We took 25 people to Oscar Store after a funeral. There was one waitress for us because they were very busy on a Saturday. She provided superb service! First she took the drink orders and turned those in. Then she took the appetizer orders and turned those in. Then she got the meal orders. Everything came out very timely--drinks, appetizers then the meals. Perfect. That's some good restaurant staff teamwork. Every meal was delicious, no one had a complaint. Great job by the staff!

The staff is so friendly and we were seated immediately. Our server took our drink order and appetizer order right away. We started with the Fried Mushrooms and they were really flavorful and served with home made ranch dressing. We also tried the fried Squash which was really good. The Fried Pickles weren't bad just not our favorite. My grilled chicken salad was probably one of the best salads I've had! Portions are large and we left with plenty of leftovers. My daughter had the steak and LOVED IT! This hidden gem is definitely a place we will go to again when we're back in Texas.

The food was pretty good. I had the fried catfish, baked potato, and coleslaw. I forgot to take a picture. I've never had coleslaw like theirs, I wouldn't say it was good or bad. I also got coconut cream pie and a pineapple pie to go... I'll do another review of those when I try them. The service was great and the ambiance has a fun family feel. I'd definitely go back because there's more I want to try!

Stopped in for a late lunch, and ordered standard Texas diner chicken fried steak and fried catfish. Entrees came with two sides and choice of gravy. also ordered some fried squash as a starter. Service was fast and friendly, and the meals came out quickly. Everything tasted great, and the portions incl the squash, were very generous. Had to get a couple of doggy bags to take home. All the fried items were very fresh, didn't taste like everything was dumped into the same prep. They also had several dessert options, but will have to leave to next time, we were too full from the meal. Plenty of parking, outside out back is set up for live music, and they have alcohol options if you'd like. Old time paper check to table, pay at the register on the way out. Another old timey type place if you have fond memories of country diners from back when.

Oscar Store 02-10-25 I have been wanting to try this place out for a couple of months. The timing never worked out or my grandkids didn't want to try anything new. We finally made it! And am I happy we did. The friendly staff sat us as soon as we arrived. They took our drink order and appetizer order right away. Oh My Gosh! Our Appetizers, The Fried Mushrooms were flavorful and served with ranch dressing. The Fried Squash is totally awesome. It also was served with ranch dressing, and my daughter ate them with honey mustard. The Fried Pickles were good but not that exciting. Don't get me wrong. I'm just not a Fried Pickle person. Two of my grandsons really liked them. We ordered for our meals: The Chicken Fried Steak with Gravy, Mashed Potatoes, Home cut Fries, and a roll. The steak was tender and flavorful. That was my dish and I really enjoyed it. The Chicken Tenders, with Gravy, Fried Okra, and Huge Onion Rings which were cooked perfect! Chicken was moist and tender. Good Batter. The Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich, Home Cut Fries, check out the photo! It's bigger than the bun! The Large Double Meat Cheeseburger with Home Cut Fries. It was huge! Not sure if you can tell that I was very pleased with our visit. The staff were friendly and efficient. They have a large dining room with others available. We look forward to coming back to Oscars and trying different items on the menu!

Locals restaurant place for gathering! Staff was tad overwhelmed as nothing but big groups but with that they were super welcoming and you never felt rushed! We were seated quickly; food was amazing, the best chicken fried steak we've had. This will be a MUST pop in when traveling to and from home.

Great atmosphere, delicious food, and awesome service. The CFS is perfect. These days everything is pricy, but you won't feel ripped off because the service is great, restaurant is very clean, and well, the food is mouth watering. I enjoyed every bite, can't wait to go back.

Was in the Temple area today on business around lunchtime. I Googled "best restaurants in Temple" and Oscar Store popped up with the reviews stating "best chicken fried steak hands down". Well, that's a mighty bold claim I've heard MANY times before, and I've literally tried them all over Texas. I wanted to check out this mythical place for myself. I got the CFS plate with mashed potatoes and fried okra. Holy Cow!! It didn't disappoint! Chicken Fried Steak Plate 9/10 - the meat was a thicker cut than most. I personally don't like the beat to death, paper thin sliver that's all crust. This my friends was a CFS with substance. The meat was seasoned well. The batter was crispy and well flavored. The gravy was above average and very good. I really enjoyed it! Mashed Potatoes 8/10 - good consistency and texture. The flavor and overall vibe of the potatoes was they were homemade. Gravy was same as CFS. Fried Okra 6/10 - nothing special here. Seemed like run of the mill frozen okra. They were still good though. Roll 9/10 - not sure what kind of roll they put in the plate, but it sure was good. Almost seemed like a honey butter flavored roll? Service 9/10 - everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. Can't say enough about the small town hospitality! Thank y'all! Atmosphere 8/10 - old building with rustic charm. I think it was built in 1932 originally. Lots of cool items inside and out. Overall 9/10 - highly recommend you try it out if you're in the area. Heck, we might road trip from NB to try it again! It's worth it!! This place is a hidden gem! Large place, with room to enjoy your food and your conversation without rubbing elbows with the next table. Service was spectacular. She was friendly, down to earth, and very helpful with suggestions. Menu covers about anything you want. We had burgers and fries. Both were nice and hot, full of flavor, and huge. Sweet tea was perfect. Next trip will be chicken fried steak. It looked amazing! read more

We were going to Greens Sausage to try the cafe but it was close to closing so we found this little place. It's very farmhouse like, with some of the sweetest waitresses. Their menu is not big , but what they prepare is good. My husband ordered catfish , mashed potatoes and veggies. I had fried shrimp,butterflied and breaded, corn on the cob and a house salad with thousand island dressing. The salad was fresh ,green and crispy. Shrimp had fresh of the sea taste. We also ordered sweet tea and cobblers (cherry/peach). I was pleasantly surprise to see crust as opposed to biscuit type of dough. Lovely brown crust and plump juicy cherries. Side note, the restroom/outhouse, is actually outside of the restaurant. They do also offer live music with a bandstand and outdoor seating. read more

We had a family party to celebrate my parents' 90th birthdays at Oscar Store. The evening couldn't have been better. The food was amazing and the service was perfect. The room in the back of the restaurant provided privacy and space to visit for a few hours. The staff made everything so easy for us. Thomas and his team are great people. Had the chance to visit and eat at this great local place for the first time. It was recommended by a client and well worth the trip on our way to Ash Acres Farms in Belton. Even though she was a newer member of the team, Heaven took great care of us. Very personable and attentive. The food was all scratch made. The chicken fried steak and gravy on point and even the homemade biscuits, fried pickles and cheese-sticks made us feel like we were having dinner at a friends house. A great place for locals and visitors alike. Will definitely be back. read more

We were disappointed after reading all the wonderful reviews!!! Service was very hurry up, I don't have time for this attitude!! The Salad (payed extra) was served with the meal!! Both the Chicken fry steak and Chicken fried Chicken had no flavor!! It looked beautiful though.. Even pepper gravy had no flavor nor mashed potatoes. The glasses of tea were huge, Straws barely reached top of glass. The ticket was thrown down on table along with plates, we had to get waitress attention for my husbands cobbler and ice cream. She never bothered to see if we needed anything else! Oscar's is located in middle of no where. If you want a really good fry, just go to Old Jody's restaurant, you will be happier and not have to drive so far from Temple! read more

This place is definitely worth the drive. You'll miss it if you're not looking for it. Great home cookin'! The chicken fried steak just melted in my mouth. The fried jalapeños and fried pickles were some of the best I've ever had. The salad wasn't anything special (quite a bit of brown lettuce actually) and the double cheeseburger was SO thick. I prefer thin patties so it wasn't really up my alley but the flavor was good. I definitely recommend this place just based on the food but the service was so so. I'd love to come back when they have live music to be able to enjoy the cool outdoor patio area. read more

People talked this place up and said we had to try it. Ok so I've been three times now over the last two years. I guess my standards are a little high but this is just a medium quality country restaurant. The CFS was good but the salad was low quality and the choices are pretty limited to almost all fried foods. The atmosphere has great unmet potential. There's space for outdoor seating even live music, a playground for kids? Maybe even a "store" for fun unique food stuffs and merch. I will say folks are friendly and the service was good. Just seems this place is holding itself back and could take a few steps up. A solid 3 stars. read more

Hey guys, you really need to take a short trip off the beaten path and find your way to Oscar's Store. It's just a short (highway 35 on Little Elm Creek and Farm Road 3117 six miles east of Temple in eastern Bell County) ride to the picturesque town of Oscar and the country side is beautiful. Talk about stepping back into time. You drive up to this weathered looking building with a old sign that looks like it it's just hanging on with barbed wire and a prayer ( don't get me wrong I know it's all safe and sturdy-it's just the rustic aesthetics of the place, and I live it) that reads: OSCAR STORE in faded letters. The original Oscar Store was built in 1934 and run by Rudy and Grace Schiller. In 2005, the building was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. At that time Thomas Maddux rebuilt and reopened Oscar Store in 2009 and has created a unique and thriving restaurant for locals and tourists. Let's chat about the food, shall we? Friends, if you like big portions of true down-home southern cooking......no, correction "cook'n", then trust me you have come to the right place. Fried Pickles Fried Mushrooms Fried Okra French Fries Fried Catfish Fried Pork Loin Fried Squash Fried Jalapeños Fried Poppers Chili Cheese Fries Onion Rings Chicken Fried Streak Ham Steak Green Beans Corn on the Cob Sweet Potatoes Mashed Potatoes.......Dear Lord I am in Grease Heaven! We tried this place after it was recommended by a friend. It was a bit of a drive but definitely worth it! We were excited that the fish was fried in cornmeal (making it gluten free)! It was fresh and hot and crispy and perfect. The okra was fried to perfection and the coleslaw was amazing! Other than the restrooms being outside, the place was perfect! read more

Amazing. Went on a trip out to Dallas and found this on our way back home. Was a little skeptical taking the 8mile detour from I-35 but am so happy we did. The fried mushrooms were so good. The fried pickles were all crunchy and also really good. The steak was cooked to perfection. Husband had a medium rare ribeye and I ordered the chicken fried steak. It's worth the detour, it's worth a trip and we plan on taking the in laws when they come to visit. The wait staff was so friendly, even the clientele made the place a uniquely friendly experience that just happened to have outstanding food. read more

Made a 45 minute drive to this restaurant and have to say it was very worth the drive! We really didn't know what we was going to get ourselves into driving out there but beautiful area. The outside is very charming. Plenty of parking in front. The service was great and the establishment. Corn nuggets were awesome!!! the pepper popper and fried okra. Every protein that we ordered was juicy and cooked to perfection. Definitely will return if I return to Texas. read more

This is a bit out in the country but everything they serve is delicious. The best in Bell County for old fashioned Southern cooking. The fried mushrooms were great, not greasy. We had chicken fried steak and the Thomas burger. Both were excellent. read more

The steak at Oscar store is hit or miss. First steak we had there was delicious cooked just right. The 2nd time my wife ordered the steak and she said it was so tough so couldn't chew it. It was so bad she tried to send it back but they refused to take it or even take it off our bill. I stick with the hamburgers, they are very good. The onion rings are also worth a try. The 3 stars is for the steak, you should have taken it ba Back to Oscar Store for lunch. This time I had the chicken fried steak with mashed potato's and a salad. The CFS was perfectly cooked and topped with a generous amount of cream gravy. I really enjoyed my meal and I should up another star. Only thing is, I was burping up chicken fried steak from Temple to Houston and had hart burn so bad I had to carpet bomb it with rolaids and a big swig of pepto bismol. I think I'll have a cheeseburger and onion rings the next time I go.MMM Update: I'm raising their rate to 5 stars for the delicious chicken fried steak! read more

This place is off the beaten path but well worth the ride down that back country road. It's even more fun on the motorcycle!!! I ordered the cheeseburger with fries and a sweet tea. The burger rocks! The staff were all friendly my hostess was outstanding! I'll be making more rides that way in the future count on it! read more

We were staying in Temple but didn't want the old standard chain restaurants for dinner so we looked for one of those quaint Mom and Pop joints that always serves great food and friendly, down-home atmosphere. Boy did we find a great one! Out of town but not too far out! The Oscar Store was perfect! From the friendly greeting and personable service from our waitress to the food and prices we were well pleased. My wife had the chicken fried steak and, believe it or not, I had my tastebuds set for catfish but subbed for liver and onions. Everything was spot on! (We had heard that the fried catfish might be a bit skimpy and I was hungry so I went for the liver.) As we left we met the cashier who happened to be the owner and we had the kind of conversation that makes you feel like you've known each other forever. The place is just what you would expect and tiny country town to have for their bright spot in the area. Rustic and country decor, clean and well appointed with plenty of space to not feel congested. Y'all need to try this one if you're anywhere near Temple/Belton. read more

Horrible steak, I mean absolutely horrible. I hate that I hated it so much as I've always wanted to try this place out. I'm not sure if they were just super busy, which the place was packed so maybe that's why our entire order was bad. My wife got the cheese burger, And I got the ribeye . The waitress told me their ribeyes were some of the best. It was completely flavorless. My wife's cheeseburger patty also lacked any seasoning whatsoever. The waitress asked me about the streak,I let he know it wasn't good. I didn't say anything about how bad the food was at check out which I probably should have. I honestly don't think we will be back. read more

Been here twice so far for the chicken fried steak sandwich which seems hard to find nowadays. This thing was huge! Only con for me was it could've used a little salt but with S&P shakers on the table, not knocking any stars off for that. I took my wife the second time, and she had the catfish and absolutely loved it, even asking if we could go again the next day. Atmosphere is little hole in the wall hidden in the countryside, looks like an old country store inside and out with antique appliances on the porch decorated with flowers . Service was outstanding, Sidney was our server and she was very attentive to our needs. AND this place is only about 15 minutes from our home, so a great place for a quick getaway and meal. We'll definitely be going back! read more

We LOVE Oscar Store! We live an hour away and make the drive just for the food! We always have something different and have never had a bad meal. There's fried and healthier options available. I recommend chopped steak, chicken fried steak, catfish, onion rings, fried mushrooms, and salads. read more

History

Established in 2009.

Oscar Store re-opened for business on July 3, 2009, after the original store burned down in 2005. Rudy and Grace Schiller owned the original Oscar Store for over 33 years. It was a well-known East Bell County Bar that was known for their turkey shoots and ice cold beer! Thomas Maddux re-built the Oscar Store as it is today. The character and charm of the store is reflected in every inch of the establishment. Materials used have been recycled from Old barns, Cotton Gins, and much more. The old farming community is reflected in the many pieces of equipment placed throughout the yard. The community of Oscar was a thriving town at one time with several Cotton Gins, Schools, Post Office and Oscar Store! The character and charm of the Oscar Store is reflected in the friendly faces you meet there.

Thomas Maddux is living a dream! He grew up learning how to cut meat in the local Grocery Store at the early age of 8 years. He attributes his restaurant knowledge and success to learning the grocery business at an early age. He is not afraid of hard work, and it shows when you see the labor it has taken build The Oscar Store and to keep it running as a very successful business. He always has a smile and doesn't know a stranger.

Oscar Store is a great destination, especially for a motorcycle ride. The drive there is beautiful, and the venue itself is huge, with a rustic, classic Texas feel. I was told they host many events, and based on the size and setup, it would make an excellent spot for outdoor music, though they mentioned they don't do much of that. The food was solid--nothing too unique, but good enough. They offer a lineup of deep-fried appetizers that you can find at many places. The beer prices were great, which is always a plus. We stuck to just appetizers today. The staff was helpful, and the place was clean, which added to the overall experience. Oscar Store has been the site of two big family events and I'm a fan! The ambiance is perfectly Texas. This is a great place to spend some time on a weekend afternoon. A band was setting up as we left this weekend. I wished we didn't have to leave because it seems like a great place to listen to some Texas music! Y'all know I love comfort food and Oscar Store is the perfect place for some good comfort food. I've had the chicken fried steak every time. It's good! And they have fried pickles! These fried pickles are slices with really good ranch. We held one big family Christmas lunch here and a 60th anniversary celebration. Each of these events involved groups of 20. There was plenty of room for everyone, something for everyone on the menu, and the staff are so friendly and accommodating! read more

I do not get the fascination with this place. The food is NOT good. All that has been done is revamp a dying business that should have been left to die. Cleared out all the trees. Blasting music till all hours during the summer. Just screwed up the peaceful country. Go somewhere else where you aren't disturbing the peace of families homes. read more
