I never leave Yelp reviews, but I feel compelled to do so after my visit to Oso Salon with Stephanie. I had been to Oso once before and had a positive experience - Stephanie highlighted my hair before my wedding, and I was happy with the outcome, so I made an appointment a couple months later for a touch-up before my sister's wedding. On my second visit, I had a completely different experience and left very unsatisfied with the results. Stephanie seemed distracted during the appointment and the results were terrible. The color was very streaky, overly bright in certain places, and the highlights didn't even go all the way to the roots. I was obviously very unhappy with my hair, and had to make an emergency appointment at another salon a few days later to fix the coloring. I reached out to Stephanie twice to ask for a refund for my appointment since I had to spend additional time/money fixing the damage, but never heard back. I'd caution anyone from visiting - clearly very hit or miss. read more

LOVE NICOLE!!! I found her for the first time years ago at Vidal Sassoon and had her chop off my long hair into a beautiful creative bob. Then a second time was on a visit to SF while living in HI (she was at a different salon then, but I was able to find track her down). I've basically told myself that I will see her every time I come to visit. Now I live in SF, after a unsatisfying cut from three weeks back (at another salon), I decided I need to track her down once again, and I did, I could not been more than happy, she did a wonderful job and although I haven't seen her in a couple of years, it was like seeing an old friend agagin. These two are serious hair professionals who really know what they're doing. That said, they're also incredibly sweet and cool. I'm so glad to see them doing so well! My hair has never looked as good as it has the last few times I've gotten it done here (cut and/or color). Stephanie in particular seems to have a cult of worshippers for what she can do with color. On me, she did some extremely excellent golden blonde highlights with a really unique and cute strawberry/pink mixed in. Subtle but beautiful, I was really happy and I waited an astounding 4 months (yes, MONTHS) before seeing her again. (Yes, I'm partially just lazy, but it honestly did look good for most of that time.) I consider Nicole a friend now and I have to say she kicks ass with cuts and styling. She just really seems to have a feel for hair, the way it will fall and how best to approach cutting it. She also works fast! Again, I was really happy with the way my hair looked as it grew out and I was able to wait several months (I have a short-ish A-line cut) before seeing her again. KAREN!! Best hairstylist in the world. Trust me. I have natural curly hair that I sometimes want to wear straight and sometimes curly. I need a cut that can do both. In the past I have always gotten a cut that looks good blown out, but when worn curly I can give a Christmas tree a run for its money. Meet Karen. Karen came into my life 4 years ago and I have never looked back. I had grown all too familiar with a stylist asking me what I want and then doing some version of what they wanted, always with the reply that my natural curly hair couldn't do that, would look better like this, my face shape was more suited towards this....or that... Karen LISTENS to what I want. She pays attention to what my hair looked like when I came in, asks me to show her where I part, how often I wear it up, pays attention to all the little details that make the difference between whether my hair looks good all the time, or whether it just looks good the day the stylist styled it. That said, Karen is not afraid to tell me when it's time I push my look forward a bit. Looking back at pictures pre Karen, I really do wish someone had said something. That was a mullet, people! A damn mullet. An anonymous email would have been nice. Anyway, she keeps me current but still makes sure it's a cut I am going to love and that is realistic for me to style everyday. I met Karrie at Vidal Sassoon many many years ago. I learned that she is not ONLY the best hairstylist, but she is ALSO a magnificent ARTIST! My hair has gone from brunette to blonde and it has also been 'highlighted' in recent years. My hair texture is probably a challenge to most hairstylists, but Karrie has taken on to the challenge with such ease and she has consistently created an incredible beautiful hairstyle! I have had my hair styled in Nice, France several times over the years when I used to travel. I later had a french hairstylist in S.F. and I almost thought that I could not find another hairstylist who could outperform the french hairstyle. But, I truly recognize that I was proven wrong - Karrie not only DESIGNS my 'newly highlighted' 'hair into a magnificent and artistic short hairstyle, but she does it with impeccable taste. This review is long overdue. I hate having to give one star ratings, especially when it's directed at someone specific, but I really feel that this needs to be said. I came hear a few months ago because I bought a living social deal for a balayage with Mena Mead. This was my second time getting one of these "deals" and this second experience was severely disappointing. Well, my hair looked completely jacked up. Terrible. Just reference the 3 attached pictures. The lines were so harsh and yes, it literally looked like a line going straight across the back of my head in real life. After Karen finished styling my hair, I saw the sides of my head, which looked okay, so no complaints. Only hours after I left the salon did I get to see the BACK of my head and the layers underneath, which she didn't even bother to show me. Perhaps she didn't do it on purpose because she knew I would NOT have paid for that. But to be fair, the color wasn't brassy like it appears in the pictures, but the placement and harsh lines are spot on. Now I do admit that I should have asked to see the back before I left, but honestly, even if I did it wouldn't have changed anything. I still would have forced a smile, gave a fair tip, and left, never to return. I would NOT have trusted her to touch my hair again after that. It was very clear she did not have the skills, knowledge, or experience to do what she intended. Would you give the person who just butchered your hair a second chance to make it even worse? That same day, I contacted my regular stylist to try and set up an appointment. I was told I had to wait 4 weeks, so I just texted him pictures of my hair. He ended up feeling sympathetic, so he squeezed me in two weeks out. I ended up wearing my hair up during those two weeks until I got to fix it. Oh, and it wasn't just the top layers. I also tried to clip part of it up and style it in a million different ways, but the layers underneath were even WORSE if you can believe it. Another line just going straight across my head. Even when I curled it to try and hide the harsh lines, it was still noticeable. The staff was nice, but I can't believe what they did to my hair. Wasted $100+ and a few hours of my life for a bad dye job. This is why you don't do "deals." Never again. read more

I have actually never been compelled to write a review about a person that cut my hair, but Nicole does an amazing job. I have never had a haircut I would complain about, I am of the philosophy that it grows out. I've been to Nicole twice now and she is wonderful. The first time I asked for what I always ask for, a trim and some side-sweepy bangs. The cut was great and exactly what I wanted since I was trying to grow my hair out pretty long. This second time I brought in a photo because I was looking for something a little different - a long-ish bob that wasn't too asymmetrical because I'm not Ms. Trendsetter, and she gave me just what I asked for. I have received many compliments on the cut, and I finally have hair that I want to style in the morning instead of just throwing it into a ponytail! I love this place and Nicole! read more

I am PICKY and have been seeing the same stylist in Marin at Cooper Alley for 10 years . My hair is long and layered and a good cut that grows out well is very important cause I only get it cut once every 8 weeks. However, my long-term stylist's prices kept on increasing it was costing me minimum $225 for a haircut. ENOUGH! I tried various other stylists that were recommended by yelp and friends , trying to find someone really great but not so expensive, but no "perfect" cut from anyone I saw. Meantime, I've been seeing Stephanie for my highlights for 10 years as well. I mentioned to her I was about DONE with the $225 cuts, and she said "hey, you should try my new partner. She's awesome".
