Behind Rubio's Mexican in that weird "Belcaro" strip mall is one of the best sushi places in Denver - Osaka Sushi. The quality of sushi is always very good and the service is quite friendly. The chef's specials are great if you feel like trying something different. Don't be afraid to ask what a "playboy roll" is.... Oysters and calamari are also delicious and fresh. Better, cheaper and less crowded than Sushi Den. Give it a shot! read more

The inside was clean, albeit a little dim for my liking. The lunch rush had probably come and gone by that point, so we took a seat at the bar. Our female server, Haejoo, asked for my ID because she thought I was younger than 21 (I'm 28). A lot of people agree. It's just good genes, I guess. Spicy pandas like heat, so my friend and I did the Nuclear Roll Challenge. Simply consume eight pieces of spicy tuna sushi, topped with the chef's special spicy sauce. All they would tell me was wasabi oil was in there. I wasn't scared at all. More like giddy and freakin' excited. There's no time limit, and if you finish the roll, you get a free small bottle of cold sake. The rolls (one for me and one for my friend) were placed in front of us. A very small challenge that I thought would somehow pack more punch than it did. I felt the wasabi go up my nose, and I very slightly teared up from all that, but I powered through without problems. Sushi gone in less than a minute, to Haejoo's shock. My friend wasn't too far behind, finishing about a minute after me. Two guys finished in two minutes. Yup, we're badasses. I took a nice celebratory shot of sake just for the heck of it. The rest would get consumed at a later time. Very good sushi here, with fresh ingredients. The guys working behind the counter weren't as talkative. I guess they were merely in the zone working and prepping for the dinner rush. This was probably my easiest food challenge to date. I'd definitely come back for more than one Nuclear Roll, just to see how much I can take down. If anything, I'd probably get full before any sort of heat took me down. Ok, I'm a sushi snob. I'm also a sake snob... so I figured that I would probably lean towards the 2-star folks who know their sushi and not the 4-star folks who seem Ok with everything being fried and covered with mayo. But that's not what this was. They had tons of unusual items, and even my beloved shiso and quail egg for the masago. And here's the best part: they have my favorite sake at about $5 less per bottle than the next guy. Good selection, some unusual roll combinations (that were really tasty!), and above average sushi. I've been everywhere. Everywhere. This is the only place I'll go anymore. I've been to Sushi Den. It was good. It wasn't Osaka. I've been to Japon. It was good. It wasn't Osaka. I've been to Hapa. It was okay. It also, was not Osaka. I figure since I compare every Japanese restaurant I go to with Osaka, I should probably just review Osaka. Since moving from California, I hadn't had yellowtail and salmon that melts in your mouth the way it does here. The fish is fresh, they have a great supplier, and the people are super helpful. I have had to make special orders or have requested items that were not on their menu before and the sushi chefs embrace the challenge and serve up a gorgeous platter. Their menu has expanded much over the past year, but I still state that anything with their salmon or yellowtail in it is the best I could find in the city. Here is my suggested menu for the meat eaters: -Start off with Magic Mushrooms. They are avocado wrapped in salmon and baked in an aoli cream sauce. Dear god, they are heaven. -If you're into it, hit up some miso soup. There's is good and comforting. - Sushi course: Spicy Tuna hand roll, salmon skin roll, Playgirl Roll. - Nigiri: Salmon, Yellowtail, Scallop, Fresh Oyster. - Dessert: Mochi Ice Cream, Mango and Red Bean are my favorites. For the vegetarians, there's more good news. They always have an array of options for you. We have ordered portobello nigiri, sweet potato tempura rolls, asparagus rolls, and all four of their dinners. They are all fabulous. They're never actually that busy except for the off night a big party shows up. The people are nice, and I've always gotten great service there. Sit at the sushi bar for a show, if you like. Once again, Yelp came through for me in a pinch. I had some girlfriends in town and we were dying for some sushi, but it was Friday night so places like Sushi Den and Sasa were out of the question. I go to the Bally's across the street so I've seen this spot hidden across the street many times and always wanted to try it. Well, it was amazing! Very good quality sushi at reasonable prices. My favorite was the firecracker roll and shrimp tempura roll (something I usually order whenever I go out for sushi, since I'm a total puss when it comes to sushi) My friends were also very pleased with what they ordered. If you are ever craving decent sushi, thats cheaper than the Den and not as crowded, go here! The owner was awesome. He went around doing sake shots with every table. read more

Just because you're in Glendale doesn't mean you have to dine on inhuman portions of corporate sludge! Be prepared to be greeted in boisterous Japanese from behind the sushi bar as you come in and thanked as you leave. The wait staff is kind and even sweet. Everything I've tried here, I've liked. It's tasty, fresh, rolled nicely and not too big. I brought my parents here for sushi. They are not sushi eaters. But they loved it. I think that speaks volumes. Osaka's is kid-friendly, too. I can't think of another sushi place where I've seen kids every time I've gone there! If only I didn't have to sit on those chairs... UPDATE 4/14/07: I have to give Osaka's another star. Last night I called ahead to let them know we were coming with 6 adults and 2 kids, they said no problem. When we got there, there were two place settings that had rubber bands around the tops of the chopsticks for the kids! Such a nice touch!!! The man who took our reservation, who I suspect is the owner, also brought lollipops to the kids. There was a couple with a baby sitting at the sushi bar. When the baby started crying, he picked her up and she stopped!! He carried her around for almost 20 minutes while mom and dad ate, even bringing her around to meet all the other little kids in the place. It's nice to feel welcome and the proprietors at Osaka always make you feel that way the moment you walk in the door. And they never neglect to thank you for your patronage when you leave. Some may find that hokey, but I kinda like it. Hidden off of Colorado Blvd, Osaka is still kind of a "local knowledge" type of place. Sushi Den, Hapa, and Japon may get more word of mouth buzz, but for the money and sense of belonging, I'll take Osaka. There's always a glut of off-menu nigiri/sashimi specials, which is a good indicator of freshness at a sushi joint. The decor is a little wacky...kinda like when ever the mood struck them to add something, they just went with the feeling. No sense of Feng Shui, but that just adds to the charm. read more

Osaka is a phenomenal sushi restaurant. Very neighborhoody and friendly beyond belief. Every roll I've had there has been interesting and delicious. My recommendation is the Mega Lotto and Fire Caterpillar rolls. Also, Wakatake sake ($50 a bottle, the green one, totally worth it) tastes and goes down like water so be careful. The owner will do a special trick with sake bombs if it's your birthday or if he feels like it, and trust me you've never seen it and it's awesome! You don't go to Osaka for the pomp, you go there for incredible food and a neighborly environment; and you don't valet your whip, but you leave with a nice wobble in your walk. read more

The all you can eat weekend buffet is a complete scam. Not only that. When we first started they said that they won't charge my 2 year for the buffet. So we started to have lunch there. After we finish eating they decided to charge my daughter. All she ate was 1 bean! The waitress kept on apologizing. So now the food. The fish barely covers the rice! If you don't eat the rice than they will charge you for individual pieces. The edamame bean was under cook. That is why my daughter only ate one bean. The regular sushi on the other table looks good, but I didn't order any. After they rip me off by charging my daughter. Never ever going back. Enjoy the 3 dollars you got from charging my 2 year old daughter and lost of all future business from me. read more

Just like the descriptor next to those 3 stars, Osaka is A-OK. I mean, it's SUSHI, which I love, so it's already got that going for it. But it's a study in checks and balances here: for every positive, there's a negative. Since I'm already having a cruddy day today, I'll start with the negatives. The service, for example, is beyond ridiculous. There were times when we wouldn't see our server for a week or more! Okay, maybe not a whole week... but REALLY long stretches of time. There were several times when one of our group actually had to get up from the table to order more sushi/order a beer/get our check/etc. Not okay. The other glaring negative is the prices. Osaka is REALLY expensive for what it is. I mean yes... it's good... but it's no better (or worse) than any of Denver's other top-tier sushi joints, just more expensive. You're certainly not paying for ambiance, so where's this extra tax going? The decor is NOT Zen (not even as nice as Wasabi's bathrooms), NOT hip (no corrugated metal and edgy art a la Hapa), NOT quasi-authentic Japanese-ish (Japon, Tazu), and NOT dark-romantic chic (hello Sushi Den). It's strip-mall stylie to the max... and were they playing Kenny G at top volume in the bathrooms? I think they were. So where do they get off charging what they do (in the neighborhood of $12.95 for most of their signature rolls)? I don't know. Maybe Kenny G gets a high royalty cut. But like I said, for every negative there's a positive. It IS tasty sushi! Although I do consider myself a fan, I'm certainly no sushi purist or sushi snob, and it's definitely not beneath me to order rolls. I love rolls, and Osaka certainly has a huge variety of very creative ones. From the high-rent list, we sampled Zombie Brains and The Sensual Roll. Good, but you'd be just as well off sticking with the more basic ones. The Spider Roll (deep fried soft shell crab, a standard) is well done here, and the tasty, crispy goodness of the crab is most certainly not skimped on. Another hit: the Yellowtail and Scallion Roll. We all know the best fish is saved for nigiri, so to indulge in rolls all night is the equivalent of going to a Champagne Bar and ordering PBR... but if you happen to like PBR, what's the problem? There are so many sushi options in Denver, and I love when my homestate Cali friends mock us like we're landlocked hicks with no concept or clue. They only have to come here and taste! Denver knows sushi, landlocked though we may be. For your money, there are better options than Osaka... but then again, there are far, far worse. read more

This review was based on the "all you can eat" lunch special, which apparently was a mistake to order. First of all, I don't get all the reviews that rave about this place. I mean it's entirely possible that the "all you can eat" menu has completely different food than the regular menu, but if the former is that much worse then they shouldn't even offer it. So, about the food... We had some nigiri sushi, I ordered tuna and yellowtail, and my friend ordered crab. Crab was imitation crab, and the tuna was a tiny sliver on a big piece of rice. You couldn't taste the fish if you ate the whole thing in one bite. Same with the yellowtail. We ordered "dynamite" which basically ended up being a bowl of mayonnaise with I don't know what else in there. Green mussels, which I don't like to begin with, came with more of that "dynamite" mayo. The roll, tuna crunch roll, also had way too much rice, you couldn't taste any of the filling. The tempura was on the greasy side, and the udon was bland. We ordered quite a bit of variety, yet there was nothing that I would characterize as "good." I went here with a friend for the first time. We hung out, drank lots of saki and slowly ate alot of sushi. The quality of the sushi was not poor- but less than average. They have alot of rolls with all sorts of ingredients most of which I could not try because they included tempura and I am a celiac. As a celiac, I focus on fish in sushi restaurants maybe more than your average otter. While I had a good time with my friend and we had good service- I would not recommend this place to someone who is a discerning sushi lover. In fact I won't be going back myself. When I got home that night, my squeeze asked where I'd been and why I smelled like a fried noodle. I explained and was asked to change my clothes to get the smell out. I was then forced to remove my clothes from the bedroom. At the time I did not understand why "this smell" was such a big deal. But the next morning, I got ready for work and grabbed my messenger bag and gaged. It smelled horrible- like a stale deep fat fryer. Then I remembered that I had the bag with me in the restaurant the night before. So then I finally understood what that smell was all about. And yes, though I only had fish, I did have some serious wheat contamination somehow because I spent the morning in the bathroom. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to find such good sushi in Denver! I sat at the sushi bar and ordered some hamachi sashimi, unagi nigiri and one of their specialty rolls - I forgot the name, but it was the super spicy one with maguro, hamachi, wasabi tobiko, diced jalepeno peppers and a piece of shrimp tempura inside. DELICIOUS. The hamachi was super fresh and just melted in my mouth. Unagi was just as perfect. This San Francisco girl was happy to indulge in some sushi so far from home. YUMMY! read more

The overall experience at Osaka was average. The food gets three stars for taste, but is overpriced. I don't think of myself as frugal but, $3.50 for a very small serving of edamame? Really? Hmmm. Fantastic sushi! Definitely one of the top spots in Denver! What makes Osaka extra special is the friendliness and attentiveness of the owner and staff. We were greeted warmly upon arrival and checked on throughout the dining experience. The staff also handled our special requests without batting an eye. As others have mentioned, the owner frequently treats guests to a free round of sake bombs. Nothing tops off a great sushi meal like a free sake bomb! I did not order any items off the sushi menu but I sure stared longingly as I saw some delivered to surrounding tables. I can't wait to get back and try the tempura. So I think the food is good. Not super amazing great, but reasonably priced and good. I wish they had more non-mayo, non-tempura, non-crab special roll options. The reason it gets 5 stars is for customer service. We were there last night, and asked if they did anything special for our friend's birthday. We got to the restaurant and although it wasn't overly busy, it took us over 5 min to be seated. Our dinner was 7:45 on a Tuesday night. After being seated at the Sushi Bar, we sat for another 15 minutes before we decided to leave. Other than being handed a menu, we weren't offered a drink or even given any water. Both the parties seated on either side of us were given drinks and appetizers during that time. After spending over 20 min inside the restaurant and no service it was time to move on. Other than the poor service...and having plenty of time to look at the menu, their prices seemed to be high especially for the local market! I was going to order their medium sashimi plate and at the $30+ price tag, I definitely know you can find better options in the area. Probably with better service too... This was a first and last kind of visit. I would not recommend an attempt by anyone else especially when there are so many other options within a mile or two. read more

Most of all, Lori's review best describes my sense of Osaka, too. It was my birthday today, and the kids recommended Osaka. It is my son & his partner's favorite sushi destination since they moved to Denver last fall. And I can see why. I do agree with what several of the other reviewers have pointed out -- it is a bit pricey here. I did notice that. The quality of the food and the portions are all very good. I don't do sushi, and thus I ordered the teriyaki salmon with the tempura. Best tempura ever and excellent salmon. It came with salad and miso soup, for $17. Gigantic portions. Would have been enough food for 2. I shared majorly with my son and daughter. My daughter ordered some interesting sushi. She did not like the taste of the yellowtail, and returned it. The waitperson graciously brought her some tuna instead. She loved that. Later, she brought a generous cash tip over to the sushi bar. Good style, daughter, good style! My son & his girlfriend both ordered the yakisoba noodles. He got them with chicken, she got hers vegetarian. They seemed to enjoy it. I really like the blossoming flower tea. I had difficulty finding rolls I wanted to eat because almost every roll includes imitation crab. For some strange reason, I am allergic to imitation crab (but not real crab). Maybe I should add one star back because they happily substituted spicy tuna for the crab on the rolls I wanted to try, but I wish they had created rolls that didn't include fake crab and/or cream cheese. For two ppl, we ordered 4 rolls and a few pieces of nigiri. Then we ordered dessert to celebrate our birthdays (but we were pushing it). The fried cheesecake dessert is yummy! In sum... I think Osaka is worth of a 4.5. Fresh fish specials daily, owner is always there and checking on customers and very good sushi overall. We were there on Saturday and after finishing the Nuclear Roll (very, very, very, very, very spicy they say and it is true) and the saki I got for finishing it, the whole place was then treated to a saki bomb on the house. Very good sushi! When I first walked in, I was concerned with a slight smell, but I know I'm sensitive so I sat at the bar. The Chefs were friendly, and a mix of Korean and Japanese. They started with a bit of kimchi and some miso (I like both, and both were good here). Anywhere I go, I always get one specialty roll and some mixed nigiri and sashimi, and was not disappointed in either at Osaka. The yellowtail was awesome! Finally, if you have never had FRESH wasabi, you don't know what you're missing. And theirs was a very good accompaniment to the meal. read more

Osaka is one of the best sushi places I've been to in Denver. We ordered a combination of sushi, rolls and chef specials. I really enjoyed the tacos and the Hawaiian White Tuna (Waloo) sushi was spectacular. The Rainbow Roll and Osaka Roll were the perfect compliments to each other. The fish was all very fresh and the flavors and presentation were very well done. While this is better sushi than many places, it is also more expensive ($96 for 2 with no drinks or dessert). I had two problems with this place. When we walked in the door we were hit with the smell of gas. I think the kitchen vents into the dining room??? The smell was very noticeable the whole time we were there, almost overwhelmingly, which did not make for the most pleasant dining experience. My other issue was the service. Our water glasses were not refilled the entire time we were there and the food was slow coming out of the kitchen. We ordered several items and were starving. It would have been great for them to bring out the dishes as they were ready instead of waiting to bring everything at once 30 min after placing our order. We showed up at 6-ish on a Saturday night and most of the tables were empty (no wait). It did start to fill up around 7. read more

Holy CRAP I think I've found my new favorite sushi joint. I came to Osaka Sushi per the recommendation of another sushi fanatic friend of mine. I wasn't expecting too terribly much, and was extremely pleasantly surprised. We walked in a little after 8 on a Friday evening, and the place was super lively. I think the owner had just bought the entire restaurant a round of sake bombs, as everyone was standing up with a sake bomb in hand and there was beer covering the bar. The staff got everything cleaned up super quickly, though, and we were able to nab a spot at the bar. My friend and I usually order flavored sake when we can at sushi restaurants, but a new alcoholic item we'd never seen before caught our eye first this time. They offered Soju (essentially Korean vodka) in a couple of different flavors. Not knowing any better, we ordered the strawberry Soju. They sliced up a few fresh strawberries into a glass teapot and poured the Soju over those to allow the liquid to take on the flavor of the strawberries. You might want to wait like 15 minutes for this to happen, as we only waited about 5 minutes and our first shot did not taste like strawberry at all. We now refer to Soju as a teapot of shots.... it sure made for a fun night! Now for the rolls... They had all kinds of delicious creations. Being a fruity sushi lover, I had to try the Tropicana roll - tempura shrimp and crab topped with kiwi and strawberry sauce. This did not disappoint. They also had our standard favorite sweet potato roll along with some other various great rolls. My only complaint with the rolls is that they are on the small side. Typically at a sushi restaurant my friend and I can order three rolls and be stuffed. We had to order about six here to feel satisfied. Their hamachi shashimi was TO. DIE. FOR, however and more than made up for the small rolls. This really was the best hamachi I've ever had.... even better *gasp* than Sushi Sasa's, which has been my shining standard for several years now. I can't wait to go back here. In addition to the happy hour BOGO domestic beer and hot sake, this is a really great sushi place, especially if you're near Glendale and don't want to stray too far. The prices for their regular sushi rolls are pretty nice, in the $4-6 range. Their prices for their specialty rolls are a bit more expensive than average, $10-14. That being said, their specialty rolls are great. Prices on nagiri are pretty standard. If you eat a combo of basic and specialty rolls, you'll probably spend about the same amount as you would anywhere else. And their house salads are HUGE - it's a 9" or 10" plate - so plan for that if you're getting soup, salad, and sushi. I unfortunately haven't had any of their other menu items, but I'm sure they're great. A word of warning, if they have their sushi challenge while you're there, DON'T DO IT! I eat a ton of hot things. Most things that people think are inedible, I think taste a little spicy. Their challenge is to eat a (forget what the name is) roll. It's spicy fish of some sort - it really doesn't matter, because you will taste no fish - with a couple types of hot chili sauces. And it's not a dab, it is several tablespoons-full. What do you get? A small, cheap bottle of sake if you finish it. What did I leave with? A shirt with pit stains, chest-sweat stains, and we'll just say "a lower GI tract" that wasn't happy with me and burned for 12 hours. PS - the service is great always. They even cheered me on a bit when I was all sweaty and gross from the aforementioned roll. read more

The sushi rolls here are smaller than all the sushi rolls I have ever had. The sushi itself was not bad, but I wouldn't say it's exceptional in anyway either. What annoys me the most is that the waitress didn't let us know that hot tea was an extra charge and not complimentary like the sushi places I've been too. With my parents, three cups of tea was equivalent to almost a roll of sushi... So not worth it. I was considering giving this place a one star but the waitress was relatively nice I guess and the restaurant had a good atmosphere. Love, love, love... After multiple suggestions by my boss, I finally decided to check this place out. I have to say that this place is awesome. I am not usually a fan of yellow tail because of its texture, but the yellow tail at Osaka was awesome. After Jared and I finished our meal, the entire restaurant was given a complimentary sake bomb. What more can you ask for? Great fish, great prices, friendly and attentive service, and a free shot! Besides, you can't beat the people watching here. My absolute favorite establishment, sushi or otherwise in Denver. When you look up "local gem" in the dictionary it should mention Osaka. Really good sushi but what makes the place is how friendly they are--The owner always walks the floor and even drinks saki bombs with the patrons. After working nearby for a few days, my colleague and I were ready for some sushi. We found this place on Yelp, and decided to try it since it was a mile from our hotel and the reviews looked good. It is behind Rubio's (same building), but we saw it right away. There is ample parking in the strip mall. We were greeted and seated immediately at a table in a cool little glassed-in area. It overlooks the parking lot (oh well), but was cozy. Ambience is pretty basic. Linen tablecloths and napkins, but not super-fancy. I had a cup of green tea and the Super Bowl (spicy) - basically hwe dup bap (or Korean chirashi, I like to say to make my Kor-Am friends angry). It was a large bowl, and really delicious. Rice, greens, a generous amount of sashimi, lots of colorful tobiko, and the sauce on the side. I would go back for this. My colleague ordered three rolls and said they were amazing. He couldn't finish three pieces of the spicy tuna roll, and the server asked him, "Was something wrong?" He said, "No! There are only three pieces left, so obviously not." Nice service, great food. Was in Denver for a week and this wonderful place was across the hotel. Coming from New York, my sushi standard is pretty high and boy was i impressed. The sushi was fresh and tasty, the service was warm, friendly and attentive. They also had a good selection of Korean dishes, but i was stuffed from the amazing rolls i had just downed !! It was raining very heavily and the owner actually offered to drop me at my hotel. Now that says something !!! read more

I wish I could give this place 5 stars, because as far as my enjoyment of it goes, it deserves it. But I'm a realist and 5 star reviews are only saved for the best of the best. So this place gets a 4, a high-five, a you-should-go-there and a this-place-is-awesome. I love Osaka. First time there the owner was celebrating something and called us into a sake-bomb train. Needless to say, we didn't need to be asked twice. How fun is that? Service can be hit or miss, though I go here so often I notice that the poor servers tend to not last long. So overall it's generally pretty good. The sushi is good. It's not the BEST in the world but it's definitely one of the best sushi spots in Denver. I've reached out to other yelpers who've left negative reviews about Osaka to ask where they prefer to eat, because honestly I've had a hard time finding better sushi than Osaka for the price, and no one's been able to provide anything worthwhile. I honestly think they might've just had a bad single experience and wrote this place off. Big mistake. Osaka isn't the cheapest option in Denver. As a matter of fact, it might be a bit over-priced. But all sushi is in Colorado, and for the quality they provide and the atmosphere it's in (super laid back, wear whatever you want, ultra friendly owner) I always enjoy myself eating at Osaka. Hint - sit at the bar. You'll get faster service and a free small pickled snack :) Osaka is my go-to sushi joint and I recommend to everyone it become theirs. read more

This place is a hoot! We go Friday nights - the environment is always so fun and upbeat. We were even given free sake bombs that Friday! You can tell the owner really takes pride in his restaurant. He's often there smiling and laughing it up, from table to table. A really great, personable guy. The sushi is better than average, but not exactly sushi den! & Besides the chef's picks, I've never batted an eye at the prices! I would definitely recommend, especially on a Friday! read more
