Despite many reviews to the contrary, this place is over hyped. That said, the appetizer we started with was fantastic (Hu CHU - Blackened tuna with 7 kinds of pepper, goat cheese and honey wasabi). However, from that point the food went downhill from just okay, to plain uneatable. Second dish was the GO CHU (Escolar topped with Jalapeno and garlic chips). The fish tasted a little old, but overall, it was a nice plate. Given the choice though, I would take the garlic topped escolar from Imperia over this version any day. Final dish was an avocado based roll that was supposed be topped with torched escolar. In my mind, I was imagining something similar to what's served at DKs sushi as the parting gift, however, the reality of what was served some was type of ground escolar, shaped to resemble a piece of slice fished, that was then torched until it was speckled black. It tasted awful and we ended up leaving it mostly untouched. What was most disappointing about this dish is that at no point did the waitress, or the menu, provide any indication that it would be ground fish. And let's face it... ground fish masked to resemble it's sliced brethren is just plain gross. Aside from that, the service was reasonable and the ambiance was nice (though very similar to every other strip mall sushi restaurant). I would give these guys a second shot based on the Hu Chu appetizer alone, but I'm in no hurry to do so anytime soon. read more

As we sat down with our little ones, We were told that we only have one hour to eat due to some pseudo restaurant rule and urged to order soon. (She didn't tell other customers about this rule)The check came before we finished our food. And the older waitress had a terrible attitude. She looked at us as inconvenience. My husband loves the Dolsot Bimimbab and it is reasonably priced. The kimchi is great with not too much fish sauce. It's a hidden little gem in the corner of the shopping center near Half Price books. After your done reading stop by for a bite to eat. It's a bit dark but it's nice to help you relax and enjoy your meal. A good place for happy hour or a date night or to get a bite to eat for some good sushi. Nice decor and clean and you see your sushi being made. I went during happy hour and the choices for the tools were good. Some of the rolls are half rolls which is good I think that way you can try more the items on the happy hour menu. I picked the Alaska, Eel and Mister Jj. The eel was good, nice sauce. Alaska was nice and the salmon was fresh and light tasting did not have a fishy smell. Mister Jj was delicious, spicy tuna was good and spicy able to enjoy the flavors, I saved it for last. Service attendants were very nice. I would come back to try other items on the menu. Only gave 3 stars, for now would like to try the rest of the menu. read more

Dined here with family and friends. The waitress was dreadfully unwelcoming! Had a permanent scorn plastered to her face upon seeing us. She made the whole experience of dining there awkward. We were a family with a toddler and with no sign of respect she keeps saying 'you better control your kid' and the kid was just drumming her chopsticks together and giggling. Do not by any chance bring your kids here. It is not a family restaurant. The food was not good too. I have never tasted a kaarage drier and crispier that what they served me. It tasted more like chicharones. Food is mediocre and nothing at all close to what it's suppose to taste like! read more

Surprisingly nice sushi for being so far north in a strip mall. Defintely top 5 sushi spots in Austin. We all know it's tough to find decent fish in central Texas especially if you're used to NYC or LA quality. Can't expect uchi, but it's a nice local spot with solid dishes. Fish was fresh, cut nicely, and clean. Everything came out well presented and well executed. They also have a pretty extensive menu for both Japanese and Korean food. I've only been for lunch and I can say that it definitely isn't a bad place to get your bento box or sushi fix. The restaurant has about 10 or 12 tables and was about half full the last time I went. R&B played through the speakers and we sat next to the TV so we could watch Sportscenter. It's kind of rare to see a TV in a place that serves sushi. The server was as normal as any server, nothing good nothing bad. Their primary job is to take our order, make sure everything came out okay, and refill our drinks. And that's what happened, all fine and dandy. The lunch menu prices step into that discomfort zone of where you realize you're paying over $10 for lunch. In comparison to other sushi restaurants around the area, osaka was a dollar or two more expensive for the same entree in your bento box. The sushi lunch specials were just a bit more than other places as well. In the end I went with the bento box because you get to pick your entree plus one of 3 choices of sushi (dynamite roll, marinated crab roll, or 2 nigiri and 4 california rolls). The soup and salad were standard fare. The bento box was exactly what you ordered with a half or a third cup of rice and some vegetable tempura. But after I tasted everything, I noticed that everything was just average. The sushi was good, the shrimp tempura was average, the vegetables were average. Osaka may be better for dinner but I've never been. But for lunch, there are places with the same or better tasting food for a dollar or two less. read more

After eating here, I understand why this is such a highly rated restaurant. The food is good. They serve you huge portions of seafood , the staff is attentive and friendly, and it's clean and comfortable. My sister ordered the omakase and I ordered the chirashi. Chirashi was super good with large chunks of seafood and I loved their sushi rice. The omakase, on the other hand, was a delight after delight. (1) wagyu beef (ok - we can tell it was just really good beef) (2) sashimi (3) roll (4) tempura ice cream!! Yum. As many Japanese restaurants here in austin, this is Asian fusion (Korean and Japanese) restaurant that caters both traditional menu items. The reviews raved the it great sushi experience but I still was weary trying it as I hadn't had any good Japanese food that was prepared by non Japanese chefs or who is trained in Japanese cuisine. To be safe we opted for Korean and Japanese bbq items. Such as chicken teriyaki, galbi and yukgaejang (spicy beef soup). I can that their Korean food is pretty decent and good. Their side dishes taste fresh and well seasoned and the soup just hit the right spot. Was delicious. Also galbi has lots of meat and nice seasoning (not too overwhelming). Chicken teriyaki was just okay. Tasted too much like Korean chicken bbq especially with all the vegetables and bean sprouts they add. This was my first time visiting. I was looking for a place in Austin that served a nice Chirashi bowl; something varied and decently priced. When I got there, it was about 4:30PM and I had the entire place to myself! It's fairly small, but the decor and atmosphere was nice. I was promptly taken care of and placed my order. I was sat at the bar and watched my food being prepared. Everything was clean and the chef expertly sliced and organized my chirashi in an artistic fashion. I wish I had known all of the fish that was in there, but it was all so good! I'm sure if I asked, he would have explained each fish. But I gobbled it down, regardless of what it was. I underestimated the size of the bowl. There was so much rice and fish! I'd definitely only suggest ordering this if it's dinner or you are reeeally hungry (which I was). For years, I have been trying to explain to friends and acquaintances why I go to Supercuts. No one ever seems to buy that someone as astronomically high-maintenance as me would ever be comfortable with a 15-minute, $15 haircut. They all expect me to be propped up at a palatial salon, dropping the GDP of a sub-Saharan nation, all so a master stylist can fawn over me while muscled men in loin cloths feed me peeled grapes and sweep up my locks of hair with solid gold brooms. I mean, I've done all that before. But I'm exaggerating about the brooms. I never really had an acceptable answer that made any sense...until tonight, when I walked two steps to dine at Osaka Mansun after my haircut was complete at the Anderson Mill Supercuts, and I met my mom for dinner. Let me explain. We sat down and were immediately offered drinks and menus. The sushi menu was expansive, and I figured out they served both Japanese and Korean food. Somehow, for the briefest of moments, I felt like I was cheating on both Midori Sushi and Korea House at the same time. I felt like such a cad, until I realized Osaka Mansun was its own separate entity. We could have our own relationship. I opted for the Bento Box Dinner, and chose beef bulgogi to accompany my shrimp and vegetable tempura, steamed rice, 4 pieces of California Roll and 3 pieces of the chef's choice sushi. The miso and salad were both excellent starters, and as I waited for my meal, I couldn't help but take a look around. The space is small, but incredibly cozy. Lighting is low, accentuated only by lanterns and tea light candles on each table. It was both smaller and less "commercial" in its feel than I had assumed all those years of walking past it, but never stopping in. I started to feel foolish about that. Especially as I saw fresh, colorful seafood towers pass by, and a man eating a delicious-looking whole fish and steaming bowl of soup. He enthusiastically conversed with the chef at the bar, and bought him several shots of sake in appreciation for the apparently wonderful fare that was sent his way. It was quite heartening. My dinner did not disappoint. The tempura was varied and abundant; the tuna and salmon sushi was fresh; and the tender bulgogi was marinated perfectly, sautéed with just the right amount of onion and mushroom. It was just the right balance of food, and just the right amount to feel satisfied. Service was prompt and friendly throughout. I felt like giving the tempura fried ice cream a whirl, and it, too, was fantastic. Both warm and cold, it was definitely off the "truly authentic" path, but I enjoyed it. So--here's why I am really gone on this place. To me, I didn't feel like I was in a strip mall in NW Austin. Maybe it was the evening sky; maybe it was the flickering neon sign above the door; maybe it was because we were literally the only white people in the entire place...but I could have sworn I had been transported to Japan, and had entered a little out-of-the-way restaurant in a Tokyo alley. Maybe I'm overselling this--but since I had met Mom for dinner, I had her opinion to listen to as well. And she thought the place was just darling. After all, she had lived in Japan; if that was her impression, I was willing to believe it. She reminded me of the portion of her childhood spent in that country: the kind, doting Japanese maids who would take her to play in beautiful gardens; the music and art; and her intricate pink and red kimono lined in a gorgeous hot pink silk that she can still remember to this day. If no one else feels like they're in Japan, maybe it was her memories that this place elicited that took me there. It was all fabulous. I knew about halfway through my meal I'd be back. Again, and again, and again. So...why do I go to Supercuts? Because even after all these years, if I hadn't...I never would have found Osaka Mansun. So THERE. 5 Stars for Osaka Mansun! read more

This really needs to be said. Yelp reviews for Asian restaurants are not very helpful when it comes to an accurate taste for good, quality Asian food. I follow Yelp on everything but it's been about only 10% right in the Asian foods department. The 4.5 stars that this restaurant has received is so undeserved that it really boggles my mind. I may not be the complete expert for Asian cuisine but I do know fresh quality sushi or good Korean food when I taste it. I do love to dine whenever I can, Asian is one of my favorites. The 4.5 stars really does a disservice to Yelpers but maybe that's because I've had Asian food at its best (Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles/Garden Grove, Japan). The reason why I'm making such a big deal of the 4.5 stars this restaurant has received is that it is SO far off. I've had sushi at a good handful of places in Austin and this rates in the bottom quarter. We had 3 happy hour rolls, beef bulgogi and bibimbap. This costed $50 which included tip. I felt like someone stole a Jefferson out of my wallet after that. To break the 2 stars down that I gave this restaurant. 1 star is for the speed that the food is brought out. 1 star is for the friendly staff and sushi chefs that try to engage with the customers at the sushi bar. But, unfortunately, the grade ends there. The food is very average. Sushi is definitely NOT fresh. I've had fresher sushi at Todai. Happy hour rolls do give a good amount but, again, the fish is just not that fresh. For 5 - 6.50 a roll, I swear I've seen better deals elsewhere and the fish was fresher. I have nothing against the people who do go here or the business itself, but I feel very strongly against the 4.5 star rating. read more

I have dined here on countless times. the place here is usually busy and often somewhat under staffed, which isn't usually a big deal because the service USUALLY is medioker and i never thought it was that big of a deal to complain. I arrived 11.55 am , i had placed my order well before 12.05 placed my order of 2 lunch bento boxes to go. 12.50 I had still not received anything. I wanted to cancel my order and have my money returned at 12.50 and was told by the older women to wait because it was coming. Waiting anything longer than 30 minutes for a to go order really isn't acceptable. any business selling any product needs to 1. keep the customer informed there is/may be a delay so they have the option to stay or leave 2. anything longer than 45min which is CRAAAZY to wait that long, should get some kind of compensation.half off? free seaweed salad? You can not inconvenience your customers that much, get them to pay for the to-go , tip for the to-go ( which i did ) and expect them to be ok with waiting close to an hour. If you value your time, or dont have longer than one hour for lunch.. make sure you ask about the wait.. because they sure as hell wont tell you. read more

I am a big fan of Half Price Books, so I've passed by this restaurant for years and I've never stopped in to try a bite. That being said, I've always enjoyed the smells of Korean food! One night, after a good book purchase, a friend and I decided to stop in and give it a shot. We had the following: Beef Bulgogi - Excellent, sweet and a fair portion size. Better than average, by far. Chicken Bulgogi - Sweeter than the beef, but very well executed. Extremely moist. The Korean sides are also extremely delicious. Traditional, nothing out of the ordinary. Combination Fried Rice - Extremely flavorful, but I wish they had a smaller serving other than just entree. Gyoza - Traditional and delicious. We also enjoyed quite a bit of sushi, including Mister JJ. They are all very fresh and full of flavor. I'd avoid anything to basic and try to be a bit more adventurous because they really are wonderful at creating some odd, but delicious rolls. All in all, it's not the best sushi I've ever had (NY, LA, Asia, etc), but if you go during Happy Hour, it is unbeatable in Austin. read more

Just got back from Osaka. Wow! It was better than I expected. We normally go to Midori, but thought we'd try something new. Their fish is fresher than Midori's, but Midori's atmosphere is preferable. Now that I live in BFE, Osaka Mansun has proven a quick and inexpensive haven for my Japanese and Korean cravings. I try to save my sushi experiences for when I visit the coasts. But sometimes, a girl has a break down. I can't say it's the best sushi I've had. It's pretty satisfying taste-wise, but the texture leaves much to be desired. I got the Sho (8 assorted nigiri and 1 roll). The roll is always the worst part, but other than that, the variety was nice and the fish (with the exception of the tuna which tasted like ice) were all fine. I prefer their Korean dishes. I'm admittedly a tourist when it comes to Korean food. I don't venture much outside of bibimbaps, chigae and spicy black cod. But I do love the spicy squid dolsotbibimbap! Again, this squid texture is a bit rubbery, but it tastes fantastic! I found the service to be OK. I'm not looking for friendly, I'm looking for expedient. read more

I had blacklisted this restaurant about 5 years ago after a mediocre meal. My parents kept raving about it every time they came to town, and finally convinced me to give it another shot. I am now officially converted. I have eaten there twice in the last couple weeks, and the food and service are both terrific. The first time I was there I ordered a Bi-Bim-Bop mixed seafood dish, which was served in a stoneware container. It was terrific. The food was all properly cooked, and the vegetables tasted nice and fresh. My mom decided to split a tempura dinner with my 5 yo daughter. There was so much food that the two of them could not even finish half of it. The tempura I sampled from them was delicious, and the batter was nice and light. My dad and I each had an Ahi tower as an appetizer, and it was downright awesome. I liked the place so much that I came back there for lunch a couple days later with my daughter. I ordered a sushi lunch special, which was also terrific. My only minor complaint was that they only serve a limited menu for lunch. The prices of the dishes vary greatly. Good dinner entrees can be had for as little at 12 bucks, but much higher end fare is available for those who want to pay for it. My aforementioned bi-bim-bop was about 13 bucks, and was a bargain. The tempura dish was also cheap as dirt and an excellent value. This is a great place to go if you are in mixed company where some folks want a cheap meal, and others want to go high end. The service is absolutely wonderful. All the staff is very friendly and attentive, and are knowledgeable about the food. Again, I am now a convert, and would recommend this place to anyone! read more

Huuuuuge menu with a lot of neat stuff you don't see at a lot of other japanese places! I got a sushi roll and a beef/egg bowl. Both were good... and cheap. Service was attentive and friendly even though we came in just a hair before closing time. The only good way to eat the beef/egg bowl was to hold it up and shovel it in... deliiiicious. Too much food though, I couldn't finish it. Pretty much liked everything here. Looking forward to giving it another shot and exploring more of the menu. read more

We love this place. We are repeat customers of about 20+ times. We've tried the majority of the sushi restaurants in the 10 mile vicinity and this is our favorite. Service has always been friendly too and I like the chill low-key environment. They have great happy hour pricing. Simply the best sushi experience I've ever had. Until today I thought I had to leave Texas to get really great sushi and I couldn't be happier to be found mistaken. We went on a Wednesday for happy hour on a whim (OK, due to the Yelp reviews) and it was so good we couldn't wait to come back with friends (which we did 2 days later). The high standards the chef sets for the food are very obvious in the quality of the fish, its presentation, and the variety of unique dishes on the menu. When we originally came for HH my wife had the 7 pepper tuna as a piece of nigiri and said it was one of the best pieces of sushi she had ever eaten. Today we ordered a plate of it as an appetizer, twice, and as part of the sashimi plate because it was that good: (very) lightly seared tuna w/ 7 types of pepper topped w/ goat cheese (which I typically don't like) and drizzled w/ a honey wasabi sauce that I would've licked off the plate (if no one was looking, of course). The four of us split the large sashimi sampler (32 pieces for $60, not bad at all given the quality). Every piece of every type was delicious, and for the first time I could correlate the importance of the cut to the mouth-feel of each bite; not your typical little uniform wedges. We were also interested in trying the Korean food so we had bento boxes of the beef and pork bulgogi. Each had its own distinct flavor: the pork being a little more tangy/spicy in a red sauce while the beef was a little sweeter in a more brown sauce. I had also forgotten how nice it was for tempura to actually be warm when it arrived on your plate; the shrimp was especially good as was the dipping sauce. I thought we were done while washing the meal down w/ some Asahi Black (Shiner Black/Guinness-y) but my buddy's wife had been eyeing the "banana choco eggroll w/ ice cream" on the chalkboard all night, so we obliged. And I'm glad we did. Warm caramelized bananas fried inside an eggroll wrapper, split 4 ways around a huge scoop of vanilla with some real (coconut-infused?) whipped cream in between, and topped with chocolate syrup. Like all the ones before it, that plate also left very, very empty. Finally, you can't have a great meal without great service. Our server Kyle and the rest of the staff were extremely helpful, attentive, and gracious. They made us feel like "regulars", which is what I believe we will be from now on. read more

A few weeks ago I stopped by Osaka Mansun on on Anderson Mill. The best part about this place is it's proximity to my apartment. The sushi was pretty good! The wait staff was nice and very helpful. They did bring out the wrong dish though. However, once I pointed out the error they quickly replaced it with the right order. Osaka is a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant located in a shopping center off 183. The restaurant is cute and they play Asian hip-hop/pop music. I really enjoyed it! The food is reasonably priced and, as I said earlier, pretty tasty. If you're in the area, check it out! read more
