My personal opinion was that the food was just way too salty. It was too bad because the flavors were there, but just couldn't finish it without downing lots of water. Their cocktails were pretty good. The service was mediocre, and we went early evening when the restaurant opened and it was not busy and seemed like it was a hot spot for locals to sit at the bar and chit chat with the bartender and order some dinner for the day. Amazing dinner! The seating is a bit too tight and the decor, restrooms, etc are not the most up kept. But wow, the food and service were top notch. If this restaurant was downtown it would have easily cost two to three times as much. Came here with some family members the other day. Heard very good things about this place. It's got good ambiance, seems very romantic so a good date spot. The lights are dim, the space is small to medium size. The service is pretty good, they refilled my water consistently. The busser came by and filled our waters. Our waiter was encouraging and dished the exact type of service you would expect from a small-plate Italian restaurant. We were recommended to start with the Polipo ($17, taste of grilled octopus complimented with a few pork belly bits, potato puree, and potato gaufrettes). Popular appetizer. Glad we ordered it because it's not everyday I eat octopus. I was told at Langhe Market that the Plin was the restaurant's signature dish. Our server pushed that the dish was small plate AND I wish I would have listened to him. The Plin ($16, hand pinched tiny ravioli with cheese, thyme, and butter sauce) is the real deal here, but best experienced as an appetizer due to size. This plate will let you overindulge in a rich, creamy, buttery iconic plate. I'm glad I ordered it because it was satisfying in taste, but I get the hint that any plate will be delicious here. I will try something new, next time. My husband ordered the unlimited plate ragu for $19, which was a step up from your typical homemade ragu. It had a nice flavor in the sauce, the northern meat was a little dry, and was a definite bonus for being bottomless. Their pastas are must-try's here -- it's what they are known for. I tried all three pasta dishes on the menu, and they all didn't disappoint. I really enjoyed the Burro E Salvia and Plin the most -- I typically favor a light, cheesy, buttery pasta. My boyfriend loved the Ragu, although I thought the noodles were a little too soft and would be best with a thicker noodle. But the flavor was there. Service was great also. All in all, pasta dishes were good but their sister restaurant , Testaccio blows this place out of the water -- their pastas are soooo flavorful and noodles are cooked to perfection. The food was good - we got the plin / ravioli and their daily risotto, which had mushrooms, truffle something, and a sunny side egg. I had seen photos of how small the plin serving was on Yelp, but heard really good things, and my mom still wanted to get it. It was good, but definitely a tiny serving, and a little too cheesy for both our tastes. Good, but not great. I love risotto, and this one was no exception. It was good risotto, but I've had better and great risotto for less than $33. All in all, the pasta was good pasta but I wouldn't go back to get those dishes again. The rest of their menu was intriguing though, and the food and service was good enough that I'd go again if I was feeling fancy and in the mood for bougie pasta. Although given the list of other great pasta places in the city, it's more likely I'll check another one out before I give Osteria Langhe another shot. We also got the octopus antipasti to share, and that was good. Their sauce was really good, and the vegetables in that dish were excellent. My wife and I dined here last night to celebrate an early anniversary. It's been a few years since we've been back, I think when we first opened. The occasion and ambiance still had that same stylish and comfortable Italian Osteria vibe we miss from our trip to Italy. Since it was 80 degrees in early October, we definitely took advantage of the outdoor seating. What's nice is that their tables and chairs aren't wobbly at all. Despite being outdoors too, their wait staff took great care of us, swapped out our flatwear and utensils for every dish, and kept our water glasses full. I felt the passion like I was back in Venice (I know this place is Piedtmontese, just let me have it). Our waitress was great with recommendations and balance attentiveness with a relaxed pace. Bonus for Monday, it was Happy Hour/Night and they had a bunch of cocktails for $5. Nice! My wife tried a couple and really enjoyed the Oaxaca Negroni. We started with the Nostri Bagna Cauda, with nicely grilled asparagus and polenta. The sauce was the focal point, a tangy, anchovy powered, garlic laced joy juice. Seriously, we lapped this up. The asparagus was cooked perfectly and the polenta was some of the smoothest and creamiest I've ever had. You will notice a theme here, their sauces and carbs are on point, consistently great throughout the meal. Plin. Everyone should order the Plin. The cheese, butter thyme sauce, and the pasta make music on my palette. I think it was a tad salty for my wife but we still destroyed this. The pasta has that great al dente chew, and the la tur cheese beckons you to devour more. We also found out we could buy these to take home. Can we rent the Cook to prep it for us? Next up was the rabbit saddle wrapped in prosciutto, with pork belly and more polenta. Again, the delicate sauce helped focus on the meat, and the polenta was extra creamy. I would say the rabbit saddle was a tad dry though. Pork belly was well prepared with a nice crisp exterior and melt in your mouth fat layers. I was a little disappointed with the rabbit to be honest. So, I was still a little hungry, and we noticed everyone around us ordered risotto, so we inquired on that. Osteria Langhe featured a black truffle rissoto. Omg. So good. There was also corn in it to give it some crunch texture, but the creamyness and the generous amounts of truffle were amazing. I forgot to take a picture because it smelled so good. We were stuffed by this point, dessert was purely a taste bud exercise at this point. We read the menu, and give in to a smooth hazelnut torta. Not too sweet, dense, with raspberries and blueberries giving it a fresh accent. The mint was a nice touch. Delicious food and cozy atmosphere! We snagged a seat by the large windows in front, and it was bright and quiet. We split three dishes that were well-coursed. We started with the octopus appetizer which was tasty and came with an amazing sauce. Then we shared an order of the ragu and plin. I know I'm going against the grain here, but I wasn't a huge fan of the plin. I definitely see how people would love it, but it was very parm heavy which isn't my favorite type of cheese. The star of my show was the ragu however, with a sauce so rich and authentic that it brought back fond memories of Italy trips and home cooking. The other dishes I sampled, (risotto and duck) were also phenomenal. The atmosphere is intimate and charming and our server was friendly. The not-so-good: Service, while friendly, was fairly slow. After placing our orders the food came out between lengthy periods of waiting. The waiter warned us of this, but it was still a little surprising to have to wait as long as we did. I simply couldn't say better things about this restaurant if I tried. The beef tartare was one of, if not the best I've ever had. The ravioli were packed full of flavor. Don't expect a soft flavor with that one, but it was excellent nonetheless. We also had the chicken which was so well cooked that it had us floored. I never knew pillows of love could be made like this CONIGLIO - prosciutto wrapped rabbit loin, pork belly, mushrooms, creamy polenta. I haven't seen a lot of rabbit dishes in Chicago and it's one of my favorite things to eat (nice and juicy, not too tough, with great flavored meat. The prosciutto and pork belly gave it a nice salty & crispy outside . The mushrooms in the middle were incredible PESCE- pan seared salmon, lentils, sweet & sour peppers, brown butter. Nice and crispy on the top, juicy in the middle. Perfectly ARANCINI - rice pudding (fried),pastry cream, berries. What's not to love? Nice and crispy on the outside and soft, flavorful in the inside. If you love rice pudding you'd LOVE this PANNA COTTA - so good. Nice and jiggly as you see. It's incredibly smooth and nicely balanced with creamy pistachio paste. This meal was delicious! Came with a group on a Wednesday night, we had a table right by the window so it was a bit chilly but not too bad. Some of us split a bottle of wine (the Langhe Sorriso), which was delicious, and other got cocktails or wine too. We split the Due Carne and the Polpio, both of which were excellent (I didn't think I'd like the beans that came with the Polipo, but they were so flavorful!). For my entree I got the daily risotto, which was a shrimp risotto with black truffle and an egg on top. It was sooooooo good! I think I only tasted one shrimp in the entire dish, which was a little odd, but the truffle and the egg made the risotto so decadent. Risotto can get kind of dense, but even with the egg it wasn't too bad. The rabbit, which some friends got, was also delicious, as was the Ragu one of our other friends got. There wasn't bad food during the whole meal. The Panna Cotta some of us split was delicious as well; a different texture than I'm used to, this was a bit thinner than some, but the flavor was still good. Some minor downsides: this place is expensive. We had one friend pay and we'll pay her back, so I'm not 100% sure what the damage is yet but I'm expecting a pretty big ouch. Service was a little on the slow side-our server warned us at the beginning some of the dishes take a while, but even when we were first ordering wine and appetizers, etc. it seemed a little too spaced out. And the women's restroom is one stall; a minor annoyance but when there's a line that's not the most fun. Last night, I had my casual birthday dinner with my buddy at Osteria Langhe. Tuesdays are a great day to go because they do a 3 course meal for $38. This thing is HUGE. We actually split one of the three course meals & added one extra appetizer, and left absolutely stuffed. Service was just amazing throughout our entire meal from the hostess squeezing us in at a busy time to our friendly, well informed server that had great timing checking on us, but was never intrusive. To start our meal, we had the Gnocchi and Burro e Salvia. The special gnocchi of the night was bacon and it was just oozing with delicious porky flavor. I was dying for a white sauce pasta and the Burro e Salvia fit the bill! The buttery sauce was over house made spaghetti noodles with everything going together so well. Our main dish was the Maiale which is apparently a smoked sausage, but also had a huge portion of suckling porchetta, cracklings, and crispy potatoes. Every element of this dish was just delicious - the pork perfectly done, the potatoes so crisp on the outside! It all went together incredibly well and I savored every bite that hit my mouth. Dessert was interesting and probably the least exciting bit of dinner, but still good. We had ordered Smores fritters but upon first bite, knew we were eating something else. Our server came over a few moments later and apologized that the menu item had changed and it was now Green Tea fritters. They were still good, coming with a fruit sauce for dipping, but the brain got way confused expecting one thing and tasting another. Our server was very kind though and even offered to bring us something else, which we declined of course because the dessert was totally sufficient. But a quick menu update could freshen that right up! The only other downside of Osteria is it gets incredibly loud inside! I was shouting at my friend to have discussions.Overall though, can't believe how delicious the food is and keep wondering why I waited so long to try this within-walking-distance Italian spot! Revisiting is tricky in Chicago, because with so many good restaurants there's always a chance that the experience won't live up to the first time. Osteria Langhe lived up to and beat my expectation from our first visit. We had a quiet meal on a Monday night to celebrate my birthday. Everything was perfect - from the apertifs with oysters, our pasta courses, and the panna cotta for dessert (complete with a candle). Osteria Langhe serves Italian cuisine that is more customary in the Piemonte region. One may say that there is a such thing as too many Italian restaurants. However, there is never a bad thing when it comes to discovering more to Italian dining than pasta and pizza. Polipo. Insalata. Seafood risotto. Soft shell crab. Panna cotta. The dish of grilled octopus, heirloom tomatoes, basil, capers, saffron oil, and grilled bread was a fantastic starter. The octopus did not have a rubbery texture to it. The tenderness of it made cutting into it feel almost like slicing through very tender chicken. Although the salad of tomatoes and mini greens came without much of a vinaigrette, there was enough to accompany the salad while letting the octopus have the stage as the star. The insalata was a salad of spicy mixed greens, kohlrabi, green peas, parmesan, and croutons of fried veal brains. The "sweetbread" croutons were like fried cotton candy -- if you can imagine that. The risotto comes as a different variety per day and I was fortunate that I got the seafood version that had plump scallop and shrimp. A very, very creamy base to it, the risotto is reminiscent of French cooking. This dish, however, was Italian cooking at its finest. The plate of soft shell crab and insalata russa is one that everyone should try, especially those who think that they know where the best Italian food is served. The soft shell crab had an egg batter that made it very light and there was so much meat in the crab that each bite was an explosion. The insalata russa, which is a combination of potato salad and tuna salad, an ideal choice for this dish and a great introduction to something authentically Italian that is not served in America-side Italian eateries. Nothing spectacular like a tiramisu, tartufo, biscotti, or cannoli, but creamy and outstanding for a wrap-up, the panna cotta served with mixed berries is an idyllic dessert finale.
