We've been coming to Owen O'Leary's for years - both in Westborough and Southborough - and I think it's easy to take them for granted. This is such a great, local, no frills place to have in the neighborhood for a reasonably priced meal when you don't feel like cooking, or a place to convene with friends to share a beer. During our most recent visit, we enjoyed the Irish fish & chips, which is always a good sized piece of fish with a crispy batter and hot, crispy chips. We were in Westborough for a night on business, and after we arrived we decided to go to Owen O' Leary's for lunch based on Yelp reviews. They were a bit mixed but the menu had so many options we wanted to go. One of the specials of the day was Ribeye Steak Caesar Salad $14.95. I ordered that and OMG - the steak was HUGE. It was cooked to a perfect medium rare and covered the entire salad. By the time I finished most of the steak, I couldn't even eat the salad, lol. It was delicious, you could taste the grill and I really enjoyed the flavor. My BF got the Loaded Nachos: Tortilla chips piled high with chili, lettuce, tomato, black olives, jalapenos, cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese. Served with salsa and sour cream. $15.99. They were delicious - lots of chili, lots of cheese almost every tortilla chip had cheese and the other ingredients. These were some of the best Nachos we have had in quite a while! Usually there are lots of chips that are dry and not enough cheese or chili. Everything was very fresh - crunchy lettuce, fresh tomatoes and a very tasty chili. I wish we lived close to here, but we are moving to Florida so that won't happen again. But I definitely recommend the 2 dishes we had. Server was quick and pleasant. read more

The food was fine. About what you would expect for bar type food. We went on a Tuesday and it turns out kids eat free on Tuesdays so that made the dinner extreamly cheap. I would have given a higher rating except for some strange issues. Maybe it was just our server being difficult or maybe it is the restaurant policy but usually you can turn a cheese pizza into a pepperoni pizza for an up charge. Not here (at least not if it is on the kids' menu). They wanted to charge for a whole new pizza just to add pepperoni instead for a couple of bucks for an up charge. Even stranger was that the menu showed root beer floats. People in our party ordered them and were told "we haven't had those since Covid". That was 4+ years ago! So the menu hasn't been updated since then? And even if they really were working through the 5 years worth of menus they printed before Covid you would think they could update their website which also shows a root beer float. And to top it off they sell root beer and vanilla ice cream so why is a root beer float unavailable? What exactly happened during Covid (and is still occurring) to make them unable to scoop the vanilla ice cream into the root beer? Very strange. read more

Awesome atmosphere.....always sit at bar when eating at an Irish restaurant to get the full ambiance, authentic fare ! Bartender was great and all over us for whatever we needed! We were there on a Tuesday afternoon after spending 30 k on a new Jeep from a dealer down the street. This place is across the parking lot from the local Hampton Inn, and it's really your only option with walking distance if you're staying at the inn. Maybe that's by design. While I was in the lobby area reading the menu, on a quiet evening, several other parties came in and wound up standing in line for a few minutes before getting any attention at the hostess desk. They were then told it would be a few minutes wait until something could be ready, which implies to me that they were not staffed adequately for a small surge. I live about 5 minutes walk away and visited for the first time on a Friday around 6.30pm (was busier when leaving around 9.30). Initially very quiet when arriving but the middle-aged male bartender left it a few minutes before acknowledging us stood at the bar. Ordered two Guinness- which were poured from cans.... in an Irish pub! Eventually seated and a waitress looked after us and was nice. Ordered two burgers which were just fine. Then only after asking for the check at the end of the night were told card machines are down - and directed to use the in-house cash machine complete with withdrawal fee. My favorite bar/restaurant in Westborough, I've made shelter at their second location while I've been on the road. I live across the country but the entire staff at this establishment were great, some of the nicest working people that I've experienced and they were quite welcoming. I became a temporary regular and have consumed a fair amount of their pub fare, not even 50 percent, but a good variety. I think my favorites included their stuffed quahogs, ribs (when available), and their fried caramel banana cheesecake. The food comes out at a decent time especially during their busy hours, there's a good amount of parking here, but yes beware of their peak times, The atmosphere is very laid back, a bunch of TVs which are great for sports, even the locals that come here or those who aren't locals are kind as well. This weekend, our robotics team traveled from California to compete in a robot competition in Worcester, Massachusetts. On the evening before flying out, we decided to take the students to Owen O'Leary's in Westborough, MA, as it was conveniently located next to our hotel, and we wanted to celebrate a successful trip. Upon entering, I requested a table for the students and parents. To my shock, a worker at the establishment yelled at me, stating, "We will not serve you or your kids." Initially, I thought perhaps children weren't allowed, but upon looking around, I saw plenty of kids. It became clear that my treatment was based on the color of my skin. The most disheartening part was that this incident occurred in front of the students and families. My 9-year-old son was present, and I had to explain the reality of racism to him. I hope no one else has to endure the treatment I received at Owen O'Leary's. A beautiful trip was ruined by such an ugly incident. read more

A moment later we were offered the mixer version which we didn't want, but they couldn't make the real drink they said. We were also told there are some weird laws in MA about this drink and serving shots. We looked this up and couldn't find anything about that. So it was 11pm and I was absolutely starving after a few hours of excellent badminton at Boston Badminton Club just down the street.. I pulled over into the shoulder to search for a good place for a quick meal. I searched for chicken, burgers, fish sandwiches.. and realized that all of them were available WITHIN SIGHT across the road at O'Leary's! I've been there many times with bigger groups and always enjoyed it. They're welcoming, they have a big menu (smaller but substantial late night), lots of space, and they are almost always open! That last one is particularly notable in an area where it seems everything closes at 9. Anyway.. I ended up getting fish & chips and they were excellent! Good light breaded fish, not oily, perfectly seasoned fries/chips, and an unexpected but much appreciated/enjoyed container of cole slaw. YUM! Next time I'm just heading right in. read more

If you are not from Mass do not be offended by the tone. That is just how we talk. Near the hotel I was staying at there are like two restaurant options within a 2 minute drive. I selected this one. The appetizer menu! There were so many options I was just fine with ordering two of those to take with me. I decided to go with the Buffalo Chicken Egg Rolls & Thai Chicken Lettuce Wraps. There were about 3 more things I wanted to try but I'll save that for the next trip perhaps. Buffalo Chicken Egg Rolls These rolls were fantastic. They had the right amount of buffalo sauce & not too much cheese & just the right amount of egg roll :). It paired very well with blu cheese. Thai Chucken Lettuce Wraps These were ok. I do appreciate the size of the chicken but the big pieces of lettuce were a bit much. I ate the chicken with just the included sauce. The sauce was very good. The chicken was decent. Perhaps I've had too many trips to PF Chang's & what I have in my mind about lettuce wraps are slightly skewed. Since there are other options I want to try I'll pop back in to see if those are as good as they are described. read more

The service here is just perpetually bad. This was the 5th time we've reluctantly chosen to eat here as it's one of the few later-opened restaurants in westboro. The server was very green, with a "I don't want to be here" attitude. She scoffed when we asked for bread. The other bartender came over to tell us she's new, and that's fine I understand that. Everyone learns. The food came out, and it was a really good Buffalo chicken salad however there was a large piece of plastic mixed in, as you can see in the photo below. I told the server, whose mouth dropped like "OMG I've never seen that" yet she didn't do anything to discount/take care of the meal. Look, it's a divey, faux-Irish pub in the parking lot of a dumpy hotel. I suppose it's what you expect, sans plastic in your food and no apology for it. If you're hungry in Westborough, keep driving. The food is good. But one time I ordered takeout online didn't go as I expected. After making my order online, the app said it will take 45 minutes. I show up 45 minutes later at the restaurant to pickup my food only to be told to please wait. I told the guy what I ordered, but he never check it for me, just left me waiting for another 40 minutes. I come to find out my order was ready the entire time I was waiting. It was just sitting on a table nearby with my name on it. How can you let a customer wait for that long without questioning it? Great Guinness - and that's coming from an Irish girl. There is also a great selection of foods; everything from steak tips to salads to wings and pizza. The service was a little lacking though, on a Thursday night when the Bruins were playing in the play offs I would have thought they would have had an extra staff member or two.
