rice Ravioli, Chicken Sate and Golden Curry Puff), and they were all very good. For entrees, I loved my dish (Chicken Lad Nar) and the others liked theirs as well: Shrimp Pad Thai, Tofu Lad Nar, Pad Kee Maow, and the Asian ribs (daily special). Portions were large especially the Pad Thai. For dessert, my wife ordered the Fried Ice Cream (thought this was only served in Mexican restaurants). She liked it, but I thought it was just OK. My friend liked his Creme Brulee. It's in a convenient location right off of Route 78 and it's BYOB (liquor store conveniently next door). We'll definitely return. read more

Went back to this place for dinner-- decor is still as gorgeous as I recall from last time. We started with lemongrass mussels and the green papaya salad, both of which were winners. The broth for the mussels was perfect for a chilly winter night, and the sticky rice croutons with the salad were a pleasant surprise. For entrees we went with the noodle curry, which was good but a little on the rich/over-coconut side, but I guess that's in keeping with the French/Thai fusion aspect of the menu. We also got the Bangkok duck, which was perfectly cooked, albeit with the same slightly sweet issue with respect to the sauce. Added bonus is that while the restaurant has no liquor license, we were able to pop over to the wine shop next door, grab a great white for $10.99, and have it served with dinner with no additional corkage fee. I have had this fascination with Thai food recently, trying new dishes and restaurants as often as I can. Let me tell you, Origin did not disappoint with the food, service, and overall experience. We were seated after waiting about 5 minutes at this intimate couch table in the back of the restaurant. It is a bring your own, so we brought wine. Immediately after sitting down, the waiter took our bottle and opened it for us. I had the marinated seared tuna salad for an appetizer. They did not describe the dish properly but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It had perfectly seared tuna crusted with black pepper, which made it spicy. The salad part had some veggies and edamame topped with a spicy dressing. Overall, the dish was unique and I would definitely order it again. Now, my main meal was amazing and if I could, I would have licked the plate. I got the Royal massaman curry, which is a Thai yellow curry. I had never tried it before and wanted to have something new this particular evening. It had depth of flavor and an addicting quality to it. It tasted creamy from the coconut milk and had an abundance of onions that made it sweet. To me, the avocados were an odd addition, but somehow it worked. Finally, I got the dish with shrimp which is the correct meat to choose when ordering this curry. They serve it to you with rice, which the menu doesn't indicate. The rice is a perfect outlet to sop up all the wonderful sauce that is this meal. I would order this again and again. It is my new favorite Thai dish. I tried a few bites of the grilled steak that someone at the table had gotten and it was cooked perfectly. He ordered it medium, but it came out more like a rare, typical of restaurants BUT it was juicy and tasted just right. It is served with 3 sauces, grilled veggies, and sticky rice. The person who ordered it cleaned the plate and loved the green sauce with the steak. We guessed that it was cilantro based. We did not order dessert because we were so full. I cannot comment on the other dishes at my table but NO ONE had anything bad to say. We were ecstatic to find such a little gem tucked away in this shopping center. I will be back again! read more

Update 2/18/12: Returned to Origin III with friends. The Peking Duck salad is still outstanding. The Tamarind Duck was a great entree. The pork ravioli special and wild boar were good, too. The "new" carmelized banana spring roll dessert was disappointing. Service was fine, despite their (bad) habit of clearing plates before everyone is finished with each course. It was Saturday night; the place was packed and the sound level pretty high -- making cross table conversation challenging. Still deserves 4 stars. Update 3/6/11: We visited Origin III again tonight with friends. We still love the food and the ambience. Our waitress was trying very hard, and was very nice. We didn't have a "bad" experience as described in other reviews (being rushed out, etc.), but compared to other places, it probably doesn't deserve 5 stars for service. Original reiview: We've been here several times and we really like it! I always get the Peking Duck salad, which is fantastic. The regular menu offers rack of lamb, wild boar, and two salmon entrees, all of which are excellent. My wife likes the Pad See Yew, but has tried the steak au poivre, too. Great Thai restaurant. I came here with my mom around my birthday and really hadn't had Thai much before, so I was a bit skeptical, but I am so happy that we came here. The Atmosphere is very cozy and trendy. It's a BYO, so we brought a bottle of wine. The Food is presented very elegantly and just like the presentation the taste doesn't let you down. I found myself trying everything that my mom ordered as well and was very happy with the service. The Food was priced accordingly and I wasn't upset with the prices at all. Once I finished my dinner, my mom excused herself, (Little did I know she was telling them that it was my birthday) when she came back, I noticed that the music changed sort of drastically, (being a dj) I thought to myself that it was really odd, how they went from elegant background ambiance music to very upbeat music. Just as I said something to my mom, I realized why. They put on a funny show for the birthday patron. We dined here with two other couples. I had the Tom Ka Kai soup which was flavorful. I had the Gra Praw as the main course which had a nice balance of heat and basil. My wife had the squid salad which she said was good by not fantastic. The Sea Bass, ordered by many at the table, was excellent. There is also a nice selection of sorbets and teas for dessert. The coconut was particularly tasty. The service was friendly and efficient but not particularly helpful with menu choices. Very nice atmosphere for dining as a couple or groups.
