I say this, because later in the morning, we saw that they were packed. They don't have the biggest menu of options, but what they do have, we enjoyed. As someone who is a big fan of menudo, I had to order it for desayuno. I got some, and was happy with it. I got some hominy and I think parts of pata. It was a nice kick to start off my day. It was solidly flavored and hot. Additionally, I also got a fresh jugo de naranja. It was good, and I would definitely order again. It was a bit pricy, so be aware for those fond of fresh orange juice. The decor was really cute, and they have a nice picturesque outdoor area. I really enjoyed the coffee and food at this new eatery downtown. The decor was nostalgia in a way that I got to see a 90s version of what a traditional Mexican home might look like. The owner happened to be there and was very helpful in our drink selection. We got the horchata latte with foam. We love to try chilaquiles from diffente places, these chilaquiles weren't the best we had tried, but they were very good. The service is good, people are very friendly. The reason why I gave 4 stars is because the place is very small and you have to wait for availability of tables. The other point is that we had to wait little bit more than 45 minutes to get our food. We noticed that people that ordered after us got their food before us. Best chilaquiles I've had in a long time!! I got the green sauce, and let me tell you...the ratio of asada, eggs, and chips/sauce was perfect. They also serve it with a piece of bread, which was a nice little bonus because who doesn't love extra carbs? My boyfriend got the red sauce version, and it was also so tasty! We came for lunch, and it wasn't too crowded, so we found a table right away. You order first and then grab a table, so the whole process was super quick and easy. I also ordered the hot horchata latte and I would honestly come back just for that! It wasn't overly sweet and had the perfect amount of cinnamon. Really loved this spot. The location is nostalgic and beautifully decorated, it truly feels like you're stepping into your abuelita's house in Mexico. Such a cozy, welcoming vibe. They offer Café de Olla, traditional Mexican coffee. It is on the sweeter side and pre-made, but still very delicious. I stopped by for a cafecito mid-afternoon and there was plenty of seating with fast service, especially for a Sunday, which was nice. They do offer breakfast items, though I didn't get a chance to try them this time, definitely something to come back for. One thing to note is that the restrooms are shared/connected through the alley with nearby establishments. It would be nice to have an additional restroom, especially during busy times. Floor's were dirty, tables were dirty and unbussed when we walked in at 11am on a Sunday morning, and the music was wayyyyy too loud (like club level loud) for a casual brunch spot? Like Cantina Alley needs to chill out and make the clear distinction between making this spot a cozy eatery n cafe or a party brunch spot. Tables were sparse indoors and outdoors. The outdoor dining area is wayyyyy nicer than inside, which is dirty and loud and too tight of a space for the crowd it gets. We had to clean our own table of the dirty dishes and crumbs because nobody else did it. I couldn't hear my party talk at all because it was loud or the names of the drinks the server was calling out. The coffee drinks should be served to our table, as is the food. What's the point of sitting at the table if we have to grab our coffee first and then sit and be served. Very disappointed. Food was fine. Not returning and don't recommend lol read more

It tasted like actual horchata which when horchata is made into any type of coffee drink can be very hit or miss so I was pleasantly surprised. This was unfortunately a huge letdown for me. I was super excited to try out some Mexican pastries and hot chocolate for the first time. When I came in, the staff were very friendly and welcoming. They gave me a complimentary coffee and concha. I didn't drink the coffee because it usually makes me jittery, but the concha was a bit lackluster. It was subtle in flavor, but I mostly tasted the powdered sugar (or whatever it was) on the outside. It was also a little dry. I bought one of the pan dulces (ojo de pancha) and a hot chocolate. The pancha was hard as a rock and lacked flavor. I wasn't a fan of the hot chocolate either. It was less of a chocolate taste and more of the spices they had in it. We stopped in looking for coffee and ordered a cold horchata latte and a hot specialty drink (forgot the name). Unfortunately, neither was what we expected -- the "latte" seemed more like pre- brewed coffee with sweet flavoring instead of a true espresso-based drink. The hot one was overly sweet and we couldn't get through even a third of it. That said, the breakfast dishes coming out of the kitchen looked great, so we need to come back and give the food a try next time. They have cute indoor seating and nice outdoor patio as well. I initially saw this place on the news, then found it it was trending on TikTok, and had to come check this place out. Abuela's Midtown is a beautiful cafe/brunch spot housed in a historic blue Victorian home. The interior is decorated to feel very homey, and definitely gives you the vibe of stepping into your abuela's home. They have plenty of outdoor seating as well-- a patio out front and two table areas on the side of the building. I love all the bright colors in this cafe, because they do it just right. Bright colors, warm ambience, making it a cozy spot. Right when I walked in, I was greeted immediately. The two people helping me up front at the register were very nice and helpful when I asked about some of the menu items. I asked about the cafe de olla (something I've never tried) and they let me try a sample of it! It's very cinnamony and they serve this to you in a traditional clay mug if you're not getting it to go. The red chilaquiles did not disappoint either. So, if you're like me and your nose starts running at the first hint of heat, I recommend requesting fewer onions when you order. I also tried Café de Olla, which had a lovely spiced flavor, but I forgot to mention that I usually prefer my coffee less sweet (I often sub Splenda or other sugar alternatives). So, for anyone who's watching their sugar intake or managing diabetes, be sure to ask for sugar on the side or inquire if they have sweetener options. The ambiance at Abuela's is truly something special- cozy, cultural, and charming. The decor is thoughtful and inviting, capturing that comforting "at grandma's house" vibe perfectly. Seating is a bit limited due to the space, but they offer indoor and outdoor options, which is always a plus. A very cute, small spot in midtown Sacramento. The place offers a few tables inside and out. We really wanted to try the chilaquiles torta but they unfortunately were out of the bread, maybe we got there late. So we ended up getting the tamal con huevo. The tamal, egg and beans were good. I did think they put just a bit too much salsa on the plate, I felt as though they were attempting to make the plate look more full than it was. This visit has been well overdue! First off, their location is in prime midtown so parking is going to be a a bit of pain. The interior is beautiful and feels so nostalgic for all Hispanic folks. Plenty of seating inside with some space in the back as well. Staff were super friendly and really take the time to make sure you understand what your food comes with so that there are no surprises. I order the chilaquil torta, cafe de la olla. Warning though, your food can take up to 20-25 mins to be served to you so be prepared for that especially when it's busy. The cafe de la olla was delicious and not overly sweetened which I appreciated. However, the torta didn't come with much chilaquiles. I really wish it did as it definitely would have made a difference with the overall taste of the dish. I do wish they gave it to me in the cute cups for dining in, but no harm, no foul. I did order the chilaquiles, half rojo/red and half green/Verde, because I know my spice tolerance is low. I probably should have just done all Verde, but I do enjoy the flavor of the rojo sauce. Also, I could have also probably remedied the spice level with asking for additional creama. I was enjoying my convo, so I did not get up to get any. I did appreciate the toasted bread they also adorned the plate with. I ordered a fried egg, but I ended up with an over easy egg. Comes in choice of red sauce or green and I chose the green which had a kick to it. It was a big portion, definite for sharing. I enjoyed their coffees very much. Tried the hot horchata latte and also ordered the Pancho Pantera Mocha. I like both of them but the winner for me was the Pancho Pantera Mocha. It was rich and smoky. Nicely sweetened and had some cinnamon. The food and coffee was served pretty quick and the staff here checked on us often. While there is no shortage of Mexican food in Sacramento, Abuela's has captured a special aspect of our cuisine-- Abuela's food and the loving touches reflected through the whole space, that as a Mexican kid growing up going to my Abuela's house, takes me right back to her kitchen table- down to the decorative vinyl tablecloths on the tables!! The service is lovely, eager to please to make sure you have a great experience. And the food-- excellent cafe de olla and the chilaquiles are just like the ones at home. Freshly prepared, crispy tortillas, not over-sauced (a mistake a lot of places make!), perfectly cooked eggs on top, drizzled with a little crema, a sprinkling of white onions and cilantro, a light shower of queso fresco and a piece of bolillo (Mexican baguette ) is the perfect last touch to a plate that needs nothing else.
