Went there at 4... they (rightfully) sold out of most things, their fresh mochi is da best but I love their dorayaki (pancake thing) too!

Love this humble local mochi shop. Fresh and chewy mochi -- ate some there + brought some home for the fam. GET THE MOCHI this is why you come here. It's a 5/5 if you stick to this. Tried their other offerings, the shaved ice is pretty good, and the snacks are serviceable. Place is efficient, like all old-school Asian establishments -- get your yummies and GTFO from here. :) This place is clearly a beloved community fixture, and I love that this place exists in Sac.

Guess I'm currently revisiting places that I wrote "bad" reviews about many years ago, Osaka-Ya being one or those places. I've gotten manju from here throughout the years after my old review, but never returned for a snow cone until recently. I'm really not a fan of their shave ice - it's hard, not finely ground, and overly sweetened. Like everything, the manju prices have continued to increase over the years. I used to get manju fairly frequently, but now it just tends to be a more of a once a year treat. They are really the only actual manju place I know of in the area, and it's what I've grown up eating since I was a kid. They have a decent variety, and have ones they just make during Boy's Day and Girl's Day. The manju/mochi tastes as it should (soft/sweet).

I always am looking for fresh mochi and saw this place. It's a small shop that also serves shave ice. Came for the mochi and they only accept cash and do not have ac inside. Have some snacks too. Wish they had more variety of mochi as most had the red/white/mung bean filling and nothing else. Mochi is soft and bean filling is smooth!

Osaka-Ya is such a classic spot for mochi! The mochi here is delicious, fresh, and perfectly sweet--not overly sugary, just balanced and satisfying. You can really taste the freshness in every bite. They also have frozen mochi options, which are great if you want to take some home for later. Street parking can take a little patience, but it's worth the stop if you're craving quality mochi!

Got some mochi to go. They have the softest mochi I've tried so far! Their flavors are also good and not too sweet. I tried some red and white bean filled mochis. I prefer the white bean ones but red bean was also good. We also got to try their manju, fruit infused, and matcha mochis. I've never had manju before, but I did enjoy the coffee flavor one. It's like a thin cake layer with bean paste inside. Definitely want to go back to try more flavors!

cash only! it's a walk up window and there's a low bench thing for very casual seating, but otherwise be prepared to stand around, or walk around the neighborhood while trying to whittle down your ice mound. :) i got the xs tiger's blood with condensed milk, it was very tasty and more than enough! they give you a spoon and straw which helps eating it. service was fast and friendly, and there was no line on a weekday afternoon. perfect sweet treat, they have lots of flavors and ice cream too!

This place is our official indicator for the start of summer....always good and refreshing.....way better during the weekdays without any lines....my kid wasn't feeling well this morning, so had to utilize a sick day for some snow cone remedies....LOL

I love coming to Osaka-Ya during the summer time for their bento boxes, shave ice, and mochi. Today, I came specifically for their shave ice. The sizes are big and super affordable. I got an xsmall with mango syrup, green tea ice cream, mochi, and snow cap. The line was long was it moves quickly and you get your order quick too. For the snow cones, they accept cash only, no cards. There is a small little bench close to the ground next the bushes outside where you can sit and wait, and enjoy your snow cone. My boyfriend got mochis and he enjoyed them. I like their butter mochi here a lot but it is only available on Saturdays. They also have a sandwich shop attached which I've yet to try.

A hole in the wall, tiny spot that has so many Asian snacks, food, and other items. The woman working was super friendly and sweet, and we loved talking to her. I love me a salmon onigiri and will probably almost always get one when I see it. The ones from here are pretty solid, but not the best I've had (granted, I ate one everyday when I was in Japan). I came here after having lunch, so I was already pretty full. I would love to come back and try some of their other snacks!

Parking is tricky here. I'm not aware of a private lot so it's all street parking and during high times it's hard to find a space. My husband was determined to go in so he doubled parked leaving me in the car. That made me so nervous. I wish he just went around the block and found a space. And he wasn't in and out in a flash like he had hoped. There was a line inside the tiny shop. We aren't one of those people that plan ahead for New Years Day. So we didn't do a pre order of their soup mochi. We are the ones that shop on New Years Eve hoping that they made a little extra for us not planners. We lucked out. They had a whole box of Mochi that wasn't spoken for. They also had a ton of Mochi that people had planned ahead and preordered. We made out with some soup savory mochi and some rice crackers. I love the savory mochi toasted on the stove and dipped in soy sauce. I recommend. You plan ahead and order your New Years Mochi in advance so you aren't rushing to the store it see if there is any left.

Spring is almost here and this is my favorite place for shave ice! I like to ask for the simple syrup (no color), green tea powder, and for them to keep it "fluffy" and NOT pack down the ice. They also have incredible mochi. The traditional is with bean paste inside, but my favorite is with the peanut butter filling. (They also have fruit flavor mochi without filling.) They also have a small selection of popular Japanese snacks and food items.

What a great place to stop by for a quick dessert or even a quick lunch bite. Today I went to grab some mochi and some other Japanese goodies. The mochi reminds me of Turkish delights or dduk, but less chewy. Not better but different. I also liked that the mochi was very colorful and had different flavors like blue raspberry which tasted very blue and slightly raspberry. Lolz. The red bean cakes were not as dense as I expected which is what I like. Overall it was very light and even flakey. And it wasn't overly sugary. There's lots store is very small and packed with different decorations. Vibe feels very family own/moms and pops. And my friends noticed their awards/accomplishments. There's lots of other confectionery so I'll definitely come back. When we first arrived there was no line but after me and my friends were done there was quite a queue that built up out of nowhere! Smokin!! Solid A

The blue raspberry is the best... They were out.

You thought we wouldn't notice that you changed the flavor based to a cheapo knockoff flavor from Smart and Final?! It's nasty. And now the price is $3 higher. I'm over this place... been coming here since I was a kid. I assume the business has been purchased and this is a new owner decision... lame! Do better. Yes you replaced the one I didn't like, because you laid it on me thinking I wouldn't notice. And the new flavor was different too! If hard work is replacing quality product with cheaper, lower quality product and then jacking up the price (my same order for 30 years has never been $8) -- when you come in and change / take away things people like to make more money that is lame. You take that away from people who care. As for not coming back? I will not.

The first few bites were actually really good, but toward the end I started noticing these little gummy bits throughout it. There were so many that it kind of caught me off guard and took away from the overall experience. As other reviews have mentioned, the cashier at the front didn't come across as very friendly and had a RBF. She had a pretty serious demeanor and gave the impression that she didn't really want to be there. It's not a huge deal and I understand I'm not at like some Michelin star place, but I do think the customer service could be improved. One thing I also noticed was that the customer who ordered behind us received their items before we did, which was a little annoying. I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to come back, but if I'm in the area again, I'd be willing to give some of the other menu items a try.

TL;DR: - Perfected taiyaki batter (light crispy exterior w/ satisfyingly chewy, almost mochi-like, interior) - Dole whip pretty much comparable to the one at Disneyland - Docked a star for the painfully-basic soft-serve ice cream flavor options overall (at the time that I visited, the matcha option was swapped with chocolate) ---------- I got the ahboong (fish-shaped waffle cone on top of soft-serve ice cream). Vanilla/dole whip swirl was my soft-serve ice cream choice and I had custard as the waffle filling (I actually don't really recommend this waffle/soft-serve flavor combo.....I already knew this ahead of time but I wanted to try the custard and the dole whip in one visit.....more about this in a bit). The taiyaki (the fish waffle) batter is pretty much perfected here. Light crispy exterior with a thick yet satisfyingly chewy, almost mochi-like, interior (ultimate ASMR experience). I really liked it a lot.....I might even consider the one here being better than the one at that *other* place that specializes in ahboong and also has a two-word-repeat business name. As for the custard, it's basic but gets the job done. Yes, I've had the dole whip at Disneyland, and, yes, the dole whip here is pretty comparable to the one at that theme park. I'm not the biggest fan of dole whip (it's a bit too tart for me.....if you're not in the know, dole whip is essentially soft-serve ice cream made with pineapple juice). I had the dole whip/vanilla swirl and I can't imagine how extra tart the full-blown dole whip here is. The dole whip's tartness doesn't go well with the taiyaki (ordering just soft-serve ice cream is an option here, but for ahboong-first-timers, I suggest pairing the fish with a soft-serve ice cream flavor that is more on the creamy-tasting side). Nonetheless, if you're missing on Disneyland's dole whip, your craving will be satisfied here. Overall pretty good ahboong. Stellar taiyaki. I docked a star because of the painfully-basic soft-serve ice cream flavor library (the matcha flavor option was swapped with chocolate at the time that I visited). Though, I suppose the basic variety of flavors is understood as the business stand is located right in front of the Marshalls entrance (I saw passerby confused with the whole ahboong concept).
