Beware, mochis sold here are not filled with ice cream like the ones you may be use to consuming at Japanese restaurants. They are instead filled with different types of sweet bean and other things. I've tried the chocolate lover's, chunky peanut butter and peanut butter with chocolate chip. I like the chunky peanut butter the best, but overall the ice cream filled ones still taste better to me. This is a small little market and upon entering you will see a display case with different mochis and manju's. They are about $1.25 each I think. I normally just get the prepacked ones with 4 in it. There is also an assortment of Asian snacks and some premade food to go. You can also order nachos and snow cones but you must go back outside the store and order through the window. The first time I was here, the BF and I were the only customers in the store. We purchased our mochis inside the store and wanted to get some nachos too. The young gentleman working told us we had to go outside and order at the window. So we went outside and low and behold who takes our nacho order at the window...the same dude!! WTF?!! This place is definitely not cheap and your nachos or snow cones will add up to a pretty penny for all your add ons (extra cheese, jalapenos, additional flavor on snow cone). I've been her twice and I may again but it is definitely not my first choice when I want something sweet. read more

Love getting shaved ice here during the summer - purchase from outside window area. These are affordably priced AND bigger than you think - even an extra small is pretty big! Kintoki is one of my faves - shaved ice, red bean, sweet syrup, but I also love the more traditional strawberry. I've also tried their nachos here - big portions and one happy smile on my face from the cheesy goodness. This is the place to go for mochi - fresh, soft, and just yummy! My fave is the mochi filled with peanut butter/pb + chocolate. Oh yum! And I also love the mochi with kinako (soy bean flour). This place is more traditional Japanese and sells mochi, manju, and many other tasty Japanese treats. I have yet to try some of the food they sell here, but I am sure it tastes good. read more

Best I mean best monju in town!!!!!! I ordered 5 dozen for a party favors for a family party and they turned out amazing and looks very presentable too. I mainly come here for the snow cones or shaved ice...whatever you want to call it. The only downside is you can only have one flavor of ice! They will not mix. I always get mine with vanilla ice cream and I don't know what kind of ice cream they use, maybe crystal, but it is deliciously creamy and delightful!!!! You also have the option of getting it "snow capped" which means add condensed milk to the top. I don't particularly like it like that, but it's considered Hawaiian style. Yum! The best snowcone I've ever had. I just discovered the whole "add ice cream" to the mix. Delish! i was lucky that my first time there, there wasn't a huge line or wait. I love their Peanut Butter Mochi! They have three different kinds: chunky peanut butter, smooth peanut butter and chocolate peanut butter (smooth). It would be a tie between the chunky peanut butter and chocolate peanut butter. If those two were combined (chunky chocolate peanut butter) then I would be so happy! In general, their mochi is super soft. I've left an opened tray of mochi on the counter for up to 3-4 days and the mochi was still pretty soft. A must get is their Kintoki with green tea ice cream! The Kintoki is basically shaved ice with red bean in this sweet syrup. The shaved ice just literally melts in your mouth. But surprisingly, it doesn't melt fast when you're just holding it trying to finish it. Their servings are pretty huge. I still think their mochi is freakin awesome. The peanut butter chocolate chip mochi gets me every time.. However, this time my review is for their Shaved Ice. Of all this hype for these korean shaved ice around the bay area etc- I still have yet to find shaved ice as finely shaved as Osaka Ya. It melts smoothly in your mouth liked powdered snow haha. The Kintoki Shaved Ice with a scoop of green tea ice cream, and that powder tea- HANDS DOWN one of the best freakin dessert I've ever heard. And to have in on a hot sunny day in Sac? I love this place. Their mochi is really nice. I like it better than the "runny" mochi I found in SF. And, hey! It's a lot closer than SF too! That being said, they've had some issues with making orange mochi. It seemed like for years orange mochi was a special order. The last time I was there, they had a big plate of it out. Yay... but the taste was a little off. Not a lot off.. but a bit. I was told they had problems with their orange flavor supplier. OK. Fair enough. Oh, and if you are like me, and scoffed at the shaved ice. I mean with the super HTF mochi right there, why wait in line? Right? Well, I broke down, and tried the shaved ice. My most favorite mochi happens to be a seasonal one. Sakura mochi (ones that wrapped in leaves) is only available around February/March. Chofu, it is mochi with pancake wrap. Not overly sweet and I love having a couple of those for breakfast. Orange mochi, very flavorful! I feel like biting into a fresh orange with this mochi. I've tried other fruity flavors such as raspberry, lemon, blueberry, and I didn't care for them. Plain mochi, they are cut in cubes and covered with some powdery substance. It probably did not sound good the way I describe it, but it is actually quite good and I get a box every time I stop by. Sumo, those tofu wrapped rice balls are killer! And they only cost $5.00. Other red bean filled mochi with names I can't remember are also good but I just don't eat them all the time. They are a bit too sweet for my sweet tooth. I love their shaved ice but I only had it once and I'm not entirely sure why. The staff are very pleasant and patient. They will explain each mochi in detail if you ask. I always leave Osaka Ya a happy customer with a handful of mochi treats. read more

My first experience with Mango shaved ice, Gunthers ice cream, and condensed milk. Ummmm, YUM. Very close to where I live, remember, cash only at the outside shaved ice window, so bring your cash, and you can bring your dog too! I also went inside the separate store part, and got some Japanese biscuits as well. They were kind enough to fill my dogs portable water bowl since she was outside and so hot and panting. Nice workers, friendly and yummy desserts. I recommend for a hot summers day. Lines can get long though, but its worth the wait. The only thing they could maybe work on is some park benches or something for seating. read more

Didn't know this place existed, found by accident and am sure glad we did! Cute little shop, very small inside. Has lots of varieties of mochis and other sweet snacks that I would not be able to find anywhere else. They are freshly made. Customer service is good, the cashiers were helpful in answering questions (I'm a noob when it comes to these kind of snacks). I pick and chose 1 of each and tried them all! (I don't suggest trying them all in one sitting). I liked some other than others, not because of the quality from Osaka Ya, they are awesome, but because of my preference. The snow cone was amazing. Went with a medium strawberry. Excellent for summertime in Sacto. Our friends got a large root beer snow cone with ice cream- they raved about it (and it was bigger than their baby's head)! Next time I'm getting ice cream in mine! Went on Sunday afternoon and it was slammed- waited for a very long time... Just know that it might take a while to get your order but the wait is worth it! Open 10-6 in the summertime. The service at this place sucks and the wait is ridiculous. You could be the only one in line and still wait 20 minutes for your shaved ice. They also make you pay cash and there is no seating anywhere. You have to stand on the sidewalk or take it to your car. The only reasons we still go there are lack of options, and because we like the kintoki shaved ice. It's shaved ice with green tea powder, condensed milk, and red beans. We like to add vanilla ice cream on the bottom. I used to buy the peanut butter and chocolate mochi from inside the store but when I saw how the young guy was taking the money, answering the phone, wiping his face/mouth with his hands and then on his pants then grabbing the mochi to package it for me with his bare hands, it grossed me out! But if you can get past the lack of cleanliness, the chocolate or choc/pb mochi is actually tasty. read more

I don't know about the walk in service, but delivery was great! A friend order a box for me and it was sent to San Diego FedEx Express. It was just as I remember Manju to be. Yummy! I'm from Stockton, and I remember as a kid my dad would take my brothers and me to visit relatives in Sacramento for the holiday's. He would always stop by this one shop and pick up several boxes of these confectioneries, and I loved them. I don't know what shop it was, but they would put them in pink boxes and wrap them in white paper with thin ribbon. I hear most shops closed and Osaka-ya is the last one in Sacramento. I don't know of any place in San Diego, so I'll be ordering from them again. Anyone know of any San Diego shops that bake them fresh daily? read more

My favorites here are chofu, peanut butter mochi (smooth and crunchy), chocolate peanut butter mochi, and shaved ice w/ ice cream on the bottom!! =D Only place like it in town and so good! I came here on a hot Sunday afternoon. I stood in line, placed my order, and received my shaved ice fast! Well, fast enough, considering that the workers have to churn that ice out and apply some elbow grease. I opted for a watermelon shaved ice with strawberry ice cream combination. 3.5. The crunchy peanut butter mochi was good in an interesting way. I feel like it's not a conventional flavor. The mochi itself is soft and pillowy. We came a little after ten and they didn't hAve many out on display. They did have more traditional flavors like white and red beans but I didn't try them. The butter mochi is only sold on Sundays. We ordered the cherry snow come with vanilla ice cream and added condensed milk and mochi. It was a really satisfying dessert. Sweet and cool and relatively cheap. The snow cone was definitely the normal crunchy ice kind instead of the fluffy dense kind. The cherry syrup went really well with the vanilla ice cream. It was so yummy. If I was in the area is definitely try to come back for the ice cream but not really the mochi. read more

I went here after a professor raved about this place. I wish the employees would give me their recommendations. I told him it was our first time, what should we order and what to expect. I was told the "Kintoki" was popular and I ordered a strawberry one. At first it was yum, something new..ice and beans. As I reached the bottom it was really sweet. I didn't even get to eat the beans because they were bathing in strawberry flavor. My "pseudo-son" had a regular strawberry cone with condensed milk (like another Yelper recommended) which was delicious! In the near future, I would probably order a regular snow cone with a dribble of flavoring and condensed milk. The condensed milk, in my opinion, adhere to the ice and melted it slowly. It's hard to describe the texture and taste but it was delicious and a must try. read more
