"Breakfast is hard to screw up." Well, sort of. But I'll tell you that Orphan gets a lot right. Tasty, good presentation, great coffee and even nitrate-free bacon! The casual environment feeds the weekday brunch, welcoming staff who are always attentive and treat you like family more than a customer, and I loved the "2 Plus 2" (not on the menu) as a way to customize the breakfast experience for both salt and sweet. The coffee is part of the Naked family (as is Orphan), and it's okay. I usually get the medium roast, and it's been tasty. Orphan is tucked away in our neighborhood, but unfortunately for us, the word has obviously gotten out because they're ALWAYS serving a steady stream of customers, no matter the day of week or time of day. My lone suggestion would be to get rid of the ATM and step-up with the whole "no cards" policy. They should really take credit cards, there's too many options to transact that these days. read more

Orphans is one of my top breakfast restaurants. I highly recommend the breakfast tamales: two tamales covered in a green tomatillo sauce (the best), served with black beans, two always perfectly cooked eggs, sour cream, tomatoes, green onions, and cilantro. The flavors taste beautifully together and it is always a must! I also die over the cornmeal blueberry pancakes! Never have I had pancakes that create a festive party in my mouth! Cornmeal battered pancakes filled with fresh blueberries topped with butter and a scosche of fresh fruit, and the rim of the plate contains a fun design made of their homemade berry sauce. For those that complain: I have yet to have bad service here. Have I had servers who take my order, check on me, and give me the check no frills? Yes. But then again I didn't come here to be entertained by the staff. They do their job and that's all that I ask for. In regards to the price increase: minimum wage went up recently and will go up once again next year, hence...food cost will go up as well, duh. The flies: Flies suck and you can't prevent 100% of flies from coming into a busy restaurant when the doors keep opening. And if you sit outside to eat...flies are a risk you take, they live outside you know...again, duh. It does seem they have a UV fly light to help deter flies, but there is only so much you can do. I try to go somewhere new for breakfast every weekend and I just moved within blocks of Orphan so it was at the top of my list but I don't think I'll be going back. Things you should know: 1) I am able to walk over but the parking is nonexistent and you will risk getting a ticket; 2) they only accept cash; 3) this place is really popular (for some reason) so get there early. We got there at 9:30 and by the time we left there was a line out the door; and 4) there does not appear to be any booze served. This is a big deal to me. I like to have a Mimosa with brunch. I don't have the time and money to do a lot right now but going out for brunch is one of the few things I can do to treat myself and I expect mimosa's on Sundays. I also like bacon, a lot actually, and not one dish comes with bacon. Bacon is a "side" item that cost $2 for 2 strips of OK bacon. Talk about having a "deja vu menu." All the breakfast dishes seem to have the same ingredients... BORING. Also, I don't think any of the breakfast dishes have meat in them. If you want some meat with your grub, you have to get side order of your preferred meat selection and this will add an an additional $3 or $4 to your bill. read more

First and foremost, they don't accept credit cards. Cash & check only. I honestly don't care for their reason, if they think it makes them "vintage" or something, don't care. It's a matter of convenience. If I'm out looking for some good hardy breakfast and just happen to not have any cash on me (who does these days, really?), I'm not going to think "Hey, let's go to the place that doesn't accept credit or ATM cards!" Not having limitations on methods of payment is a great way to receive repeat business. That being said, I ordered the banana & blackberry pancakes. Pretty good, considering I don't normally dip over to the "mix fruit into my pancake mix" crowd that often (okay, never). My nephew had the plain pancakes which looked pretty good. So all in all, I'd take away 1 star for the method of payment nonsense and another star for being a little overpriced for just pancakes. They are somewhat redeemed, however, by the fact that they have an ATM in the restaurant that doesn't seem to charge a fee. - The parking situation on a busy weekend is atrocious. They do offer a small parking lot but it seems that all of the surrounding streets require permits (except for Sunday) and I saw two people get parking tickets while we were waiting for spot. - I've been there twice and the first time we went, the waiter was really aloof (don't love that) but the second time the waitress was super sweet. Both times the service was on the slow side. - They serve unfiltered tap water that, today, smelled like chlorine. The waitress was nice enough to get us another bottle to see if there was a difference. Alas, no -- it still smelled like chlorine. - The prices seemed pretty reasonable until my pesto scramble arrived and it was very small. I think I ate it in about 45 seconds....that's not enough food. Came here on a recommendation , haven't heard much of the place. Came on a Sunday late morning and it was packed. The wait time went by pretty fast, the location seem to be odd to me due to its located in a residential area, making the parking a bit tricky. The service was on point and super friendly. I was told by one of my best friends that this place was a must try so I randomly decided to check it out this morning! First of all, the location itself is so charming! Driving down the street, I fell in love with all the hovering trees making the perfect little bridge to my destination. Parking can be a little difficult yes, but that's how this area of Sacramento is...so it is what it is. First, I needed my coffee fix for the day so I decided to try their Coffee Con Panna which is Guatemalan coffee with real whipped cream (can you say YUM?! Cause I definitely did!) My friend told me to order either the Orphan French Toast or the Artichoke Scramble (I'm not saying these are the only best options, cause literally everything on the menu looks amazing!). I went with the Artichoke option this time but will definitely be back to try their Orphan French Toast! Portions are so generous and the quality really pulls through in the food! THE ROSEMARY BREAD THOUGH PEOPLE.....good gods of heavenly foods and all things right in the world, that bread is to die for!!!! I could've honestly ordered just that and been satisfied. MUST TRY! It's always friendly, albeit kind of slow. The last time we were in, there was a wait for tables and the staff had lost track of who was next in line to get a two-top. Once we were finally seated, it took awhile for someone to take our drink order, and then he forgot to bring our drinks to us. The drinks finally came out right before the food and a refill was never offered. The server seemed busy and crazed, which made a lazy Saturday brunch feel less than relaxing. Wow. LOVE this place. We showed up around 9, just before the main crush (see, having kids IS good sometimes - they get you to breakfast places early before all the DINK's and college kids) and had a seat pretty quick. Actually, our friends did, we were late - the kid pooped right when we put her in the car. We were seated in a booth directly adjacent to the front door. I never made it more than 10 feet in to this place so I couldn't tell you what it looked like. Dark colored upholstery, we were right by the nice corner windows, sweet coffee brewer (I think that's what it was) to the right of the entry. Our server was a cool guy. I did my typical thing where I make a joke that would be clever if I knew 100000000000 other people didn't also make it all the time (but I pull it off) and he responded sincerely, I think to disarm me, just before he mocked me the perfect amount. The table laughed, I laughed, well played. I think, looking back, I may actually have been blinded by the food. The coffee was fantastic - extremely smooth and great flavor. I had the avocado scramble, which rocked, and the pumpkin pancakes...holy. S. They were incredible. My wife had the verde platter, which she said was excellent. Our little one loved the fruit (the apples were SO good) and eggs we ordered her. Think about it like this: I saw some complaints about no liquor license here. You know what that means? You will not be disappointed!! I've gone several times and was extremely pleased with how much care and dedication goes into each plate. The boyfriend and I ordered freshly squeezed apple juice, single-serving drip Brazilian coffee, and amazing omelettes and breakfast burritos! The fruit included was beautifully laid out complete with kiwi, melon, apples, grapes, and oranges. YUM!! My sister ordered their raspberry and almond pancakes and WOW absolutely stunning. I've been here twice on weekdays between 10-11 and it's been amazing!!! I've gotten the sweet tamales both times which comes with avocado, salsa, 2 eggs and black beans. The portions may look small but for me it was just enough. Next time I go I've promised myself that I will try something new. The service I've gotten the past two times has been good, nothing out of this world special but it was just fine to me. The neighborhood is really random but super cute. Parking is horrible so that was the major downside of the trips. I would never ever ever come during the weekend. I've driven past on a Sunday and there was a line out the door and I can't even imagine what the parking situation would be like. Turkey, potatoes/zucchini, one egg, and cranberry sauce $11. The flavor was okay. Tamales were WAY too sweet - I couldn't finish it. Maybe if they did half sweet corn, half regular. The waitress offered me an extra side of sauce, which I accepted. Only to find out on our bill that they charge for it. $0.75 so no big deal, but its annoying not to know and the dish didn't really NEED more sauce. Boyfriend's serving was WAY too small for being an $11 special compared to mine $8 tamale breakfast. At most restaurants, you would expect the $11 special to be a bit more abundant to the $8. We decided to try breakfast here after reading about them being vegetarian friendly. Ordered the avocado scramble, the French toast and the platas verde. The food was all tasty and fresh but my favorite was the platas verde. Yummy!! Smothered in green sauce and eggs cooked perfectly. I've been here a handful of times and loved it. Friends have mentioned that they find the food bland but it tastes fresh and healthy to me. I can spice it up to my liking with salt pepper, salsa, or hot sauce. I'm glad they switched their coffee cups. The one I had on my first visit was too heavy for my wimpy wrists and I had a hard time drinking it. The news cups are much better. I recently heard that they're going to start serving lunch in the next couple of weeks. I'm excited about that for the days where I don't want to get out of bed until noon. Went here on a Tuesday around 10am for breakfast, not crowded at all and found parking right up front. Cute little place, even for children (we had our 8 month old with us). I ordered the naked pancakes (delicious) and my hubby ordered the avocado scramble (delicious)...portions are big so we shared. Most of all, the price was very reasonable, under $20 for two people. I'm sold on the place and I'd definitely go back! Came here for breakfast and the French toast I ordered was dry to the point to seeming to be stale. The cook didn't let it sit in the egg mixture long enough to soak in the goodness so it was just like a pressed cinnamon roll without any flavor. It's our first and last time there as the staff inside seemed so busy that they feel almost indifferent. Finally checked out Orphan this morning and it was pretty much exactly what I was expecting - healthy food, decent portions, and a slight hippie vibe..in an upscale way. My friend and I dined outside and had wonderful service. I got their homemade granola with yogurt and fresh fruit - it was deeeelicious! I was a lot fuller than I expected to be.
