I have been here only a few times for breakfast, once was when they had a breakfast buffet (no buffet anymore). Both of the other times I had biscuits and sausage gravy which were really good both times. Wait staff was prompt and courteous. Some others in our group had pancakes and eggs which they said were good. Place had a good atmosphere, was a little bit loud but that's how it is just about any restaurant you go to these days. Prices are reasonable. Can't rate at 3.5 stars, so I went with 4 starts. We will go back if we are in town again. read more

Out doing house hunting and found ourselves not far from Bandara and so here we are, first time for my hubby but my daughter, our granddaughter, and I have been here before. Daughter and I both had the small chicken fried steak which was huge and we could have shared. Hubby got the small ribeye which he was very happy with. Granddaughter got the enchilada and salad bar..fresh biscuits right out of the oven were also so good. We brought enough home for another meal but still regretted not getting a dessert. Everything tasted excellent and the waitress was super nice. Pretty reasonable prices. We are picky Yelpers and we were happy here. Update: I'm downgrading from five stars to four stars. Dinner last night was great. However, we had breakfast here too this morning. It was fine but not as good as we'd hoped. The pancakes were overly sweet and a bit doughy without much flavor, but some people might be happy with them. The grits were a bit underdone. However, I did enjoy my omelette and the biscuit was good. The lunch buffet with Frito pie that my husband had instead of breakfast had almost no animal products at all. Very little if any meat in the Frito pie. So it is maybe good for vegetarians, but not good for us, since we like some meat in our meals. Good iced tea though. For the record, our dinner that we enjoyed the previous night consisted of the Swiss mushroom burger, chicken tenders with baked potato, and the taco salad. First, the good part. OST is where the LOCALS go for BREAKFAST. They open early and you will be treated to a parade of characters right out of the old west. Sit down at a group table and soak in the cool 50's atmosphere while chowing down on some good old fashioned breakfast fare - homemade biscuits and gravy, Belgian waffles, eggs and perfect bacon! Sit long after finishing and catch up on the local gossip with a bottomless cup a joe. Here's the not so good part. I've also had both lunch and dinner here and the food was awful. I don't know how the place made such a transition except that the good cooks must be taking off after the breakfast crowd leaves. read more

Very cool place to bring visitors as this place is a sight! Sit in the 'John Wayne' room for all things related to the actor. Or if you're feeling adventurous, have a seat at the saddle bar. It always seems like it's hard to find just a plain old hamburger steak. I found one here. It was sooo good topped with grilled onions, mushrooms, and green peppers. Baked potato, trip to salad bar. Definitely would go again. Parking a little tricky. read more

Went to eat here since we live in Boerne. Love coming here. Nice little drive. My husband and I sit down and our waitress is very well... a little too into herself. Her name was Jordan. Her long hair was in a ponytail but it still was hanging over her shoulder! So gross. She was flirting with my husband. Just looking at him the WHOLE TIME. She was very stuck up towards me. Like I did something to her. When we go out to eat I don't want our waitress to sit there and talk about how she is a single mother. I don't care about your life. Might work on some single men but not my husband and myself! She tried to act like she was this super intellectual person. Again I'm like stop talking... go give a sob story about your life with a different table we JUST want to eat! I just felt like she was trying to put me down the whole time and rub in my face how much better she is then EVERYONE. The food was amazing. We go to pay and then we meet Shirley. I've read reviews about this woman being racist. We are Mexican. So not going to lie we were timid about going up there. We get up there and she points her finger in our face and said hold on I'm HUNGRY. She hasn't had anything since she has been here. She takes a couple bites of her food and starts talking to a couple men sitting at a table near by WHILE WE ARE STILL STANDING TO PAY. She was very rude. We complained about our waitress and what does she say... well jordan is our best waitress what did you do to piss her off???? Really? We have had a lot better service here before! She cared more about herself and flirting with my husband then taking care of us! Management needs help and so do these girls who work at night. Again food was great. Update! We did go back and we had Katie wait on us. What a doll. Very cute and smart. Different cashier at night, thankfully. Food was still amazing. read more

I am concerned that almost everyone working there was also eating while they waited on tables. They are super nice, appear to work hard, and are efficient but they aren't washing up between eating their own sandwich and bringing you yours! The food is always really good but the obvious eating while working makes me think they aren't given breaks. read more

Old Santa Fe Trail or OST is a settled rustic restaurant where the locals an out-of-towners alike become regulars. Bike clubs make their stops here, and fast service pushes everyone through quickly so the waits are never too long. The food is pretty good on the whole (my favorite breakfast is the eggs enchiladas which I rate highly). They have daily lunch specials which are buffet style on a chuck wagon that enhances the experience of the old West. John Wayne photos line the walls, and the employees are always friendly and helpful. You don't have to wait for your coffee if they're busy ... Grab a cup and give yourself a fill while you wait a couple of minutes for your server. Women's restroom always clean and has pic's of hot dudes in the stalls. It's kick back ... kid friendly ... and you can hitch your horse out front if you have a mind to ride your horse to town. read more

I've worked in the restaurant business for 15 years and rarely write reviews, but when I spend over an hour in a business without so much as a smile from anyone I feel compelled to speak up. The food is decent, but the waitress was less than enthused to serve us-not rude just not happy. I can deal with that, but when we were paying the bill, the woman who cashed us out was extremely rude. When my 3 year old acted rambunctiously at check out the woman actually snapped, "seriously?!?!" Apparently children are not welcome here. I understand that this is mainly an older community, but do I really deserve to be treated poorly just because I happen to have young children? I won't be back, which I'm sure suits them just fine. read more

Old Spanish Trail, or Old Saggy T*ts as we called it on the school bus, has great, delicious, wonderful, amazing food. I miss it so.

The place is an institution for folks who live around the area and those who are just popping into visit. The things to eat are the enchiladas and the chicken fried steak. It's pure Texas on a plate. The prices are reasonable and the service is always decent. read more

We stopped here for lunch on Easter Sunday on our way back home from Hill Country riding. It was just okay. I ordered a chicken fried steak and it was pretty crispy and dry, the gravy was lumpy, and the french fries were a little underdone. The BEST Chicken fried steak ever, and I'm a FOODIE I've tried lots and lots of chicken fried steaks from many different restaurants. Nothing beats the duke chicken fried steak here. its a REAL Steak not some chopped beef crap like at chili's or luby's. and the price isn't bad either for 12.95 you get a huge steak! and the gravy is not lumpy like that girl below me said, its sooo thick and so creamy and smooth, yum!!! the fries kinda sucked but the mashed potatoes were just as amazing as the steak. 5 big large stars for this dish, i can't attest for the other dishes but the salad was good too. read more

Dining with the Duke means family-restaurant fare, complete with all-day breakfast, home-style items like country-fried steak, and even a smattering of Tex-Mex items served on lovely metallic plates. The Tex-Mex comes with a weak salsa, and your grandma's favorites earn you a trip to the covered-wagon salad bar, the highlight of which may be those imitation bacon bits. The desserts are a full assortment of old-time cobblers and pies, of which I recommend the buttermilk. Despite the over-the-top decor, it does seem that they have a good mix of regulars and out-of-towners, both of whom know a good, hearty meal when they see one. Food was okay. My husband and I had the chicken fried steak. The portions were huge and we could not finish it. We were better off sharing a plate. What makes me love this place is their pie. I had some type of custard pie and it was sooo good!!! It was made from scratch and what made it super yummy was their crust. This place is practically famous. If you are in the Bandera area you can stop here for breakfast, lunch or dinner and you will get an awesome meal!! Their chicken fried steak is really good! Spent many a time in this place. The food is pretty good. They got a mean chicken fried steak. There's a big salad bar in here. Good tourist spot. You can sit at the counter on stools that are actually saddles. The atmosphere is fantastic. Old west style with logs on the walls. Prices are decent. The staff is always very friendly. My husband and I with our baby granddaughter in a stroller stopped in for lunch. Staff was very accommodating selecting a table away from high traffic. The food came-out quickly and was so delicious we shared the very large 8oz hamburger with chili, cheese, jalapeños with the usual lettuce, tomato and onions.
