Absolutely loved this breakfast spot! My friend and I came here around 9 and took 2 barstools. We looked at the menu and the man and women behind the counter were extremely attentive and kind. We ordered a breakfast sandwich, chocolate chip pancakes and a side of bacon. I LOVED the pancakes. Honestly, writing this I realize that although the food was awesome (and prices were more than reasonable!) I am really impressed with the service and that's the reason I plan on coming back. There is a parking lot, but the actual restaurant has limited space, so it may be a wait if you get there during prime brunch time. read more

Reminds me of a lot of breakfast restaurants in Grand Forks but just executed better. Use real eggs rather than liquid eggs. Bacon was thin cut but quite crispy. Highlight of the meal was probably the best American/home fries I have had in my life. Almost gets towards a hash browns consistency, with very moist potatoes and tasted very much homemade, which it is. Service is also quite friendly and seems a really nice place. Biking toward Harriet Lake around lunch time. Decided to have breakfast for lunch. I'd heard good things about Our Kitchen and frankly they were an understatement. No frills, no gimmicks, straight forward, classic breakfast food, but the service was perfect. The hashed browns which are not shredded and are not home fries are cooked to a beautiful golden crispness. The sunny side eggs were perfection, the sausage patties appeared to be ground pork shaped like a patty, so fresh and good. And yes the pancakes were as tender as a new born baby lamb, delightfully available plain or with blueberries or chocolate chips. So the moral of the story is if you hone in on what you do well, don't take short cuts or make substitutes to save time or money, and practice your art constantly, you will do it better than anyone else. I have not gone inside of this restaurant (just yet) but I ordered some food from here once last year and again today. I placed a to-go order this morning for three slices of cinnamon French toast, a piece of sausage, and scrambled eggs. The sausage is ON POINT! It seemed fresh, probably housed in a tube, and pattied out into a pretty nice size, not your average smallish-sized piece of sausage. Very flavorful and delicious. The eggs were OK. The French toast was good (not as good as Twisted Fork stuffed strawberry cream cheese French toast...OMG...OK, I digress), but it fit the bill. :) It's right across the street from Gigi's Cafe, which is another establishment I frequent, and only a few blocks from where I live. I will make it a point to have breakfast in-house at Our Kitchen one of these mornings to get a feel for the place, as I did enjoy my order, and I want to try out more items from their menu. read more

So my husband and I were in town for the weekend, we like trying different places to dine. I found this place on yelp and it was amazing. It's small but the food and the flavor was BIG. There was a wait for the food but it was worth every minute. The staff was super nice and the environment was very homey. The cook had it together. I sat at the counter and watched him make our food. The anticipation killed me I couldn't wait to taste the food lol. I had an omelet, hash browns, sausage, and pancakes. It was all sooooo good like sooooo good OMG. I cannot wait to bring my kids. The pancakes are from scratch and was so light and soft. My omelet was full of cheese onions peppers and ham. And the has browns gave me life. The portions are big. This place is the best kept secret in uptown! It's tiny, but family owned and operated. Everyone is so friendly and attentive. If you sit at the counter you can see your meal being made. I absolutely adore this place. It's a small but lovely diner with few seatings but it's always filled with customers. The server was so nice and I saw my breakfast being made right in front of me. The food came straight from the grill to my plate to me. It smelt delicious and decadent. I order a chocolate chip pancake (which was huge), hash-brown, steak, and two sunny side up eggs. The portion was extremely generous and it made me so happy. The chocolate pancake, the star of the meal, was heavenly good with the whipped butter. I literally finished the giant pancake in 5s. The steak was simply, flavorful, and juicy. The eggs were perfect and so was the hash-brown. You must try this breakfast place!!! You won't be disappointed! read more

First, me say that I try not to give out five stars too readily. But I also like to give full credit when I have an experience that went perfectly. Next, let me also say that I know that I am in a divey diner or "greasy spoon" as some previous reviewers have stated so my review won't be based on a scale that includes the likes of birchwood, the third bird, or other more organic and farm to table establishments. With that being said, my experience was perfect. My hash browns were full of flavor and crunch, my eggs were made fresh and fluffy, my toast was well made and delicious, and the SAUSAGE WAS MADE OF DREAMS! This was not frozen sausage. I saw him form it himself. Keep in mind I was expecting frozen sausage and I was going to be happy about it! So this was a pleasantly unexpected step above! Coffee was diner coffee but I was given cream in a silver pitcher and sugar to sweeten it up so I was content. The people behind the counter were really the best part. I believe the gal helping us was Sue, as she was called by someone else who casually mentioned her extensive tenure (at least 10 years), who was the shining light of this place and I could see it from the window before I even got in. She made me feel like I was home and I can't tell you how important that feeling is to me. I am a no frills breakfast type of girl - always ordered the all star at Waffle House, always want bacon / sausage, eggs, hash browns and toast, and an orange juice. I get the same thing at most brunch places I go to! Our kitchen is a small diner that understands the importance of doing the staple breakfast foods justice. Our kitchen is a small diner with a kitchen big enough for only two people and a few servers tops. Because of this, service can take a bit longer than other breakfast places, but they make up for the wait with food portions and a genuine and warm personality. I had the breakfast special and was STUFFED but thought everything was cooked very well. You have to add your own salt and pepper to taste but I loved the hash browns and sausage. One piece of advice, if you don't want to be sweating and smelling like food, don't sit at the bar by the grills! Didn't think about it and my boyfriend was sweating after ten minutes. If you want a good and hearty breakfast after a night out, this is the place to go! There's some outside seating but it wouldn't be great for big groups! read more

Every once in a while a place surprises you and this morning (unfortunately) we were surprised by the service at Our Kitchen. The main gripe was that we were significantly overcharged. I'll get to that... But first the positives. We were looking for diner food and this is exactly what we got. We arrived at 7:30am and the barstools were full as any good diner's should be at this time on a Saturday morning. We sat at a side table and a woman stopped by with coffee right away, as well as a welcoming smile. I even commented that she seemed like the nicest person in the world. We ordered - my girlfriend (we'll call her K) got the french toast, side of ham and cup of coffee. I saw what had to be 1/2 dozen ways to order pancakes and rather than point at a menu item - just said I want blueberry pancakes, eggs and sausage... Thinking they'd pick the best way for me there the waitress wrote something down and placed our order. 10-15 minutes later... The food arrived. It was okay - nothing special about it but also nothing bad. The sausage was a bit too greasy to eat but hey this is diner food - this is what you came here for right!? Then the bill arrived and things went side-ways... K and I were chatting about our day when something clicked... $27.35 seemed like too much for diner food - wasn't it? I knew K's breakfast was $6.95 plus $2 for the ham - $8.95. Then mine... I didn't select a menu item but the breakfast special was hashbrowns, eggs, pancake, toast and coffee for $10.95 - I figured that's what I'd ordered minus the hash browns - should be about $11. So we should've been around ~ $20... by my math... not $27.35... so we were overcharge something like $7. Wanting to understand what happened - I brought the bill over to smiling lady. We had a brief and unsatisfying conversation - she was no longer the nicest person in the world. I was told that I didn't order the breakfast special, I ordered the short-stack so that's why I was charged what I was. She insisted I paid for what I ordered and I repeated several times I did not actually order the short-stack. She was resolute - like she'd argued about this many times and I was yet another one of those annoying customers. She turned away in disgust calling the waitress over to deal with me. The waitress stopped by and explained why she selected the short-stack - because there was only one pancake in the breakfast special. Right... but if she'd written the breakfast special + 1 pancake would that have been +$7!? Even assuming you don't credit anything for toast and hash browns!? She said 2 pancakes was a short-stack + $.50 for blueberries on each cake and asked if we were okay now... No, we're not okay. Now, really this was my fault. I was lazy (pre-coffee) but I should've pointed out the menu item and asked about the pancake up-charge... taking the time to work through the best option for me with the waitress. Left to her own devices she made a valid choice - but one that cost 50% more than another choice to get me the same meal. Not a big deal for her - but a choice that left me feeling robbed. Then to be blamed and shamed for bringing it up!? That's really the kicker. You had your arguments ready for me - you expressed frustration and dismissal with me rather than shared confusion and understanding. SO this HAS happened before!? Nice. Our Diner this was YOUR fault too. I grew up in a restaurant business and know how frustrating it can be when issues come up with customers. I was not trying to get away with a free pancake here. I didn't wake up deciding that I'd like to argue over a $5 difference in the bill over my mediocre diner meal. BUT I have every right to call it out if there's more than 1 way to get there and you chose the most expensive way. Next time "see" through the customers eyes and make it right... this could've been reasonably and fairly handled. Instead you have at least 2 unhappy people today - and I sincerely hope that this review makes at least someone think twice about how to handle this kind of situation in the future. If you're not prepared to try to act in the best interest of the your customer then consider hanging it up... You don't need the headache over $5 do you? - We will never go back. There are so many great places to eat in town especially for $25-30+ dollars (after tip). My recommendation is to find another place. There is nothing special about this place and we won't miss it. If you do go - be sure you're clear on exactly what you want to avoid our experience! read more

It's everything a diner should be, portions are huge, never ending (tasty) coffee, burgers, french toast and fries are top notch, a very down to earth and homey vibe, so good we had to have it again before we went back home. 5 out of 5, 10 out of 10, we can't wait to go back!! It's a fairly small building with an equally compact parking lot. Parking: The aforementioned parking lot, or you can find street parking nearby. No one really takes more than an hour to order, eat and leave, so the turnaround is tolerable in terms of parking and waiting to be seated. Food: You get exactly what you order and lots of it! The portions are generous, the prices are super cheap and you'll never leave feeling hungry. My favorite meal of the day is breakfast, so I'm a huge fan of the classics: eggs, hash browns, bacon and either wheat toast or pancakes. The eggs are cooked perfectly, the hash browns have an amazing buttery crunch, the bacon is charred and crispy and the pancakes are fluffy, hot and huge. Ambiance: Imagine waking up on a lazy Sunday morning. You've allowed yourself to sleep in and your schedule is free for the day. You realize you're hungry, so you go to the friendly neighborhood diner for a hot breakfast. Our Kitchen epitomizes the greasy spoons of yester-year. Around since 1941, this little blue house is easily overlooked when driving through the 36th and Bryant hood. In fact, if it weren't for the neon OPEN sign, you might think this building derelict. The postage stamp eating area is counters only (on nice days, they throw a couple plastic tables outside), and it fits maybe 12-15 patrons cosily. It's a great place to mingle with your neighbors since you'll be bumping elbows anyhow. The food is exactly what a greasy spoon ought to be---everything's made on the same small grill with copious amounts of oil (or something like that) that give the hashbrowns a fab crunch griddle the toast perfectly. If afterward you still have room for a latte or pastry, you can join the strollers and yuppies across the street at Gigi's. read more

So for you jerks that leave a couple quarters on the table for a tip just because you can eat for $5? Get a clue. You never see the bottom of your coffee mug they fill it so fast. The best breakfast place anywhere! Danny, Sue and everyone that works there are just great people. The food is excellent. The best hash browns. The corned beef hash special on the weekend is amazing with nice big pieces of corned beef in it. also the Biscuits and gravy the gravy is perfect not too peppery the biscuits are the perfect consistency I don't know what it is about them but the texture taste as you're eating them just like heaven. The breakfast special is a great deal includes coffee you can substitute a pancake instead of toast and for about 50 cents add fresh blueberries in your pancake. You can also add onions and green peppers or even mushrooms to your hash browns or whatever you want. During the week a couple days have eggs benedict as a special. So I meant to go to Gigi's Cafe nearby but when I showed up, the line was ridiculous and my tummy was growling. I peered across the street and there, in all it's dilapidated glory, was Our Kitchen--the perfect little breakfast diner disguised as a house. Imagine a dining counter and a few tables crammed into your living room and you'll get the idea. As for food, they do their breakfast staples right. You cant go wrong with eggs how you like 'em, the perfect portion of crispy hashbrowns and toast. I haven't had regular old breakfast this good anywhere else in the Cities. Bonus: if you aren't crazy about toast, you can substitute a giant golden cloud-of-a-pancake drowning in butter for no cost at all--delicious! If you aren't a meat-eater, you will curse your dietary morals, because just watching the grill sizzle with homemade chunks of juicy sausage, thick slices of bacon, and huge cuts of fried ham was enough to make this vegetarian drool all over the formica countertop. I noticed a special 2 eggs that were perfectly over easy, a generous sized flat sausage patty, and the best hashbrowns. Perfectly golden and in spite of all the ketchup I put on, there was a crunch in every bite. Passed on the pancake or toast, good Lord. The AC is perfect, and I'm glad the staff benefit from this. I understand the appeal of this place - it's a great neighborhood diner, no frills, and they're churning out delicious eggs and pancakes. I just might be biased, because I couldn't help looking across the street and knowing that if I'd gone to Gigi's, I'd be fed and happy by the time my food was just started on Our Kitchen's flat-top. But I couldn't ignore the fact that many people were coming through the doors and were willing to wait for a bar stool to open. That's saying something!
