I always get a little queasy when I hear of an All You Can Eat sushi place... but this place is not like the norm. It far exceeds it in terms of their quality of sushi. If you are a sushi lover, come here on an empty stomach! There are two reasons I gave them a 4 star review instead of a 5 star review: The first being is that the service is average. Not overly friendly. They really run a tight ship and you can feel it in the seriousness of their servers. They aren't there to wine and dine. They Come across as trying to get through as many customers as possible... as quickly as possible. Honestly makes sense when running an all you can eat lunch special. But they could sprinkle in some minor small talk so you feel more like a customer than a number. The second reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars is because of their Takoyaki. Tried Osaka for the first time - ordered takeout, and that may have been a mistake. The spicy tuna was OK, though it didn't come with any sriracha mayo or a sauce, which was a bit sad. Also ordered the fried udon (shrimp) and there was really no flavor at all and the noodles were way overcooked. John ordered the beef ramen, and again the noodles were very overcooked and the broth was tasteless, so he ended up putting in soy sauce (they packed the noodles and broth separately, but still it was just not good). We also sampled chicken wings, fried rice (a little sweet), fried dumplings, meat skewers, and tempura shrimp. I have been coming here for years and love the sushi even though some of the rolls are a bit heavy on the rice. However I do appreciate the fact that the entire menu (appetizers and desserts included) is all u can eat. And for 36 dollars at a sushi place that is pretty unbeatable. Osaka Sushi is a good choice for AYCE sushi in Rochester. Been here at least 3-4 times already. I would drive all the way from Buffalo if I want to do a day trip to Rochester. Food is the excellent and fresh, the place was filled, with about 50% of the customers Asian. I have been enjoying a number of sushi restaurants in Toronto, and this is the only place I have been to in Rochester that emulates those places. It is not truly a buffet in the normal sense. For about $23 for dinner, you get an all you can eat dining experience. Basically, the give you a menu and you pick what you want. I usually start with fried items because those take longer to come out, when those start to come out, I then order sushi. I also like the dinner menu since it has sashimi (just the fish without the rice) and the rice fills me up. I like the red tuna and some salmon, but most of the time I will order sashimi, rolls and those special fancy rolls as long as they have red tune. They have a ton of other items also but this gives a basic idea. Once you finish your first round, you can order more until you reach your stuffed. This is great because you can tailor your experience how you want and don't have to worry about freshness of something sitting on a buffet. While I would recommend some of the Toronto places over here, this is a lot closer and a great deal for sushi close to home. One of my favorite dining experiences in Rochester area. You won't find bold new directions in sushi here, though most places don't have the hand rolls offered here. Their waitstaff are really worked; they deserve a good tip. We went during a busy time so we had to wait awhile to be seated, however once seated, service was very quick and friendly. Don't, just don't! Having eaten at some of the best sushi restaurants in the country (Uchi and Uchico in Austin, TX) I wasn't expecting the greatest sushi at $32.99 for all-you-can-eat. But I did not expect imitation crab in rolls advertised as having crab meat and I did not expect to have to order each individual razor thin slice of Sashimi. All of the fish (white tuna, snapper, salmon and mackerel) was so small and thin as to be transparent - I could have read a one syllable word from newspaper clipping through each slice. The crab meat was literally bontrae (spun soy protein) infused with cooked white fish and sugar and dyed red on the exterior - something that I can purchase at my local grocery store for a few dollars for a pound package. The service was horrendous. We put in our order for rolls and sashimi at the same time. When we saw that each "piece" of sashimi was the size of a postage stamp we tried to place an order for more, and more rolls, and were told NO by our server. We were told we had to wait until our roll order was served before ordering more. This on an 1 1/2 hour time limit for all you can eat. From placing the first order, it took more than 25 minutes to get our first plate of teeny tiny thin raw fish slices and another 10 minutes for the first roll order - thus lowering the remaining time to 55 minutes. A well organized effort to burn our time with substandard servings on a running monetary clock. This was clearly calculated to shorten the time available to order more. Then, there is the fish itself. The snapper was good, what there was of it. The salmon tasted like raw farm raised salmon and the white tuna texture was mushy, not firm, and unpleasant to taste. The mackerel tasted like pickled herring from a jar, which I enjoyed as I love herring in all its forms, pickled, smoked, raw in Amsterdam with onions, and in sour cream sauce from the grocery; but it was not sashimi grade mackerel, what there was of it. On to the rolls. All I can say is great rice in great quantities surrounding teeny tiny pieces of vegetables and fish, rolled so poorly and inattentively that each piece fell apart in the move from the serving plate to our dishes. I never saw nori and none of the rolls were wrapped. For Sushi in Rochester pass on Osaka Sushi. It is valueless, tasteless and improperly prepared. And, the service was even worse. read more

They both ate the same food, and got sick within the same hour that night. I called the food poisoning hotline, and I was told to follow up with the restaurant. When calling the restaurant, I was told no manager was on duty. Then they hung up on me. I called back, again the person on the phone was no help, said "I'll have him call you back" yet did not take a name or number. There was no concern for someone calling regarding food poisoning. Secondly, I observed a gentleman there with his baby. He was told by staff there was no changing table in the men's room, and they told him to change the baby on a table. I've been curious about this place since it's not something I'm used to seeing in Rochester. All you can eat sushi (including sashimi, nigiri, special rolls and so much more) for just $23 per person?? I thought it was too good to be true. Unfortunately it was too good to be true. I did not come with high expectations because I understand the concept of you get what you pay for, but Osaka Sushi fell below my already low expectations. The plus side is the service is pretty good. The waiter came to check on us often and asked if we wanted to order more. They clear your table very quickly and the overall restaurant is fairly clean and modern in design. The presentation of all the dishes were awful. I expected better since other yelpers' pictures didn't look too bad. All of the rolls were delivered on tiny unattractive dishes. The rolls were not rolled tightly enough so everything fell apart when you tried to pick it up. The pieces of sashimi we ordered were not slices of beautiful fish. We got a our salmon sashimi in roughly chopped cubes, and the mackerel sashimi were thin and barely a centimeter in height. As for the taste, most of the sushi tasted the same and generally very flavorless. We got the rainbow roll and the spider roll for the special rolls. The rainbow roll was sad looking. The fish on top were not sticking to the roll, and so very thin. It did not have the fatty taste you look for in each individual piece of fish. The roll was too loosely rolled. The spider roll had a weird deep fried filling. The roll just tasted like oil....and the crunchy texture in the middle is just strange. I guess if you're looking for crunchy things with rice you may like it. The nigiri were ok. The rice was too warm, which made the fish warm. The fish themselves do not really melt in your mouth. They had a strange chewiness and like I mentioned above, tasted the same even though they are not the same type of fish. The rice however, was nicely seasoned with vinegar. I liked that. The non-sushi items we ordered were a little more than ok. The seaweed salad was good. It tasted fresh and bright. The donburi was surprisingly good. Though really it is mostly rice. Our udon bowls were small and lacked any savoriness, though my seafood one had a nice seaweed flavor. The noodles however were overcooked so a bit mushy. The gyoza's were a waste of tummy space as they kinda tasted like fried dough. The filling tasted like nothing. To try and get my money's worth here, I got the green tea ice-cream for dessert. It had a nice mild green tea flavor and was actually pretty rich. Overall I tried not to expect too much but after being handed a $50 bill for 2, my bf and I left thinking we could have spent that on much better food. read more

Osaka has a huge menu, there's literally so much to choose from from appetizers to desserts and I think I tried a different item in every category. The sushi rolls were way bigger than expected and as always my eyes were bigger than my belly. Really think about your plan before ordering -- do you want to fill up on appetizers? Do you want to focus only on speciality rolls? Do you want dessert after? These are all great questions I wish I asked myself when indulging. Our total was right around $30/person. $24 for All-You-Can-Eat-Sushi is such a steal. Coming from Hawaii, my only concern was the quality of the fish (where do they get it?). Some of the things we had were the miso soup, gyoza, shrimp skewers, sashimi (salmon, tuna, & mackerel), sushi (salmon, octopus, tuna, spicy salmon), grilled mackerel, beef short ribs, chicken teriyaki, shrimp & mushroom tempura, vegetable udon, & seafood udon. The only complaint with the food would be that the shrimp was not cleaned on the skewers or in the tempura (gross). The fish, however, was surprisingly fresh, served at the proper chilled temperature, & tasted great! As for the service, a server greeted us when we arrived. He walked us to a table & tossed the menus on the table as he walked away. Not the greatest, but hey, for $24 all-you-can-eat, I wasn't exactly expecting 5-star treatment. "Our" server returned at least every 10 minutes to check on us & was very polite. The establishment itself is okay - nothing fancy but there are booths & overall a cozy ambiance. This location just opened and things are already running smoothly! The POS system seems accurate and speedy. Basically their entire menu is included in the all you can eat price of $22.95 (less for children). They have sashimi, nagiri, maki, sushi, hand rolls, and speciality rolls, ALL INCLUDED! For people that don't care for sushi, they also have appetizers, noodle soups, teriyaki stir-fry, and more, even ice cream! It is not a buffet. You sit at your table and a waitress comes to you where you can order anything off the menu you like. The interior is very clean with a modern feel. The black and grey motif with pops of color from artwork and lighting give it a fun, artsy quality. The sushi bar is visible to the dining area (always a plus!) I took my mom, sister, and best friend here for the All You Can Eat because me and my best friend had been before and it was fantastic. We always came before during the week in the early evening because it fit our schedule, but due to time constraints this time we came on a Friday evening at 6pm. We were quick to be seated, got our drinks order in and that took just a few short minutes. We put in our first food order and it took nearly 20 minutes before we received our green salad, seaweed salad, and two pieces of nigiri (cold sushi). The female server set the food down quickly and left just as swiftly before we could ask about the other food items we had ordered. Another 15 minutes and we received another part of the food we'd ordered (calamari, shrimp skewers, and only 1 of 3 takoyaki we'd originally ordered). We managed to snag our server as she sat 2 more tables in her section to order some more food, hoping that ordering it early would help, but to no avail, the wait was just as gruelling. Out of all the food we'd ordered across being there for 2 and a half hours, we had barely received half, while the tables who were sat and ordered after us continuously received their food. Our server repeated the items we ordered back to us every time, but when asked about it after waiting 20-25 minutes she couldn't seem to find our order (this happened twice). After my mom and sister got fed up with waiting and wanted to leave, I asked to talk to a manager who, granted, was helpful and took 20% off our order and let us take the last small order of food we had put in (that we had been waiting 30 minutes for) to go with us. I'm genuinely disappointed because the food is AMAZING and me and my best friend love coming here. *I feel the small female server doesn't really care too much about the patrons, and if we come back and are given her as a server again, I will politely ask for another. Based on other reviews I can concur that the wait times are egregious on the weekend evenings, at least on Fridays. **EDIT: We got home and sat down to eat the take-home sushi and specifically my 2 pieces of Nigiri had big smears of wasabi on the bottom of each piece, which I didn't notice until I had split a piece in half and shared it with my 11-year old brother.
