Locals to this area kept telling me to go to Origin so I finally did, on my last night in town. I'm so glad I went and that this place lived up to the hype. I should've brought a nice bottle of white or plum wine with me, which would've enhanced my experience, I'm sure, but I still enjoyed the food and atmosphere very much. (By the way, if you're not familiar with this area, like me, just know there's a wine place two doors down from here). I ordered light and only had the shrimp/crab spring roll and duck salad served fresh with carrots and apples in an edible won ton bowl. I also ordered a Thai iced coffee. Updating my review after an extremely disappointing return visit. We had to head back out to MSK today and had lunch afterwards at Origin. Service was practically hostile. People were sitting outside so we asked to sit outside and were told that they weren't serving outside that day. Uh huh. Ok. We sit down and the waitress who came over was beyond gruff and surly. She took our order, left in a bit of a huff, and that was all we saw of her until the end. Bus boys brought out lunch (duck for me and softshell crab for him) and I don't think they checked on us once, although someone came by to refill the water. The duck was dry and awful. I even remarked to my husband that it was probably left over from the weekend. The sauce that was served with it didn't taste at all like the tamarind sauce I was expecting. Really, it was terrible. My husband said his was passable but nothing to write home about. We were both very surprised and very disappointed since we'd had a good time last time we were here. At the end she asked if we wanted things wrapped and I said no, just the check. She plunks the check down in front of my husband. I grab it, put my card on it, she takes it, runs it, and comes back and puts it down in front of my husband again! As I was driving home I became nauseated and had to stop to lose my lunch. From the moment you walk into Origin be prepared for your senses to be amazed - from the beautiful decor, the delightful floral scent, the delightful staff and finally the amazing food. Origin has three locations, we have been to this one and the one in Somerville, both rate the same. My rating is based on the type of restaurant food served and should not be compared to other great restaurants out of this category, like Serenade or Lorena's. Origin serves mostly Thai and French food with a little Malaysian and Indian thrown in. All the food we've tried here so far has been good. We love this restaurant. You really don't need appetizers or dessert as the mains are quite large and they serve Thai house salad to start the meals. The Massamam curry and the Pad Thai are their speciality and extremely good. There's limited outdoor seating. The décor is dark but pretty. The only negative is that the seating is not comfortable, and the restaurant can be noisy when full during lunch/dinner time. The restaurant is also BYOB so you don't have to break bank on alcoholic beverages. There's a lovely little wine store directly next door. Perfect combination. read more

I've eaten at Somerville location for about 30 years and it's usually very good. Ate a few times at basking ridge and it's been going downhill. Had takeout today from basking Ridge and portion was very small, noddles were so mushy that they stuck together. Only 3 shrimp and about 5 small pieces of chicken. I have only been to this location for lunch, and am continually unimpressed. Today... driving with elderly clients with walkers.... I have to double park.. run in help them to the table.. then re-park... a mess.. And this place can get crazy for lunch, so I call to the restaurant from the lot to make sure we could get a table for 4.. "what time?" he asked "in 4 minutes?" "we don't take reservations!" "why did you ask me what time then?" he laughed at me... "thanks for the help buddy." So I ran in, and asked the same question, while double parked out front... The parking lot at this place is a zoo during lunch.. the strip mall has apartments above the storefronts and the lot is overflowing with SUVs driving creatively... MAD HOUSE. Entering I see that there are plenty of tables.. why the hell not tell me this on the phone? So lunch... My clients were happy with the Peking duck salad... a version of the traditional thai duck salad, using duck breast in a sweet and sour sauce, with apples, cashews and red onions served in a fried wonton bowl. they enjoyed it.. I thought it was overly sugary. I had a special.. Pork loin, and sausage with bok-choi and a literal MOUNTAIN of white rice. The plate looked huge, but only because the rice to everything else ratio... the sausage was a treat, but they only gave me 3 little slivers.. like garnish! For 16$ they were shy with the protein and needlessly burdensome with rice. I skipped the rice and left hungry. The Waitstaff was accommodating with my clients, and helpful with their frailty... But I must admit, this location is my least favorite of the three locations that I have been to. #1 far and away is the Somerville location. A truly great Thai Joint! #2 is Morristown #3 is Basking Ridge. Calling this place Thai-French is a stretch.. with NO french influences on Lunch menu and only a soup and an appetizer on dinner menu.. its kind of like calling Kim Kardashian an actress for her sex tape. The food here all lacks the subtle nuances of flavor that seem to be present at the other two.. perhaps this is just for lunch, as they cater to cheaper plates.. however every meal at Somervile and Morristown I am consistently impressed, where even the basic tom yam soup is perfumed with fish sauce and has layers of flavor beyond sweet and sour. Here in Basking Ridge each of my 4-5 visits have been the same, while ordering vastly different plates. Typical fast food thai... sugary sweet, one dimensional and Americanized , served in a nice dining room for above market prices... but the sink in the bathroom is so classy that they earned an extra star. read more

Pad thai was really good! My friend and I ordered the chicken pad thai (lunch comes with side salad), an extra side salad and 2 thai iced teas, and that total'd to like $24 which was honestly more than I was expecting. But I think it was maybe the extra salad? The staff was kind of serious lol not really smiling much, but was efficient so that was good. We always enjoyed Origin French Thai at the Somerville location where we used to live and the food was always excellent, the place was elegant and inviting albeit a bit dark, some say for mood lighting but I just think they are protecting the environment by saving on electricity, ha. Anyways, the Warren location, we did a delivery order, the food was great, it won over my heart again with both quantity and quality! We ordered chicken sandwich, chicken pad Thai and a curry dish, all came with side dishes of the day, plenty of food to go around with left overs! Each dish tasted great, hit the spots nicely! Good food. The table for two was a bit tight. The place is small and cozy. It was kind of quiet when we got in around 6pm. As the night went on, all tables were full. However, I enjoyed myself. I never had duck before. I sampled some and it was delicious. I ordered the Chilean Sea Bass. I had a Hazelnut flavored ice cream for dessert. Their food is quite tasty. The bathroom area is small and there is only one men's bathroom and one ladies bathroom. So if someone is already in there, you'll have to wait. This place is quaint and offers great food. Pleasantly surprised. Been here a long time ago, but haven't been back since there's alot of cheaper Thai alternatives in the area. Its got french inspirations though, so it is a little different. This time the specials included soft-shelled crab, prepared in 3 ways - spicy mango, garlic or basil. 3 of us ordered the 3 kinds, while the 4th ordered a simple pad see ew. Left the establishment with 4 completely cleared plates, and zero room for dessert. Very satisfying. My garlic crab had tons of spinach & veggies (this is a fantastic thing), tons of sauce, and nice bowl of aromatic onion rice to soak it all up at the end. The crab was lightly fried, but well coated in the flavoring for easy, effortless bites. It wasn't dominating in garlic, and had enough familiar thai tastes for a good mix. Been here three times now, twice for dinner and once for lunch. Origin is a well constructed upscalish Thai restaurant with great Asian decor and intimate dinner setting. I've always just come in small group of 2 or 3, but I've seen large parties as well. The food and service is superb. Very attentive wait staff and as far as I can tell, every one seems to be Thai, always a good sign in IMO. What to get: Apps: - Appetizer sampler: usually on the specials list, but be on the look out as they've had it both times and change up the mixture of apps. Great variety from curry puffs to duck salad, to tuna tartar - Thai ribs: great sweet and mildly spicy flavor, ribs could be a bit more tender of the flavors stand out. Mains: - Range grown chicken, grilled: one of the most tender chicken dishes I've had, don't be shy, getting the chicken can be a bold and unexpectedly good move. Comes with a variety of Thai dipping sauces for a full range of auxiliary flavors - Grilled seafood platter: expensive but you get a giant platter to share. comes with grilled mussels, squid, shrimp, large scallops, veggies. not bad, but I actually would not get this again. scallops and shrimp were excellent but could have gone without the dry mussels and squid. - Bangkok duck: exellent, crispy skin and flavorful but not too gamey duck. boneless and lots of meaty ducky goodness. Where it excels though is the curry sauce the duck is bathed in. - Royal Massasman curry: as with others reviewers, this is a must try for me. All the curries at Origin are where its at and where they excel the most. complex flavors with great creamy texture. Get a curry, start with this one. This place is a cut above! The Peking Duck Salad was downright amazing with big chunks of duck and a great flavor, they did a REALLY GREAT job on this. The Pad Thai was done perfectly, with all the flavors in balance. And, of course, they had a tasty Thai Iced Tea to top it off. The service is attentive, on point, and very pleasant... My coworkers and I have been to Origin a number of times and always really enjoy our meals. I have been for both lunch and dinner and you can expect the same quality and service no matter what time you go. The lunch menu is limited and does not offer all the same options as the dinner menu. So if you have something in mind that you want for lunch you might want to check the menu before going. Origin is located in a busy shopping center as there are not many restaurants or shops in that area. The parking lot has plenty of spots but if you go right during the peak of dinner or lunch time don't be shocked if you have to circle a few times. Origin is BYOB which is great and there is a wine store located right next door. Just beware the wine store is a bit pricey and the cheaper bottles are around $20. I have had most of the appetizers at Origin and love all of them. The Spring rolls and Chicken skewers are my favorite but you don't get many in an order. If going with a group you may need to order a few plates so everyone gets a taste. The Pad See Ew is my favorite! The sauce is sweet and rice noodles are cooked perfectly. Bok Choy, Chinese Broccoli and egg are mixed in the noodles with your choice of meat. I also get the chicken and thai basil stir fry which has a little kick but delicious. The Pad Ke Mao is also recommended but has a little kick if you like some spice. read more

I work right down the road and it's very convenient and food comes out fast for when you only have an hour lunch break. Lunch specials are greatly priced for a soup or salad and the entree. A Thai iced tea or Thai iced coffee in a to go cup goes really well on the side of their meals. I normally would get the Pad See Ew or their curries. Two great curries are their massaman and green. Stopped by for lunch. The ambience is like a spa with a very calming effect coming from the water feature in the middle of the restaurant. The lunch menu had a limited selection so we went with the Pad Gra Praw and Pad Kee Maow. While both dishes were seasoned well with large portion sizes and were moderately spicy, there was wilted lettuce in the Pad Kee Maow which was very unappetizing and quite bizarre to find in this dish. Service felt very rushed because they served us the accompanying cream of broccoli soup as an appetizer and then five minutes in, when we did not even get through the soup halfway, they brought out the entrees jostling between our soup bowls at the table. We were out in the area for a special occasion and happened to try out this place. It's unlikely we will be making the trip back just to revisit the dishes. read more

Lunch review. Lunch prices are in the $10-14 range for a variety of their dishes, pad thai, pad kee mao, or pad graw paw (hehe names are so funny). I have been to this location over 15 times, love the pad kee mao, comes with chicken and shrimp tossed over flat noodles with veggies and basil - delicious!!!! Sometimes I have ordered the big bowl, which is flat noodles in a sesame beef broth also amazing. Other dishes are okay but I prefer the two listed above. I have only been here at lunch and the prices are well within reason but I know for sure that the dinner prices which offer the same portion is double, double the price?!!?! It's nuts, so if you stick to dining at lunch, you will love this place too! read more
