I get it, a restaurant on location at a nice resort hotel (especially one as high rated as Zachari Dunes) is supposed to be high end. Six of us went for dinner at 7:30. Our server was a hot mess. It took 15 minutes before she took our drink order. The drinks took 20 minutes to get and she informed us that they were out of beet juice for the one signature cocktail that was ordered, so a draft beer was ordered instead. That took another 15 minutes to get. Mind you, the restaurant wasn't full, maybe half full at best. After the replacement beer was served, she disappeared for another 15-20 minutes before she finally took our order. The couple sitting at the next table over arrived after we did, ordered, ate, paid and left before we got our food. Their server was extremely attentive to them. About 5 minutes after taking our order, she came back and that they only had one serving of prime rib left (we ordered 2). Had she taken our order in a timely manner, that wouldn't have happened. I was furious. We were staying at the resort for our son's wedding at the resort the next day. The food was good but not the best we had in the area. Because we had 6 in our party, an automatic 20% gratuity was applied to the total. The service we received wasn't worth a 2% gratuity. One star was added back to the rating because the wait staff and food served from the same kitchen at the reception dinner the next evening was exceptional. Wanting our son's wedding to be perfect, we were concerned based on how unacceptable the previous dinner was, especially for the price per person. Kudos to the kitchen staff and servers for our event. Management needs to do a better job monitoring service! read more

The location is great, close to beach. Some seats outside you can even see the ocean. The restaurant itself is also pretty. We only had drinks and an app. Just needed to share that the cocktails are 17-18$. I think that's very expensive. The guac and chips were just ok. The chips were greasy. The biggest reason we wouldn't try again was the service. Hostess nice, waitress nice but it took forever to get a second drink. After 15 minutes after ordering it, when she returned (without our second drink) we said we were ready to go. She said oh but your drink didn't come, and ran off to get it before we could even say never mind. But... still took another 5-7 minutes to bring a margarita with no lime or garnish. Mind you, we had already said we were ready to go.... 10 minutes later, still no check. I'm giving this restaurant only two stars because I did not enjoy the food. Probably partially because I do not like fish and there are not a lot of options. for someone who can't eat fish. I had the vegetarian pasta and it was just so bland. Said it had tomatoes in it, but I couldn't find any that weren't completely shrivel down. The crunchy potato dish was interesting but really nothing to write home about. The drinks are super expensive and my husband had a $30 hamburger that was not nearly as good as an In-N-Out Burger. 4 of us had brunch at 10am on a Sat. We had reso and manager found us an outside table-too warm inside. Setting was beautiful, service excellent except the busboy wanted to take my plate when it was obvious that I was still eating (bk burrito in my hand!). cocktail (vodka/grapejuice+++) very good, bk burrito delicious. Wife had a garden omelet- very good and she liked the smashed potatoes (a flavorful spice on the outside and cooked to crispy). Friends scrambled eggs were cold. Bacon was above average. The star and disappointment of the show were the lemon pancakes. Huge, covered with and impressive amount of fresh fruit. The first few bites were "magnificent" according to my friend but then she was digging into the cake as she thought the soft stuff was stuffing and wanted to further explore---actually one pancake was seriously undercooked. Ox & Ocean started as "that restaurant in the hotel we stayed in" but has come to be known as one of our favorite places to eat. It should be a locals destination for dining...the options, the service and the ambiance is that good. The menu is full of options. We've been with a couple different groups of friends and every time, everyone has found something to suit their diets and their tastes. I have fixated on the pork chop. It is just that memorable....three years we've made Zachari Dunes our vacation getaway and three years I've ordered the chop! Perfectly cooked and the puree feels more like a luxurious sauce. Don't skip on the brussels. Delicious. This last visit we were served by Aga. She's a delight. She ran us through highlights on the menu and had great drink recommendations. Funny kind and charming made the best combination! They have lots of local's events and special experiences. The outdoor seating gets a bit breezy and cold rather quickly, even in the summer. Also the open space that is clearly event space that they convert into spillover seating for larger groups can get LOUD and is a bit hard to converse with your table if you are in there. Got my ticket validated at the restaurant, went to exit it out and the machine stated the scan code had been used on 8/2/25. ‍. Very upset about it. Push the call button, did not get an answer. I became frustrated as a car line to exit was building behind me. Ended up paying the 5 dollars. Not a bid deal but did take away the experience from a local supporting local businesses. I loved both of my meal experiences at Ox and Ocean. We enjoyed dinner and brunch during our stay at the Zachari Dunes Resort. Reservations are definitely helpful. I had reserved our New Year's Day brunch, however we neglected to reserve New Year's Eve dinner. Luckily we were able to get a table. The restaurant is very nice, all of the staff we encountered were friendly and accommodating, and I was able to enjoy both the indoor seating at dinner, and the outdoor seating for brunch. For dinner we enjoyed the Brussels sprouts appetizer which was delicious! I ordered the O&O Burger with fries, which was fine, just a standard burger. Dessert was a Fire Roasted Milkshake. I was excited to try it, and it did not disappoint! The next day at brunch I ordered the Cranberry mimosa, which was one of the best mimosas I've had. We dined at Ox & Ocean to celebrate my daughter's birthday. When making the reservation, the system asked if we were celebrating anything special, and I noted the occasion. Unfortunately, the restaurant didn't acknowledge it at all. It wasn't a deal-breaker, but it was definitely disappointing. The menu is centered around shared plates, so we each ordered an entrée and a couple of sides. The sides came out about 10 minutes before the entrées, which made for a strange pacing; either eat them right away (without the main course) or let them sit and cool off. For a restaurant promoting shared dishes, better coordination here would go a long way. That said, when the entrées arrived, everything was beautifully cooked and well-seasoned. The portions were on the smaller side, but the flavors and presentation were on point. Overall, Ox & Ocean has a lot of potential. With a little more attention to the details like honoring special occasions and improving the timing of food it could easily earn another star from me. read more

Met family here as they were on the way to a Santa Barbara flight, and I wanted to host them in my home town. I was not impressed again with the restaurant. It was just OK. I have now hosted 3 times friends coming out of town. I want this place to work! The decor and grounds are perfect! First they sat our group at a table that literally was over the sewer lid. Smelled so bad, we tried to stay, but eventually asked to move. Not sure why they would put a table directly over the sewer lid. Smelled like rotten eggs. Took so long to get the food that we asked for bread for our table of 6. They brought out 4 pieces of bread and a sliver of butter. Very odd. Food: Ordered the crabcake and it's small, $22. Not worth it. We ordered a 2nd because that was my neice's meal, and she was still hungry. She's 12. So 2 crab cakes for $44. Yikes. Pork Chop meal, 2 ordered. Was very good. High price though. Mussels very good. Short Rib Bao Buns also very good. Took like 20 min. to get the outdoor heater to work. Changed propane and still had problems. Mixed Drinks VERY watered down. Very expensive. Wouldn't mind the price if the quality of Ox & Ocean matched the grounds. Seems still like the Mandalay Beach Resort quality. Not upscale resort which they are attempting to be. What could make this place better? 1. have a designated person to be in charge of checking all the heaters before each shift. They must be ready and working before dusk or at all times due to the proximity of the water and the coolness. 2. The outdoor fireplace and sconces were never lit. I saw people sitting in the sofas freezing and no fire. That should also automatically come on at dusk. 3. Don't water down drinks. 4. Have some sort of music for ambiance 5. Make sure when you first are seated your server comes in a timely manner. 6. Offer something for the table when you are first seated. Chips? Bread? Too expensive of a menu to not offer something. 7. Get rid of that table over the sewer cover or put down some sort of outdoor rug to damper the smell. Test it, sit there and have a meal. If it still stinks, get rid of sitting people there. 8. Offer a kids menu and more appetizer options that reflect the price. $22 for 1 crab cake is insane. 9.. Maybe offer a locals deal night or menu. Show your id as a local and have some great menu for us so we come back over and over. 10. You need more people on that patio year round. I'm fine with the pricing if the quality and service reflect that level of price structure, but it's not. Train your employees better. If you want Mastro level pricing, you better deliver. Or this place is gonna get turned over AGAIN. Summary: Not up to par with the level they are trying to achieve. Hopefully things will change. Such a beautiful property! Looking at the responses of earlier reviews from the business manager seems like nothing has changed. So her canned responses are unfortunate. Looks like the manager might need replacing. Stayed at the attached Hilton over the weekend. Ate at the restaurant several times. Staff here was friendly and seemed to work really hard. Food was sometimes very good. That said - the slowness of the service and kitchen was pretty bad. The consistency of the food quality/presentation was disappointing: some plates were well thought out and truly very tasty. Others felt like they slopped some food on a plate and rushed it out because they were behind. We had to chase down servers frequently who were MIA. We were also told hour+ waits, eventually just grabbed a seat at the bar, but watched ~30% of the tables in the restaurant sit empty the entire evening. Truly feels like a management and understaffing issue that I hope they can fix. read more

Unfortunately the outdoor seats were busy so we tried to grab one of the numerous outdoor tables that were empty before 5pm! After an extensive walk to the other end of the restaurant, I found the hostess, to only be informed that the tables are reserved for only food and drinks, not cocktails! Meanwhile at least 8 tables remain open due to only dining before 5pm. People who wanted only drinks are leaving as space not available at bar. When there is open tables and before 5pm, they should open them up. We did finally have a couple of drinks at the bar. Cocktails are 19 dollars and up. Not big but good. We dined at this restaurant to celebrate 2 very special occasions, a 'milestone' birthday and a wedding anniversary. Our first observation, was the restaurant was lovely and stylish. The hostess was efficient, but not necessarily welcoming or friendly. Our server was attentive and seemed knowledgable about the menu. The restaurant did not have many patrons while we were there as it was mid-week. I do wish there were more options for those who wish to eat vegetarian, as I did that evening. With limited vegetarian options, I ordered the crispy potatoes as an appetizer. I wish I was advised that that plate is more for sharing than for a single person. What was served was a fairly large dish full of crispy potatoes, (fried in butter? and covered in a tasty, tangy sauce), however it was definitely more of a sharing plate. Although very tasty, it was one of those foods, where less is more and sharing the dish would be more advisable. I did try to eat as many as possible, but there came a point, where it was too much of the same thing. I also ordered the organic green salad which the best description I can think of is dull and underwhelming, The vinaigrette was barely detectable and did not add anything to the dullness of the salad. I wish I was warned by the server that that salad was basically a mix of shredded lettuces and pretty underwhelming unless accompanied by a protein. All in all, I feel the property should have at least one more restaurant option to fill the gap, between a casual and a somewhat pricey option. read more

We absolutely love Ox & Ocean. We live locally & highly recommend this restaurant. All of their menus are excellent, small but delicious. My personal favorites are the eggs Benedict w/ jalapeno-corn fritter, avocado toast, chilaquiles, flat iron steak w/ chimichurri, halibut, crispy potatoes, bao buns & beet salad. The laid back atmosphere, proximity to the ocean & being dog friendly are added bonuses. Their cocktails are delicious & thoughtful too. The only reason why I didn't give them 5 stars is because of the Thursday dinner special of seafood Paella. Although the food was really good, the paella had absolutely not one spec of socarrat. This is the main reason we were willing to pay for this delicacy. My husband travels often to Spain. So we had high expectations for that distinctive crispy, golden soccarat. What a pleasant experience to have dinner here. We had Katlynn as our server and she definitely made us feel welcomed and taken care of. I am allergic to gluten and dairy and there are some options on the menu for us. Both of us ended up going with the burger and I regret not photographing it because it was a beauty. I ordered mine lettuce wrapped and without cheese. They used butter lettuce! I was impressed. The trimmings were delicious as well. We also went with the beet salad which we didn't need but was nice to try. We were stuffed. There's a fireplace in the bar area. We didn't get to enjoy it but it's a treat for those sitting in front of it. I wish they had a hard booch or another gluten free fizzy option on their beverage menu. That would've been better with my burger than wine. I wanted something fizzy but they only had Prosecco and rosé on offer by the glass which are both quite sweet. A hidden gem located steps from the sand. I recently enjoyed a delicious brunch on the patio at Ox & Ocean. I started with a unique Sunrise Latte made with turmeric, ginger and lavender syrup. Unique & healthy! I shared a generous size Caesar salad with my party along with the fish tacos. (There were 3 on the plate). All dishes are definitely shareable & the quality is as stellar as the portion sizes. If you are feeling breakfast, I would recommend the Chilaquiles with Chorizo. Yummy salsa! And, by far the ultimate favorite of our group was the Ox & Ocean burger with house made bacon & pickles. We ordered a couple bottles of champagne and mixers to get us started. The waitress was knowledgeable on the different types of champagne ranging from dry to sweet. As far as the food...I don't typicallly like restaurant eggs. But I ate them all this day haha! They were cooked perfectly. The crispy potatoes were my favorite. Crisped to perfection and seasoned well. The chicken sausage was a bonus as well. We had the Short Rib BAO Buns for our starter, I had the Vegetarian Pappadelle (added Salmon) and my husband had the Pan Seared USDA NY steak. The meal hit all 3 "T's" (Timely, Temperature ,Taste). The restaurant had indoor and outdoor seating, and there was an elevated vibe without the snobbiness. We ordered the maple bourbon Brussels sprouts and crispy potatoes as appetizers. Both were delicious! My partner ordered the half jidori chicken, and that was one of the best chicken dishes we've ever had. It was super moist and flavorful. I ordered the grilled swordfish, and I was impressed with its smoky profiles. We ordered the strawberry hand pie for dessert and it was the perfect way to end our dinner. All of the food we ordered were solid portions and we walked out stuffed. I'm really glad my partner and I decided to try this restaurant as a last-minute decision. Ox and Ocean is such a beautiful restaurant in a beautiful location. They are located in Zachari Dunes which is right next to Oxnard Park. In certain seating areas, you have the nice view of the ocean. If you close to sunset, it's just a breathtaking view. Zachari dunes does have a parking structure. It is paid parking but you can get your pass validated at the restaurant to cover all or some of the cost. Up to 2 hours is covered, if I remember correctly. They have a simple menu which I like most of the time and this one I liked. They have a good mix of different items which I enjoy in a restaurant. Their drink menu is simple as well. A few selections of wine and beer and they do make their own cocktails. I ended up getting their oxtail buns since I had gotten them at an event and they were just as delicious as I had remembered. I was pleasantly surprised how nice this place was when we pulled up. The restaurant and hotel is beautiful. As we entered the restaurant, I went to the hostess stand and let the young, blonde hostess know I had a reservation. Without any kindness or smile, she told me that because of others waiting, we would need to wait to our actual reservation time (we had arrived about 15 mins early). I looked around, and oddly noticed that the restaurant was probably 1/3 full, and said we would be waiting at the bar. When the time of our exact reservation rolled around, I went back to the hostess stand. where the same hostess was just returning from seating another party of three. I also noticed that the hostess brought over place settings for the seated party. Nothing for us.. Inspite of this distasteful start, the food itself was quite good. Me and my boyfriend just went there for Valentine's Day dinner and we were hoping to have a great experience but this dinner ended up ruining our whole weekend. My boyfriend's first course was the hamachi. Then we ended up waiting for so long for our second course after 30 mins of waiting he started to not feel good. We asked the waitress to ask the chef to just bring out all the dishes so we could leave. After two hours we were done. And then he spent the whole night sick. He ended up with food poisoning from the fish. He started throwing up around 10 pm and it's now the next day and he was still throwing up. He wasnt able to get any rest.
