Immediately regretted the decision to dine at Outpost once I left. Came there hungry after a day in the park. The menu was pretty typical for the town, steaks, burgers, potatoes, etc. No alcohol options. But the food was AWFUL. No one that I dined with enjoyed their meals. Burgers were obviously frozen from a store, fries were soggy and cold, salad bar was lacking, the stew was cold and forgettable, and the fish and chips was store bought. The shining star of the meal was the waiter, who was friendly and attentive. Not to mention it was all overpriced. Skip this unless you have no other option. I cannot comment on the quality of the food. I cannot comment on the quality of the drinks. I cannot comment on the service. I can comment on being seated quickly. What? That is all I can comment on?? Yes, absolutely. We were seated. We waited, and waited, and waited for someone to come take our drink order. Nobody came. We waited some more. Nobody came. Not really sure how long we sat there, while servers, waiters, busboys wandered past us but did not stop to see if we needed anything,,,.. like maybe SERVICE!!!. Nope. We still waited, maybe 10 minutes. Funny thing was, there were only a few tables being used, It was not even 5:30PM, so we got there to beat the crowd(?). We got up and left. As we walked out, my wife commented to the person who seated us, that since no one wanted to wait on us we were leaving. His response was '...sorry...'. . Really? This place will only stay alive because it's reliant on the coming and going of tourists. HOWEVER THE SERVICE... The best parts of Outpost were the service and ambiance--but in such a woodsy, touristy place like West Yellowstone ambiance is similar and embedded into almost every business around. Arriving late into the town and hungry for anything, the BF and I stumbled into here 10 minutes to closing and praying they wouldn't get mad for our lateness. Not only did they accommodate us with smiling faces, but a few minutes after we were seated they also sat another family! The dining room was half-filled with travelers. BUT THE FOOD My Country Fried Steak arrived with steamed Carrots, Mashed Potatoes and a Roll. The Meat was very tough and chewy like it had been cooked once, left out, then refried again. The Carrots had most likely lived in a can until an hour ago. Both my dish and my BF's dish were swimming in gravy (very salty at first but somehow calmed down). My BF's Pork Special consisted of thinly, sliced Pork on an open-faced sandwich bread with Mashed Potatoes on the side. The Pork probably lived in a can as well--it looked like Deli Meat--and the Bread was unnecessary because after it was already mushy from all the Gravy. I don't know what all the complaints are all about but our experience was wonderful and our waitress was just a sweetheart. The place was spotless and my Buffalo Burger was amazingly delicious. It was actually better than most places during our travels from all the places we journeyed over 2 weeks. You're hungry, you're in the middle of no where, McDonald's is $9+ for all meals and you're grumpy. The remedy: steak. Pricey for the middle of no where but not too bad, around $25 per person. A lot of staring on the part of the patrons aren't too used to seeing yella faces but we got out alive! Whew... We all stuck with steak and potatoes, salad and soup. Super stuffed and a much better deal than expected. Service was nice, decor is very country western, lots of wooden decor and of course the staple bear decorations. Not much else to say about this place and since it's out in West Yellowsone, MT I highly doubt I'll ever go there again :P read more

I had two meals here, a late dinner and breakfast the following morning. The baked chicken for dinner was covered in some type of translucent gravy that had zero taste, the vegetables were under cooked and the baked chicken was dry and warmed in a microwave then covered with the non gravy, the dinner roll would break your teeth. The biscuits and gravy for breakfast had the same translucent gravy with chunks of sausage in it, tasteless. The biscuits were grainy and under baked, the hash browns were partially raw, the eggs were done well. I won't go here again. read more

This place is in the downtown area with a bunch of shops. There aren't many places with breakfast to choose from. I wouldn't compare it to a Denny's; basic diner. I had the french toast which wasn't very flavorful, tasted very eggie. When I got it, it was drowning in butter. I said yuck and had to scoop it with a spoon on a napkin. The waiter said, oh sorry. Best meal of our visit to Yellowstone. So good we went back for a second night. First visit I ordered the chicken fried steak and my wife ordered the hot beef plate. Our dinner arrived faster than expected and it tasted great. There was no shortage of gravy and the chicken fried steak was cooked perfectly. The second night we both ordered the hot beef plate. (Yes, my wife ordered the same dish a second night.) the hot beef plate was hot beef perfection! It was like going to the best greasy spoon diner 30 years ago. I would give zero stars if I could: Horrible food- tasted like they put it in the microwave and plopped it on a plate, "hot rolls" that were ice cold. It just shows the owners and line cooks have no passion for food and take advantage of a tourist town. Not the best breakfast in town. I ordered Biscuits & Sausage Gravy. I received one biscuit and a tasteless white cream gravy. I mentioned this to the server and she said the owners are aware of this grievance as they have had many complaints in the past. The only thing that was as advertised was the price and it's not cheap my son had a hamburger that said hand pressed patty it was frozen the french fries were advertised as hand cut they were frozen out of a bag. My wife ordered an open face hot beef plate that you could tell was pulled out of the freezer and put in a crockpot her mashed potatoes tasted like instant potatoes. Everything was advertised as fresh homemade I had a fresh hand breaded chicken fried steak that I could tail had come from the freezer to the fryer again the french fries were frozen fries and carrots were the vegetable that I really think were cooked in a microwave. This was our first dinner in town and I truly hope their advertisement of being the best place in town is not correct we could lose some weight on this trip. read more

A French Bistro in disguise! I would like to start this review by shaming any of the Philistines who left one star because their server didn't introduce themselves. They have clearly never had European style service. We went to this place on the way out of Yellowstone thinking it would be some family style hog-trough. Once I noticed the whole wait staff was French, I knew this place was more than met the eye. The food was fantastic and cooked from scratch. The chef was clearly French as well. French cooks are very sparing with salt. This allows you to season your food to taste. My Chicken Parm was not a heavily breaded cutlet deep-fried in 2 feet of oil. It was lightly floured and pan fried in butter and lemon. The red sauce had diced Carrot, Celery and Chervil. Very French! The salad bar even had Arugula! My family were equally impressed with their entrees. Everything was clearly made from scratch, including the robust and thick tomato soup from the salad bar. Lets talk about the service. Our waiter was very polite and worked hard. It was Continental style table service. A European waiter will never tell you their name without being asked. They wont pester you about how you like your food. You will find your glass being quietly topped-off before you even noticed it was low. Your plates will be whisked away as soon as you finish a dish. There is a much greater emphasis on wait staff being in the background, interrupting your meal as little as possible. How this could be interpreted as rude by some people boggles my mind. If you have a discerning palate and enjoy Continental cuisine, this is the best restaurant in West Yellowstone. read more

Eclectic restaurant in the Yellowstone area, excellent customer service and plenty of charm! The meals were tasty. We had the bison burger, which was juicy and flavorful. A steak sandwich which was made exactly as ordered. The son of gun stew which is a homemade vegetable beef stew, very filling and delicious. We also had open faced beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. For dessert we had rhubarb and strawberry pie ala mode and moose tracks ice cream. Very good!! First time in town. Outpost Restaurant is very well presented and has an awesome interior/decoration/location. I gave it two stars because of the food. My wife and I had the chili and it was very unimpressive. A ton of beans, little meat, barely warm enough to melt the cheese and very bland. One kid had the grilled cheese with fries and the cheese wasn't even melted. The other had a cheese burger and it was really dry. They each got a handful of fries to go with it. I know that this is a tourist town, but prices here border on usary and that's just not ok. $24.00 for a crappy 6 oz. sirloin and 3 butterflied shrimp? Get real. The menu was straightforward: pick your food and nearly everything comes with one trip to the soup and salad bar. If you order a dish that doesn't include it, you can add it on for about $5. We ordered: Pulled BBQ pork sandwich, sirloin steak and shrimp x2, and a kids spaggetti with a cup of soup. We headed over to the salad bar only to find the most pathetic options. Lettuce; carrot and celery sticks; croutons; dressing. Wow--what choices. The food arrived in a fairly decent amount of time. The steaks were dry, tough, and thin. The shrimp were obviously frozen so they couldn't mess that up. The BBQ sandwich was drenched in so much BBQ sauce that it was inedible. And worst of all--the kids spaggetti tasted as if the cook just dumped handfulls of Italian seasoning into the sauce. My poor kid had to eat this?? Total bill: $80. Total money wasted on crappy food: $80 I hate you Outpost. And for the record: money isn't an issue for me if the food is good. But this wasn't $80 quality! read more

We stayed in West Yellowstone while visiting the park and stumbled upon this place one evening. It was after 10PM so our options were limited. Outpost wsa open and the menu looked decent. We had baked chicken, mashed potatoes, veggies, soup and salad. The food was just ok. Mediocre at best. I wasn't expecting much though. After all, we were in an awfully tiny town. The reason I'm giving this place one star was because of the service. The lady serving us (Teri) was extremely rude. I've never come across someone so unfriendly at a restaurant and felt so unwelcome. I asked another younger lady at the counter what the deal is with Teri. She just apologized, said she's the owner's sister, and "is just like that". For those looking for a nice meal after checking out the park, stay clear of Outpost. Food: Salad bar had wilted lettuce, beets, broccoli, days old carrot & celery sticks & about 6 funky salads like Gramma used to make. Soup was split pea & vegetable barley - the cook (not a chef by any means) LOVES salt because that's all you taste! No fruit of any kind on salad bar. Service: Hostess almost attacks you at the door with a friendly "HI - how many????" as she rings her hands hoping you'll stay (clue...) Waitress had thick Slavic accent & was downright scary! Once she hear we opted for the salad bar, we hardly saw her. Odd features: If you ask for LEMON for your water be prepared to PAY FOR IT!!!! 50 cents for 4 slices of lemon. When we inquired about the 50 cent charge, the hostess snapped "Oh, that's for the lemon, its listed on the menu". Wanna order a soda? Be prepared to pay for refills - 50 cents a refill. This place is not as bad as others are making it out to be. It's not spectacular, but it's decent enough for a quick stop before Yellowstone. I had the unlimited soup and salad bar for $9.99. They had two soups, vegetable medley and beef barley. Both were good but way too salty. The salad bar had plenty of options, including pickled vegetables, beets, tuna, variety of beans, cottage cheese, potato salad, pasta salad, and pretty much everything else that's standard. My co-worker got a cheese omelette with crispy hash browns and toast. He said it was pretty good, but hard to mess up a cheese omelette. The service was friendly, food came out quickly, and prices were standard for what you'll be finding throughout Yellowstone. I come to West every year at least a few times, the hubby and I decided to finally try this place. Waited an awkward minute or two for someone to notice us and seat us. No biggie, right? That can totally happen. Sit down, drank some water, took a look at the menu. A bit overpriced, but hey, it's a tourist town so I don't mind. Notice that lemon is $.50 extra. And that refills are $.50 extra. And if you want something "to go", well hey that's $1 extra. And if they see you sharing a plate, that's a $3 charge. Not the most courteous place, but we're hungry and don't plan on sharing food. And definitely not planning on drinking a soda now. Normally I'm very indecisive. So after 5 minutes of menu gazing I knew what I wanted. Usually by this time the waiter/waitress has come by, but not this time. She was nowhere to be seen. Then we see the table next to us was talked into pie for dessert. The table next to them was checked on, then we were ignored. Then a couple minutes later the waitress came around again, only to ignore us again. After 10+ minutes of waiting we left.
