It is rumored that former Buffalo sports GMs Tim Murray and Doug Whaley used to commiserate at this somewhat upscale downtown Buffalo eatery. Unlike their regimes at the helm of the Sabres and Bills, the food at Osteria is far from mediocre. Having not actually dined here "in-person" for more than a year, yesterday saw my first Osteria take-out experience and it did not disappoint. Utilizing money on a couple of 716 eGift Cards (check this awesome program out if you read this review in the next few days!), my wife and I were able to load up on Italian takeout goodness. We ordered eggplant parm, chicken parm, focaccia, and risotto bites. Given that the two entrees came with spaghetti on the side, this proved to be a hefty portion of food for only two people. But who doesn't love Italian leftovers?! All of the food was of a high quality for takeout. While of course not quite as savory or perfect as I recalled while dining their in-person, it still made for a very nice Friday night meal at home. We look forward to visiting Osteria again in person in the not-so-distant future! read more

I traveled here on business and was searching for a local establishment near my hotel, where you felt connected and welcomed. I immediately felt that when walked in to this place around 6pm, the bar was packed with no obvious place to sit. I was traveling on business, so I decided to try and find a spot at the bar as I was treveling alone. That's when I met Carmen, the bartender. She immediately approached me and made a space at the end of the bar where the server station typically is. Carmen is experienced, knows her patrons and managed everyone's needs at the while taking the time to suggest a meal choice for myself. On a positive note, the owner came out and socialized with the patrons as they all should do. I felt very comfortable and the meal was prepared with care and tasted wonderful. Paris is split into 4 compass-oriented districts, known as areas (eria in French). There is the Nord-eria (North), the Sud-eria (South), the Ouest-eria (West), and of course the Italian quarter, better known as the Ost-eria (East). There is also the Mexican zone, known as the Taqu-eria, and the Buffalonian zone, known as the Wing-eria. This place is run by French people (hence it's kind of fancy) who are from the Ost-eria, so they named the place after their home neighborhood in Paris. The number "166" refers to the number of customers that the owner has managed to seduce since going into business (pretty impressive/appalling depending on your point of view). It has nothing to do with the fact that this place is at 166 Franklin. Much like Franklin is absolutely not named after Benjamin. What to get: Meatball. This place is slightly out of my price range and a little out of my comfort zone too. I just never enjoyed dining at the fancier places. Ironically this place is what most fancy people and fancy-place-connoisseurs would describe as "casual". For me, this place is just a little bit above my fancy cut off line. Maybe if and when I have large amounts of disposable income... but definitely not now. With that in mind, I didn't really stick around... I was delighted to notice that the oft-lauded meatball is only $4, and gleefully ordered it to go. I was very impressed by the size and the fact that it came slathered in cheese and delicious homemade tomato sauce, so for $4 it was actually a pretty decent sized snack, which I shared with a friend and was still able to save half of it for later. At $4, I really don't care how fancy or pricey a place is, if something so delicious is $4 then you've won me over. I only rate based on the deliciousness of the food, and while this meatball wasn't as magnificent as the best meatball I've ever had, just down the road over the Skyway at Mulberry in Lackawanna... it was a very very good meatball... juicy, flavourful, large, and the perfect texture and taste to totally rock my meatballs. Special thanks to Lindsay for the recommendation in her review that sealed the deal and led me to try this. I'm very glad I did. As I said, the sauce and the cheese on it complemented it perfectly, and so based ONLY on the meatball (which I was told is the best thing at the place!), I'm giving Osteria a 5. However bear in mind that I've never sampled the rest of the menu, nor have I done what is the "done" thing, and sat down and had a proper meal here. And with prices like this, I probably won't be doing so anytime soon. My meals tend to be $10 and under unless I'm sharing ;) This place was the 5th place on my "crazy Monday evening food tour" which consisted of some WOW places (Spice Bazaar, Kalypso), some very good places (Kung Food, Osteria), some places I didn't order from (Guercio's stop making sandwiches at 3pm, Luca was out of blood orange sorbetto) and also Press Raw Juice Bar (delicious and expensive), Zip's Pizza on Grant (not as good as the Hertel one), and Old Pink (wasn't into it). Went here for lunch today and was very impressed with the speed (I was out in 40 minutes), the bartender (Alec), the restaurants interior and the attentiveness and friendliness of the owner. Not to mention the food -- one of the tastiest gourmet burgers I've had to date. They've done a marvelous job renovating the space with the projected fireplace in the back; very beautiful and adds an elegance to it all. I had their lunch special which was a burger with stuffed peppers. It was served on a fresh, beautiful artisan bun and cooked perfectly medium rare. I'm pretty sure the ground meat was hand-assembled from the way it looked and tasted (see photos below). Incredible! We came here on a double date last night during restaurant week. Parking was difficult, even with a paid lot in the back, it was hard to find something on a Saturday night! It was also one of the most expensive lots in buffalo - $5 for 2 hours! Or $10 for 6 hours I think. Anyway, we didn't plan on sticking around after dinner so it was fine. The hostess location was odd, you have to fight through a sea of people at the bar to get to it, although there's no sign pointing you towards it so we were a little lost at first. We were seated promptly though by a friendly hostess once we figured out where to go. The decor and atmosphere was warm and charming. We were greeted by a friendly waitress who provided us with good service throughout the night. We shared a couple bottles of Cabernet that was also a restaurant week special. Not too bad, although I know for a fact that bottle is only like $6-7 from the liquor store... So $20.14 doesn't really seem like a good deal to me. I wonder what they normally charge for it. Three of us got the restaurant week deal and 1 got a regular entree. I chose the meatball as my starter and seafood fra diavolo as the entree. The meatball was fantastic!!! Especially with the garlicky red sauce that it came with! I'm not sure what else this red sauce comes on, because the stuffed banana pepper that our friends ordered also had a red sauce on it but it wasn't the same! The seafood fra diavolo was good, fresh seafood and these long skinny spiral noodles with red sauce that had just the right amount of spiciness. Personally I like linguine with my seafood fra diavolo, but this was pretty good too. Our entree sizes were small - half the size of my fiance's entree (he was the odd one out not ordering the special) so again, I feel like the restaurant week special isn't all that special after all. My fiancé got some sausage pasta dish I can't remember the name, it came with a red/brown creamy sauce and was simply phenomenal. We would definitely order it again. The dessert was a caramel apple pie gelato, in reality it just tasted like caramel gelato, which was still good, but we tasted no apple pie flavor whatsoever. All in all, it was a great experience and the food definitely met our expectations as I have heard all sorts of wonderful things about Osteria 166. Yum!!! read more

I cannot believe I've lived in Buffalo since June 2017 yet it took me until September 2022 to venture to Osteria 166! I first sampled their food at Taste of Buffalo this past summer - I had one of their meatballs and it was FANTASTIC. I knew I had to go there for dinner sooner or later. My mom was visiting and I figured it would be a nice place to have dinner on a Saturday evening. I was able to book a reservation on OpenTable and we were all set! We walked in and first noticed that the front of the restaurant is a bar with some available seating - a nice place to grab a drink while watching the Bills! The bartender welcomed us and pointed us to the hostess since we had a reservation. Another gentleman, who I presume was a manager or the owner, welcomed us and walked us over to the hostess. The hostess was having a chit chat with one of her co-workers and the owner/manager broke up the conversation so we could get seated - very appropriate yet kind of funny! We were escorted into the main dining room which is broken up into 2 sections (perhaps one of them could be used for a private party) and most of the tables were occupied. The room was not too loud, which was a pleasant surprise. We had a small table in the back of the dining room and it was a good spot - the temperature was perfect and we could hear each other talk (rare for an Italian restaurant!). It is definitely a great dining spot for a date, going out with your family, or even for a medium-large group. Once we sat down our waitress sent over her trainee to take our drink orders - I requested a house cabernet, which was excellent. My mom and I were reviewing the cocktail menu and found it very impressive - perhaps I can try one of the drinks next time. The menu is not too extensive, though they did have specials which the waitress told us about. Sometimes that works in my favor, since I'm not overwhelmed with too many options. One thing I will mention is that bread is NOT served for free, however you can purchase a bread basket for $4, which is honestly okay with me since I often fill up on it! We first shared an order of Nani's Meatball and it was outstanding! It is certainly an order for 1 person, however 2 people can share it. The meatball was not over-seasoned (YAY) and the sauce was cooked to perfection. I wish we ordered a second one and had some bread to dip in the sauce! For the entrees, my mother requested a house salad topped with grilled salmon. I ordered the Filetto (4 oz filet mignon served with mashed potatoes, string beans, topped with a red wine demi-glace). Unfortunately, the salmon appeared to have been fried and not grilled. The salad was also served with romaine lettuce, while my mom specifically requested iceberg lettuce (or a similar lettuce). They took back the salad and switched out the lettuce; my mom decided to keep the salmon as is. We were a bit disappointed that it was difficult to wave down the waitress at times, however she did lower the price of my mother's dish out of courtesy. With regards to the Filetto, the meat was maybe slightly undercooked (I requested medium rare), however the meat still was delicious. The garlic mashed potatoes were excellent and the demi-glace was perfect. Overall, I was impressed with Osteria 166. It is an excellent dining option in Downtown Buffalo and I highly recommend it. Yes, they did make small mistakes with my mom's salad, however we still had a nice time and appreciated the waitress lowering the price. I recommend that the waiters and waitresses try to check in with the diners more frequently. I will definitely visit again soon, perhaps I'll visit the bar for one of their cocktails! read more

Last night was my first time at Osteria 166. I was accompanied by three friends to check out Restaurant Week 2014. We arrived promptly for our 7:30 reservation and had to wait just a few minutes while our table was cleared off. I have to admit, I was pretty disappointed that I couldn't use the Yelp check-in offer for a glass of house wine because apparently Restaurant Week is also an offer and you can't use more than one offer per visit. Really, one glass of wine? Okay, that's fine. Luckily the service was pretty good considering our indecisiveness and the food was delicious. I started with the stuffed banana pepper and yes - other Yelpers are correct - it was awesome! Stuffed with the perfect amount of ricotta and parmesan cheese! I then had the Pork Osso Bucco which, from their menu, is a "pork shank braised in rich stout ale with garlic, onions and herbs over parmesan risotto and braise reduction." I actually couldn't even eat it all, I was more stuffed than my Stuffed Banana Pepper! The risotto was delectable and the pork was incredibly tender. Two of my friends got the Chicken Lasagna and were disappointed with the portion size. They also weren't aware the lasagna had some mushrooms in it and weren't too pleased with that. My third friend got the Seafood Fra Diavalo, "clams, muscles, and shrimp in a spicy tomato sauce over torchietti" and was satisfied. Overall, a pretty good experience with great company. The bread came in a brown paper bag with grease stains which I was a bit surprised by and a few pieces were a little too hard but the dipping oil was very enjoyable. I was surprised to see that the pizza came uncut. I received a pair of scissors to cut it myself. Definitely something that I'm not used to but the pizza was very good! During the corona crisis Osteria is offering several specific dinners under the label "stock the freezer". We ordered 4 dinners, sharing two of them tonight. The dinners are packed in microwavable containers and are delivered frozen. As per the directions, defrost in the fridge and microwave from 3-5 minutes depending on the power of your microwave. We shared a Chicken Parmesan with spaghetti and a Lemon chicken with risotto. Both were very tasty and at $8.00, a reasonable size for a meal. One can order several sides, including focaccia, a 6 oz. meatball or soup, but we only bought the main courses. There are also family size servings, meant to feed 8-12 people, including lasagna and eggplant Parmesan The other two dinners went into our freezer. This is a great service provided by Osteria 166. Osteria is one of many temporarily closed restaurants keeping the public fed and their employees working during this time of quarantine and isolation. Thumbs up. read more

When I think of Italian food, I think of either a classy place with white table cloths or something with a family-feel type atmosphere...this place wasn't really either. It was modern, rustic, and small. The drinks were pretty good, I'll give them that. Still not something that would bring on the feel of a typical Italian restaurant though. The food: The bread they brought out before hand was alright. Just alright. They gave it to us in a brown paper bag with grease stains on it, and it just didn't really do anything for me. Had a good crust on the outside, but it really lacked flavor. They gave us some dipping oil for the bread too, but that was pretty much all it was...oil. Just really lacked a good amount of seasoning, grated cheese, & vinegar. Disappointed. I ordered some lobster bisque before the meal as I usually do when a restaurant offers this soup. It's one of my favorites when it's made well. The lobster bisque at this restaurant was not great by any means. I didn't even want to eat it and the waitress ended up just taking it off the bill. For the main entree, I had a dish that included veal and eggplant. The veal was sort of tough. So was the eggplant. The opposite of what you would expect when ordering a dish composed of these things. The sauce wasn't anything to write home about either. Needless to say, I was not impressed with the food. This used to be the place where I treated myself when I lived and worked in the city. Since I no longer live or work in the city, I come here less frequently, only twice in the past year. This evening I came with a friend who had never been. I excitedly told her about the bag of bread. Sadly, when it arrived, it was no longer the thick, soft, warm Italian bread of my memories. It was thinly sliced, not warm, and just average. They do however now offer a choice between that bread with oil or a cheesy bread with marinara. So that's something that has changed. Bummer for me though. We started with the Smoked Eggplant Parmesan for an appetizer. As soon as the plate hit the table the smoky aroma taunted us. It was really good. I love smoked food and I had never had smoked eggplant before. We were both happy with our choice. For dinner I ordered the Beet Salad with a meatball on the side. The meatball was listed under the category of sides. This is important to note because it came served on top of my salad; to the right side but on top of the salad. I was annoyed with this because I don't want sauce mixed in with greens that are dressed with a citrus dressing. I think it was a manager who came over to bring something to my friend and I mentioned this to her because it seemed so bizarre. She informed me that Italians like to do that and often order it that way. Now, I'm Italian, but my family was Sunday Sauce Italian, not "Gravy" Italian, so I recognize there are variations in custom. But on a salad dressed with citrus? Come on. She goes on to tell me that at their Ellicottville location they actually have a meatball salad on their menu. Now I'm looking for the hidden camera. She offers to make me a new salad but I decline. The salad was in fact, really good once you removed the small portion that was covered in sauce. In addition to beets and the citrus dressing it contained Mandarin oranges and goat cheese which was all just wonderful together. For dessert we shared a tiramisu and I really enjoyed that as well. Our server was great. But when I got home it was haunting me. You see, this was the second time now that something weird happened with the meatballs here. The last time I dined at Osteria 166 was with a date. He and I each ordered our own plates and a meatball on the side. When the dinner came out, both meatballs were on the same plate. We both looked at the plate, then each other. Do we reach across the table to eat off the same plate? Neither of our dinner plates had room for a meatball. I asked the server for side plates just as she was about to step away from the table. She offered us back our dirty plates from our appetizers. Um, OK. Is there a shortage of side plates? I'm picturing being asked to cup my hands together as a meatball is gently ladled into them. Is this the future? Why do I have to specify that I would like my side of meatball(s) on the actual side? Wouldn't that be a better way to error? I mean, if you give it to me on the side and I want it on top of my dish, I can put it there. And that brought me back to this "meatball salad" thing. So I googled it. Everything seemed to suggest this was a new thing that people are doing, probably part of the carb-free craze, who knows. But I did not find anything about this being an ole Italian custom. If anyone can tell me a tale of their Nonna's Meatball Salad recipe that has been handed down for generations, please private message me. read more

I have finally made it to Osteria 166! On the night of the Roger Waters show, and Music is Art festival, we couldn't be seated right at our 7pm reservation. So the hostess offered to get us a drink from the bar right away which was cool because the bar was packed too. We were seated in the main dining area which was very nice. No pretentious vibe going on. It was a fun atmosphere. All of the servers were literally speed walking delivering drinks, food, serving their tables it was pretty crazy and they did a great job. My only negative feedback for this review is it was LOUD which made having a conversation difficult, only adding to the overall decibel level. Maybe some acoustic absorbing material on the ceiling could help with that. We started with Arancini, Buffalo Calamari, and a Ceasar salad. The salad was a Romain heart, cut in half, slightly grilled for a slight smoke flavor. Not over dressed and elegant. Two little anchovies off to the side in the event you like this necessity for the salad. My wife don't like them, so down my hatch they went! The Buffalo Calamari were super tender, laying on a bed of spring salad. The welcomed taste of Frank's Red hot was perfectly balanced. The two Arancini were a little smaller than a tennis ball which is pretty big. The crunchy exterior protecting the slightly creamy risotto interior was blanketed by an aeoli of some sort. All starters were very delicious. Our mains were off the specials list. Mine was a rib eye steak with garlic mashed potatoes and these fried jalapenos stuffed with cheese. My steak was cooked to a perfect mid rare. It was a little salt heavy on the rub, which I don't mind. For it's price point, it was a pretty small cut, but it was delicious. My wife had the lobster and shrimp dish over risotto. She said that the seafood was perfectly cooked, and the risotto slightly spicy. Very good dish. This place is another one of the Buffalo gems that I have driven by a thousand times and never thought to stop in. I'm very glad I did! We made our reservation the day before, showed up 5 minutes early and walked right in and were seated right away on a busy Friday night. Got a great price on a bottle of red wine and absolutely loved the stuffed pepper risotto sticks! Highly suggest. The margarita pizza was not what I imagined but still brought a nice taste to dinner. I will probably try a different pizza the next time I head there. Chocolate tower cake was absolutely amazing and it took everything in my power to not try and finish it at the table instead of bringing home leftovers! Food might be good but unless you have a three hours for lunch, don't go there. Positive note Excellent water ..... never got my real drink. It's not there fault that people don't want to work , but management needs to let customers know there would be more then a 1hr wait. read more

Had dinner last night in the bar area. There was live music for happy hour which was why we came. Tried the pizzas and stuffed pepper which was great. Had a couple bottles of wine which we enjoyed. Super friendly owner who actually ended up treating us to desert when he heard it was our first date night since we had kids. I would definitely return and recommend! read more
