The sashimi was good and that was cut at the sushi bar. 15 small pieces for $26. I ended up ordering two more dishes as sashimi doesnt fill you up much. When the dinner is going to be $60 with tip for one, I would as a sushi chef probably try to make you feel special... perhaps say have you tried this.. and give a small taste of something new. Had a seaweed salad that was great! Then A Dragon Roll and a Spider Roll and a Chicken Yakitori and a Coke for 43bux $50 after tip... The quality of food was awful. The spider roll bland . The Dragon Roll was pretty to look at but not eat and nothing special. The Chicken was chewy. And all fried parts of the roll were fried to a crisp so NO taste or pleasnt texture was left... My last bite of the Dragon roll tasted like fish soap.. Super bummed to spend 50$ on a horrible lunch. We will never go back. :( They get one star due to no 0 stars being offered. read more

I have been coming here for years - like 15 years. My kids were raised on this sushi! Gary is always behind the counter and ready for a chat. The sushi is great and they are always willing to make you what you would like. Even if it doesn't exist. He will listen and create you something. There are even great off menu items he makes. Just ask. There are reviews on here where the people are not happy with service or food. You just need to take a minute and speak to Gary or his wife - they will make it right. You can always compare this to other sushi restaurants and say they are better or this is better...It is a matter of preference. I bounce between this restaurant and another one and it all depends on the special rolls I am in the mood for! Gary also had at one time a Chinese food restaurant downtown - it was very good too, but is now closed. There are some Chinese food items on the menu which are very good. Stopped in for quick sushi. We ordered one nigori saki, one spicy tuna and one dynamite roll. $30.00. We eat sushi all of the time and I must say they do not use fresh fish. The spicy tuna roll was as mushy and soggy and disgusting as I've ever had. The dynamite roll, which was cooked, actually had good flavor. The rolls were small.... not what we're used to. The ambience was extremely appealing, Asian music playing in the background, and the Decour was a little more upscale than most sushi spots. I cannot agree with the other reviewer's when they state the sushi seafood is fresh; it is not. I would suggest finding another restaurant if you're seeking good sushi. The Good: If you have never been, or have never tried the Martini Prawns - you must start there. The owner, Gary, is always there and we love sitting at the bar and watching him as well as learning about new items. The food is excellent, the service can vary (outside of the bar)- largely because it is almost always busy. By sitting at the bar, you can also learn about items that are not on the menu - like the Utah Roll. Try it. The sashimi is always fresh, cold and tasty. The Bad: I would give it solid 5 based on atmosphere and quality but as I stated, the service can vary if you are not at the bar. There are a few staff members that are just not the friendliest. A friend of mine who's eaten at Osake many times suggested with we have lunch there. It was, without a doubt, the best Japanese food I've ever eaten. I love Japanese cuisine and have no idea why I never tried Osaka before. We began with cold, unfiltered sake served in an exquisite wooden box along with the Marilyn Monroe at the bar where we visited with the remarkable Gary Chu. This place has had the best sushi in Santa Rosa for at least a decade! The way they soak the seaweed must be different because it's always milder & smoother than other sushi experiences. The fish is has always been sushi quality every time I've been here... some weeks we come twice, it's that good! My favorite are the Naked Lori, & their California roll. The unagi is great & the dragon roll will knock your socks off! All the prawn rolls are delish. The martini prawns kick ass & the Teriaky chicken is my moms favorite in town! Great food as always. Unfortunately the vibe from the servers was less than appealing. Noting that their website had asked that diners focus on completing their dining experience in an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes is understandable. We respected that during our visit. They have obviously "spread out" the seating arrangement offering fewer table to turn during an evening of dining. Appreciate their focus keeping the space as safe as possible. However, from the Martini Prawns through the last item, our servers were hovering over us constantly offering to take plates away. Even items that were obviously not finished. Towards the end of our time, of which we were still "well in bounds", the rush by the staff to cycle dessert and get us out of there was really off putting. Again, still within our "allotted time". We will go back but hopefully their engagement with their diners can be less intrusive. read more

I must say this Restaurant is by far the best sushi i ever have had. One could say that Gary Chu has ruined it for me, I cant eat anywhere but his place the fish is so fresh every bite sends you to a bliss. The man has great specials just ask him by sitting at the sushi bar. If sushi isn't your thing he's got great bento dinners and entree's. I love his miso soup also best in the area. Osake has come to be a place for me to get together with good friends and family. To get away from day to day things and enjoy laughs, new dishes and create great memories. The seating is good with a good size sushi bar also has a banquet room in back for large parties. The services has always been fast and friendly very knowledgeable about menu and Gary's specials. Lot's of parking and easy to find right off farmers lane and hwy12. This is the top Japanese restaurant in the North Bay and I'd even say in the San Francisco Bay area as a whole! Gary Chu has mastered what it is to present spectacular food coupled with phenomenal and professional service across the board. The first time I came here I was still a little skeptical about sushi; but this place turned me into a sushi fanatic. Everyone is talking about the prawn martinis (which are delicious), and if you like the sauce on those then you will love the Marilyn MonRoll (which has the same sauce); also, a good fact to know is that they sell this secret sauce (: I also suggest the chocolate ginger dessert (: (: Also, I HIGHLY SUGGEST taking a seat at the bar and letting Gary make whatever he want to make you-not only will it be delicious and off the menu, but it will also be unique and like nothing you have had before. He really is an artist with his food. Beware: this is not a restaurant for the cheap. The meals are pretty pricey but worth it. Even though it is pricey, I would still suggest this as a place more for family, business meetings, friends, as opposed to dates. The reason for this being that the layout of the restaurant is not as intimate as one would want for a date. Also, they have a HUGE fish tank which is perfect for keeping kids distracted and their is a little more room for large parties and kids to stretch their legs. Plus, the noise level is a little louder. The staff is always super nice. Gary is always at the bar, greeting guests and participating in conversation. It's frustrating when your neighborhood restaurant has really good food and TERRIBLE service. It wasn't just one time either. Because it happened a couple times, I feel inclined to write this review. I even expressed my regrets with Gary whom acknowledged the fact I constantly was getting up to retrieve my waiter for my tables and my needs. With him acknowledging that, he appeared to unfazed by my dining displeasure. As if he didn't really care much. Sat at the bar the second time. A real bummer. I sent my husband to pick up an order we placed over the phone and when he got there they had lost it, when he got home we were missing a roll that we had paid for. So he drove all the way back and got the one they missed. They didnt offer us anything for their mistake and the food was very disappointing. I ordered 2 orders of sashimi thinking it would be 4 pieces of just raw fish and Mr Chu brought out a plate of 10 pieces. He then put another plate in front of us with 10 pieces. I stopped him and told him we just wanted 4 pieces of each fish and he was so angry!! He huffed and puffed and dogged us the entire meal! I apoligised numerous times, I felt so bad. He never once said its ok or gave a smile or anything. He was mad at me. It was so uncomfortable. He proceeded to be over the top nice to everyone else who came in but when it came time to talk with me he sounded so angry. I usually love the service and and def love the sushi. Id love to come back, but being that Gary really does not like me, Im not sure I can trust he wont do something gross to the sushi I order. :( big sad face. read more

This place was recommended to us by a friend. Osake is a below average Japanese establishment that mostly caters to the local crowd. Staff was nice, the dining area was not the cleanest. Our table actually had not been wiped properly. The corners of the table had crumbs, and other left over food. We went for lunch, looked like a slow day. I had a bento box (wasn't feeling sushi that day), with tempura and chicken teriyaki. The tempura was ok, until I had a zucchini that was obviously cut on a board that had fish on it. Yes, zucchini was flavored with fish. The chicken teriyaki seemed to be Pre-cooked, with no flavor, well except for the bottled sauce poured on the chicken. I won't speak for the other guests I dined with, but we all were disappointed with the quality of the food. For a few bucks more, drive down to Rohnert Park, and go to Hana Japanese. read more

Inviting atmosphere and friendly people, but slow service and rather pricey. I'll be honest, the food here is really good and Gary is a gem of a owner - engaging, playful and funny. For myself, however, I prefer authentic Japanese food where the flavors are subtle and perfectly balance. Conversely, this place is about "in your face" flavors that don't honor the Japanese tradition and feels a bit phoney... tons of rolls that a Japanese people wouldn't even recognize. And, let's face it, Philly cream cheese and Dijon mustard just don't belong in a Japanese restaurant. Food is okay, but not really a sushi place. I always worry when a sushi place say they are great with martini shrimp or tempura? That is not sushi. That is Asian fusion and Japanese food, respectively. Rolls have too much sauce on them. How do you tell if the fish are any good when all you can taste is the sauce. read more

One star for the hair in my food that I paid for Three stars for the food quality I was dining with a business contact for lunch, toward the end of the meal I realized there was a black hair in my food (I'm blonde). The hostess came to check on us and I pointed out hte hair. She was very apologetic and said she would tell Gary. She came back to the table with the bill and said she had to charge me for my meal. It was hard to understand her with her accent but it sounded like she said that because they couldn't really be sure where the hair came from they were going to have to charge me. In the end I didn't feel my $11 meal was worth the argument so we paid our bill and left. With a policy of charging customers for inedible foreign objects in their food I will not be dining at any Gary Chu restaurants in the future. Came here after Yao-Kiku closed earlier than expected on New Years Eve. Fancy decor, dark and intimate atmosphere, cold room temperature. Overcooked flavorless rice used for the sushi. What a shame too, because the ingredients were the best I've had in a while. In my opinion, though, the blandness and mushiness of the rice was definitely a deal breaker. I hear the martini prawns are great, but I didn't even bother after getting through the three rolls of disaster. This place was an afterthought sort of option to begin with, so if I'm ever in the area again I won't even bother coming back.
