I am always craving a sandwich. Always. And everywhere I've tried is either way too expensive or just doesn't hit the spot. We were in North Austin and Yelp brought up this location and we checked it out. I got the Italian Sub and my husband got the Cheesesteak and a side of tater tots. We ordered for take out and my husband said as soon as he got in the car, "I think this place is going to be our new spot. It smells SO good in there." Haha. Sure enough, everything was delicious. Bread, serving size, tasted fresh! Only complaint was that the tater tots were overly seasoned with salt and pepper, but they came out piping hot so I was still happy. When you text a GF that's bringing you lunch you want a "baller sandwich," and Otherside shows up to the picnic, you immediately purchase a BFF necklace to celebrate the friendship. It's no surprise that they were out of pastrami, as it's plastered all over their website so when you go to order it's seeped deep into your psyche and even if you had a craving for Turkey, you end up clicking pastrami. So, in order to avoid the disappointment of not getting to have it, be sure to have a back up order ready to go, just in case. I ended up with a corned beef version of The Rueben and it was the definition of a "baller sandwich." Packed tightly with meat, lathered with sauce, sauerkraut for texture, and Swiss cheese to melt it all together. I'd suggest the toasted rye so the bread can keep the sandwich as compact as possible. If you like a kick, I also suggest getting their Deli XXX sauce, which is their signature mustard-based habanero. Sadly there's no way to keep it from getting soggy if it's being transported anywhere before it gets transported into your mouth, so if that irritates you, ask for the sauces on the side! read more

It turned out that a Sunday was the perfect day to stop by Otherside Deli! My husband is one of the biggest pastrami lovers I know, so naturally Otherside was on our list. He ordered The Otherside Pastrami and I ordered the Otherside Italian. And a seal salt chocolate chip cookie for good measure! Pastrami - hubs loved it. He said it was the best he'd ever had. The bread, the meat, the whole dang thing was so good. I snuck a bite and I really liked it! Italian - wowzas I love a good Italian sandwich and this was mindblowingly delish! They make their vinegar in house and that on the sandwich was a real winner! The cookie - I have no words. Perfectly soft inside and crispy on the outside. The salt was a nice touch and went well with the chocolate chips. We chatted with one of the owners for a while too. One of the best delis I've ever been to! I came here for lunch and knew I was in for a treat when I walked inside. Very basic decorations, only five or so tables, limited menu....all hallmarks of a good deli because they let the food do the talking. I ordered a Reuben half with chips and a drink. Let's start with the bread. Very good rye. Nice caraway taste, toasted to perfection. The Russian dressing was also tasty. Not too sweet, just right. The best part was of course the corned beef. Very juicy, just the right balance between fatty and lean, and a very generous helping. Honestly one of the best Reubens I've had! The Voodoo chips I got were also great. Never had these before, and they tasted like salt and vinegar with some BBQ notes. Highly recommend this deli! read more

Otherside Deli is in an old, very small strip mall on the corner of 34th and Medical Parkway. The sign on the building does not stand out so keep your eyes open. We drive by it twice before we found it. We arrived about 11:30 before the rush. I ordered The Otherside which is a choice of Pastrami, Corned Beef or Turkey with Russian Dressing and Coleslaw on Rye. It was delicious. The bread was fresh and is sourced daily from Sour Duck Market in East Austin. Next time I will ask it to be toasted. My companion had the Rueben which is choice of Pastrami, Corned Beef or Turkey with Russian Dressing, Swiss Cheese and Sauerkraut on Grilled Rye. I think it was toasted not grilled. The homemade pickles were a bit weird and definitely a work in progress. Caution: the tile floor was clean but very slippery so be careful. Hope they do well. read more

I was in Austin for a couple of appointments and i thought about a sandwich i got in California. Oh i wish that restaurant was here. So i found this place. I thought okay they have the best pastrami in town. I got to try it! I ordered a pastrami on rye with mustard and a corned beef on rye with mustard. Well, the corned beef wasn't ready. That was a huge disappointment. I usually split a sandwich with my sister so we both can try it. So i had to just get two pastrami. I was pumped i tell you to eat this sandwich. I took a bite and the bread was soft and the mustard was perfect. But it was a lot of thick pieces of fat all through the sandwich. That is a turn off. Now i know fat is suppose to be in there and it gives it flavor. But these were just to big in this sandwich. I told my sister while it's good i couldn't get past the big pieces of fat. Also i thought for the price for each sandwich it would be bigger. Honestly it felt like two pieces just folded over. I'm use to thinner cuts so the fat pieces are smaller and you can taste it better in my opinion. Otherside Deli and Sub has replaced Delaware Subs on Medical Parkway. They have absolutely first rate home made hot sandwiches. The cold stuff is Boar's Head. I loathe, execrate, despise and abhor Boar's Head. Fortunately, for them, a huge percentage of their sandwiches are of the Reuben-style sauerkraut and cheese variety. If you are serving meat and cheese, you ain't kosher anyway. But more so, the effect of the sauerkraut is going to wipe out any subtle differences between serving average, good or excellent meat. So if you are having a turkey, sauerkraut and cheese sandwich, the turkey could be Walmarts, let alone Boar's Head, and you are going to be okay. But when you get down to it, I wouldn't be ordering cold sandwiches here anyway. The hot sandwiches are just too good. Cheesesteaks are absolutely superior. If you can get their queso cheesesteak, call your mother to have her come down and join you. They also have Eggplant Parmigiana (sometimes) and Italian Meatball subs (always). I have never had a bad Italian meatball sandwich anywhere on the planet. Some things are just automatically good. If you insist on eating Boar's Head, be sure to get a sandwich that puts sauerkraut on it. This will prevent the Delicatessen Gods from striking you down and sending you to Mayonnaise, Lettuce and Tomato Hell. But why be avoiding Delicatessen hell, when Cheesesteak Heaven is right there on the same menu? read more

We were in Austin at a doctor's appt. We were all hungry and yelped places around to try we had three phenomenal sandwiches. My 5yr old is not very keen on sandwiches but ate the entire meatball sub. The flavor and the size for the money was great. I almost missed the entrance it is in the corner of a small building but if you are in the area I would definitely stop by and order something. There is free parking in front and the establishment is very clean. Another thing I judge a place on is customer service and they were extremely friendly. Made a stop here in Austin, and can I just say I ate some of the best pastrami I've had?! I tried both the corned beef and the pastrami, and both were so delicious! The corned beef was a bit fattier, but the pastrami packed more flavor. Both were very good though and somewhat similar. I wanted to try the Otherside sandwich (with cole slaw) but they were out of that, so both sandwiches were made Reuben style. They're on the greasier side, but soooo flavorful and tasty! It's a small mom and pop deli, but definitely worth making a stop for if you like pastrami! I'd advise you to go earlier if you can though, since it seems like they tend to run out of ingredients. Found this place today and decided to check it out... it was a little hard to find, as my GPS kept trying to take me to the hospital. I'm so glad I turned around a couple times and ended up finding it, because the food was incredible! The guys working were really friendly, the prices were reasonable, and patio area was nice to eat at. I got the Reuben, and my boyfriend got the Rowdy Roddy. We both really enjoyed it.
