The food was good, prices reasonable but....service? Almost non-existence. First off, we did not sit at the Sushi Bar where I'm sure we would've received better service but alas, a table it was. We both ordered bentos which comes with some rice, wasabi, ginger, 4 pieces of california rolls, tempura, and 3 pieces of sushi (eel, salmon, and white tuna), Chef's choice, and then your choice of protein (mackeral & short rib). The bentos were delicious, fresh even, and portions were just enough to feel satisfied, not too full and we didn't leave hungry. Only downside was the service. Upon being seated, my boyfriend and I weren't greeted for 20 minutes. No "hello", no drinks, no nothing. That was a turnoff. We even had to flag our server down for the bill after we had finished eating for a good ten minutes or so. Food is good, service is blah. Willing to go back to see how their happy hour is. Maybe next time we'll sit at the bar! The sushi chefs seem to be more hospitable than the actual servers. read more

We went here for my birthday dinner. The variety of special rolls is spectacular. Choo Choo rolls, Valentines rolls, Volcano rolls, Tuna Tower...I know that's a lot of food, we'd order more if our tummy could handle all. Daughter ordered shrimp tempura, the best evaaah she said. Chef Choo, thanks for a yummy birthday meal. Very reasonably priced for the fresh sushi selection and great service. I think if he opens up a martini bar, I might just make this one of my favs. One unforgettable note too: I accidentally drained my fancy car's battery (yes I was texting at parking lot & updating facebook status with sushi photos, sat radio full blast, didn't have the engine run. I came with 9 people, and we were seated very quickly. Our orders were taken very quickly as well, however the experience went downhill from there. Our food took about an hour to come out - only after I complained that the food was taking so long. I've been to Korean, sushi, and Japanese restaurants with bigger parties and it did not take an hour. If I hadn't complained about how long the wait was, it would have taken over an hour for the food to come out. My friend's japchae took an additional 20 minutes to finish. I ordered the spicy tofu soup which wasn't that great (Odaku Sushi has a much better version of this). My friends ordered the galbi, bulgogi, and japchae which were good. Then, when it came time to split the checks, the waitress messed up two of the checks. When notified of her mistake, she complained in an annoyed tone that she would have to recalculate the totals and didn't want to do that. Then on top of that, my friend ordered the pork bulgogi and was charged for the beef bulgogi (the more expensive item). When my friend pointed this out, the waitress then stated in an annoyed tone, "It's only $1," and refused to change the check. Oh, and I also called the restaurant ahead of time to get an estimated wait time, and the person snapped "This isn't Osaka," into the phone. When we called again at the restaurant just to see if the number was really wrong on the yelp page, the phone rang and somebody picked up. First and last time I will ever go back here. The quality of food isn't enough to warrant the extremely rude service I had. read more

Ok Ok Ok. Here is the scoop... Pros : ALMOST as good as Uchi and Uchiko. They have a few items on the sushi menu that are the closest attempts at creating uchi/uchiko genious that I have found and are fantastic! Price is also a plus. Nowhere near as expensive as uchi and uchiko and nowhere near the wait time. Why do I compare it to Uchi/Uchiko? Becuase IMO those are the platinum standards. Desert!!! OMG the desert here is LIGHT YEARS better than Uchi/Uchiko. Fried ice cream was not only amazing to look at (I had to take a picture) but was even better scarfing down. Uchi and Uchiko try to think to hard when it comes to desert and end up making a mockery of it to be frank. The deserts I have had here were the exact opposite. Cons : Ummm... slightly less yummy than Uchi? I've been eating at this restaurant for 20 years and it's still one of my favorites. In fact, Osaka is where I was first introduced to sushi back in 1993. They've had some ups and downs, but it seems in the past 3 or 4 years they've reinvigorated their menu as well as upgraded their sushi quality. Perhaps it's the articulate nature of the newer chefs that demand a higher quality experience. Whatever they're doing, it's working. I've eaten at sushi restaurants all over the US and I can tell you that Osaka's quality and service are up there with some of the best. For such a small unimpressive venue, they deliver excellent results. I've eaten here too many times to count and the most recent experiences have been the best. The Uni I tried last time was sweet and tender and delightful. The Uni at any restaurant is going to be hit or miss, but it seems every time I've tried it at Osaka, it's been perfectly prepared and tasted exactly as I expected it to. The chefs put extra care into their work, which shows in taste and presentation. One thing I miss however is the traditional Koto music they used to play. It made the dining experience sort of like meditation while enjoying the onslaught of food porn. It also transported my auditory senses into another culture, further extending the experience beyond just food. It would be awesome if they could just play that music for me when I go to visit, then after I'm gone they can put on whatever main stream stuff they're playing now. I frequently recommend this restaurant to my friends and family. It's a place that I have established many great memories over the years that will remain close to my heart. I'm grateful for Osaka and I hope they continue to flourish as one of the longest standing sushi restaurants in Austin. Osaka Mansun is another great north Austin sushi bar. Happy hour runs weekdays from 5-7. HH nigiri was $2/piece or less. $3 beers, calamari for under $5, cheap soup and salad, and cheap rolls. The escolar was probably our favorite. Tried the salmon belly, which was a lot lighter than expected. Also tried octopus for the first time as a nigiri piece...pretty much tasted like you would expect. The salad was a lot more substantial than most salads you get at similar places. The atmosphere is a little less kitschy than most. The floorplan is a little crowded, but it is a small space so I understand the need to cram things together. The normal dinner menu also boasted a large selection of traditional Japanese and Korean dishes, but we didn't give them a try since we were there for happy hour. Went there the other night with a friend. Ill be honest my expectations were not high. As a vegetarian I often feel that there are so many non-veg meals that can easily be translated into vegetarian versions. I love food.! I just choose not to eat meat or fish. So when it came to Osaka, I was ecstatic to find not only did their menu have interesting veggie roll options, but that they were able to offer a tofu Dolsot Bibimbab with delicious red pepper paste sauce!! There the joy from digging into this satisfying dish, it was tasty and a serious portion for the price. i was totally stuffed without even finishing. The service is friendly and efficient. Tried Osaka for the first time, surprising since it's been here for years and so have I, and thought it was pretty darn good. Mom and I wanted sushi somewhere in the area but a new place. Friends threw out a few ideas including Tomo (one of my favs already) but we didn't want to spend a ton - not that sushi is ever cheap. Side thought: Why is that? In the states it's like a catch 22 - we want to eat healthy but it's more expensive. Why does it cost more to sell food with no added crap than it does to sell the food with preservatives and g-d knows what else in it? (Okay, end rant.) Pricing wasn't bad. There were several cool options for sushi alone, both hot and cold rolls, plus they have Korean and Japanese entrees. Pretty exciting! We had one of the hot (baked) sushi rolls that of course I cannot remember the name of now. I highly recommend trying baked sushi if you've never had it - ask the waiters for recommendations too, that's how we picked and it was great! And we had the Bibimbab (Korean entree) also recommended by the waiter - good and super fun to eat with all the different side dishes to incorporate. If you've never done Korean entrees it's also something everyone should try once. I soooo want to go back and try the Cham-Chi (Ahi Tuna Tower). It looked awesome! read more

Great Price Fresh Creative Rolls Friendly accessible staff Those three things are the reason my girlfriend and I have hit this place up for 6 Saturdays straight. From the moment you walk in the staff is attentive and make sure you never wait on anything. We have tried 1-2 new rolls each week and all have been incredible (especially the baked rolls). Nothing has ever been fishy or bland. Everything pops with flavor. If that wasn't enough we always get our food in under five minutes. Been here several times, especially for lunch. Service is pretty fast and even if you're not a huge sushi fan, there's plenty of good stuff to eat. I especially like the Dynamite Roll, it has cooked seafood and some other stuff, but no raw fish. Really good. Just a little pricey, but worth it. My wife and I have been coming here for years, and it is one of the most consistent, excellent, and affordable sushi places in Austin. I went today for lunch break with 5 people. the service was friendly and fast. Everyone got the lunch specials. I tried the sushi E with rainbow roll. It came with soup and salad (the ginger dressing was really good) Next time i would ask for no shrimp, as it was a bit chewy. I've frequently Osaka for several years now, and I'm always been flipping back and forth between five stars and three... (This review is only for the sushi and not for the Korean food!) We sat at the bar often enough to actually known the sushi chef, (very nice man from Japan!) and found the sushi to be incredibly fresh and delicious. We went there often enough to get a free sushi roll on my Dad's birthday! This chef was the owner of the restaurant, and responsible for the five stars I want to give. We always got a plate of sushi, two or three rolls, and some bento boxes. Pretty fresh and fast. Fast forward, a year and several months. This chef sold the restaurant, left and there's a new chef in town. The food was okay, not as fresh, not as well crafted, and I got twenty dollars stolen by the waiter. Long story short, I went with some friends, we all paid by cash, double counted the total twice (Bill was ~$150?) and the waiter says we're short a twenty. We didn't want to make a big deal, but we were definitely pissed. Considering we were all math nerds, we're pretty sure we can count bills. Plus, he had a sneaky smile on his face. I didn't come back for a while because of this event and the degrading sushi quality. Came back unexpectedly last month for dinner, and my favorite sushi chef was back in town! He recognized us, said he got hired again by the new owners who begged him to come back, asked me how life was, and I was treated to delicious sushi. (YAY) All in all, I've had a complicated relationship with Osaka. I can't exactly leave it because it's so close to home and because of the awesome sushi chef, but I've definitely been pissed before due to the server quality. In all honestly, try the sushi, it's not Americanized, but I can definitely recommend the Bento Boxes to any of the little ones (fried vegetables, beef and rice, and some easy to eat sushi pieces!) I have had lunch, Dinner, Korean, Sushi here. I guess the owner is Korean, so the bibimbop was spot on, and all of the korean appetizers that come with it were awesome and really authentic. I've eaten in Koreatown in NYC with my Korean friends and it was pretty much identical minus the BBQ table. The sushi is super fresh, and they are closed sundays to prevent selling anything not so fresh which at first annoyed me but I appreciate now. The lunch special is a great deal and the service is fast and efficient. The place is always filled with Asians, which is also a good sign. read more

Hubby and I are rarely afraid to take a chance on 'off the beaten path' restaurants. We check Yelp first, and felt pretty confident of our choice on Osaka b/c of it. Whoopsie! Pros: 1) beer is cold and house sake is decent 2) rolls were very good (Spicy FuFu and another specialty roll they do) Cons: 1) SERVICE!!! we had no idea who our waiter was and found ourselves doing the raised eyebrow, 'don't make me give you the stink eye' bit. Which, we despise having to feel that way on our date night. 2) My husband had the Toro (which can be pretty pricey) and he had to spit it out in his napkin. 3) The Jalapeno Yellowtail dish had Italian dressing covering it...Italian dressing?? ...why ruin a good thing, man!! Small hidden places are either a)Super tasty and no one knows about it except the few that live around there and frequent the place religiously or b)Lots of people know about it and eat there but have low standards or no standards of what the food should be. This place is A. I'm a sushi purist. I live for fresh, buttery, raw, melt in your mouth salmon. I know fresh fish too. Osaka has a excellent collection of sashimi and rolls. There is no skimping on the rolls either. It's not all rice and fake "krab". The "choo choo" roll (i think that's what it was called) was fresh and savory with a surprising finish. I also really enjoyed their Scottish salmon. I'm giving this place 4 stars but even though they are a little pricey their happy hour prices are AMAZING. Ask for the chef special of the day. BLEH! This is an odd area, at least 3 sushi places around the same intersection of 183 and Anderson Mill, and none of them all that great. Of them, Osaka easily has the best food - both the Japanese and Korean dishes are generally quite good. But the service... ugh... The girls that work here could not possibly care less about their job, the customers, or anything at all. We've been completely forgotten about while being the only customers in the restaurant! Our dishes have taken an hour to arrive, again while being the only customers, and some sat on top of the sushi bar waiting to be taken to the table for more than 20 minutes. They'll just drop off the check without looking at you or saying anything. Don't even try to take advantage of happy hour specials, it'll take too long and you'll be ignored most of the time. I feel like it's some sort of a joke that the customer's aren't in on, as if once you try to leave they'll pull back the curtain and the cameras will appear, everyone will have a good laugh. read more

My husband is a huge Korean food fan. He loves that stuff. I have yet to find anything Korean that I like, sadly. I'm a huge maki sushi fan, but he doesn't like it. We saw this little place and though we'd finally found restaurant nirvana. The husband said the Korean food was really good and enjoyed it, but the sushi rolls were not good. The spicy was WAY too spicy, like burn the hair off of your tongue spicy. The fish didn't taste as fresh as it could have been and it was overall extremely underwhelming. I've completely marked this one off of my list. Sad, I was hoping it would be an answer, but it looks like we're back to dragging friends to our own favorite joints, which is okay too. read more

The boyfriend and I would each like a tuna tower. That's right, we would each like to have our own tuna tower. The first time we came here, we got the tuna tower and a caterpillar roll based on my friends recommendation. I had to build a fortress around my half of the tuna tower to keep him from inhaling mine along with his portion. It was really good. We tried a bunch of happy hour rolls. The caterpillar was the best. We did not like any of the other rolls. Stick with the caterpillar roll. It has unagi and apparently unagi helps men last longer in bed. read more

Osaka is my favourite place for Sushi in North Austin. The fish is fresh and the chef is great. Although they don't do anything fancy, but they do what they do well. I highly recommend the beef sashimi if you want a change from all the fish. They have all your typical rolls, sushi and sashimi. I've been eyeing this place for a while now and finally decided to give it a shot last night. Upon entering the building, I was greeted by the chef from behind the sushi counter. Very friendly, I thought. I ordered the "Hot Spicy Stew" which is actually called Yuk Gae Jang. I was a little hesistant because the menu said it was one of Korea's hottest dishes. Now, I like spicy food, but I was worried it would be too hot. Not at all. It was perfect in every way. It had a variety of vegetables including bean sprouts and green onions. The beef was so, so tender. It was absolutely delicious and worth every penny of the almost $12 that I spent on it. (9.95 plus tax and tip) I ordered to go, and after I had paid the waitress asked me if I wanted any sides with it. Now usually places ask you this before you pay because they want to charge you extra. I asked for rice with it, and it was given to me at no additional charge, I didn't ask what other sides it might come with. I thought that was very nice. She told me it would be 15-20 minutes, which was a little more than I had expected to wait, but I came back to check in about 12 minutes and it was all ready to go. Not bad. I don't mind waiting 12 minutes for the quality food that this was. The portion was also enough for me to make two meals out of. I got to enjoy the leftovers for lunch today! I will definately go here again and can't wait to try more of their dishes! read more

A Coworker and I visited this unassuming hideaway for lunch today. I had read reviews that this was a great dining and they were all correct. Both of us sat down at the bar and ordered the "Sushi C" Lunch special. That was 6 pieces of a sushi and choice between two rolls, and we both decided upon something called the Jalapeno Hamachi, which was a combo of yellow-tail, jalapenos and cream cheese with a crunchy outside. Absolutely fantastic. We both experienced our first attempt at Uni, and it was fantastic. I'm glad I asked after I ate it, since the thought of eating Eel was not on the top of my list. If you find yourself lost on Anderson Mill Road at 183, then stop in here and be pleasantly amazed. I will be going back here again and again. I use to eat here for lunch frequently, but have not been in about 6 months. The first thing I noticed is that they completely changed the interior for the better. Before it use to have a bright mini mall feel, the redesign made it much more of a dark and intimate space. They also appeared to redesign their menu and added 5-10 new specialty rolls. The food quality does not seem to have changed at all. I give them very high marks for taste and freshness, and now can add points for ambiance. I love the food here! I always leave with no complaints. However, please do something about the staff!! My entire table felt very uncomfortable with our waitress due to her sour look the entire time. Two strikes and you're out. This is the second time we have received sub-par sushi here. The first time my husband ordered the tako, and it was chewy and poorly cut into bizarre chunks. Today, we ordered O Toro, which is typically my favorite dish, although always pricey at "market price". I thought they had brought us the wrong dish.....the O Toro we received was cut in a flat square shape, it looked like pounded meat and was crunchy and stringy.....I'm still working on getting this stringy stuff out of my teeth! We asked for clarification from the waitress and the sushi chef and they said it was their O Toro. So we basically paid $40.00 for 4 pieces of sashimi that was inedible, we left the 2 we didn't try on the plate and was not offered any type of bill reduction. The rest of the sashimi ordered was pretty standard, but the O Toro was absolutely the worst. Sorry, but you have lost a customer for life. I'll take my business to Midori, who knows what O Toro is suppose to taste like. read more

I only came here once but the experience was good. My friend told me not to order the bento set because she didn't like it. She had the sushi lunch, which is a pretty good deal with the amount of food. I had a yakisoba and it was ok, didn't really taste like yakisoba though, more like regular stir fried noodles. They also have some Korean food on the menu. We saw the chef prepared a very enticing rolls called the "Danger Roll", it is sushi roll topped with lots of masago (the small orange colored roes) and the chef finished the touch with a little torching on top of the rolls. Looked real good! Will be back to try it, other than that, it's just a small Japanese restaurant with expected outcome. read more

I love Osaka... the setting, the waiters, the food, everything! It's probably my favorite sushi place in Austin but I say that a lot... the problem with sushi is that it's hard to compare when you don't have it all laid out in front of you... AND when your naive Japanese grandmother can make it at home for you. Not to brag, I'm just saying... you can tell the difference. Anyhoo, Osaka's got a decent location and manages to hold it's own despite Kobe being right around the corner. I don't eat at Kobe because call me bigoted, but I don't want waiters named Juan serving me sushi. Likewise, I wouldn't want a Yoko serving me enchiladas. We live in America and everything is smushed together and nothing is authentic, so the LEAST restaurants can do is match their staff to their food (and it doesn't even have to be true... fuck, if Juan just wrote "Kato" on his nametag, I'd be A-OK). Some of the best sushi in Austin...and the staff/chefs are great! The interior is somewhat small, but with lots of great, simple wood. The sushi bar is awesome. The best roll you can get is the Kiki.....a soy paper roll with lots of crab, avocado, and rice, then topped with minced spicy tuna. Sounds a little weird, but it is the best. Not often we run into a 5 star meal on a road trip, but Osaka was definitely a wow meal. Smallish restaurant, but we were seated just before 6 pm on a Tuesday and it filled within minutes. We ordered the Beef Bulgogi based on the reviews, neither of us being familiar with Korean dishes. The large dish of beef was great and the 8 or so little dishes of sides were all very tasty. We also had the Dragon roll which was great, though I prefer it prepared with more eel, and the yellow fin sashimi since it was one of the freshest fish they had. The sashimi was amazing. The banana chocolate eggroll sounded interesting for desert, but we didn't save room, it was so good. read more

Great Food, Huge Portions, Great Service. Lots of Korean dishes, like fresh mackerel, etc. We enjoyed the Jalapeno Rolls, Crunch Roll, and the Sensational Roll. Also had Combination Tempura and Soup. Everything was tasty! The size of the rolls and the dishes were unbelievable. We ordered way too much food, and the employees were more than accommodating in packing it up for us to take home. The employees are SO FRIENDLY! The only reason I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 is because it was very hot inside and that made it uncomfortable for us, and they don't have a full service bar, which was a big disappointment. (Gotta have a Martini with your Sushi!) We will still be going back to Osaka though! read more
