We made reservations for a Friday night. Servers were very friendly and helpful. Our drinks were excellent. She brought out fresh made bread with butter. We started with the amazing she crab soup. My wife ordered the chicken piccata with mashed potatoes. It had so much flavor. I got the prime rib cooked perfectly with a Caesar salad. The crust was seasoned so good. I expected a $55 price for this prime selection but it was only $35. The restaurant is an old Florida home where Oscar Penn raised a large family before the restaurant started. The chef is so good. We dined here tonight, admittedly, I had high expectations! The menu is amazing, to read. The building itself is an historic house."The Mcleold house". It's in a bit of disrepair, peeling paint dry rotted window sashes, in managed landscaping, Etc. We were greeted quickly and shown out table. The server was very nice and professional. I started w/ a glass of sangria (Which was excellent!). I'd highly suggest trying the sangria! I also Ordered a bottle Pere' water. We were given a bread, which was ok...I asked for some oil & balsamic, or a pesto...it appeared I was an alien by the servers reaction "we got olive oil and butter". So I stepped that. We ordered our starters and knew our mains, the server said she delay putting in the ticket until we were close to finishing our apps, she did a great job, it was seamless! Apps were scalloped scallops and figs wrapped in bacon, then smoked or grilled. The figs were delicious, the scallops needed seasoning and was ok. Ok Ceaser, could have used a better dressing, more authentic style would be nice...but it was pretty bland, but good ingredients. I ordered the pork shop w/ gravy (ask for the gravy, You want the gravy). My wife wanted prime rib, but that was off the menu tonight. Instead a NY strip prepared basics the same... She wasn't impressed. I thought it was OK, I think she had her heart set on the prime rib. After we figured out how to get in to park because it was in a yard behind a parking lot it was a delightful experience. It's a charming old Florida house converted into separate dining rooms/areas. Our server was the bartender/server for our table so we kept our orders basic. Dirty Martini, House Cab and House Chardonnay and a cranberry and Vodka. Loved the interesting dates wrapped in bacon app. Hubby ordered the twin tails. They were healthy tails I must say and I had the Delmonico. Food was all terrific. Will go again for sure. read more

From the various items we ordered, we all highly recommend the she-crab soup- it's hot, silky, creamy with balanced flavors of crab and sherry. Other standouts were the risotto (sizeable portion), the pork chop (tender and simple), and the tuna poke. Some of things we recommend you skip are the fish dip and ceviche appetizers... nothing special. Make sure you make reservations, it fills easily. My friend had planned on having the prime rib but all they had was blackened prime rib, which he had never heard of or had so decided on the Delmonico steak which was good. Friends and I dined at Oscar Penn's last night, as our Christmas dinner go to. We have been there many times and choose it to be our favorite restaurant for celebrations! The She Crab soup was heavenly. Two of us ordered it while the other friend had the tuna sushi. He raved about it! They ordered the Macaroni and cheese with lobster. Huge portions with very large pieces of lobster . I had the prime rib, salad and added on mashed potatoes. Cooked perfectly! Manny, our waiter, was warm,welcoming, and did everything properly. Right off the bat, I will say that the food is pretty good. We ordered prime rib with the Caesar salad, sushi, spinach artichoke dip, and stuffed salmon. The stuffed salmon came with risotto which had a very sweet drizzle over it, I would request it without that in the future. Everything else ranged from average to good. The thing I didn't appreciate was the ambience, or lack there of. For steakhouse prices (we spent $130 for 2 people), the interior decor and furniture was cheap. Our table was coming apart and it looked like something a group of 85 year old men have played cards at for thirty years in a basement. Walmart curtains are used to separate dining areas and I had a lovely view of an industrial floor mat as I ate. I cannot justify the prices when the atmosphere is lacking. read more

We dined here last night.. we had a party of 10..David was our server and took excellent care of us..very attentive and explained the features to us before we placed our order..some of the ladies ordered Soup and Appetizers and they were all very pleased with their selections..they loved the soup and the creative design on the top of it as well...great presentation on the appetizers and also on the Sushi and Pole Bowls that were served...Nice menu with choices of items that you do not see everyday at other places you go to..I like that a lot..I had a hard time deciding and that is a good thing meaning that I will be back to try the others! Everything we tried was a winner. This cozy "steak & seafood" restaurant is in a house built in 1915 by Oscar Penn - hence the name - in a historic district in Inverness. Small rooms throughout the house have been tastefully redesigned to hold two to four tables, plus a pleasant outdoor porch for another 8 or ten more tables. A guitarist provided pleasant background music while we dined (inside). Staff was polite, cheery, and efficient, and we got to meet owner Jason Counsil before ordering. I started with Scallops Au Gratin: four fresh scallops in a cheese sauce that was just perfect. Our party of four shared a sushi dish of an Oscar Penn's creation with tuna, avocado and just deliciousness - it went quickly so my pic only captured the last piece before it disappeared, too. My main course was Smoked Prime Rib, something I hadn't seen on a menu before and Wow: medium rare prime with a bold smoke flavor made tastier with an au jus sauce. Creamy Horseradish Sauce is not my personal favorite, but this version made a great complement. Around the rest of the table people had Ahi Tuna (pic), Steak Au Poivre, and a Steak Dominique. No complaints at all. Wisely, I stopped halfway thru my main course to save room for a taste of dessert. The Chocolate Molten Lava Brownie did not disappoint: rich, warm dark chocolate with fresh whipped cream. Others had NY Cheese Cake or Key Lime Pie. Just a lovely dining experience overall and one we'll repeat if we can, in spite of the 90-minute drive. Note: parking is a bit mysterious, but there's a free municipal lot behind the restaurant on N Pine Ave beautifully shaded with live oaks that leads you onto the back porch. read more

We came for the special New Year's Eve dinner. They had a special menu for the evening. I feel as if they should've offered a chicken choice or a pasta choice for those who don't eat red meat or seafood. I opted for the Twin Lobster Tails. Unfortunately mine were a bit undercooked or not fresh. The meat was an unusual, very mushy texture. The asparagus looked an awful yellow color and tasted old. The mashed potatoes were over-salted and luke-warm. My husband got the Prime Rib. It was a large generous portion but was way over-seasoned with thyme, which overpowered the flavor of the meat. The appetizers (rumake) and desserts were quite good though and the service was thoughtful and attentive. For the price and occasion, I was a bit underwhelmed. I was also a bit concerned when I come to a nice restaurant and see that the table next to us is actually a folding card table?! Might give them another try in the future but they need to up their game up a bit for the price paid! read more

We were looking for a nice place to celebrate our 1 year anniversary and after reading reviews, we chose Oscar Penn. we were so disappointed Our evening started off on a bad note when we had trouble actually finding the restaurant! It was night time and the area of the restaurant is very dimly lit, and the Oscar Penn sign is not lit up at all. The streets are narrow, dark and there are no street lights anywhere in the area. Our nav said we had arrived but we couldn't see a parking lot or really even many other cars to indicate we had arrived. We finally parked near the (back?) and walked up the steps to a patio area. We were very early for our reservation but thought we could sit outside and have a cocktail. We were greeted and told they could seat us even tho we were over an hour early which was very nice. There was a gentleman singing and playing acoustic guitar which was also very nice. Sadly, our evening went downhill from there. I ordered a glass of red (the highest priced one @$13 per glass) and my husband decided to try an amber ale. The server came back with our drinks, a pretty minimal pour of the red and a unopened can of beer, no glass for the beer... which seemed a little a bit odd for what we thought was an upscale restaurant. When he went to open the beer it exploded all over the table. The waitress came and saw the mess, said she would get him another napkin & placemat, and asked if he wanted a glass and he said yes. She brought the glass along with new placemat/napkin. Turns out the beer had some kind of nitrous pellet (?) inside which apparently malfunctioned... we didn't even know about nitrous beer, but apparently it's a thing. Long story short, the malfunction also affected the flavor so she ended up bringing him another beer which worked out fine. Unfortunately my wine had that distinct taste of a wine that had sat too long after being opened... so the waitress offered to bring me a fresh pour, which she did and it was much better. She also brought some bread and butter, three very small thin slices of bread that was actually pretty good, but very small. We started off with the crab cakes appetizer, which was two crab cakes that had decent flavor but were primarily filler, not a lot of actual crab. After looking over the menu, my husband ordered the "Delmonico steak tips in a marsala glaze with penne pasta". This came served in a bowl like a soup with a broth like base. The meat was small pieces, reasonably tender but not what we expected from the description. I couldn't decide on an entree so I ended up ordering the seared ahi tuna appetizer. The ahi was three decent sized pieces served with about a tablespoon of a pineapple relish and about a tablespoon of some kind of slaw. It was just ok. Overall we were very underwhelmed and expected much better. Probably won't return. read more

This adorable place is an older home with a large patio and first floor rooms are the dining areas. So charming. Such a reminder of the wonderful French restaurants I've been to in Chicago. The food was amazing. Of course the Steak Oscar is amazing. The Deserts are to die for. Macadamia nut crusted Key Lime Pie is something dreams are made of. Service was prompt, kind and thoughtful. The tables do not stay empty for long on the weekend. Finding this quality of ingredients and recipes in central Florida has been a challenge. Cuisine wise OP is the best restaurant I've dined at in Florida. Upscale dining in a Florida casual historic home atmosphere. Get the kids a babysitter so you can enjoy the meal. You don't expect to find such a unique menu in the town of Inverness but there it is. We had reservations for two in a Saturday night. The restaurant was busy hosting a birthday party in the open area next door. The wait staff was great but clearly overwhelmed this particular night. I suspect their service would be more attentive and personal on a less crowded weeknight. When you make your reservation be sure to ask if it's indoor or outdoor seating. Both are available. We decided on the Braised Figs and She Crab Soup for appetizers. For entrees we chose the Stuffed Salmon and Seafood Risotto. A bottle of Chenin Blanc went perfect as did the Key Lime Pie for dessert. Portions are above average size; we took some home. I can't say enough about food preparation and presentation. I went early and had the lobster roll. Absolutely delicious! The owner came over and we chatted for awhile. Such a lovely man! The entire wait staff were also so pleasant and accommodating! Our second visit to Oscar Penn's leading to many more. The restaurant is located just off of downtown Inverness in the McLeod House, a quaint old home in a picturesque setting under large oak trees. Three of us had the smoked prime rib, a weekend special, and one had the venison meat loaf, very enjoyable for all. The servings are large, so some went home with us to enjoy later. As a matter of fact, my wife and I just enjoyed eggs with left over prime rib. You will find Jason, owner/chef, roaming around the dining rooms visiting with patrons during dinner. Our server, Jayme, took great care of us helping with all our needs. The menu is broad, so no problem finding something for everyone in you group. This will be a regular for us, even though it is a short road trip for us. read more

Nestled a couple blocks from downtown Inverness, this restaurant is a gem. Chef Jason is very talented. We shared the She Crab soup which was beyond fabulous! I had the prime rib special and my mom had makers mark salmon- both were flavorful and cooked perfectly.
